Is Verizon trying to play me???!!! - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I got the maxx on release date, I wanted to use my grandparents upgrade and not mines because I wanted to keep my unlimited data. So the workers at the Verizon store tell me that "yes" I can transfer an upgrade but as soon as I put the maxx under my account it will change my unlimited data to a new upgraded device and I would loose my unlimited data. I said "get the @#%$ outta here, I've been using other peoples upgrades for years". Then I said give me one second and called Verizon and they told me me that it might work and might not work. So back into the store I went. The employees inside said that I could try transferring an upgrade but if it doesn't work that I would have to pay a $35 restocking fee. Smh!!! But I had one small window of an opportunity to still get the maxx and keep my unlimited data. Before the edge program started on Monday, I was able to put a down payment on the maxx and the rest of the balance is spread out on my monthly bills. I still have a week left to return this phone and use my grandparents upgrade to save some money but don't know if it will work. So did they play me, or can I use the transfer of someone else upgrade.

I don't think they will let you Abby more. They have been trying everything they can to get ppl off unlimited.

I did it. My mom had an upgrade that I used. I went to the store and they called my mom to OK it. Then I bought the maxx on her account for 300 and they activated it to her. Then they transferred it to me. Then they transferred her back to her phone. They were cool about it.

I called Verizon again today and they told me it was ok. I think they were trying to swindle me out of my unlimited contract. So im going to take this phone back this weekend right before my 2weeks are up. I hear they have a developers edition of the moto x coming out soon, i wonder will the maxx be coming out soon too.

Do you have a link to that? If that's the case I will turn my phone back in now and wait for that one. That's if I don't have to wait too long.

I went to the Verizon store to switch my wife's unlimited line using the new edge plan. Verizon is offering 6gb for $30 if you switch from an unlimited plan and you have an upgrade available on that line. My wife only uses an average of 1gb putter month so she wouldn't miss her unlimited data. I was going to alias out the payments over 2 years and if I looked the Maxx sell my note2.
However I found out today that I can use the upgrade on my wife's line but that the phone couldn't be transferred to another line. It would only be able to be used on the same line until the phone was paid off. I have another line available for an upgrade but I figured with this plan I can upgrade every year. Now I think I want to wait to see what is in store for the rest of the year. However I really want the Maxx I want to get back to a stock android experience.

A Verizon rep told me today that you can use someone elses upgrade, edge or not. They are just trying to get us off our unlimited plan. I use it over 100gb per month. I need my unlimited!!!

I'll clear some stuff up for you guys.
When using upgrades in the store, wherever the upgrade goes automatically removes unlimited data. If you have unlimited and use your upgrade, it's gone. If you use grandma's upgrade and have them point it to your number, it's gone. The only way to keep unlimited data was as described above. Upgrade the phone on grandma's line, activate it, reactivate grandma's old phone, and then swap the new phone onto your line. Some reps know about this and some don't, but they're not out to get you. This is just the way the system works.

Remember to tip your rep if he deserves it! Not with cash, but Verizon reps are always under pressure from management to sell you accessories, so if you were looking to pick stuff up for your phone or anything else they also stock, get it there and ask for a discount! They will absolutely hook you up if you're spending money with them.

I did this the other day managee said I can't give you the new Sim card to switch off your mothers line but I can't stop you from going to another store. So I used her upgrade drove home reactivated her iPhone online on Verizon then drove to another store said I bought this from a friend I need a Sim card. No other Verizon Sims work in this phone because they now are nano with NFC all other are micro w NFC except iPhone 5i is nano without NFC.

The NFC chip is in the SIM? Weird. Does that mean theoretically the phone would support secure element NFC SIM's that could re-enable Google Wallet/ISIS if companies would stop bickering and just let us use phones to tap and pay?

There's been some confusion about this too. The point of the new "NFC" SIM cards was to complete the hardware requirements needed for ISIS to be rolled out. These SIM cards have the secure element in them, but they do not have any NFC technology in them. They're just programmed with the secure element needed for ISIS.

