[Q] HTC Desire 500 - A Decent Upgrade? - General Questions and Answers

Now that I'm upgrading from my 2 year contract on an HTC Desire S I've been looking at the market. The HTC One is obviously the current flagship HTC and mainly because I've never used an android phone without Sense I'm not sure if any other brand would suit. Trouble is I've held a "One" and don't really like the metal body. My missus has an HTC One X and it feels great. So looked for a One X+ and I can't find one on contract. 6 months old and already abandoned. The only phone that seems ok is the upcoming HTC Desire 500. Middle range phone, sense 5, nice screen and a memory card slot.
I just want a 4.3" decent spec android with 32GB of memory either on the phone or via a memory card. Not sure about non sense phones although looked at a windows 8 phone - but i don't think the OS is mature enough yet.
Any ideas?

Please ask here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620179
Thanks!

OP didn't post in the other thread. But I'm also looking at either this or the Moto G as an upgrade from my two year old Desire S.
Are there any other competitors ?

[Q] Best android phone that I can buy

Hi Friends,
Recently I lost my Sony Xperia X10i. I'm in the process of claim insurance. Now my question to my friends here - Which android mobile I need to buy. I'm a big fan of Android .
I'm from India, so please suggest me that is available in India. My budget is up to 30K .
Thanks & Regards,
Naresh Kumar
I can say go for Samsung galaxy S Or HTC Desire HD Htc Desire HD Will be available during this month. I 've heard prices will be around 35K But Battery drain is the problem in HD I guess
Depends on what you are looking for.
Nexus S or Galaxy S will give you the best processing power, Galaxy S also has the super AMOLED screen. The HTC Desire Z is very overclockable, which can put it above the Galaxy S even, and has a slide-out keyboard.
HTC Desire HD also has a big screen with good construction and great software (HTC Sense...best software skin on Android).
If you want plain unmodified Android then wait for the Nexus S, which would be the only phone with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
hTC all the way
Desire Z or Desire HD
HTC desire is a good choice.
I have HTC smart and am happy with its features and apps. I think HTC desire will be also best I had just deal with HTC and its first time I am using Android. you will get many best deals at this Christmas.
Good Luck!

i just switched yesterday from an iphone 4 to an HTC Droid Incredible. its, in my book, 1000x better than the iphone. yea it doesnt have the front facing camera like the Evo, but usin it on the iphone for facetime purely raped the battery life. hence why i went w/o. im still tinkering with it, like i did both my iphones, and i'll post a full review for those who wanna kno more about it (and if there isnt one already).
Motorola Milestone 2 is a good idea.. but i'd wait for Nexus S or lg star..
LG STAR HAS A TEGRA 1GHZ PROCESSOR.. but youll have to wait longer than nexus S for that

Yeah i came from a 3gs,iPhones are boring. You could probably get a Htc HD2 cheap and you can port android to it,there very good at running android, fast, stable, they even beat the Nexus one and desire at running it
IF you like options, get a cheap HD2 lol. It can run Wm 6.5, Android, and ubuntu and possibly even wp7. and the hardware is still good. Otherwise Desire HD sounds good but I highly recommend the HD2 for versatility
I will be changing my phone in June. Right now I have HTC Hero, and I just love it, it is by far the best phone I have ever owned. Can not stand Iphones.....
So my question, is whats on the horizon ???? like I say, it will be June 2011 when I upgrade, what should I be looking at ?
Thanks
Ian

30k INR is about 660 USD, right?
you could buy HTC Desire with that, I think..
or perhaps, just buy HTC HD2.. with cedesmith desireHD2 build, 2000 quadrant score is just a small number..
I've been with T-Mobile for around 7 years and have 7 lines. We have tried about every phone out there. One year we went through 103 phones. We have owned every myTouch phone, including the Fender but excluding the new one, almost all of the BlackBerry phones made, many nokia phones, motorola phones and of course countless htc phones (including the HD7, returned the next morning).
No matter what platform HANDS DOWN the Samsung Vibrant S (I guess that would include AT&Ts Galaxy S) is the best out there. My kids had the inexpensive samsung flip phones and they were great, but beyond the very low end Samsung I have never been really happy with their phones that were almost smart phones, more like frustrated because you could "almost" do what lets say the HTC phones could but your Samsung was always not set up for all the same apps, stuck with all kinds of just small bumps.
Just this weekend 3 people were deciding what phone to get and they are now all getting the Vibrant once there contract is up. I personally added a line just to get this phone. Now my Vibrant in rooted (never done that before) and is customized with BlackFroyo I got off here. Of course the 3 friends all want to do the same.
Samsung has all the technology, thank goodness T-Mobile got their hands on it!!! Buy it you won't be sorry.
get the nexus S, period

