I have a pc with windows 8.1 on it but since I can't get the fastboot drivers to work(adb works though) I can't run the ruu on it. Beside that computer I have a mac and a linux pc. I understand you can extract the Rom.zip from the ruu and flash it through fastboot on a linux computer but will that update the hboot and firmware? I want to upgrade it so I can flash the newer roms out there. Thanks!

If adb works, fastboot should work. You are in fastboot mode on the phone when you try aren't you?

Yes, if you just couldn't get the fastboot to work, you could flash rom fastboot in linux. First, you need to open RUU.exe, and continue till see the image version. i.e from image: 3.18.xxx.7 to ....... Then, in windows 8 open task manager, and find ROM Update U....(in win7 is ARUWizard.) locate the file. you will find in the folder there is rom_01.zip and rom_02.zip. rom_01.zip is hboot only. you could flash that first. then flash rom_02.zip(you could skip it of cause) [SOME of the older RUU only have rom.zip]
keep in mind, is "not a safe" method to do so.
Best of Luck and Sucessful get RUU.
Use a windows VM. You'll need to remember to force the USB reconnection since during the ruu the phone reboots several times and if you don't reconnect it you risk bricking.

Yes. When I boot into fastboot mode the device comes up as malfunctioning and it says something about the device enumeration failing. When I type in fastboot devices no devices come up. Have installed HTC sync. Will that install HTC drivers on windows 8.1? Also how dangerous is it to flash rom_1.zip? Could it possibly brick my device?

Don't bother flashing that. the RUU is the only way to update properly, HBoot/firmwares and all.
What happens when you try to RUU on windows 8?
Did you try running the RUU while the phone is in fastboot mode?
When I am in the android OS the ruu brings up my device info but thinking that it will require fastboot to work I didn't try. When I boot into fastboot mode it gives the error 170. So I go to cmd and type in fastboot devices and it returns nothing just a blank list. A windows also pops up saying the device is malfunctioning and something about the device enumeration failing.

My windows 8.1 64-bit does that too. I think I ended up using a different PC to RUU. I can't remember if I had fastboot working on 8 or not before I upgraded. I've tried different ports and cables. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers over and over.

Just use a windows 7 or xp virtual machine -_- it will take time to install and you'll need to force reconnect the USB connection but it will work just fine.

To install cm you must run the proper 3.18 ruu exe program. It isn't the ROM component that's important, it's all the other parts that are required for aosp ROMs.

You have to download the android SDK to your pc and install platform tools or contains all the stuff you need to use adb to cmd. U will have to command from your platform tools folder to do this.

The HTC unlock page should walk you through setting up adb. It may seem like gibberish if you're not familiar with the windows command line. You need to have the correct files in a folder, and then open a cmd prompt in that folder. Just start over and follow every step to the letter.
Get to know "adb devices". If it doesn't list a random looking number, adb isn't detecting your phone, and nothing will work beyond that step.
can't unlock the bootloader
Hi there,
I have trouble unlocking the bootloader on my One S. I've been trying since Saturday and I'm stuck.
I've tried the HTCDev moethod but got stuck at "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" after this it just stays at "sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...".
Sometimes it stops saying "too many links", but mostly it just stays like this.
I tried 5-7 Unlock_code.bin files which I got from HTCDev, but none was working.
Is it normal that the "Identifier token" differs every time I "get" it?
Yesterday I tried out the All-In-One-Kit by Hansoon2000, got a new token, sent it to HTC and got another Unlock_code.bin.
Then I ran the Unlock bootloader procedure, the phone rebooted via adb to the bootloader, switched to fastboot and got stuck at the same position as mentioned above.
Just now I tried deinstalling HTCSync (read that it could help in an other forum), rebooted my PC and used the All-In-One toolkit again.
This time I got something new:
After "sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)..." it said "INFOstart check_usb: usb_ep0: type=128 request=6" but after this nothing again...
Trying it now, I don't get that message anymore. It's just like "gone".
Also tried:
different usb cables
different usb ports
Here is what I get from the cmd prompt:
c:\Android>adb devices
c:\Android>adb devices
List of devices attached
SH241W403657 device
c:\Android>adb kill-server
c:\Android>adb reboot bootloader
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
c:\Android>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

