You are mistaking it with Titanium backup, which saves apps & setting
Nandroid is the core backup
Damn! That sux. I thought it did a full backup. I hate having to start from scratch.

I've got back to some semblance of where I was before. However I want to do a Titanium Backup. If I do a backup of user apps only what about any custom settings like all my Circle Launcher icons and apps assigned to the icons? Or do I need to do system data as well?
A nandroid restore should but you back exactly to the point of when you did a backup. That's how it has always work for me on my Nexus One and my TF.
Not sure what happened in your case.
I did a restore and all my user apps and settings for things like Circle Launcher were gone. Likewise for some user settings like email and the market. It was almost like a fresh install.
Nandroid backup is supposed to save EVERYTHING. It's like time traveling, so yeah something messed up on your part when it was supposed to back up the app.
Did you do a custom backup (advanced?) or restore. You could say what you want to restore specifically but that is for more advanced people.
I just chose default backup options. On the first boot it would not boot and got stuck at the eeepad screen. I did a cache and dalvik wipe and then it booted. But to a near fresh install. No idea what is going on with that.

What are you using to backup?
You could try just flashing the data partition again. This is where all your user installed apps and settings are, which seems to be exactly what you are missing.
I might try restoring the data only after I do another backup in CWM and Titanium. There are a few files I would like to recover if possible.
I (finally) flashed v2.0 touchmiuiwiz, someone suggested that since nandroid restores cause fc's, that i should flash the rom, reboot, let it load, then go back into cwm and restore data.
i did that, and the music player/camera/gallery/etc still dont work. i guess i'm being forced into titanium backup. question is - does it work if i make a backup ON THIS ROM then restore? or do i have to flash a different rom that doesn't fc said apps, THEN backup, then flash v2.0 and restore?
also, how does tit backup work? after flashing, where do i go to restore data? thanks bros.

when you make a backup and restore you have to wipe data/factory ereset and it will work from any rom!
titanium backup makes a backup file of all your apps on the sd card and you can backup whenever you want.
so after the data wipe, i re-download titanium backup and restore from there?
Yeah, pretty much. TB Pro you don't have to confirm each app install when restoring. It was expensive but since I flash often it really speeds up the recovery process.
You can back up settings as well as apps. But I would only restore settings if on the same rom, no matter the version, unless significant. But all else, apps you can restore from any rom no problem. However, if you get a FC in an app (sometimes I'd get it for Gmail) you can just wipe the data for that app. It usually resolves the problem.

I have a question about Titanium Backup. I run backups for all my apps (without data) and when I run a factory reset I have to reinstall everything. I understand this because that erases everything including Titanium Backup from my phone. My question is am I doing something wrong and is there a way to recover your apps with Titanium Backup after a Restore or Reset of your phone? Because once I reinstall TB after a reset none of my backups are there obv. But I have to go and re download everything from the market which is a pain in my behind Frankly. So in closing either TB should have some sort of cloud storage for there users where their apps are being backed up to OR they have something like this already and I am blind. I have looked several places but everywhere I go and it says this is possible they are just showing restoring apps with TB after a new rom is flashed...Not completely reset.

I had the same question when I first started using TB. yes you do lose it when you factory reset, but go into the market and redownload it and the pro key if you have paid for it. and you can batch restore your apps an Data. I do it alot cause I'm always testing ROMS. Btw get the full version it has some nice features like batch install without having to click install for every app. makes restoring a breeze

The backups are stored on your SD card. As long as you aren't wiping that, they should still be there in the Titanium Backup folder.
TB does have Dropbox sync, at least in the pro version. Don't know why a factory rest would delete your backups though, does it also delete photos, etc?
Well all backups from TB are on the sd hence u need not worry !
Also just install TB from market and u will notice all of ur backups are ready to be restored !
consider shifting the TB app to the System intead of Data hence it can survive a factory reset !!

unfortunately I had to revert back to one of my backups I made as a custom kernel was causing problems. So, I tried to restore a Nandroid backup I made, but that didn't restore my apps and had to go through the standard Google setup (like a had a brand new phone).
I tried again wiping wipe cache, Dalvik cache etc. before restore, but still no restore even though I didn't encounter any problems restoring. I checked the nandroid directory and the files it backed up were these (total size approx. 2 GB)

Highlighted above in red would be the files that have your apps etc.
Run a restore again, and ONLY restore data, see if that helps out.
It should have restored everything unless you just restored boot or system.
btw, since you were just restoring because of a custom kernel, you didnt have to restore anything. all you had to do is flash the stock kernel(or any other kernel) witbout wiping anything, or just reflash your rom without wiping anything. you wouldnt have lost a thing nor have this headache. but, you chose to do it the wrong way.

Flashing the stock kernel did work, but after flashing the OTA and rooting caused problems. So I had no choice : (

Nope, that didn't work either :crying: The files you highlighted are big files, which means it did back something up.

Those are your data files. It looks like it backed it up fine.
From all accounts, it should be restoring your ROM 100% as you left it. I really don't get why it wouldn't be doing it with the apps.

Yeah, I even activated the MD5 verification in TWRP and I get no errors during the restoring process...I could try an older nandroid backup to see if that makes any difference.
I'm glad I don't just rely on nandroid backups (even though I never restored one).

I always do mybackup root to save my apps / data as well as nandroid.
Yeah try restoring an older one.
Also try reflashing TWRP

Reflashed TWRP and tried again. Same issue. Although the older nandroid took forever and after 45 min. I just shut off the phone as it was going nowhere (status didn't move for that period).
All this makes no sense whatsoever...

Now it's making some sense a nandroid isn't necessarily the same depending on how it's created. For instance a nandroid created on cwm is not compatible with twrp and visa versa
As a plan B, you could try Titanium Backup which is capable of extracting apps & app data from nandroid backups. I think the feature requires TB Pro. Takes a while for it to unpack and parse everything, but it could be your best shot at getting a reasonably good restoration.

What I didn't know is the nandroid backups I did were compressed. So I decompressed these, but after trying to restore these in TWRP no luck. I can however open and browse these in the nandroid backup manager or TI backup. I'm currently trying to restore the nandroid apps via nandroid backup manager. I'll let you guys know how that turns out.
I'm not sure what the difference between the TI app backup I have is and the current nandroid app+app data restore option would be. Isn't this essential the same thing the TI restore does with the apps?
And for the future what nandroid backup works reliably and would you recommend? I pretty paranoid about making backups, but I seem to have lost quite some confidence in nandroid backup, as it has failed me This has been a royal PITA....

I have always used a custom recovery for backups and have never had a problem. I use twrp, but that's just my preference. Cwm is good too

If you didn't already have a Titanium backup, extracting from the nandroid is a good last resort to have.
The main difference between extracting with Titanium and a full nandroid restore - the latter is very sensitive to small differences in backup format, and can only be restored all at once. In general you shouldn't expect to successfully restore a nandroid in recovery if you created it using a different recovery or an app. If you create with TWRP, it should restore properly with TWRP.

I always use Titanium Backup before I flash or backup anything. Then I restore my apps with no problems. It is a bit unusual for your apps not to be in your nandroid backup since it's basically like taking a picture of your phone and storing everything on it. I've never had this problem with TWRP. Hopefully you can figure it out...

Any way to do this? There were a lot of Nand apps in the past but they've all mysteriously vanished. Titanium backup still has a restore from nand/twrp backup option, but it's pro only.

It wasn't necessarily backup, but just recovery. I'm recovering some apps and their data from a bootlooping TWRP backup. I know it is possible to an extent because I was manually able to move my Google Authenticator data to a fresh install, just wanted to do it with the rest of my apps.
