Hello All,
I have been working on customizing my Sprint S3 for a while, this forum as usual has been so immensely helpful.
I have modified several key things, i prefer to not use the kitchen, not thats it not useful but the main tools just work for me( apktool, smali.jar, baksmali.jar)
I have been poking and prodding every file in the stock S3 rom that I got from XDA, it is DeOdexed which frankly is so much easier to work with.
Without me ranting and boring all of you to death, I want to know if anyone has a list of apps that I can add to the system/app folder and work right out of the rom when I start it. Just flash rom and they work.
Examples:
I know for a fact the following work by simply dropping them into the system/app folder
esexplorer
Titanium Backup
Safe wallet
Amazon app store
The issue is not every app I "place" inside this folder will install, in fact they cause crashes if opened in the rom after installation. I read here somewhere that certain apps install libraries and need to be installed manually, but I am sure that something can be done to be mitigated for this issue would allow me to install more apps like AdAway and many more instead of me modifying the hosts file. Is this even possible or would this be a developer issue that is not meant to be solved as I do not understand how some apps work flawlessly and some just fail miserably. I have even heard to install with a flashable zip but come on I mean 4 more clicks to get a rom working the way I want nahhh.
Not Sure
So, got some views, must be a tough one to answer, I figured when an APK is installed, it is similar to when a program is installed and folders are created on its own, I suppose I lack knowledge on how some programs do not require such things and others require manual installation. Anyone have any insight on my logic?

Can't help you sorry about that but i just wanted to give my opinion on this
i wouldn't appreciate it when i buy a computer that it got preinstalled things like itunes because i maybe have a iPod or iPad and especially nto when it's hard to remove
If google killed the drag and drop hey i added an app to the system behavior i would like to say this to them
Thanks you google!
Why add app to a ROM when user can download them from the play store?
And if you want to add them so badly why not add them to /data/app so they are easier to delete for regular users?

Yeah, sorry I was just replying to your post, not to the OP
I've actually looked into this and it looks like to get stuff to work right when you stick it in /system/app, you need to add lib files into the apk itself and then drop it in /system/app

ROMs never depend on xposed
cooked aka winzipped ROMs maybe do but well that's not a proper way to make a ROM
If users want xposed they can just install it no problem
DSP manager easy just drop the sources files in the folder and build easy as that
and if you really want to "winzip" a rom you can just add the libs for DSP Manager to the system/lib folder
if you take a look at the sources https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager
you'll see a folder called cyanogen-dsp if you look in there and open the Android.mk file you can just easily spot the two modief files for DSP manager
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager/blob/cm-10.2/cyanogen-dsp/Android.mk
one is a conf file and one is a lib
but well just building from source is way better and even easier...
How about you build me a Touchwiz rom from source then.

It took a little time to get everything set up. It would have been up sooner, but I was out of town for work this week and stuck at a hotel with the slowest download/upload speeds in America (seriously downloading ROMs in number of bytes per second).
Glad to be back home and able to get everything else set up and posted. I hope people enjoy.

It worked just fine for me (I just double checked, using the CM6 ROM for base to be sure). It does take a little while after you click the 'Serve Me!' button for it to come up. Then it takes you to another page, and says 'Preparing your rom..' for a bit, then the download link will pop up.
When the link comes up, it will still say 'Preparing,' even though it is done. The link comes up on the left side the add box below, so it is easy to miss. It will say 'Your rom is ready for download' and provide a link.
cool idea OP...just wondering about the Cyanogen build. Is it based on the nightly?

Did you upload your own app? If so you HAVE to upload your own app in zip file.
WOW cool idea worked fine flashed fine using damage base. I love it. One thing does it deox?
How about all the basics like zipalign etc? Are those all default to whatever you use as a base?
Some of the base roms you have listed have different versions. As an example is OMJ...he has 3 versions (w/kernel, w/o kernel and deodexed). How can we tell which one is part of the program?
If I can make a suggestion, in so many people here like to theme, if a choice is to be made you use the deodexed versions.

Whenever possible, I have included deodexed versions. I didn't know OMJ had multiple versions, so I will check what is there and update the OP to be more specific about versions for that and others (probably in the morning).

