[Q] Flashed image is larger than partition size help! - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When to get the play store working on my new zoom I had it rooted running 4.2.2, but messed up and totally wiped the device
I downloaded both these images (I don't know what model my XOOM is is there a way to tell if the OS does not boot up?) from motorola-xoom-development/19436-info-stock-images-other-links.
"MZ600 - XOOM with Wi-Fi + Verizon 3G
Build HRI39 for US Retail 64f26579c2ed751e0a433ceaafbfe4c1
Build HRI66 for US Retail 18d6f775b210a0741e6187ff535d47a3"
I can run fastboot and run OEM unlock, and then I can run flash recovery on the boot.img and the recovery.img (recovery works and I can get in it)
but when I run system.img I get "Flashed image is larger than partition size"
I get that error running it on both system.img files from both the 2 different builds
Anything I'm doing wrong? Is there another system.img file I should try? I can get into recovery is there a better method of getting the OS back on the device?
Thank you very much for any help / advice, this post comes after a lot of googling and bad links

**UPDATE**
I was using the wrong command for flashing the system file
correct is fastboot flash system *whatever your file name is*.img

[Q] LGL45C how to flash custom rom

Hello. i need quite a bit of help here. i have a android phone that has been bricked ( but is still able to boot into fastboot) and i have downloaded cyanogenmod. however, i do not quite understand how to flash it, and have not been able to find any answers.
heres what i have tried, so maybe you can point me down the right direction on what i should be doing:
tried flashing the whole zip file of cyanogenmod 7 by using the command :
fastboot update *pathtomycyanogenmod*.zip, however, this returned errors about not having productinfo.txt or androidinfo.txt.
so, the next thing i thought i could try is using the command "fastboot flash system * name of image file for this partition*.img , but there are no .img files for any of the partitions.
the guide i found to doing the above step^ said this:
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
however, with cyanogenmod there are nmone of these except for boot.img. so, where do i get these images at, and are there any roms that support this?
also, could you give me tips on alternative ways of flashing if this is not going to be easy ( fastboot)? i use ubuntu 12.04 as my desktop os, so i cant use any windows utilitys, but i can still use fastboot and have all of the android developer stuff ready to go should we need to use that.
You can flash with a custom recovery for this phone. One is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671430. Can I ask where you got cyanogenmod for this phone? Cyanogenmod works with a different optimus net (it has a model number like p6xxx or something) not the lgl45c.

US Xoom 604 ROM issues

Hi all, I will start with saying I have searched the forums pretty extensively and did not find anything similar, so I am asking with a new thread. If it is here, I am sorry..my head hurts and this is really getting to me.
What I am trying to do is change a US 604 to either a Canadian 604 or a Brazilian 604, the person wants PT BR as default system.
OK, I unlocked and rooted the 604, that is all OK. My issue is when I try to flash either the Build H.6.2-21 for Canada or Build H.6.2-21 for Brazil (both directly from motodev), all EOS Recovery CWM R6 gives me is starting then aborts, no message why is given and no logs are present. I did manage to get the EOS wingray dated 6/19 to flash, added googleapps 10.5, rebooted then it just sat at the animated EOS logo for 10 minutes, I hard booted and restored from backup. Restored fine. Back to stock which is: Xoom 4.0.4 Kernel 2.6.39.4-g42a0480 Build # IMM76
Someone please help, I have been killing myself researching this for over a week and while having made progress, the job is not complete and I have hit a wall.
All the ROMS I have downloaded MD5 check OK.
This is my first serious adventure with Android, I have rooted other Android devices but have never messed with ROMs.
Help..please? :|
thank you for the time.
I suggest that you install the earlier recovery R4c v3.2.0.0 from the Development Section. The new EOS recovery that you are using has some issues. Ok, are you flashing zipfiles? I thought that the stock images from motodev were .img files. You use adb to flash those. Please excuse me if I have misunderstood.
The images you download from motodev may come in the form of a zip. However that is not a zip that can be flashed in recovery. On a computer, you should extract the contents of the zip you downloaded off of motodev. When you look at the extracted contents (it may be in its own folder), you should come across some .img images. In a terminal/command line, you should use the fastboot commands to flash those images on your xoom.
As the Motodev website says, you should execute the following commands in this order.
FROM MOTODEV WEBSITE said:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
Note: If no userdata.img file is present in your download, please issue the command:
fastboot erase userdata
Click to collapse
If you want to keep the bootloader unlocked, you should probably leave out "fastboot oem lock" because that command will lock the xoom's bootloader.
Thank you guys for replying!
okantomi, I was unaware of the issues with the latest recovery, thank you. I will grab the version you suggested. They are img files inside a zip from motodev, perhaps I cannot do it the way I am trying to and need to follow yosterwp's advice?
I assume I extract the imgs into where adb is correct?
Again, thank you so much guys, I am learning this as I go and at times is confusing and I get a little lost.
Thank you!! I will keep you posted with results
Solved!!
SUCCESS!! Thank you so much you two, I cannot believe it was that simple and I did not see it. You saved me guys!! Awesome.