I hope I forgot nothing, if so please tell me
Thanks

edit: just tried it on my laptop via the All-In-One toolkit and it worked fine. problem solved, though i don't know why :S.
The unlock token was probably not in same folder as fastboot.exe OR you weren't in the right directory in cmd prompt. Either way... glad it worked

suggestion to re lock his hox was mentioned but his reply didn't say if he locked it, just said he tried to run the ruu. Bet it still needs locking! Also OP do you have super cid? If so he doesnt need 1.85 right? He can use the 1.73. I would still probably use the 1.85 like rpopo recommended though. Also if you have done everything correct (re locked and 1.85 if not super cid) the USB drivers can make a difference. I was super cid and locked and ruu kept failing. uninstalled my HTC drivers and ran the HTC sync program and used those drivers...Worked first time after that! Just have to remember to not actually have HTC sync running!
Wats a super cid..? Srry I'm new to rooting

If you flashed a good ROM and your stuck in hboot, use fastboot and use the following command 'fastboot oem boot' that will force your phone to boot.
Stay unlocked push recovery in fastboot again
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Start the RUU. Finish the install, then back into hboot, select recovery
Invest in a copy of titanium backup and use between rom flashing hence there isn't a micro sd card slot in the HOX

Is it possible to get the phone back to S-Off when I have no ROM installed. The unrevoked-program is just "waiting for device".
I had my phone S-Off before, but had plans to return it to warranty so went back to S-On but without a ROM installed. So now I cant do anything with my phone, or is there a way to get a working ROM without making it S-OFF?

Hi All,
I am fairly new to all this, I have read countless posts and done everything I can but I am stuck.
I have a HBOOT 2.14 currently with S-ON.
I have installed TWRP in recovery but no custom mods work due to the HBOOT version.
SuperCID is 111111111 and is already set.
I want to be able to S-OFF my device so i can downgrade the HBOOT and use the custom roms.
I ran through the facepalm S-OFF procedure, it all runs correctly, although upon reboot it still says S-ON.
Does anyone know why this would be? Is there something I am missing?
I am doing this some the TWRP recovery mode as that is the only place I can access adb commands currently.
There is no working ROM currently installed, CM 10.1 is installed although it can't be used because the touchscreen doesn't work.
Any information people can provide me to get all this working would be of great help.
Happy to donate/pay someone to help me via teamviewer or whatever.
Thanks,
Tabmowtez

I have tried AOSP and CM Roms and all have had the same issue of the TP not working though.

Just to confirm, it seems all ROMS based off of the 3.17 kernel and higher work with S-ON.
I have the HatkaXL-evita-v4.2.5_Sense5Elements ROM working after I did the following steps:
Place boot.img in sdk platform tools folder
Boot phone into fastboot usb
open your command prompt from the sdk files folder. (shift+right click-select open command window)
type: fastboot erase cache
type: fastboot flash boot boot.img
type: fastboot erase cache (just to be safe)
On phone select bootloader, then recovery.
Once TWRP loads (I'm using 2.4.4.0) go to wipe and select factory reset then wipe system and both caches
Then install the rom and go through setup
once setup is complete, UNCHECK restart now so it leaves the rom and goes back to TWRP.
Click on clear cache/davlik and then click reboot
Settings application keeps on crashing so I am going to try the aokp_evita_jb-mr1_build-4 ROM now after a backup.
I still have issues getting adb to recognise the device once the ROM is booted but that's a separate issue for now...
Are you sure your getting error 92 and not 99 when you flash the zip for s-off cause if your getting 99 you need to fastboot write your cid then reboot and try again

I'm definitely getting the error 92. My CID is already a SuperCID so would I have to do that again?
I have the ViperX ROM running now so I am happy, would still like to S-OFF though so I can try CM etc. after a hboot downgrade.

When I did the s-off to my One XL, the error 92 is normal and I just followed the steps in this thread and it worked fine

That is the same thread I follow, I will try again now that I have a working ROM and see how it goes.

All good, I successfully S-OFF'd my device and downgraded my hboot to 1.09. Hopefully this means I can put any mod on now without flashing from fastboot first and having the touchscreen work!
