quick question about updating cyanogen roms!

hey there i have cm 4.2.5 right now and i want to update to current. do i need to update 4.2.6-4.2.9 individually or just update with the newest rom? thanks guys
You can just apply the newest one
this couldn't have gone in the existing cyanogen thread?

omg he created a new thread,,, lets beat him senseless,, dood grow up. lol. did you need to actually reply to this thread?
this is a user end question about a rom that already has a dedicated thread full of similar questions which is where they're meant to be. if every single question like this was asked in a new thread then no one would ever find the threads on roms and development that are the reason this forum exists. general user questions either go in the general sapphire forum or go in the existing threads. end of, move on.

He's right though. If people at least post redundant questions in the right thread, then they don't clutter up threads where they shouldn't have been asked at all.
It also makes it easier to find the answers if the questions aren't spread everywhere.
In this case, however, confusion easily arises when the Cyanogen thread is in the Dream forum and you own a Sapphire. Not immediately obvious where to ask relevant questions.
My own strategy is to provide a concise, clear, useful answer to the immediate question and also add ad vice about how to handle future questions. I don't really understand people who posting in response and neither help nor provide useful advice. That IS a waste of time.
wow was it really that big of a deal what a welcoming community
thanks to you guys that didnt give me **** and answered the simple question. I'll be more conscious of where i post next time

People, including me, are a little bit sensitive about the development forum. This probably should've gone in the Q&A section as its not directly development related...also the cyanogenmod wiki is a very good resource that it seems a lot of new users don't know about.
You shouldn't be afraid to ask questions and I apologize that it has become like that. This community really is amazing.
Google, read the wiki, read the thread, post in Q and A, hit up #cyanogenmod on freenode, etc. There is a ton of support available - maybe steer clear of the dev forum - it gets ugly, as you've seen.
Welcome to XDA

What differentiates General from Q&A?

With all these threads being moved about quite actively, and that may be a good thing, I myself am not schooled on the difference between what constitutes a general purpose thread versus one that should be considered more of a Q&A type thing. For instance, aren't 90% of the threads here in this forum begun as questions that are missing a question mark in the title? Ether the OP had forgotten to indicate the existence of a question in the thread title or the title is misleading, because invariably, you will find in the OP, you guessed it, a question. So, what's the dealy-o?
General: "The MyTouch 4G looks AWESOME in red!!!"
Q&A: "Does the MyTouch 4G look awesome in red???"
That's about the only diff I've been able to tell
I have to kinda agree. I tried to implement a well known and proven successful thread from WM here, to have place for answers to commonly ask questions with answers in a single thread closed to other post where anyone with a question could look to see the answer before posting. Mainly for Android development but it go shot down by the Moderator. IMHO General should be a place to ask all general questions so the Q & A section is pointless.
Shouldn't this be in the Q&A thread? LOL, just kidding

Q&A section is for questions that have a clear cut answer. General if for a community discussion about a subject. I try to evaluate each thread as if it is for discussion or for Q&A, and sometimes it's hard and I get it wrong. If I do and you feel I made a mistake, feel free to shoot me a PM with your reasoning and I'll take a second look.
Thanks,
Korey

Why not put a list of all the questions that have answers on the first post of your Q&A thread? Then once people get used to checking there first before posting, it will reduce asked question and unnecessary post.

Well that's kinda the point of the Q&A section. Users good just get use to searching as well

Well whatever but as you and I know the majority of users will still not search so in theory it is good but in reality we know what happens. I had my doubts when the WM thread in chefs central started but I can tell you it made a positive impact and works very well, and to have all the solved questions and links to the solved thread in the first post for easy reference helps everyone. Sometimes even the search fails us. It is just a friendly suggestion take it for what it's worth.
Well if someone makes a FAQ thread and makes it look nice, and promises to update it often. I promise to sticky it
I think the two sections are pointless and should be merged as one or too many things are being moved to Q&A, i dont remember every single question being moved into Q&A on the vibrant forum

ATTENTION [9001] prefix!!!!