To my knowledge the kitchen does none of those things. I know dsixda's kitchen is a bit more in-depth, including those features, but this is a lot more basic. Assume all ROMs default to whatever the original developer has done (so, for example, Fresh Evo does zipalign on load, but the stock ROM does not).

The CM base that is provided is the release candidate. Check the link in the OP for the post. I cannot keep up with the CM nightlies, so the kitchen will likely only be updated with major releases (if there is a RC2, or when the final comes out). Sorry for the inconvenience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746276
So if the base rom that I select already was deox... zipaligned etc etc then I'm safe to assume thats how it gets recooked?
It would be cool if you can take some apps from another ROM and place it into your base ROM..
Very cool implementation of the kitchen. Nice work! One of my favorite features is making stock apps uninstallable by moving them to /data/app. Save you the headache of using adb or something like root explorer to manually delete an apk for something you don't want.
Is there any way that explanations of the files could be posted that are shown. The applications may or may not also make sense as they sometimes use internal HTC names. Yes, I know, asking a lot, but it might help those of us who don't know what all the files listed in the first section are for.
Is there any way to change boot animation? I saw on the Nexus One kitchen it was possible...
Skype Beta?
i saw in the kitchen one of your selectable apps is skype for video calls is there a apk for that anywhere
Little OT but where can i just get the Skype apk you have in your kitchen?
Thanks
everything looks great!
only idea and question which comes to mind as im stepping through the menus and options - version numbers for the applications to be added in?
example, wifi tether - what version number is this?
Would it make sense to have an option to include Netarchy's kernel for the ROMs that didn't already have it?

I'd hope not
I tried the official beta, as I'm a member, and a SGS version both on my G-Tablet and they install but wont open as the resolution is not supported. If there's a apk that does actually work. I'd love to just KNOW that. and I'll find it myself.
Thanks!
I tried using the swype from my epic but when I installed it and enable it it just FCs. I did use slideit but the keyboard took up most of the screen. Anybody else have any luck?
This is also something I am very interested in and have yet to get it to work.
I made the changes that rothnic suggested in the build.prop, loaded the lib, and dropped the ap in system/app and my tab doesn't see it at all. I've loaded a ' few' different versions on it that install but just fc. I've spent hours on it with no luck yet.
I'm not giving up hope for someone to release and update.zip but I'm not going to bother rothnic about it (anymore) as I'm sure he's working on roms and such. Even if he weren't, he's done more than his share here and I'm sure one of us will get it.
I'm still working it myself and if I make any progress I will surely let everyone know.
Just a reminder we can't post the .apk for swype here, as we don't want the thread pulled, again.

It sounds like you are doing something wrong when copying it over. It should come up under keyboards in settings. You would enable it there, then long press on an input box to switch to it.
I just did this a second time today and can confirm that it works.

yea, I was hoping that was the case but there can't be much that can go wrong. Download it or copy over via usb... then use root explorer to put it under system/app
For some reason I cant get ADB to work anymore? It had at one time. Do we know of any known issues with flashing that we loose the ability to ADB?
Oh well... I am a patient person and it's not like its a deal breaker for me. All is working pretty smoothly 3 weeks into the game.
Swype / ADB ... Progress / NO Progress
Ok, this is VERY interesting...
I still cant get swype to work. I FINALLY got to ADB push the .apk and the Lib and triple checked the build.prop (even used a couple different ones).
All I get is an FC over and over and when I got to settings-applications-manage, to clear cache, it's grayed out. I booted into recovery and cleared dalvik cache, wipe cache, and data. I have even gone as far as to re-flash the ZPAD 1.1, load gApps, Market Hack, Open GL Hack, and restart the whole swype process again with the same result.
HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART and we may want it posted elsewhere: I couldn't get my win7 to load the proper ADB driver (even though it had worked before). I found an app call ADBWireless (widget). It allows me to hit the widget and connect through ADB wirelessly (local wifi) and push/pull ect.
This was amazing and easy to use. Of course you have to have the Tab up so it wouldn't help for anyone who's in a loop.
When you hit the widget it shows the local ip address to connect to:
-I go to the command prompt \androidsdk\tools and type:
adb connect 192.xxx.xxx.xxx:5555
-it connects, and I am able to see the device
I have to use adb remount and then I'm good to go.
Hope this helps someone down the road. I'll keep checking back here but feel free to PM me if you have any questions (or find an update.zip for swype to work).
I made a little progress last night, got rid of the FCs but I can't get the keyboard enabled in the Settings. I managed to track down a Swype version from a Samsung Gaxlaxy Tab, at least that is what I think it is from, and then I had to find the necessary Lib file from somewhere else but when I push the .so to the Lib through ADB and install the Apk it seems like I'm closer, I can open the Swype settings screen and change things but I just can't get the keyboard enabled in the settings and then of course I can't pick the Swype keyboard when configuring the input method.
What changes were you making to the build.prop?