[Q] xt925 actually stuck in AP Fastboot mode

I have been rooting for about a year now, albeit largely with Samsung devices via Odin and CWM Recovery. I now have a Verizon Motorola RAZR HD (xt925) and have been unsuccessful with unlocking the bootloader. I decided to use Safestrap with it, and tried to load Eclipse-v5.0-build2-xt926, reportedly compatible with my XT925... now i am stuck with this screen:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been looking to XDA for my answers over the last year. Help would be appreciated. Twenty-five dollars worth of appreciation.
(Yes, I have resorted to bribes....)
Easy fix,
download what ever version of the system software you had on it previously.
Flash it in fast boot mode.
?????
Profit.
Edit: also Verizon RAZRs are xt926 not xt925

Phone identified itself as 925... either way, i am unsure where i can find stock software for it and seem to be unable to flash anything from fastboot, because as it turns out, i am code-retarded. definitely profit when this is solved. I can "cd" through dos and get to where fastboot commands are entered and I have even tried to "fastboot recovery recovery.img" but for the life of me, i must be typing the string incorrectly somehow. But I am excellent at following clear-cut directions. i will try to find a stock image...for motorola, it is a .sbf file, right? If i seem stupid, i apologize, i'm not. just not up on all the nomenclature native to adb and fastboot (or linux). Thanks for helping me though.....i need it.
Ok,
First thing I want you to do is look on the back of the phone, It will have the model on the lower half of it.
Second thing is to find the official software.
For XT96:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/list.php
For xt925
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish_u/list.php
Flash the ROM file using RSD Lite.
If it dosnt work:
Make sure you have the moto drivers installed.
open up the .xml file in the rom and remove the "getvar" lines.
Still trying
Failed at 16/27 flash system system.img
What version did you try?
VZW_XT926_4.1.2_9.8.1Q_62_VQW_MR-4_VQW_CFC.xml
having a hard time finding other .xml files to use... any non-stock .xml available? really want to get into an AOKP/CM/PAC/Liquidsmooth/Carbon/Paranoid.....whatever is 4.2.2
No, only official roms are packaged like that.
You need to have RSDlite at least Version 6 or higher. Also, edit the xml file as stated here.
If your phone is up & running again you can consider going to another rom either with safestrap or by unlocking your BL, installing a recovery and flashing any ROM you like. As stated above you can only flash Stock FW using RSDLite. All other roms can only be applied with either safestrap or CWM Recovery (or similiar).