Up until recently this was correct but the stores such ever worse now. If if it's an ESN change they take your unlimited. Cust care dose not do and is against Verizon policy so I say f*** the stores. PS I have yet to confirm if this just due to stupid reps or system limitations but for the recorded if you do as the quoted text suggests and the store takes your unlimited Cust service can put it back on

on a side note, when I called Verizon about upgrading my phone, they insisted on doing it over the phone & stated that for exsisting customers you have to do it that way. however, I called a local Verizon store yesterday and they said I can just go into the store and do it.

Unless the sales person over the phone is offering you something special or exclusive, there is no reason why you can't go into any Verzion Wireless dealer and do an upgrade.

OP says once you get it, you get it for the contract but if you can't find a definitive response, who knows.
In all the promo material Verizon it states that you will keep it until you opt into something, no longer how long you keep it. However if you switch to a 3G phone you will lose it, and will be unable to get it back.
Verizon has confirmed that this will be grandfathered once you get it.

[Q] Req. to change plan.

I got a call from my local target store, they informed me my phone was in [its sunday ] however when I went in everything checked out fine. But the guy handling my transfer to my new phone showed me, ATT is requiring me to drop my unli data "grandfathered" plan and swap to the highest data plan they have. Now I could care less, Its like 5gbs or whatever. I maybe hit 2 [maybe] when tethering for a month. BUT. I'd rather pay the 20-30$ I do now for unlimited data then more or less, for limited data. They simply wouldn't allow me to move on. Im guessing its because There hasn't been 4G in my area [i give it 10 years till ATT considers getting full 3G here, first] but they are requiring me to upgrade [downgrade in my opinion] my plan to one of their data-set plans. Now I hate the idea that when I "upgrade" my phone, I have to change my plan. And basically, I refuse to lose my unlimited data to any better mobile phone than mine currently. I call shenanigans.
soo.... My question is [i believe i saw a thread here before but couldn't find it], Can I call ATT and find a reliable rep who will ensure my account keeps its unlimited data, am i screwed by swapping to this newer phone?.
For some background, 4/7/11 Is when I hopped on this railroad of funness. And my data plan is; Smart Choice Data - originating from Alltel USA (state, Montana).
Any and all help/advice would be nice. I'd rather not go for something less than I had my eyes set on.
&& If theres already a post about this [that i couldn't find] please direct me to it :]

How did that work out with you? Did you have them activate the sim in store or no? Because to get specific; I upgraded my phone to keep my plan. Im going from a sim card [fitting in the xperia 10] which doesn't have 4G/LTE.
I thought for sure they'd have to handle it there to extend my plan, but I didnt think they have to activate my SIM card there.
I'm on it too...

If your data plan is truely grandfathered in, you get to keep it when you upgrade. However, typically it can be done only via AT&T's own retail or online sites. 3rd party retailers like Target doesn't have the access to keep your unlimited data plan but some know how to keep it somehow.

Or just buy the phone from a sales rep over the phone. If you're out of contract and say you'd really like a better price, they have a table of prices they're allowed to offer based on how long you've been with them and your FAN# (if applicable). Definitely cheaper than 200.
Oh, and they won't change your plan around that way.
sassafras
Call at&t and tell them what's going on they told me it would be added back in when I called. The system was jacked up and would not let me activate it so they had to manually activate it which took it away. I will see this week if they can add it back in. If not I will no longer be an att customer.

I pre-ordered it through targets electronic section. So at the time it was 150 [50$ preorder] then 100 when it came in. However the sticker price said 179, AND the rep in store [was new there] told me Its going to be even cheaper than that pre-order price. I'll just call tomorrow when I go in there from one of their phones and sit on the phone with them [hopefully] while my info gets transferred over so they can change it asap.
I usually do my data changes over the phone then call back to confirm. This time best buy did it for me, I just kept confirming that I had best buy and that it will remain untouched...