there was a 'header' so to speak that Rothnic posted that mad a few changes to the build.prop to make it look like portions of the Galaxy. He has it at the 'other' fourm.
Checked the permissions on the build.prop and they looked different. I couldn't just 'change' them in root explorer so I re-inserted the lines on the original build.prop, also did a fix permissions in CM (not that it helped).
Permissions in the lib file are hard to tell what they are supposed to be because several of the lib files there have different ones set. Swype.apk permissions look the same as the others. Still getting same FC's over and over. I was able to get into manage apps and hit force stop and clear (quickly tho) but goes back to the same after reboot.
Thanks for trying, as I said before, it's not a biggie. I just enjoy swype as being from palm and blackberry phone's if it weren't for swype I dunno that I would have kept an Android phone.
I can wait, I've spent too many hours jackin with it (although I did learn about the adb wireless and I am comfortable in pushing file that way now)
I managed to get it working although it is a little laggy. I followed rothnic's info in the other thread and after playing around with the build.prop file it is now working. Hopefully as the roms get faster this will get faster. Thanks for the help.

How did you do it? Can you be specific? Which version of Swype are you using? Where did you find it? What other thread?
Working on latest zpad rom. Had to set permissions - I think the important ones were r-x for User on both the lib and apk. And of course the build.prop edits.

I'm pretty sure the swype word is naughty here so I suggest you google for 'rothnic swype' and check the post on the other forum that comes up.
I used adb to push the modified build.prop to the sd card, along with the .so and .apk files. Then I used adb shell to copy the files to the locations rothnic specifies.

I may be wrong but I believe that all occurs in the boot loaders which means the OS is not loaded. If it's still in the boot loader process then the kernel modules necessary to access certain functions of the hardware (GPS, modem, etc.) are not loaded yet. That would prevent access to the network. A qualified dev might have to speak to it, though, as I might be off-base.
There is a thread in the themes and apps section to flash linda on your phone. Like Raver previously had on VB. You may start there and try replacing the sound files.

Reread his request. He is asking for something not possible.
During boot your phone is loading the necessary radios and files. The project Linda stuff is preloaded with commands that trigger preloaded sounds. That is not realitime just tirggered by certain scripts running.
If you want it to announce each time you unlock that is another animal. IIRC there are several apps that do similar might search the market via a pc so they arent filtered on your phone.
Dear god eollie. I dread opening a thread and finding your commentary after something I post. I hate the thought of hurting your feelings and owing the community an apology.
during boot wont happen... As the phone doesnt have acccess to the network tell after the firmware is loaded...
boot process = Init
Linda the lady you hear during the conversion process is just prebuilt audio files into the voodoo inframats... Haveing the phone beable to tell you your name time and temp outside of the actuall operation of the device isnt going to happen.. Especally sence during boot its intalizing the stuff needed.
that would be like having your laptop check your bank info before you even boot into the os....

so what i gather is that its impossible to get linda to voice the weather because the nwtqoek hasn't loaded yet. However it seems possible to change the preloaded audio files which linda loooks at. hmmm it may be possible to say a symbolic constant (something static) like a name or a phrase during boot. i believe it comes down to the commands which r read during boot.
sorry but now i have another ?

If you wanted to change the boot sound you can do that to have it say your name.
The link lumin posted has a zip file that you can extract and push the files to the respective folders. In theroy you could replace the files with whatever you wanted as long as you rename then to whats there currently and rezip it.