[SOLVED] Issues Booting on a XT925 - Unlocked device

Hi everyone,
I end up here after loads of searchs and manipulations unsuccessful...
Well here is my problem :
Edit : The problem much advanced, but is still not resolved, see 5th post for more information of current status
Final Edit : Problem solved, see the 5th post.
I have a Motorola Razr HD XT925 which is Unlocked.
I tryed flashing a custom rom on it, and failed hard.
Before failing that hard, I had some backups which were working perfectly, those, don't work anymore ...
So here is what I can access :
Fastboot (works perfectly, I can access it from my PC also without any issues)
Recovery (works "perfectly", the only thing is I cant restore any backups and I can't flash any ROM well yet, tryed Factory Reset also, does not work)
Normal boot just remains on "Warning bootloader unlocked"
By the way, by doing all that my backups have gone from my phone, so I only have em on my computer which is a bit hard when you want to try a restore (on a backup that was working perfectly before).
Another thing I noticed, when trying to Factory reset for example, It says "Unable to mount '/data'" which is a bit hard if you want to write data ^^
If anyone has an idea, feel free to make a comment, any idea is accepted since I can't use my phone at all...
Feel free to ask any question if you need more information or if you did not understand something.
Here some more infos I got while using DroidHD Utility Deluxe :
The command "fastboot flash aboot file.mbn" leads to a "error: cannot load 'folder/file.mbn'"
I managed to get a functional Driod Razr XT925 OS working by using the tool I mentioned before : DriodHD Utility Deluxe
Everything works well except those :
I can't read any backups made with TWRP before that (I mean the backups which were functionnal but that I couldnt manage to get back on).
I can't make my SIM work anymore, it says, unknown sim, and no network available when I'm trying to use my phone with GSM functions.
Managed to get my backups work again. The folder was under another name, which is why TWPR couldnt find it.
One last problem, my /efs partition has left me You already see the problem ? No IMEI around !
So I managed to find my IMEI number again and trying to use that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960918 to write it back on my phone.
But...cause there's a but, I cant seem to use my USB drivers when I boot up in "BP Tools".
So impossible to access the phone, and impossible to write that "recovered" IMEI...
Anyone has a solution roaming around ?
Well at least I can feel like not being a total dumb ^^ Managed to install manually the driver for QC Diag Port, by selecting "Motorola" > "Motorola QC Diag Port" manually.
So, the BP tools mode can now be accessed from my computer, but here is another problem, I can communicate with the phone and even write my IMEI, but not on the phone Sounds like the entry 555 (which was totally absent) is in read-only mode :/
Here is the error given by RF NV Manager :
NvManager::writeToPhone(comPort, nvItems, throwException) -Unable to write 'NV_UE_IMEI_I' to the phone. (Parameter is write-protected and thus read only)
A clue ? Anyone ? Before I find it alone again, I think I'll soon be bald considering how I tear my hair since some hours...
Edit :
Ok so I tryed the QPST thing on a 32bits XP computer. Same problem.
I also tryed flashing my ROM into the stock one with RSD Lite, which is called like that :
9.8.2Q-8-XT925_VQU-22_USERSIGNED_S7_UCAVANQU02NA02F.0R_LSAVNQJBRTFR_P007_A004_CFC
Found it here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032284
Under that name :
Branding: Retail France/Retail Central Europe
Version: 9.8.2Q-8-XT925_VQU-22 FULL
Android Version: 4.1.2
Bootloader Version: N/A
Requires RSD Lite 6.0
Click to collapse
And got an error (even after removing the getvar command) which is :
Failed flashing process. 2/22 flash partition "partition_signed"->Phone returned FAIL
Click to collapse
Here is what the fastboot screen says :
Fastboot reason: Flash Failure
usb connected
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
preflash validation failed for GPT
Click to collapse
Final Edit (#Request lock) :
Ok so I finally got out of trouble.
Flashed to the stock rom with that rom : 9.8.2Q-8-XT925_VQU-22_USERSIGNED_S7_UCAVANQU02NA02F.0R_LSAVNQJBRTFR_P 007_A004_CFC
Found it here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2032284
And applyed that homemade script (which gets rid of the cache memory problem before system flash) :
Code:
@echo off
fastboot flash sbl1 sbl1_signed
fastboot flash sbl2 sbl2_signed
fastboot flash sbl3 sbl3_signed
fastboot flash rpm rpm_signed
fastboot flash tz tz_signed
fastboot flash aboot aboot_signed
fastboot reboot-bootloader
echo. When the screen bcomes back on, press any key to continue!
pause
fastboot flash partition partition_signed
fastboot flash sbl1 sbl1_signed
fastboot flash sbl2 sbl2_signed
fastboot flash sbl3 sbl3_signed
fastboot flash rpm rpm_signed
fastboot flash tz tz_signed
fastboot flash aboot aboot_signed
fastboot flash boot boot_signed
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash system system_signed
fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed
fastboot flash modem modem_signed
fastboot flash devtree devtree_signed
fastboot flash logo logo
fastboot flash cdrom cdrom_signed
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg_signed
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase tombstones
echo. Press a key to reboot the phone
pause
fastboot reboot
Then when I came back on my phone, my IMEI was back itself like a big one
4 days of SMS came back at that time, I'm saved

