Before I start some troublehosting I want to hear some opinions first if possible.
And I would to add that this is my firt samsung phone(since I managed to drown my sony xperia go witch was supposed to be waterproofff) so things seem different from the way sony does theyr things. much easyer I might say as just a user, but much harder for devs:/
Anyhow, so I got a DOA/DAP act and this time added a little more cash and got this gem. Got it with 4.1.2, got it rooted. Only days after I manage to find out that 4.2.2 update has been releaced for quite sometime. Currently I have no computer and have been using the phone as a replacement. Now I'm kind of Getting interested in updating and wanted to ask some opinions and maybe a comparison of the two.
Android 4.2.2:
Lock Screen Widgets
Transparent Status Bar
New Notification Panel (More toggles)
Lock Screen new effects when touched
Daydream mode (Setting>display)
New keyboard
Minor changes in user interface
New user interface in setting (same as the s4)
Higher score in benchmark
Better battery life
*I didn't install Android 4.2.2 but that's what I know, do tell me if I missed any of them.
If you wanna update 4.2.2 before it's available for your country, you have to download the 4.2.2 firmware from Sammobile and flash it via Odin. Make sure your computer is fully working and it doesn't power off itself in a sudden :silly:
As you mentioned, you rooted your 4.1.2, OTA wouldn't be available, if you want any OTA from your country you have to flash stock firmware (Like I did too). But if you flash other country's 4.2.2 you would lose your warranty as well. So you decide.
I'm waiting for Hong Kong's official update.

Flashing isnt hard, its just that this binary counter is somethig new for me, so I still have just a basic understanding how it works. Tell me: when I wanted to root I went in download mode and the first thing I was given were two options - vol.up as reboot and forget or vol.down and go into the actual download mode. So I press down and I see do not disconnet or unplug ect. And at the botom I saw the triangle. I was just about to flash the needed stuff but it was already there, still is...
Edit;
Also where do I get my countries fw? Although I'm pretty sure mines international. And would the phone status change to official if I reset the counter? Maybe kies then would allow me to get the update?
all u r answers are already given in the s ll plus forums read it carefully.

I'm pretty sure I would have already found some answers since this is almost a dead forum. Maybe I overlooked - yes, but atleast linkig to some answers would be nice.
U can update ur phone via kies if the update is already available for ur country.
If u simply flash the firmware via odin without flashing cwm or something else ur binarycounter wont count higher.
U said u rooted ur phone so i guess that u flashed cwm and then superuser.zip in cwm. If u did that ur counter already counted up to 1 so it is not nessesary wheather u flash a prerouted firmware or do it urself after flashing the normal one.
It is up to u.
Btw. It is possible to reset the counter.

Yes I know when the counter counts and that I can reset it somehow as I was talking about before. The question is: would kies upgrade me if I have the counter rolling and if not where can I just get the firmware to go stock again.
Didnt tested it. But if u dont have the german Firmware u wont get an update via kies

"almost a dead forum" - so it wouldn't be hard to look or search before opening this thread... And yet you demand to be spoonfed. But that's ok, you still got replies.
Then in another post you proceed to be a d1ck and condescending to the posters here. You know what, it's idiots like you who only come in demanding ti be sponfed and then disappear without contributing that make the S2+ forum a ghost town.
Sent from my GT-I9105 using xda app-developers app
Sorry if it felt like that. Trust me I would like to contribute if I could, but I literally cannot now. Just thought I could get some opinions going on. And there is nothing wrong if this is a dead place for the time being. I said this place need some organization its to cause this is still a bit new phone and people are going to start rolling in eventually. Also just because I don't post anything doesn't mean I don't read. I like to lurk and see what' up, would help somebody more often but I think there are people who can help/explain better.
Thanks for such a warm welcome guys. It's a hard enough for me to get online. Using a phone fully as a home computer cant be enough to start helping everyone. I'm still learning, trying my best for school and my parents are divorcing so there is a chance I might start living just for rent instead of joining a university. I'm sorry for what I said, but really I'm just trying to be mature here. So if there is somehow I can help the forums just say, really don't want to ask and leave like **** as you said.
First you have to write more respectful posts like you just did.
And follow the guides in the forum which teaches you how to build Rom or make mods. You can search them.
I'm not an expert in developing but I think normal questions should do