Download the file to your pc. Put your created sound files in place of the ones in the zip that you want to replace. Rezip it and then flash it via CWM. It should put the files in the proper location.
Now regarding your name on boot. If you create a bootsound and name it properly it should play on boot but it would be during your boot animation. Maybe you could get a custom bootanimation with your name and such and it would be close to what your looking for.
Regarding the phone saying your name - check your system folder using Root Explorer app.
If you have system\etc\PowerOn.wav - it's the boot intro.
You can change it to "Hello...."

Now regarding your name on boot. If you create a bootsound and name it properly it should play on boot but it would be during your boot animation. Maybe you could get a custom bootanimation with your name and such and it would be close to what your looking for.

thx it worked. replaced linda with my own custom sounds. i got it actually telling me weather once an hour and how many msgs calls i missed and couple other things.
as far as boot i found the file bootanimation in /system/media/bootanimation.zip i'm running val final black edition. there are no sound files in this folder. just the boot images. would i put
sound file in this folder or would i brick phone at next boot with sound file in images folder? also what extension should i make sound file? i see .ogg refrenced a lot bit soneone above said .wav so im unsure what ext i should make it.

No written expression is/does get taken out of context. Kinda like your initial post to me. Im still trying to figure out how I implied you owed anybody a apology or anything tho. /shrug
back on topic....
xxprincecjxx as raver stated its not possible on boot up. But I do know I seen apps that would do similar on unlock. Im lazy and not going to search. But use a pc browser and search android market it will show unfiltered results. Then you might be able to contact the dev if its not available for the SGS4G.

i agree with you on the fact that this is possibly impossible...
but my friend 10 15 yrs ago someone would have told you it was impossible for a phone to have a 1.5 ghz dual core processor. or the beggining of cell phones someone would have told you it would be impossible to watch a live streaming football game on your cell phone.

You ain't gotta lie to kick it.
Hello all.
So I've been doing a bit of work trying to get Youtube links to work properly on AT&T ROMs (namely 1.85.)
Now, on Rogers ROMs, this isn't a problem. Click a youtube link, and it will ask you what app to open it in. I understand that this feature has been crippled in the AT&T ROMS due to the Apple patent infringements. So, I want to pull the Browser.apk from a Rogers ROM and put it in an AT&T ROM. However, I'm running CleanROM, which is de-odexed. I've pulled Browser.apk and Browser.odex from the Rogers 1.73 ROM, pushed them into /system/app/, replacing the de-odexed apk that was in there. And fixed the permissions of course. However, the "Internet" icon doesn't show up, nor does it appear in Settings -> Apps.
So, can anyone help me deodex the Browser.apk/odex from Rogers 1.73?
Yes, I'm aware that the apps in 1.73 might have framework differences that are causing it to not work, but I'd still like to try it out.
(As for more details on the youtube fix, I'll be posting that info in the General section.)
I'm actually pretty sure that the youtube clicking thing doesn't depend on the browser you are using. Its an apk in /system/app called HTCLinkifyAdapter or something like that (HTCLink_____, i forget ).
I'm saying this because even using Chrome Beta the links don't open in Youtube.

You're correct. As mentioned in the post I made in the General forum, you need to remove HTCLinkify. Once you do that, links from external apps stop working with the stock browser. If you remove the HTC Browser and use Chrome (or any other 3rd party browser,) then the youtube app functions the way that it should. That's why I'd like to deodex the HTC Browser from a Rogers ROM, as it *should* (but not necessarily will) work fine.
I still have a few other things to try, but I'm bogged down with paperwork tonight.

Ah okay! If you post the odex and apk here I can deodex it for you!

Sweet, thanks!
If it works, I'll attach it to the thread on the General board. It'd be pretty great to be able to remove that limitation from the AT&T ROM's.
I deodexed everything from the Roger's RUU yesterday so here it is...
I need this app, can someone help.

Wow thanks a lot, that came in handy! :good:
Where did you get it from? I noticed it is in version 1.0.2 (see Settings > About), however latest version on CM GitHub (github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager/tree/cm-11.0) only says 1.0.1 in its changelog... Did you extract it from a ROM? Any idea why this version (with actualised changelog) cannot be found anywhere on CM infrastructure (gerrit, github...)?