I must admit I would have agreed with you before I bought the Vibrant. We've been with T-Mobile for 7 years and have a total of 7 lines... I won't repeat what I already posted but have gone though over 103 phones (unfortunately, kids) in one year about 90% smart phones.
Samsung DID IT RIGHT with the VIBRANT!!!!
I love window based phones as well and REALLY lean towards HTC until now. Returned the HD7 within 14 hrs, maybe I'll try again once it's more established.
So I bought my first choice and everyone who sees it or uses it (it's rooted with BlackFroyo theme) has decided this is the phone they'll be getting.
What was so disappointing about the Galaxy S Series? The working phones we have right now are 2 myTouch slides, 1 myTouch G1, 1 myTouch Fender, partially broken Samsung Galaxy (I agree with you about this phone), 1 or 2 different BlackBerrys, but returned the HTC HD7 & HTC Pro Touch 2, & gave away the Slide to get this Vibrant and now I have 6 others under my roof who want me to buy them a Vibrant.
I know everyone has different opinions and needs but to imply that owners of the Galaxy S Series have less experience with SmartPhones than those who own HTC phones is just a little narrow minded. I did feel the way you did but it was the "NEWEST" HTC phone that pushed me to the Samsung. Reviews everywhere were overwhelming that if you were going to buy a T-Mobile phone get the Vibrant.
-nothing personal, it would just be nice if you would back your statements up with some facts because it sounds like you're talking about another Samsung
Buy HTC Desire Z its a great phone.

What is best for me may not be for you, said that, theres no such "best" phone.

[Q] What to buy?

Hi im in the process of looking for a new upgrade from my touch pro2.
I was intending to get a Desire S, due to its aluminium body and 1ghz processor. But my provider has the Motorola Atrix and Samsung Galaxy S on offer too.
All 3 phones cost the same monthly fee when bundled with the same phone plan.
What would you get? HTC Desire S, Moto Atrix or Samsung Galaxy S. My last 2 phones have been htc and Ive been very impressed with the build quality of them. I maily use the phone for web browsing, watching movies, and occasional games and do enjoy loading roms etc.. Anyone have any advice on what to get or what not to get?
i would get the moto atrix fingerprint + dualcore ownz
Don't get Moto due to locked bootloader. I had to choose between Galaxy S, Nexus S and Desire S.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
get the moto atrix!
Well Desire S has a locked bootloader too. And up to now, there are no updates about the unlocking announcement of HTC
Thanks for the advice.
Ive checked out the atrix a little on youtube and it does look nice and responsive. Seems lag free and that will be strange comming from winmo 6.5 on my htc touch pro 2 lol. The games on the atrix run very well too.
I suppose its more furture proof being dual core and I am a nvidia fanboi lol.
So the Desire S and Atrix both have locked bootloaders? So no flashing on either device untill either of the companies provide an unlock or someone hacks one?
I'd say go Desire S....(in fact I did, and I also came from a HTC WM device - topaz)
You're used to HTC phones, you obviously like the Sense look and feel and you'll get a head start with the conversion to Android having the already familiar Sense as you user interface.
Currently Desire S and Moto both have locked bootloaders but Desire S can be unlocked with XTC and will hopefully be software unlocked either by XDA Alpharev or HTC.
Good luck picking!
Yeah I do like the sense look and feel, and have been sick of trying to run android on my touch pro 2 only to have it sleep of death on me after 20 mins
Im wondering how much difference the dual core vs single core cpu in these phones would have on phone lag, especially when it comes to web browsing/navigation etc. Are most of you Desire S users happy with the power under the hood, so to speak?
Also I work in a pretty rough environment and my old touch pro 2 has dents and scratches all over it, its survived being dropped from 3mts in the air down onto concrete lol. It wont die.
Ive read the moto atrix seems plastic like, that worries me. Do you think the desire s would be pretty tough?

