Where can I get a copy of the stock phone.apk? I flashed my nexus s 4g to the latest slim bean build and the phone apk is no longer installed.

just remove the icon from your homescreen and put the one from the app drawer in its place, the phone apk is "missing" in android 4.3 because it's location in system has been changed

The icon is not in the app drawer. I found phone.apk in the system/app folder and the permissions are correct but the app doesn't show up anywhere.

is it under hidden apps by any chance if you're using apex or nova? If not did you do a full wipe before installing slimbean?

I didn't do a full wipe before flashing build 8, I'll do a full wipe and reflash.
Did a full wipe and reinstall, all is back to normal.

Hello all,
I did some searching around and couldn't find the answer. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to pull the Phone.apk file from a CM build and use it in my rooted, but otherwise stock NS4G. The reason I want to is because CM's builds have a built-in blacklist app, that I want.
So what did was copy the Phone.apk from the latest nightly (22), and tried to installing it on my phone. It didn't work, and I just got the error 'application not installed'. And simply dropping it in the /system/app folder (overwriting the old phone.apk) didn't work either. I just got a lot FC's whenever I tried to open the call settings.
Is what I'm trying to do even possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Well. Contacts.apk is the one you want. And yes it will work. But you have to be deodexed also.

Didnt work. It still told me that the app was not installed. Is there an official process for this?

Are you deodexed? If so flash this
http://droidfiles.us/downloads/mikeyinid/Transparent_Dialer.zip
Its transparent but its the CM dialer. You can grab the contacts.apk from CM if you want and put it in the .zip instead, I personally have had issues when using the one from cM, not the transparent one though.

Failed again. I tried flashing it from recovery and it just says 'installation aborted'. I am running the deodexed build of Gingerbread, that I got from Pete's site.
I use system app remover you can get it in the market. After you install it you will find a folder called /SystemAppBackup. Drag your cm apks and copy them to this folder. Open system app remover app, click the menu button, and press "restore app" choose your apps and boom. Rom manager doesn't always work for me on this phone even when you set permissions. This has worked for me. Hopefully it will bring you luck

Didnt work. System app remover let me copy the modified apk over but once I did I could no longer open the dialer (app is not installed on your phone error). So instead of messing around this, I'll just wait for CM to go final.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

make sure the app has the right permissions when plopping it in the right folder. Root explorer is good for checking and setting permissions

You don't install this like a regular app. Use root manager and push to system>apps. Make sure to adjust permissions.

yea when I changed a main rom app from system/app I went into titanium backup.1)backup system app just in case. there usually in red. 2)I wrote the name exactly like it says on system file- onto the app i am going to replace that I stored on sd card from computer.3)On Titanium I uninstalled app. 4) Paste sd app in system/app folder. Installed. Opened backup in Titanium again so I don't loose it.( Just so you know I did this with a google search widget in system app. I wanted a transparent search. Hope this helps someone

Here's a new black app that's worth trying out, no grey and looks killer:
Black Google Mobile by bGoog

Look for an app called custom ICS search, it allows you to create a widget go any color you want.

downloading these files, but all I get is a 1 KB file with "404 Page Not Found"
I cannot seem to get the email or weather widget to install. The weather widget will not install like a normal .apk. I tried changing the permissions on both .apk files, pushing them to system/app and booted into recovery and fixed permissions. they refuse to show up with my widgets no matter what I try. Running megatron 1.0.1 (cm9 based).

You don't need to mess with permissions. I have only encountered your problem when trying to install these on a ROM that already has these apps, because of signature mismatch.
Did you install cm9 without full wipe?
What does it say in logs when you try to install weather widget? or do "adb install weather.apk" it should tell you why it's not installing.

Well I managed to get the weather widget from another source, it was signed and installed fine. So that problem is taken care of. As far as the email widget goes, It still does not show up. I moved it via ES File Explorer with root permissions to the system/app folder. Tried with stock permissions, and edited permissions. I installed cm9 megatron 1.0.1 over the stock asus ICS rooted, I did however, perform a full wipe via CWM.
I was also wondering if you would be able to get the stock asus digital clock. all I can seem to find is the CM9 analog one.

I didn't modify the package name for weather widget so it won't install if you have the original Asus weather widget remaining on your system. Same package name but different signatures = no install. This is the only way it won't install. The reason the other one installs is because it has different package name so it doesn't matter if the signature doesn't match the original one.
Somehow your full wipe didn't clear everything. Or you restored stuff ater installing CM9?

Sorry. This just occurred to me. When did you download the attachments?
I found out the attachments had been corrupted for a while. I just uploaded them again.

There are no lib files for the task manager. It just has to be de-odexed after you take it from the stock ROM.
For it to run on a custom ROM, it needs to have the same signature as the other system apps already present on the ROM, which means it needs to be signed with the same platform key.
The task manager and email widget I uploaded are signed with CM9 platform key. So they work with CM9, but not other ROMs that use different platform keys.

Copied both email and task manager widgets and they appeared; using Megatron 101 as well.
Copied taskmanager.apk to /system/app, and it shows up in Widgets. no need to reboot.

My Nexus S is on the stock rom and I wanted to download some Jellybean apps from: http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/574539-resource-apps-jelly-bean-4-1-apks.html and started off with the Calendar app here. Using root explorer, I deleted the Calendar apk that was already there and I was even dumb enough to remove the other Calendar files (one of them was a .odex file and I can't remember the other one). Then I copied the Jellybean Calendar to system/app and set the permissions to r-w-r-r and then I tried to install but I get "Replace app?
This is a system app. All your user data will be saved." before installing, then I tap OK and install but I get "App not installed" every time. Is there a way that I can get any Calendar apk to install successfully?

stock rom? ICS i presume? well, just flash another set of gapps http://goo.im/gapps/ choose the ics one, and you should get your data back since it's synced with Google Calendar.
If you're using ics, unmodified jb gapps cannot be installed, because jb has api level 16, while ics has only level 15, so don't try this
I'm actually running a Jellybean ROM but I tried flashing the ICS gapps which only resulted in FC's and a JB gapps which I found on the internet didn't work either...

...And now it works! I was hoping that I didn't need to do this, but a full wipe worked. Thanks
I just flashed a firmware that came stock with Holo Launcher HD launcher, and I have used this ROM before and successfully killed it and replaced with Trebuchet or TouchWiz. Well, now I killed it in Titanium Backup, and it still shows up when I press home, completely intact. However, It is no longer in the Titanium or Settings menu Apps list, and when I try to install a different launcher it does not ask me which I would like to set as default when I press home. I would just clear the defaults but like I said it doesn't show up in any Apps list on the system or Titanium. So now I am stuck on junk Holo Launcher HD launcher with seemingly no possible alternatives. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The APK is missing. And I only have about 40 APKs so I wouldnt miss it if it was there. Looks like Im going to have to reflash.
