upgrade to 4.3 or 4.2.2 without root? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

hey, so i don't have this phone, but my kid brother wants to upgrade to either 4.2.2 or 4.3 but his mom will not let him root the phone....
is there any way I can do that with this phone?

that's what i am telling him to do! but he's 15...and not used to messing with phones...

Then do what I did for my brother: set him up with all the tools and instructions he needs to revert to stock if things go bad.

Root the phone for him. Technically, he didn't root his phone... you did.
His mom didn't say you couldn't root it.
There's not a way to get 4.2.2 or 4.3 without root.

[PSA] There's an OTA coming and it COULD be bad for us

It seems AT&T is pushing out an OTA version 2.20 that is rumored to close all the loopholes we've used to unlock and root the One X.
If you have NOT rooted and unlocked your bootloader and you want to do so don't accept the update.
Wait until someone has gotten a hold of this version and picked it apart before installing it.
Keep Calm and Carry On.

Even if you are rooted and unlocked BL, don't accept the OTA, unless you are brave and feel like being the guinea pig (I guess somebody has to be). The install may not work, or it may wipe out root, and the existing root methods may have been plugged up. OTA Rootkeeper might work. It did for the last OTA, but there is no guarantee that it will work this time. Somebody will probably post this as a recovery flashable zip in pre-rooted form. So be patient, unless you feel like experimenting, and living with the consequences.
Thanks for the public service announcement, as I'm sure people will start asking whether its safe to install the OTA.
I figured people who rooted would know this but thank you for adding it.

Or how many people unroot just so they can get an OTA that will provide very little added performance if any. People are sooooo quick to accept OTAs when they have no clue what they are for. I can understand wanting to accept an OTA for a major OS update like ICS to JB (ok that was a lie, I still have no clue why people would rather accept an OTA than just flash a rooted ROM) but to give up root for a simple MR is just asinine.

If I'm not mistaken, the exploit uses the AT&T update server to trick the phone into download mode, so I don't think this could work.

Looks like a Verizon S3 ota update is imminent

Nothing too earth shattering if you read the official statement from Verizon, but may have a fix for those with SIM troubles.

right, the safest way to update is to restore back to stock, stock kernel, and DEFINITELY re-lock your bootloader if you have it unlocked.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Not while rooted....Can brick your phone I heard.
Do not update if u are rooted.
Well if you can't update while rooted, what are you supposed to do if it auto updates? I was just sitting in bed and noticed that my notification went off on my phone and not on my tablet (meaning not email). I checked the phone and if I hadn't noticed it would have auto updated and I am rooted on stock. It said the update would start in 3 minutes after I heard the notification. I deferred until tomorrow and have my phone how I want it, so I really don't want to go back to stock. I suppose I could make a nandroid.
It really scares me though that Verizon almost pushed an update that could have potentially bricked my phone. I don't think that is right, quite honestly.

No root yet. I have been following many people attempting to root the 3.18 hox. Right now if you and I or others have the 3.18 jb hox att were screwed. Unless some awesome coder comes to the rescue and can get a bootloader unlock for it. Which by the way is really difficult apparently cause AT&T blocked it from HTC Dev.

I can't say for sure that it will never come but It IS locked down pretty hard, so it's possible that it won't be bootloader unlockable. If you're impatient you can always get it JTAGGED for about 50-100$

If I see more people supporting it, I'll do it, and pay the extra $10 for the rom/root option, and just request whatever the best rom is that is same as stock but with zero bloat and some safe optimizations.

unrooting from MF3

I rooted my S4 after it was hit with the MF3 update with the new root method posted last month. I have read that it cannot be unrooted. having said that, I wanted to unroot. This is how I approached it.
I went to a best buy store where they had a Samsung kiosk. On the counter, I saw a laptop which had a program for re-flashing to factory firmware. The guy kindly re-flashed my phone with the MF3. At first it said it was already installed but it gave the option of continuing. After the re-flash, I tried the su apps and the did not work anymore. So, whether it totally worked or not, i don't know. but that's my story hope it helps you.

[Q] Help with root on 4.4 with newest kernel

hello I'm not sure if there's any method it yet but I can't get any response on the Android forums so I've come here since I normally get good responses here. Anyways, I have the Verizon S3 under Verizon prepaid. It came pre-installed with 4.4 and a kernel of July 22, 2014. I had a phone before this one that was the same but it ran 4.3. I used towel root and it worked flawlessly. Now that I had returned the phone and got a new one due to one of my goofs. It came with 4.4 as I mentioned and the newer kernel. I tried towel root and it says it's not supported. I tried messing with the mod strings to no avail. So I have read it's from the newer kernel they put on the S3 that patched up the towel root exploit. So my question is, is there any other way at all that can root my device? It drives me crazy not having root. It's one of my habits in tinkering with things but can't do no tinkering on a non rooted device. So any help is appreciated.

I used the kingroot app. Just one click and got root. Not sure if kingroot and kingoroot are the same but i just used the king root to get root. I tried kingoroot and it fails. Any ways best of luck to everyone.