Desire S seems plenty fast for me, I don't play games on the device and browsing speed is mainly determined by the network speed as oppossed to CPU power.
Screen protector and a case should be a must, even though Desire feels like a strong well made device you won't want to wreck it and it will still be smaller than your old device.
anyway u still don't know what apps for android are coming and how much cpu they'll need, so with a dual core u are more future proof than with a single core
On my opinion, I recommended to buy desire s, I moved from touch pro 2 as well , MOTO atrix's screen is bull****, don't buy it , you will loss money, galaxy s2 is best one, but price is too high at momnent, just wait couple weeks
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
hmm thanks for the advice guys, ill go to a store tomorrow and compare the 2 phones builds. I am thinking ill probably go with the desire s.

I am more or less on the same boat, but I'm torn between desire s, galaxy s2 and iphone 4. (the dark side is tempting a bit )
Coming from hd2 with desire rom (lost it... ) I know I will love d.s, also it is the cheapest of those above so more likely I'll get one as soon as I will leave the bath.
I had a Atrix for a while but ended up sending it back. It is a really nice device, super fast and pretty good build quality (although i'd say the Desire S is better).
The negative for me were:
1. Battery Life sucked (although the Desire isn't amazing in this area either)
2. Motoblur sucked: Really disliked the interface although Sense is also showing its age (Launcherpro ftw)
3. Apps: I've found a total of 2 apps where I can see the benefit of a dual core processor; Dungeon Defenders and Google Earth (noticeably smoother on the atrix)
4. Cost: Total cost of phone over the contract was 1/2 that of Desire S, In a few months I'm pretty sure I could pick up a dual core tablet for the difference.
One thing, I am playing the lastest gameloft games (The games that have the best graphics) and they work perfect... i dont see why i need a dual core phone?!?!
BTW Its Dungeon Hunter 2... an AWESOME game xD
Between Galaxy S and HTC Desire S I’d go for the second cause 1st I personally don’t like Samsung’s implementation of UI and menu and 2nd HTC has a more solid build.
Ive had a SGS and had nothing but problems. The phone spent more time in the repair centre than i it was with me so eventually i sold it and bought a DHD and now also own a desire s.apart from the screen size the desire s is a better all round phone imo.sgs had the motherboard changed 2 times, screen turned dull and maps was miles in accurate plus no camera flash

I'd say go Desire S, but then I'm biased, I think that you'll love Sense over TouchWiz in no time.
Well thanks for everyone's input. I ended up with the desire s, the atrix looked good, but I didn't like the MOTO theme. The HTC sense is much nicer looking and I'm familiar with it. So far the fone is great. I'm missing my touch pro 2 keyboard, but ill be use to the onscreen kb soon enough.
Thanks again, time to learn as much as I can about this new world of android.

Time for new Android Phone! But which?

Hello,
My HTC Touch Cruise which I have used for tooo long, is slowly dying...
So, I'm looking for a new phone, my requirements being:
->Android
->Sim card (not sim-less! I regularly use 3-4 simcards travelling between countries)
->HTC (Sorry Samsung!)
Having done some research I have noticed that the main players are:
->HTC Sensation
->HTC Desire HD
Sensation, being a newer model, has higher specifications.
I would be grateful for help with some of my doubts:
1)Are there any other HTC models worth consideration?
2)Are you aware of any new models/developments worth waiting for (I don't mind waiting a month or two), like e.g. new Android series?
3)Are there any significant issues suggesting that getting HTC Sensation would NOT be a good idea?
4)Is there any difference between HTC Sensation models in UK and US?
Thank you for your help!
Best,
Theriel
You kiddin' right? Comparing Sensation to Desire HD?
Sensation belong to the new generation with dual core processor while Desire HD still belongs to the old single core generation.
The only problem with Sensation for being the newest flagship model is usual...the price...
If you can afford it, there is nothing which can beat Sensation.
Hi,
Thanks for the response, but... comparison between these two models has been only one of my questions. Also, not always newer = better, hence my question.
I still would be grateful if somebody could address other of my questions (especially 1,2,4)...
Best,
Theriel
Well, you could wait until HTC releases even better phones. I've got desire HD and it's a good phone, but sensation is much better (and worth more also). Of coure I haven't tested sensation but the specs says it all.
The Sensation is a much better choice than the Desire HD. If you are still interested in the older generation you should really look into the Incredible S2 as specs wise its identical to the Desire HD but has a better screen and much improved battery life. Also the Incredible 2 just received its root yesterday .
If you can afford it, get the Sensation. A dual-coure HTC phone with 1080p video recording, dual cameras and a qHD screen is an unbeatable combo I haven't used one yet, but it looks amazing.
I have the Desire HD and I love it, I upgraded from a BB Bold a few months ago.. If the Sensation was out then I would have bought it. It is definitely the more affordable option since it is older. Also, if you can do without the FF camera and super high resolution screen ( the one on the DHD is still good), then get the HD. There are several Sense 3.0 builds for the DHD out now (if you are willing to root the phone), so there really isnt a reason to buy the Sensation just for the software. I am running Virtuous Unity ROM with a leaked official build of Sense 3.0 scaled down for 800x480 sized screens and I have to say it is the fasted and most stable software I have ever used. But if you want the top of the line at the moment, go with the Sensation.
What I meant and what the others are trying to say :
Beside being new and having better specs especially the dual-cored processor, HTC Sensation is of cource more expensive.
I just feel it is a bit unfair to compare Desire HD with the Sensation, HD is a very good unit but Sensation is simply better...again with one note in mind that Sensation is more expensive.
How much are you willing to spend honestly?
HTC phone recommendations:
- Desire (cheapest)
- Desire S or Desire HD (somewhere in the middle)
- Sensation (most expensive)
I agree with "aaa" and I add to the list LG dual, with new processor.