All posts not related to development will from now on be moved to their respective forums.
It is in your best interest to have a [9001] prefix so that your thread will be replied to and looked at.
Cheers
finally some action regarding this issue
Hello broncogr,
IMHO if you move the few themes we have for the 9001 into the 9000 section they will be lost :'(
I would suggest that it would be best to leave them here until there is a lot of development traffic in the forum, at which point they could be moved to a 9001 theme forum.
My 2 cents... cheers

They will not be lost the will have the [9001] Prefix.
Unfortunately this is a development forum so only Roms and such should be here.
Sorry

Not too sure...
I'm guessing that best way of cleaning out the stuff would be creating separate forum for 'Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001' as it is done with other phones/brands.
Throwing everything into one bag under I9000 (even with prefix) is not the best idea.
...current state is not perfect but at least topics regarding both phones are separated.. you want to mix and stir all of this.. this ain't proper solution, this is workaround and it's not even good enough..
If we want to change something let's change it properly - separate forum for I900..
My 2 cents

MObuch
It has been decided that there will not be a dedicated 9001 forum.
So the only solution remaining is what is been done now.
There will be a dedicated subforum STRICTLY for development and all other questions or whatever will be filled under the other forums with the 9001 prefix.
Well.. it's Mod's decision.. thus we need to live with that.. whether we like it or not..
--
MObuch
this is really a bad idea. why should 9001 mix with 9000? both is a totally different phone. And not only that, by doing this, it will make us 9001 user difficult to find themes and tweak. because 1) it is messy now that 9001 has been mix with 9000. 2) we need to go page by page to see if there is any new themes or mod for our phone. Take for example today the ICS theme for 9001 in 9000 thread is in page 2. Then if there is a new tweak, the thread will be buried by 9000 thread and end up few pages behind as the users 9000 are more active.
previously everything is so much easier, i log in and i can look at first page of the thread to see if there is any new tweaks or themes. Now looks like it has been moved to some other sections which are not really related to our phones.
please think bout this.
I am sorry but this is how things are going to work out from now on.
This is a development subforum and as such it should contain only development.
This has been heavily discussed before it was implemented.
Everyone should use the [9001] prefix in the other forums which will make things easier.
Cheers
i have an idea
Y not make a stock, which will link to all guides/themes/other useful threads?

One big question: what is development? Themeing is development (of content) too, and much theming stuff also contains development within the APK's...

Still someone that maintains those threads will need to keep that topic up to date...
Ok then someone can make an index thread which I will stick in the 9001 dev forum that wil lcontain all the links to themes and so on in the other forums.
Mind you this thread will need to be maintained a lot so the one who will make such a thread will need to be commited to it.

Development in our case is Rom and Kernel development.
Also some mods can be allowed.

Why not just remove the word Development of the forum name and leave all I9001 threads in here. Honestly, in my opinion you guys are taking up way too much work - you'll be continuously moving threads from 1 forum to the other

will the release of the asus jellybean help out with cm10 and the likes?

as of yesterday it was to be within the next 72 hours right?
it'll be available tommorrow, and yes it will help with development.

Don't post much, okay, maybe never, maybe it's because people seem to love to be jerks around these parts
Common sense would seem to dictate that a question about the development of a custom ROM would fit in the...wait for it...DEVELOPMENT forum. You know, because the release of open source code for developers as it relates to development would fit in the development forum. Just saying.
</endrant>
<begincontrition>
So prior to posting, I decided to read the Announcements post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=1665). Apparently, I'm wrong.
"Development Forums (ones with the word development in the title)- For developers to post release threads e.g. ROMs, Kernels, and mods."
Ugh, I hate being wrong.
Yeah it helps to read the forums rules first. I still don't understand why this dev forum allows probationary users to post in it.

Well not everyone who's writing helpful things in the dev section is a dev or a recognized contributor.
Lol what is a probationary user?
probationary = less than 10 useful posts. it was implemented a while back to keep noobs from posting in the dev sections, although the rule doesn't seem to have been applied to this sub-forum. i imagine they did a blanket apply and any new forums created since then don't have it.

Excellent.
Moved to the correct board....
To move to the topic at hand... Yes, I believe the release of JB will boost custom development. Source? I don't know, just a gut feeling. They will strip down the TF700 JB and work from there, compared to porting to JB from another model.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T
Keep an eye on the asus firmware site for the new kernel source.
Once that is released things should get interesting around here.