Extracting from a ROM is the quickest way and most ROMs have 1.0.2 in them.

You mean, compared to building from source ? This wasn't the reason why I was asking: I was just trying to find a definitive answer on "what's the latest version of this app", and official source code is always the best option to sort out such enquiry
It seems strange to me that most ROMs have an 1.0.2 version while CM repos don't seem to contain anything higher than 1.0.1 (by changelog comparison). So my question remains: where does that updated version come from?
Cheers

You were probably looking at the cm-10.2 branch lol. The default branch of CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager is cm-10.2 if you look here: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager/branches

I thought so at first, but if you look at this branch's CHANGELOG.md file, you'll see it hasn't been modified in two years and mentions the "1.0.1" version as the latest one. This is why I've precisely mentioned the branch URL in my first post, but because of my inability to post links you might have overlooked it Thanks for your investigations nonetheless!

Look in AndroidManifest.xml
Didn't see that you already mentioned you looked in cm-11 branch, they just haven't update the changelog but the app that gets compiled is 1.0.2.

Thanks, this one does indeed mention 1.0.2! However, where does the changelog entry in the app's "Settings > About" screen come from then?

Makes sense Is it a recurring part in any Android app (I'm no dev so pardon the naivety of my question(s))? Still, I believe think they could update that CHANGELOG.md file at some point, that would clear up some confusion...
Do you know of any other good free/libre file manager? Although this one quite pleased me when I discovered Cyanogenmod a few weeks ago (I'm pretty new to Android, just got my first droid phone last month), which is why I wanted to install it on my current OmniROM, it doesn't seem to be actively developed. I'm just wondering which features I could have a need for in the near future that this file manager doesn't offer... Thanks.
I normally use CM App Installer from the play store to get the file manager and the torch app

In this case it's raw text, but you can put images in there as well (any files in fact). Files in res/raw won't be processed/compiled, it'll just be added to the package.
For example, in CMFileManager the changelog (excerpt):
Code:
Version 1.0.2
-------------------
* move bookmarks and history into a navigation drawer (by Florian Edelmann)
If you wanted to use that in strings.xml you would have to put them in <string> tags:
Code:
<string name="changelog">Version 1.0.2
-------------------
* move bookmarks and history into a navigation drawer (by Florian Edelmann)
</string>
(For those reading this in Tapatalk, you can't see the xml tags since it handles it differently)
In some cases it can cause issues, and it's sometimes it's better not to clog up strings.xml with a large amount of text (like this changelog). Also easier to modify in some cases (again, like a changelog).
I use Root Explorer, but it's a paid app. There's a free version but afaik it can't modify files which need root access.

Nice, thanks for the tip this looks interesting! However, as the author says in the app description he builds them himself when he has time to do so. Therefore pulling them from a current nightly or latest M release (as Lethargy mentioned) seems to be as good (and that is one less person to rely upon). I also wanted to replace omniROM's Launcher3 by CM's Trebuchet, so I'll have a go at it (thanks to MultiROM ).

Thanks for your explanations, I better understand now.
Concerning the file manager, I'm looking specifically for free/libre software app (as in "open source", but I don't like this expression and prefer to stick to Richard Stallman's definition). A search in F-Droid didn't turn in that many results, so that's why I was asking "at large"... I know many apps on the Play Store are libre software, but because the store doesn't mention their license it gets pretty tricky to find them. I try to always favour free/libre apps when I can.

I'm not too sure of any others then. :silly: I'd just stick to CM File Manager if you specifically want a decent one that's open source. I just prefer Root Explorer over CM File Manager since it's a little better for root file management and it can access SMB (so I can access files on my PC without bothering to plug in my USB cable so often).
Maybe look around XDA for one.

Sure, will do. Thanks for the very amicable offer, I must admit I often find myself quite lost within the Android realm

Makes sense. Well for now I'm indeed fine with CMFM, and I've found a few alternatives thanks to http://alternativeto.net/software/open-manager/?license=opensource&platform=android (still can't post links sorry okay, now it looks like I can, that's nice). XDA forums are such a great resource for anything mobile/telephony related! It is rare that a single website gathers the biggest part of a development community. So great.
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Does it work on Lollipop?