Alright, so to anyone who might care [mod can close this now] I called AT&T and the guy I talked to said he'll put in a case for me saying I need my unli-data grandfathered over and they'll call me later this evening after they know i've picked up the phone [to verify I actually got it] and it'll get switched back. The guy also said pick whatever data plan they give me because it can all be changed.
So that worked out. .

[Q]Best Way to Upgrade to GS3 While Keeping Unlimited?

I thought of a few ways to upgrade while keeping unlimited data.
There was..
Add a new line, with the GS3, give that phone to the unlimited data, and then put a basic phone on that line so it doesn't require the data fees...
There's buy a used cracked screen on eBay, replace the cracked screen with a replacement on eBay..
Any ideas anyone?
I would suggest against buying any used phone, especially for verizon phones, only because of the risk that if the person selling it has any remaining balance on that account that the phone was tied to, it would be useless for you and by law Verizon will be unable to add it to your phone line. If you can confirm that it in fact has no left over balance, then this is probably the best way to go.
Better off going with the plan of adding a line with a basic phone and switching the two numbers, but that will cost you another 40$ every bill and verizon will probably still make you pay an arm and a leg for the SGS III essentially at full retail price if you really want to keep that unlimited data plan. So you might as well just pay full price for the phone and then just switch your number to it in order to keep the unlimited data plan.
Hope this helps.

If I get the GS3 on the extra line and I switch a basic phone onto it, wouldn't it be just 10 dollars a month?
That's basically what I did to keep my unlimited data. Added a line for the GS3, switched it to my line with unlimited data and activated a basic phone I had lying around onto the new line.

Well I have 2 lines that had an upgrade on the same day. Mine had unlimited data, and the other one was my moms who had no data at all. So what we did was use my upgrade to upgrade her line to a sgs3 with 2gb of data a month , then put that phone on my line and put the basic phone back on her line. Then she upgraded with her updrage to a sgs3 for herself

I have a question about this. Does the new use of a SIM card change what you're saying about left over fees owed to Verizon? If a person were to buy a phone from Ebay and put their own SIM in would that be Ok even if the original owner owed money on their SIM?
All I did was order online. I originally went into the store to upgrade, but they told me I had to get a new data plan. I went home and ordered the GS3 online that night and it let me keep my unlimited plan. They probably fixed that glitch by now though.

With the new SIM card system that Verizon has started to use, I am not quite sure about that, but when reading past experiences, and one that my cousin had to go through, they all bought used phones from online sites like ebay and amazon, but ended up being unable to apply them to their own plans because of a check that was done on the phone's background. (I know there is a way to do this yourself, but you pretty much have to have the phone in your possession in order to do so.)
When my family had to add a new line to our family plan for my little brother, a basic phone, verizon wanted to charge us $40, and instead we got him a smartphone which was only $30. Verizon is really pushing smartphones, primarily android devices and especially the SGS3. Essentially what they tried to sell us, but we told them no lol.

yep or you can use one of the following online service to check the IMEI/MEID, Verizon's is the more accurate one, if it says call customer service then the IMEI is bad:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/estore/certifieddevice/cd
http://www.checkesnfree.com/
I upgraded a flip phone line on my plan to the SG3 and gave it 2gb data temporarily. I then had them switch the SG3 to my number, re-enable the flip phone on the upgraded line, and then cancel the 2gb data plan, reverting it back to $10 nondata plan. Verizon will not charge for a data plan that is changed within 24 hours. Worked for me anyhow, but did have to pay the $30 upgrade fee.

Kept my Unlimted Data

Upgraded my S3 today to a S4 and I was still able to keep my Unlimited Data, thanks to the clever workings of the rep at Costco.
Since I still have a regular line on my account, he was able to do some switching around with the lines and keep my data plan intact
According to him Costco does what they can do to keep the customer happy.
BestBuy and Verizon could not do anything for me.