leason learned. also now the phone is dead. got it to warranty yesterday. it died while charging, pluged it in, left it, come back to see that it shows no life. i did saw something like glue melt under the flash, but one of the two bubles faded after a while. but it cannot be water i swear. i did no overclocking, even had it underclocked to 800Mhz. the lady said this could take a week. if anyone is interested i can update on the status when i get something on theyr site.
Aside from better graphics and widgets, performance boost is definitely a worth. Battery life as said by many is not experienced by me yet. Maybe bad ROM flash, will re-flash ROM by the end of the month.
if I do get it back I'll try it out. untill then just to add up a little: sent it in rooted with the bin.counter probably above 1, now I fear that they will dismount the chip to read it to see the bin.count ;_; maybe i'm getting paranoied. anyway the site now says its being sent to some other building, nothing more till now. sorry for slow comebacks but now I'm using a gliched out smart tvs browser with gettho internet connection.
this could not have went any better. they say its water damaged and the replacement motherboard will cost something about 140 USD. Never in my life has a device gotten water damaged and they just say the whole motherboard needs to be replaced. worst day ever.

That is sad. Very sad. I know how it sucks to find out warranty not getting claimed. I bought a tablet 2 days back for my mum and it had hardware problem which broke my heart. The phone new is for 270 dollars in my country. 140 is way too much.

An unbricker gizmo?
I heard that for the captivate and i9000, there is a little USB tricking jig that touches 2 points in the usb port area using 3 resistors. This forces the phone into download mode. Isn't there something like that, that could be used incase we hard bricked our phones incase we wanted to test this and it bricked us?
I AM WAY TO SCARED TO TEST THIS AS DAD BOUGHT ME THIS PHONE AFTER I BROKE MY HTC DREAM(G1), AND I AM TOO SCARED TO DO ANYTHING THAT COULD HARDBRICK OR PHYSICALBRICK MY PHONE.
(I would have been happier with an android device that is easier to DEV for though. Maybe an MT4G or even a G2 or a Nexus S. Samsung has completely screwed android to the point that we can't even install cm7 YET)

I had CM9 On my rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, and my phone would crash randomly in the middle of changing songs on playerpro or in the middle of phone calls, so I tried to download SiyahKernel hoping it would add some stability to my ROM. Well I had 2 different versions of the kernel somehow. One was SiyahKernel 3.something, and the other was 2.5. I assumed the 3.something would be for the S3 and the 2 something was a false download that I got on accident and was made for the S2 or something, but when I tried to flash the 3.something it didn't work, versus when I tried flashing the 2.5 it installed perfectly fine. So, here's the fun part...when I went to reboot my phone it died COMPLETELY. I can't start the phone in download mode to odin it, can't get into recovery to flash an old nandroid. Phone won't turn on, won't charge, will do absolutely nothing, and I know for sure the battery was charged to 90% when it crapped out. I've done battery pulls, I actually did a 3 hour battery pull at one point...I don't have insurance, and I don't have the $$$ to go buy another phone, so if anyone has some ideas on how I could either get my phone back operational, or a cheaper solution (like a jigg) it would be MUCH appreciated. I wasn't just a noob jumping into it on my S3, I've been rooting, romming, and flashing **** since 2009, and it's my 10th smartphone, but my first brick ever. Please help!

This post is ridiculous. Asurion blows, never have had a good experience with them over using 5 phones insured by them. Only ever had 2 crap out on me (hardware-wise. If it was ever software related I did it, and knew exactly how to handle it, but the 2 that were done were spidered screens). They gave me a broken refurbished evo back for the very first phone I ever had that I rooted, rommed, and hacked on for DAYS trying to learn the entire process...all those manhours and they send me a refurbished phone with nothing on it, and a screwed up LCD digitzer...do NOT recommend asurion whatsoever, and will never use them again no matter what carrier I go with.