On look out for a new android phone but.....

Hi
I am starting to look for a new phone to replace my HTC Desire which is coming to the the end of its contract and will be due an upgrade in January. I have been looking around for a new phone, but i am struggling to know what to get.
Obvious one to look at would be Samsung Galaxy Nexus, galaxy s2 etc.....but they seem massive against my desire...
If people own one of these phones, do they not find the size is a hindrance while on the move?
I Guess my question is what would people suggest as a good phone to get which is a similar size to the HTC Desire?
By the way i live in the UK, if that affects what is available.
thanks in advance
Andy
Similar size would be Nexus One, Desire S or the slightly bigger Nexus S. Apparently everyone needs phones the size of laptops now so there's not much choice for normal sized devices.
I recommend the Desire S
Actually no, its not much of an upgrade, but if you are happy with the Desire, you could upgrade and get a Desire S on a even cheaper contract.

Newbie, Thinking of buying a Desire S

Hi, Im thinking of getting a Desire S as my next phone. Im not exactly new to this as i had a regular Desire for about 18 months which i rooted, s-off and installed many customs roms.
I was looking for a upgrade and bought a Sensation a few weeks ago but its not for me as i find the phone abit too big. Even though its really fast, I dont find it comfortable to use.
The only phones that i can see that are similar size to the original desire is LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix or Desire S. But as I want Sense, the Desire S is only the option. Even though it is not dual core, it should be much quicker than a Desire as;
- Has 50% more RAM. 768MB compared to 512- 1GB internal memory so no need for A2SD which should make things faster- Processor, even though its a 1GHZ i believe it can be overclocked to over 1.8GHZ and at a safe 1.4GHZ. Is this correct?
In terms of ROMS, the Desire S has got a large collection.
Anything else that i have missed out or need to know?
Thanks
Hi, please tell me where did you find it ?
This configuration is awesome.
From what you've written there, you already know the answer as to which phone you should be getting. If you are lookin for something th same size as the Desire S then there is no real competition as faras I'm concerned - not just for design and specifications, but also for ROMs, development and user forum support on XDA
As the Nike adverts say "Just Do It!!"
Thanks guys, am I correct regarding the overclock statement I've made?
Hi.
If You are not bothered with not having the latest tech, then I would say Desire S is a good choice.
So far android experience is great on it, haven't found any real reason to go with multi core just yet.
Things You'll like - alloy unibody, size, battery life (depending on rom and useage), overall speed, quite decent main camera + front cam (skype works very well), price (I wouldn't sign for a long contract on it though).
Cons - well... battery life (still, ain't bad but more energy efficient devices are going to be in sale soon)
Good luck.
You are correct with all statements
The Desire S also has better battery life than the original, thanks to its larger capacity, and the more optimized 2nd gen CPU (which is very good for OC'ing)
I have my ds for 6 months now, and im very happy with iti had the same problem like you (the sensation was to big)
I had the choice between samsung galaxy s and desire s, and i have choosen the ds because of sense too
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
Decision made, desire s it is. Just need to put my sensation on eBay now.
Also noticed that sensation xl has the same CPU as the desire s which is clocked to 1.5ghz.
I think there is a thread on here somewhere about the CPU being the same as the one in the Sensation, and i think that though it is the same model number the one in the Sensation it is a later generation model so it is designed differantly and runs at a higher speed.
The only other thing i would say is perhaps wait a month or so and see what new models HTC announce. it could be that the Desire S gets upgraded similar to the move from Desire to Desire S.
Edit heres link to the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459911
There is a HTC primo coming out in a few months but that only has 512mb RAM.