Just curious, did you have more than one line to begin with, and were you still in contract (if so, how long was left)? When upgrading time comes around I don't want to lose my unlimited either.
That makes sense... Costco is a retailer, so if they want to sell you the device @ a discounted price, they can... and from the sounds of things, WILL. Costco will do anything for members and this sounds like a rad deal!
You'll never get that kind of deal from VZ directly. I have unlimited too and bought my S3 of ebay to avoid losing my data.
Shhhh!!! And its very possible to do this directly through Verizon if you take the self service route.

I have 2 data lines and one non data (regular phone) on my account, that is how costco was able to keep my data intact. without the reg line I dont think they would of been able to keep the data unlimited.
Not sure how much time I had on my contract
So I have an none smart phone on my plan that is eligible for an upgrade. If I upgrade my phone with that to keep unlimited data do I have to keep the none smart phone on my data plan and pay the extra $9. Our can I take it off after I upgrade mine with it to keep unlimited.

An upgrade means you can sign a contract to get a phone subsidized. An upgrade is not a courtesy or a freebie, the word is misleading. An upgrade eligibility simply means Verizon or whatever carrier will let you sign a contract to get a phone on subsidy. Use it and the unlimited goes away.
The only way to maintain unlimited data is to not alter your contracted terms. If you sign a new contract it'll go bye bye.
The only ways to get a new phone without losing your unlimited data is to acquire a phone without putting your line with unlimited in contract. There are many ways to do this, none of which I spell out in detail.
If you search ebay you can purchase unlimited data for around $150-200 off people selling it.
It greatly depends on where you go. I recently found a great third party Verizon retailer with a system which still allows people to keep unlimited data. I believe it has to do with the insurance they go through. Corporate and Best Buy go through assurion which absolutely cannot in any shape or form allow you to keep unlimited data.
Other systems do have workarounds and some people are willing to oblige. Just recently I let my brother use my upgrade (my line is unlimited, his is tiered) but every location I asked said it was impossible for him to take my upgrade and let me keep my unlimited data. Well, here I am now still rocking unlimited data with a 2 year contract extension.
The third party location I found was great to us and even offered to help my mom keep unlimited data using a subsidized upgrade using a "musical phones" method.

That's simply not true as long as you don't take the upgrade on the number that has the unlimited data you can upgrade on any of the others that don't and it does not affect the unlimited line at all

The most basic way, of which I have personally used myself, is to have a basic phone attached to your [insert service provider here] service contract. Whenever you have an upgrade for your smartphone line, swap it to the basic phone, then upgrade through that "dumb" phone. Once you receive the new smartphone, activate it on your smartphone account, and reactivate the basic phone on its original line. Voila.
Edit: I am sure there are other methods which may be more effective (not have to pay for a secondary basic phone), however this one has worked for me (and others). Your call as to how you will proceed...
Don't forget the new $30 upgrade fee on Verizon.

Correct. I went into detail with a manager at a VZ store once and he told me you can change anything on your account, like minutes or text, which will not affect your unlimited data. Once you upgrade your phone and get that subsidized price, you lose the data and go on a new 'share everything' package.
You can, however, transfer an account/number to someone and they'll keep unlimited data... so if you have an extra line on your account with unlimited data, you can sign a release of liability over to that person and they will have the line/account exactly as it was on your account, because you're just moving the line from one owner to another. I did this in June with my ex.
Maybe that's what the people on eBay are doing... it's shifty and I'd try to avoid it, though.
This can also work through verizon.
Just talked to a clerk online and told her exactly what I wanted to do and she helped me through the whole process. All you need to do is switch your upgrade to another line with data, renew their contract by buying the phone, from there you can either chose pick up phone in-store or have them ship it to you. Once you get it just activate the phone on your line and your good to go.