Why would you use odin to flash a kernel? I use cwm all the time for roms and kernels alike. Odin for radios or to return to stock. Cwm does everything else I need it to do. Same mistake could have been made on a computer guy downloaded two kernels and flashed the wrong one.
OP I am sorry for your loss.

imo insurance fraud is not the right answer. the right thing to do is research then flash, dont flash then research. ofcourse its now standard in america to be bailed out for every mistake we make, so perhaps your right.... I have yet to cave in and accept this kind of mentality.
The profit margins these companies make is ridiculous to begin with. It's not fraud, the only thing that may be considered even close to it is claiming that the phone is missing or damaged beyond repair due to something that was out of your control. Non the less your insurance covers all these avenues twice a year.
In reality, a bricked phone should be covered under insurance, and I'm sure if you have the proper legal knowledge you could argue that further and make them cover it without having to tell a white lie. Insurance is simple, covering a loss. And a loss is technically a brick (that's not open for debate either, that's correct), but there is a loophole they use where they can refuse to honor a claim if they feel to do so (hence modifications).
F that. I pay for insurance, I do my part. Not to mention when I actually signed up for the insurance, I asked the vzw rep if a rooted phone is covered, and his response was exactly this: don't take a chance, smash it up and send it back, or disappear the device.
I do not abuse or condone anything of what I said, I have yet to make a claim, but be assured, if I brick my device after 5 years of carrying ins. I am getting my money's worth out of it.

There isn't a thread for this for our phone, so I thought I would make one seeing as i've tried it. A program called mobile odin https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&feature=nav_result Will allow you to run odin from your device without connecting it to your computer. Its super simple to use and it works pretty well. My charging port is hosed so I can't connect it anyways. I was on ICS and needed to go back to GB. Had to use this app and got back on GB no problem. I don't see a free version of the app anywhere so depending on how much you use odin, 5 bucks might be a good investment.
Hmm I ran the program and sent the logs a few months ago and never heard anything back to get our device supported and still doesn't say it supports this device.
It takes 30 minutes to run the system dump to find out our device isn't compatible......after running the dump....and to find out it wouldn't work
Its not worth the hassle when you've only got 15 minutes to get the refund.
I'd like to see screenshots or something to show that this actually does officially work on our device ....considering its not on the list of compatible devices.
Thanks
I guess after 2 days without a response ....there's not going to be one?
To bad I was hoping that it was going to be worth the money

A search would show that XDA members gets a lite version as with lots of other apps for free.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
Ive run it.....it generates a dump file (mobileodin.txt) that you send in and hope that he incorperates your device in the next update .....and since it does this ...it basically is not suported as of yet.
So the op is saying it works.....but in fact it doesnt.
I would like to see some evidence that it works for him and like to know how it does on his device and not on mine.
Also with the lite version you have to dl a flash kernal specific to your device from that same thread....but since our device is not suported...you wont find one.
Y'all should do alot more reading before posting links to something that doesnt suport our device.
i did read that thread thuroughly....very thuroughly, even flashed a few flash kernals he added that were for the other models similar to ours in great hopes of getting this to work.
This is what you get....it does take about 30 minutes to generate the text file to send in
Oh magda623....are you there?
we are awaiting your reply.
Im sure there is hundreds of us that would like to have this running on our phones...please let us know how to make it work.
Ok ok i give up on magda to humor us on how it works on his device.
I urge everyone to use the link a couple posts up and dl the mobile odin lite, run it and send your mobileodin.txt to chainfire and plead with him to include our device....im sure he will eventually get our message.....after all he does say he is only working on samsung devices at this time.