You should be able to find your stock rom here (for JellyBean 4.1.2) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032284
And here (for Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943879
Extract your stock rom into a folder then copy these files into this folder :
"fastboot.exe", "AdbWinApi.dll" and "AdbWinUsbApi.dll"
And about the script, write it into a file called "flash_fastboot_hybris.bat" using your favorite text editor (notepad or notepad++ for example).
Then copy this file into the stock rom folder.
Then boot up your smartphone into fastboot mode, plug it to your computer and execute "flash_fastboot_hybris.bat".
Follow the script insctructions, and your smartphone should be back to its stock recovery.
Tell me if you need some files or more information.

For my own story, when I had successfully flash with droidHD utility, I flashed back using my own script and it worked.
If it doesn't then your problem is probably different from mine (your IMEI is probably corrupted), you could try using QPST and modify entry #550 with your own IMEI.
fixed

Unlock Bootloader
first you need to install Motorola Drivers = https://support.motorola.com/us/en/solution/MS88481
- ATTENTION - use the most up-to-date ADB Drivers otherwise will brick if older version is used; instead of downloading ADB elsewhere which is often old version, get it directly from GOOGLE, here = https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
now you can proceed to unlock bootloader = https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
TWRP
get the official TWRP here = https://dl.twrp.me/beckham/
- ATTENTION - if you just want root access, then there's no need to install TWRP, just boot from the .img once using the latest version
use TWRP to make a backup of EFS partition before installing anything, store the backup files outside of the device
if you want custom ROMs or GSI, then you will need to install TWRP installer .zip into the recovery partition. To install the .zip, boot using a .img for example the 3.3.1-0, then use it to install the latest .zip version in the recovery partition. Unfortunately the only official installable version of TWRP that exists is bugged, and the TWRP developers haven't fixed it yet, go talk to them ask for some love, be respectful = https://github.com/TeamWin/android_device_motorola_beckham/issues
Magisk
install Magisk using the new&correct method AKA "Boot Image Patching Method" to be able to install OTA later = https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#boot-image-patching
when OTA arrives, you may manually install it whilst retaining Magisk by carefully following these instructions = https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html#ota-installation
- ATTENTION - you won't be able to install stock OTAs if you use older method or if system partition is modified, be really careful to not alter the hash of the partitions

RETUS is short for Retail + US.
The difference between RETUS and RETAIL is, I imagine, cannot confirm, the same RETAIL firmware with some US regional modifications such as bloatware or CSC thing
you can check which model is yours in SETTINGS > SYSTEM > ABOUT PHONE > SOFTWARE CHANNEL. Or in the bootloader by running the command
Code:
fastboot getvar product
you can find the entire list of product codes here = https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/readme-en.html#listone

I believe that's the internal version of the software. If the number changes that emphasizes there has been software changes and/or tweaks in the system and/or firmware. If the number doesn't change, then it's just a regular security patch with no further modifications in system and/or firmware.
Thanks for that info. Yeah, I know mine has the retus software channel. I just couldn't find or figure out if Retail was actually one word or if it was a combo of ret+ail. That version has a LOT of software posted.
I flashed retail on an EU model. And after it the software channel say Reteu just like the original. Also the model number is as it should be. In my opinion you can flash retail firmware on us and EU models.
confirmed that this firmware is working on XT1929-4
these are the steps I took:
downloads and setup
install moto drivers (in windows, not needed for linux)
install android tools (adb and fastboot)
downloaded official TWRP
downlaoded and extracted the firmware
backup of partitions (including efs)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp_recovery.img
backed up lots of partitions
rebooted system
copied the TWRP backup files to my pc for safe keeping
set the fastboot slot (i did this because many of teh fastboot commands below were failing)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot --set-active=a
rebooted back into bootloader
installed the firmware
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash bluetooth BTFM.bin
fastboot flash dsp dspso.bin

