So I bought the Ultra yesterday. The speaker sounded great at first. Tonight I started a song on Google Music and it was loud at first. Then it seemed to autocorrect the volume. The volume is now the same between half and full. I cannot get it to turn up any louder and it is pretty quiet.... About half of what my S3 could put out.... This is between both the Pandora and Google Music apps. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a setting I am not seeing to turn this "feature" off?

try a different app then you will know if its the phone or the app.
for what it's worth I've had google play music do weird things with the volume on some songs. (not a droid phone)
So I called VZW tech support last night and they told me to take the phone back and get a new one. And it also started doing it on speaker phone too.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Isn't the phone supposed to do that? I believe I read somewhere the phone adapts to how you listen to songs... Will look for the article.

I did a factory reset and that seemed to fix it for a while. Music played normally for about 6 hours then it randomly started cutting the volume level again. It gets so quite it sounds like the volume is only at 10-15%. I went to Verizon and couldn't get it to reproduce the effect in front of the agent. They said to come back if it keeps happening.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I honestly believe that the phone is supposed to do that. It supposed to adapt to your listening preferences. I can't find where I read it but I will.. Just return it before your 14 days are up and see if the new one does the same. They shouldn't charge you.

Turn off the equalizer and surround under Sound > Audio Effects
Effects Profile: custom
Surround: off
Equalizer: off
Soooo.... sometimes it has no volume at all. I tried suggestion from the post above and it didn't seem to help. Too bad I really like the 5" screen. I think I going to return it and buy the Moto X instead though.

My volume does weird things using Google Play music as well. I was walking yesterday and had it on full volume. Never had it that way on any other device.
Past Moto phones have had a "High volume can harm your ears" warning that turns down your music unless you shut it off. Maybe that remnant of Blur stuck around and needs to be disabled somehow? Just a thought.

i do get a message that says that when i'm listening to bluetooth audio and go to turn the volume up on the phone. but, knock on wood, it still lets me turn the volume up.
edit: actually it looks like this: http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/229041-how-do-i-disable-unsafe-volume-warning.html - so if it happens on a NEXUS, then it's not motorola, it's Google (oh wait i forgot, they are motorola...and all of freaking android)

i have that problem, i tend to use speaker more. hopefully a mod comes soon
I'm running CM7 RC1 with Voodoo kernel, not sure if the Voodoo sound patch has any part in this, but the volume on my phone is quite loud when using Skype. But in a noisy environment, I'd rather use a pair of noise blocking earphone or headset.
Yea i can barely hear the other person as well. I dont know if its just in my head but it almost seems like it started after the 2.3.3 update

During a call turn the volume down and then back up. When you turn it down you won't notice much difference but you will when you turn it up again. It seems that the volume settings thinks it's at max when it isn't and you need to reset it by turning it down.
Hmm ill give that a shot

Don't think so. The same issue was present with the N1, kernel developers implemented an audio boost feature that really helped this issue out. Hopefully we will see the same for the NS soon enough.
I would LOOOOOVE for an audio boost similar to the N1 to be implemented for the NS.

[Q] volume of the front speakers? Help please
hello all
does anyone know the phonecodes for the nexus s (service mode)? I want to increase the handset (speaker to the ear)!
in the galaxy s, he is **#*#197328640#*# but not work
nexus s CM7 netarchy 1.2.7
sorry for my bad english
does anybody know how to raise the volume of the front speakers?
I'd like to do this also. Default max volume is too low, sometimes hard to hear what people say.
exactly!
It must be possible to increase the volume
with the voodoo kernel only the speakers on the back work
I have the same problems, in call volume is too low :-( and its not the provider because with my Galaxy S the volume is okay.
Phone speaker is quiet but with my bt earpiece I can get it loud enough to hurt my ears.
Sent from my MattedBlues CM7 Nexus S from the XDA Premium app.
i don't know about you guys, but i have no problem hearing the call even in busy ( noisy ) streets environments.
using any of the 3 methods:
normal ear speaker
back speaker
BT headset
on 2.3.3 stock, no mods of any kind
temporarily solution:
During call set volume to min and then to max and then it's OK. After reboot problem is back.

Hey guys! Tonight I just noticed that my external loud speaker sounds really weak and low. I have it turned all the way up and its low.. I know my battery life is in the yellow with 21% left. Does the phone lower the volume when battery gets to a certain point? This phone has been flawless. Now I'm afraid it has a problem

I think the obvious thing to do here would be to charge your phone and see if it goes back to normal. Agreed?

Agreed. Lol. But I just did a google search and found several people complaining about the same thing. They said the phone was working and loud speaker was fine. After a few weeks the speaker was really low.. They restarted the phone, and it was loud again. But after a few days went back to being low. Maybe software issue?