I've stayed out of this one for just that reason. It's bad enough to be messing with the underpinnings of an OS when you don't have true single-user mode, a "safe" boot, kernel, and emergency filesystem available, nor alternate boot media if things go really bad. Doing all that from user-land while the system is running all services sounds like just asking for trouble.
You can do most of what you are asking for in Recovery
Flash kernel/boot/recovery
Flash /system
Flash other run-time partitions
Flash modem
If you can't get into recovery, are you really able to run some Android program?
I'm not really seeing the need for this, except for people who have broken their USB connector and can't connect to a computer. Even then, when would you need ODIN? When things are so hozed up you need to start from scratch, yes, but if you have a broken USB, what are you doing flashing risky things?
If someone can show what this would do that you can't do in recovery, as well as a meaningful use case for it, I'll mull over how to do it. Basically, if an app can do it, a script in recovery sure should be able to as well.
I tend to think the reason we dont have support is because of the quirkiness of this phone.
I agree eollie ....I gave up on this a while ago...really it doesn't matter to me anyhow....I mostly thought it was a great idea.
I don't tend to have issues with flashing...or recovering.
And even if I did....I wouldn't be dumb enough to post here lmao.
Hello to all the people of the world who share this amazing interest in their electronics.
Please let me begin by saying that this is my first post and have searched for hours over the last five days to try and find the answers and learn more about my situation, and I thank anyone who takes the time to respond ahead of time.
I am the owner of a what I believe to be a hard bricked verizon sch-i535.
I started with the stock phone and I decided to try the update I found on this wonderful site.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
"[GUIDE] Jelly Bean Factory Image (Root/Recovery/Unlocked Bootloader) *UPDATED 12/6*"
I followed the directions perfectly, installed TWRP Recovery, added SuperSU, and went with both Root and Unlocked Bootloader option.
Everything went perfect. The phone rebooted, opened loaded android jelly bean perfect and I was able to make a recovery back up, by entering TWRP recovery mode, three button combo, vol up, power, home. This all went perfectly according to plan.
My problem arose when I pushed my luck and lack of research which I rightly admit and decided to try and then upload one of the modified roms.
I decided to go with the latest AOKP milestone, that i downloaded from the AOKP site.
aokp_i9300_jb_milestone-1.zip
I had spent some time researching and was pretty sure I understood what to do.
I entered TWRP with the three button recovery mode option (vol up, home, power), made a second back up, did the factory reset swipe, cleared both caches, then tried to install "aokp_i9300_jb_milestone-1.zip" from sd card which was on the list. The phone reloaded, the screen went black and enter what i now believe to be hard brick status.
I have tried all the simple fixes, ordered and used a download jig, removed battery, no button responses, not recognized by odin on xp, computer chimes but does not recognize phone. This is where I'm at and how I have gotten here. If only
I have been researching JTAG and the RIFF box, and now also the ORT JTAG box. There are people who are supposidly doing JTAG repairs on the sch-i535 even though all of the sales sites for these boxes do not show the Snap dragon msm 8960 chip set is supported. I realize I could just send this phone to them but I would really like to repair it myself if I can purchase the correct tools. I have searched high and low and would just like to know if anyone on here has any experience with this type of repair if you think its an option in my case. I have also read that people who have had hard bricks with the same symptoms have had to replace the motherboard. If JTAG repair with RIFF box is possible, can I use the same JTAG jig as the one designed for the i747 version which is also based on the same chipset? I realize that the actual programing is different between carriers but if the RIFF box has the correct verizon software can it be used with i747 JTAG jig?
I have also read about the option to use a good SCH-I535 to make a boot sd card and then short the resistor on the bricked phone. There really hasn't been much written about success with this option. I am a person who believes I can fix anything, and would like to be able to repair it in the future if I can find the right tools and also help others in my area. Is it really dead or can I still resurrect my phone?
Thanks a lot to all of you at XDA.

No, my phone is completely unresponsive. Neither of the three button press options nor the download jig I ordered do anything.
your problem lies in the fact that you flashed an i9300 (international variant) rom onto your us variant rom. unfortunately they're not compatible and most probably bricked your phone unless you are somehow able to go back into download mode and use odin to flash the appropriate stock rom for your verizon s3.