Yup, you missed something huge. THE MWC IS COMING IN LESS THAN A MONTH !!!!!! The Desire S was revealed at MWC last year. Surely, something waaaaaay better will show up this year. I LOVE my desire s, but i won't reccomend you to buy it at this time.
The Galaxy S Advance has been announced, it's roughly the same size as the Desire S (4.0 inch screen), similar price but has much better hardware (Dual core 1 Ghz CPU, Super Amoled Screen). HTC must compete with this, so somthing big (with sense ) will come at MWC. TRUST ME. Even if you don't like what comes, you can buy the Desire S later, it's not like HTC is gonna stop supplies

Sadly, as much as I love my Desire S too, I can only agree with Shrome.
Unless you aren't too bothered about having the latest and greatest, and aren't a tech-head, this phone is recommended and will serve you well for basic smartphone tasks.

I'm sure the Desire S will serve for a lot more than just basic tasks. I know synthetic benchmarks are not a lot to go by, but considering the stock Galaxy Nexus gets 32 fps in Nenamark 2 and my Desire S gets 27 fps (without any overclock), it's somewhat reassuring and makes me believe the Desire S still has a bit of kick remaining.

I believe the HTC Primo will be the replacement for the Desire S but it only has 512MB RAM.
Also, i presume the phone will be launched towards summer time and have a price of £300? Whereas the Desire S is available on ebay now for roughly half that price.

Although the leaked specs say 512mb, I highly doubt the device would come like that.
HTC wouldn't downgrade the succesor.
Leaked specs aren't always true you know
The HD2 original leak said it has 384mb RAM. But it ended up having 448mb (576mb actually, if you unlock the hidden RAM)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
You can't be sure of any of those things( except the price, maybe). The leaks are HIGHLY unreliable. I'm 99% sure it won't have lower RAM than the Desire S if it's a successor. For all you know, it may be a succesor to Wildfire S, cost waaaay less, and the Desire S may have a different succesor entirely
Hmmm, not sure now.
When will the official release be of these phones? And when they become available, are we talking weeks/months?

325i Please see my response to your other thread about coming from the old Desire. I just edited it. Noticed a worrying trend on the recent Amazon reviews.
Regarding new phones releases, it depends. If the manufacturers have any sense, they'll have the product ready to swing into the shops riding on the hype-wave from MWC. Others may want to hang back and see how their product is received before committing to getting x amount of them made.
For the first time I'm not 100% about sticking with HTC for my next phone. I just don't trust their reliability and after sales support so much any more. I buy my phones outright SIM-free and unlocked so I can't really afford to make a bad decision.
Problem is looking around at alternatives I don't yet see anything tempting, baring in mind I don't like whopping screens and not too fussed about multi-core devices. I mean if the Xperia Arc S was slightly smaller and had a front-facing camera I'd probably already be saving up for it.
The Sony (minus the Ericsson) Xperia S is just far far far too big. OK 12MP camera but I bet it still blurs if taking a moving shot. Plus is it me, or have the designers copped out? A formless, plain rectangle of a phone like SGS2. Doesn't look comfortable at all to hold, and doesn't hold a candle to the Desire S in terms of looks.
Only thing I'm certain of is I wont be selling my DS. I'll keep it around so I can stay in this section of XDA and carry on with testing and support.
yeah the desire s overclocks very well indeed.mine will run at 1.5ghz stable. its definatly a much more capable phone than the original desire and as you say there arnt many other phones that match the form you are looking for.
we also have the best section on xda with a huge selection of roms.cant go wrong really.BUY ONE!
Think ill go for the Desire S.
I also buy my phones sim free, usually slightly used ones off ebay. Ive decided to get a Desire S, if i newer/better HTC comes out, i can always put the Desire S back on ebay.