I can attest to this. Just upgraded my wifes phone today. I have unlimited data and she does not. We went to the Verizon store and they kept the plan the same.
What we did was use the upgrade on another line and then just swap the sim cards when we got home and it worked fine.
I used the upgrade on a dumb phone on my account. When I get the S4 Can I just put my SIM card in it and activate it without having to call Verizon again?

Verizon has sim cards?

This wouldn't really make sense to someone who doesn't already have a spare data line.. Regardless your still paying for 2 lines, if you cancel there is a hefty fee that goes with it.. If you don't already have a spare data line itd be a better idea just to buy a phone at retail price.. Wouldn't it?

4g phones do.
And we have separate lines because we're on a family plan.

[Q] Buying M8 Full Retail via Website without Plan - Possible?

I have tried, and failed, to figure out how to order the M8 on Verizon's web site without a plan so as to retain my unlimited. I called customer service and that rep couldn't figure it out either. Since the coupon codes only work online, I was wondering if anyone has been successful in ordering a no-contract phone online and it actually processing as no-contract. Even if you click no contract on the order (to get a 599 price), it seems to take you to choose plan, and if you then delete the plan, you delete the phone.
Anyone have with any success?

I have one coming that I was going to use on T-Mobile. I will charge you what I paid we can go through Swappa or CTO
I also tried doing this yesterday, but couldn't figure out how. I ultimately just went to the store lol.. good luck though, hopefully you find a way to do it!
It works fine for me. You should get a pop asking whether you want to upgrade or add a device, you want to upgrade since that is the only way you can keep your plan. You will then be taken back to the screen to select whether you want the contract price or non contract price...Continue on and you should be good to go. At the review stage you will see nothing changed regarding your plan (unless you chose to do so). I didn't actually do this because I'm probably just going to swing over to the store and pick one up, however I was one button away from doing so.
Talking to Verizon reps is usually a waste of time. If you are smart enough to have made it to this forum, you surely already know more than they do.
My plan is sweet as F*** by the way, 44.95 for unlimited everything except phone which is 25 cents per minute. Considering I usually use between 15-75 minutes a month it's a steal. Let's see how many decades I can ride this out?
Turbos right, you have to click upgrade then select the off contract price.

I second this. I tried it yesterday as well and goes through just fine. Didn't actually pull the trigger to buy it though.
Go to Verizon wireless iconic portal you can order the phone only without service

I've tried three times now to order at full retail to keep my unlimited. When I tell it I want to upgrade it tells me that my unlimited data is no longer available, and I have to choose another data package. This wasn't the case if I recall the last time I got a device at retail so I don't know. I was hoping to order it for pickup so I wouldn't have to stand in line for an hour since most of the stores here seem to have 1-2 employees at any given time, but guess if I want it (and want to pick it up, versus getting shipped), that's about the only option.

Log in as existing customer, then choose "All Devices" to see the new HTC One. Very simple for those looking to purchase full price without Verizon messing with your plans.
I've been trying all morning again to order, and it keeps telling me I have to give up unlimited data. I tried to order any other device and THOSE allow me to retain my unlimited, so idk if this is something tied to the M8 or what. I wanted to order it online and use the 50.00 off coupon that was posted here, but now that's not even working.
Still Can't
Seconded - it says the M8 is incompatible with the current plan.
Have you guys tried it by going through the link fr4c provided?

I don't know what to tell you man, works for me. Maybe certain plans are affected differently. Good luck.
Edit: Are you guys coming from an iPhone by any chance? Some old iPhone plans aren't able to be upgraded if I remember correctly.
Yeah just go to swappa

Yeah, that one works, but won't let you use a coupon or the option for in store pickup -- I wanted to save a bit, and have it today.
I did the buy one get with another family member who had unlimited account and that one went down to 6gigs. Not sure if that's helpful but I don't doubt that 6 is plenty for most people.

Not for me. Internet choices are very limited here, so my phone has become my modem/router.