Thanks for your response. A question about the variants. Was it the No wipe version, or the AOKP version? I'm thinking the AOKP due to the fact that the phone booted up perfect after the no-wipe Jelly bean. Or am I wrong, and would it appear to operate fine at beginning only to crash after?

The problem is you flashed the I9300 AOKP on your Verizon S3. Guaranteed hard brick every time.
Glad to see you've been researching and you're on the right path, is gonna need JTAG. here is the link everyone uses. You may be able email and ask what method they use to determine if you can do it yourself. I'd guess it's expensive, but it may be something you want to do.

My guess is that I7 box will do no good. There has to be more to JTag. In the beginning Josh at Mobile Tech could JTag the other Variants but not the I535. He now can so apparently there is more needed than just the box.

Thanks for your response. I have spent at least 5 hours a night since Monday to try to figure this all out. I am learning a lot about this phone and the processes here on xda, and all it has done is peak my interest even more. I'm definitely in the camp that believes its wrong to take back a perfectly good phone that is technically only "asleep." :fingers-crossed:
add another one to the jtag tryouts!

sorry the late response since apparently this got moved to the appropriate forum.
it's the i9300 rom which if i remembered correctly, is the AOKP. You need to somehow get back to download mode and use odin to flash the proper stock rom into it.
Good luck
Success!
Well not exactly but my phone is completely fixed thanks to Josh at MOBILE TECH VIDEOS! After extensively searching for answers and figuring out what I had done there was only one option. JTAG. I realize I could have just brought it back to Verizon and exchanged it but I wasn't willing to risk getting a refurb when I knew there was nothing physically wrong with my phone. I called the Mobile Tech Videos number last Tuesday afternoon to make sure I could speak to a person before just placing my phone in the mail. The person who answered was actually Josh the owner. I explained what I had done to the phone and he explained exactly what I did internally to the phone and that he could definitely help me. He even told me of a notebook program that would let me read the code before had and I would have seen that I had an international ROM. He was very easy to talk to and took the time to explain to me information that he has probably said 1000s of times all with patience and a genuine desire to help me understand.
I packaged my phone up on Tuesday and mailed it the way his very well designed website said to. He told me exactly what would happen and it did. I received an email Friday stating that they had received my phone and that because I had paid the additional 15$ for the expedited service, that the phone would be fixed and shipped within 2 business days. Monday I received another email that my phone was fixed and shipped with a tracking number. I had also paid for the expedited shipping so I received my phone today! 4 day turn around...Awesome! :victory:
It was packaged in a small bubble wrap envelope inside a larger bubble wrap envelope inside of the outer shipping envelope safe and sound.
Came home put sim card, battery in and it came to LIFE! I went back over all the correct steps I had done and reinstalled Jelly bean with TWRP and both the superuser and root unlock option. SO glad to have my phone working again thanks to MOBILE TECH VIDEOS and Josh but also everyone here at XDA! Thanks Again!
I hard bricked mine following a soft brick. Followed the guide to the letter, or so I thought. Anyway I ended up with a paperweight. I didnt know about jtag repair so I talked with samsung and explained what happened and even told them it as a rooted bad flash. They advised to send it in to them and they would fix. Sent off on friday and got it back yesterday. Samsung replaced the motheboard and did it under warranty. I should have had to pay something but did not have to. I learned my lesson on paperweights. Phone was rooted as quickly as possible, installed ota rootkeeper and took the ota this morning. So far everything is golden.