installed magisk the new good way
did the initial device setup
installed magisk manager
copied the boot.img from the extracted firmware above to the phone.
followed these steps for boot img patching and install of magisk https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#boot-image-patching
sirkuttin,
Thanks for the detail how to. That worked perfectly for me, and my moto z3 play, same model as yours. I could not get the ota or even lenovo smart assistant to work on my phone. It basically had it locked up, stuck on the boot logo. I'm assuming its the old way of install magisk that caused that. This got me on the latest firmware release, and then installed magisk the new way. Lenovo smart assistant was useful in downloading the firmware.
Thanks.
Hi I tried the new magisk install way. I'm on XT1929-4_BECKHAM_RETUS_9.0_PPW29.183-29-1, copy boot.img and patched it to magisk_patched.img. Then after fastboot flash boot /path/to/magisk_patched.img and a reboot, i'm not stuck on the motorola powered by android screen. Verity mode is set to disabled.
I tried holding down the power button to simulate a battery pull but no luck, the screen just stays on. Can anybody give me any advise? I think now I have to just wait till the device is out of juice. Never experience this before.

So the battery pull is "Power + Vol Down". I was able to flash the PPW29.183-29-1 firmware and get it going again. I noticed it tried to upgrade me to PPW29.183-29-1-2 so I must have been on newer firmware. I flashed the magisk_patched and am rooted now.
It seems there is TWRP 3.3.1-1 with an Installer. Does it mean it can be flashed to recovery partition? Tried booting it, but got stuck on TWRP logo (3.3.1-0 boots fine).

I haven't tested it myself, though you're correct, the installer .zip can be installed on recovery partition. To install the .zip, boot using a .img for example the 3.3.1-0, then use it to install the .zip in the recovery partition.
PS only do it if you have a reason to, I'm not sure if the firmware OTA checks the hashing of the recovery partition so altering it could potentially prevent you from installing OTAs of the official ROM.

It, unfortunately, does... However I csnnot update (continous update unsuccesful) :f Have to check if Xposed module is not a reason.
And You probably could use Installer to flash stock recovery? If not TWTP itself however I've never checked if one for Play has access to recovery partiotion to flash images. It should gave if it can be done using the installer...

Me too and it drove me nuts, I did patch the /boot partition with the original file, but the OTA app still failed to install, even after reboot. And there's no useful data in the logcat to debug the app. So I gave up and had to use Titanium to freeze the OTA app otherwise it would keep trying to download and install infinitely.

It's probably not because I don't use it and the OTA method didn't work me either

Just checked the inside of the installer zip file and it won't work. Still once every 3 months it wouldn't be a problem to connect device to PC and flash recovery.img with fastboot.
Is there a list with a commands and order how to flash Z3 Play images of official firmware? I want July patches and have some problems, so clean reflash is what I need.
Additional question is if I have to use "-u" when flashing second and other system images? Remember I had to do it with my X Play coz of unlocked bootloader and here I have one in the same state as well. If yes than could someone tell me where to put it, coz I'm not sure...

Hi, I'm trying to unlock my Moto Z3 Play bootloader, but I don't get the code on CMD, but only a few numbers ... The version of my device is PPW29.131-27-1-11, channel RETBR software.
Someone went through this, can you tell how to reverse this situation?
I couldn't get the bootloader unlocked for xt1929-4. I tried different computers, Linux and win. Have latest adb and fastboot. When fastboot OEM get_unlock_data is given, I says counttas slot not found etc., can someone help?
It may seem obvious, but you
checked OEM unlocking and USB Debugging?