Hello,
Only the loud speaker is affected? Headphones work fine?
Do all types of sound have the volume problem, Calls, Videos, youtube, Music? Does your ring tone come out at full volume?
Do you use google nav or any other similar app that outputs commands and such through the loud speaker? I ask because I read somewhere (maybe here on xda) that people were thinking it was maybe due to such apps.

Ok so today I found out that the volume does not change with the last 3 or 4 pushes of the volume up button, it does not increase. Nor the same for lowering. It's like its stuck at 60% volume. What do I do..? Return it for a replacement or stick with it?

I have the same problem, only noticed it the other day when I decided to play some music the volume was really low on the external speaker so I decided to make a phone call and the volume seemed low in both the earpiece and external speaker so out of dumb luck I decided to restart the phone. Volume got louder in both but eventually got lower again after a few days. Also, noticed that the external volume doesn't seem to change with the last 2-3 clicks up or down.
Hoping this is a software issue since otherwise it works great, don't really want to return it and possibly get one with other issues.

This is the exact same problem I am having now.. I too noticed that the ear volume is low as well. I did restart the phone. It worked good for a day. Then same thing. I too am like you. Hopefully there is a software fix for it. I called at&t. They said That HTC handles the tech support for the HOX. Maybe you should call them too and complain. If they hear it from someone else, it might be good.

I've noticed a very similar issue with my One X. I keep my phone at full volume and every once and a while the volume from the back speaker gets a bit quieter. Nothing seems to fix it, except for rebooting the phone.
Ok, my Samsung Captivate stopped ringing when someone is trying to call me. And I can't hear anything when I put it on 'speaker phone'.
It looks like the speaker phone (in the back is dead)? Yes, I've checked many times to make sure the call volume is on at the highest setting.
And I can no longer hear any sound when playing game or listening to music/video.
Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks

Anyone else having a problem with their sounds after "un-muting" the phone? Example being I mute the phone at night or for a meeting, then when I turn the volume back up I notice my sounds for texts, fb, emails, etc do not work anymore, and I have to go back and manually reset them. The phone ringer does still work though. Just curious if it's something I am doing wrong or have overlooked. Not rooted or unlocked. Yet.
My phone does the same thing with the sounds. Except ive never muted my phone and im unlocked and rooted

The only thing I've noticed about sound is that ringtones and notifications go thru the head phones or bluetooth device when one is connected, instead of the back speaker.
Further Observations
Last night I tried turning the volume down to the lowest setting, but that was no good either. Today I have received a handfull of emails with no sound at all after I turned the volume back up. I can't verify texts yet as I haven't received any to this point. If it makes a difference or not these are all custom alerts or tones, not "factory" sounds.
Mine r factory tones i still hav the problem. I believe its a software issue the brand new phones have

Moto or ICS?
Hypothesis
After several weeks, I think I may have figured it out somewhat, at least for me. It seems if I have the phone plugged into my computer usb either in mass storage or media mode, and get an alert of some kind (sms, email, etc) it will cause the sounds issue. If I just use the wall charger, I don't seem to get the sounds issue.
Hello all. I am the owner of a Motorola Droid MAXX as my signature can testify. It is easily the best smartphone I've owned but there are a small handful of questions. First one follows.
The volume rocker on the left seems to only control the ringer volume. To change the notifications or media volume I have to go to Settings > Sounds. This hasn't been true on all my previous Android phones. Why is this different? Is there an app that I can buy that will synchronize the volumes when I press the hardware buttons? Have others experienced this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sent via Motorola Droid MAXX
Mine's working just fine. Notification volume levels have been tied in with the ringer volume levels since ICS, if I'm not mistaken, and changing the volume in an app that's playing sounds affects the media volume on my end at least.
Mine is definitely not synchronized. Any idea how to fix it?
Sent via Motorola Droid MAXX
Mine is the same as the OP

Mine also has no option to synchronize that I can find.
I believe there are some apps that have widgets that let you see the volume on the home screen and quick click into the volume change setting. Ill have to go find one b/c its a pain in the butt to not know what level my notifications are at unless I go into settings.

Its also hard to get adjusted to the vibrating mechanism in this phone. You will rarely hear it vibrate but you can sort of feel it if it's in your pocket.
Sent from my XT1080 using xda app-developers app
Weird, I tested it out and it looks like my notification volume isn't synchronized either even though all my other ICS/JB phones have been. As far as I'm aware it acts like it is though, I'm pretty sure my text notifications at least have been quieter or louder at different times. I wonder if I should let Motorola know or if it's something intentional?
Volume Control in the Play Store works and is free, but occasionally the ringer volume doesn't change the notification--even if linked--when using the volume rocker; but it works flawlessly if you open the icon and use the slider. But not bad for free.
Haven't tried the paid one linked above to compare them. Maybe after work when I have more time.