Its the best guy and he has very good service and he's very quick also you can give him a call at 518.847.7473. This is the best option for your bricked phone I promise.
okay, I just bought this phone 2 days ago. really different from a windows phone. im getting use to it... but, ive been doing research on here on how to root it. after an hour I found one. much help is really appreciated! (im gonna sound really noobish when I say this)
how can you tell if your usb debugging is on, on your phone?
I literally went through every options on settings, looking through the booklet and nothing.
if its possible id like to root it without hooking it up to a computer?
I use to have older droids, and I could download apps and root it on the phone those were the days :good::good:
ROMS
I tried to rom a ascend y straight talk phone it ended up broke. I tried it with 3 different ascend y phones. any guide for that for the s3 or with my experience just leave it alone and don't touch it?
the keyboard
is it just me or is the keyboard slow when you type for texting? it cant keep up with me....all my other phones could and the Ram memory is very low too....it very's from 300MB-450MB out of 1.5GB.
is their a good way to make my signal stronger?
I live out in the boonies and every network I have had...it got great signal except Verizon...the most I get is 2 bars mostly just 1 very annoying....(when I had the ascend Y Verizon phone I found a way to boost my signal and I literally got 3-4 bars out where I lived until I tried to flash it with a rom "oopps my bad")

P.S.
I don't know if its locked or unlocked (bootloader)
Checking if USB Debugging is available is just a matter of going to Settings > Developer Options and then looking for a tick mark checked near the option that reads "USB Debugging."
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for root on the Straighttalk SIII being as that I do not own the device (rather I own the Verizon variant). However, a quick forum search might turn up some results...
EDIT: It appears that there is something called "Cydia Impactor" that takes advantage of a couple bugs found in previous versions of android. According to other threads with talk about it, it seems that it works in general for gaining root. Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47412631&postcount=7. Note: Do install a superuser manager on your device right after obtaining root (assuming you gain it) as you don't want everything to have root access!
As for ROMs, what I stated above holds true for these as well. In theory, with an unlocked bootloader (if you have one), then flashing roms is only a matter of checking compatibility with your phone. But I'll save the details about that for now...
The stock keyboard didn't work out for me either. However on Google Play, you can download more keyboards that may prove to be more convenient for you!
As for signal strength, I am currently unaware of any way to actually boost it... However, I do agree that the signal strength I get on my SIII is slightly weaker compared some of the other phones on the market out there, but with a call to Verizon, you may be able to get a signal booster.
Hope that helps

I have looked but, most of them are not the same model. I wanna be safe than sorry besides ive looked at 2-5 forums and they had to be plugged up to a computer. id rather have a simple root in area.
about the bootloader how can I tell if its locked or unlocked? if its locked how can I unlock it?
im not using the stock keyboard. ive downloaded 4 keyboards and they are the same as the original keyboard....its either im typing to fast or the phone dislikes me in every way.

Do NOT try to unlock your phone as it WILL hard brick! I am saying this from personal experience. You will have to spend $50 for a JTAG repair.

Hmm, upon some searching, I found something called "Framaroot" that one can install on a phone (it's an app) in hopes of achieving root access. It supposedly executes various exploits to get SuperSu and the su binary loaded. Anyways, while our S3s are not exactly listed as compatible, the author does mention that if the phone share a similar processor, it may be compatible.

For rooting the sch-s968c samsung galaxy s3 from straight talk, and everything on roms this is the link you want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516498
Cydiaimpactor method does work. that is how I rooted mine. Works great. I haven't played with roms yet because I have not found the need. But these guys over at that link are playing around finding out what works and what does not.
As far as rooting without the computer I have not seen a way yet. But the cydiaimpactor method takes 4 to 5 seconds, and is very very simple.
There is not a lot more info I can give you because there is not a lot of info in the rooting world about the sch-s968c. If you find anything please share!

Hope ya get it rooted. You could try poot also.. Need no computer and it claims to root all/most QualCom devices. Just know that anything could happen while modding the phone and if stuff were to go down it would take a computer to recover if you did hit worse case.
Impactor is by far the quickest easiest way if you know what you are doing and have access to a PC. However if no access to PC try framaroot as suggested. Go to the framaroot thread here on xda and look for the download link in first post. If you read the first post it tells you the newest version out, always read first instead of expecting to be spoonfed or just jumping in this unprepared. Install the app on your phone and run it. If it fails then you need to find a computer to use Impactor
Hope this helps!
