Note 8 and Samsung multimedia dock - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

I got the multimedia dock on a lark to see if it would work with ay Note 8 and I'm pleased to report that it works splendidly. I use it to stream shows to my Sony TV and I can even connect keyboard and mouse and use it as sort of a backup computer.
With the TV it is like a cable remote from the late 60's, very retro.

Have you tested it with 4.2.2 yet?
I could no longer sync with it and went back to 4.1.2

As far as I know Samsung only makes one multimedia dock that will fit the micro USB port of the Note 8, this.

I have 4.1.2 and I use it connected to my tv, not my pc. I did try using the new Sidesync, but it has to be connected directly, not through the micro USB port on the dock. Perhaps that is used exclusively for power?

I've discovered that the multimedia dock has another shortcoming together with the Note 8. USB memory drives are not recognized by the device, the dock has specs for 32 GB drives, and those seem to work with the Galaxy Note 2, S3 and S4, but not with the Note 8.
I've also tried connecting my original Note, but nothing is recognized. Around the micro USB connector is a plastic pad that pushes down and even rotates a tad, probably for better viewing angle. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with recognizing connected devices.
Out of curiosity, I wonder if anyone with rooted devices have been able to use the multimedia dock as a connected peripheral?

I have a Smart dock here and 4.2.2 but smart dock only charges. No HDMI or USB things. Thinking about to flash back to 4.1.2...

Running 4.2.2 and I have just tried the USB ports with a keyboard, mouse and USB drives and none of them are recognised. Headphones do not work connected to the dock. However, the stand does hold the Note 8 nicely while it charges, even while it is in its Samsung flip case. The power lead seems to need to be inserted after the Note has been placed in the stand to start the charging. Maybe Samsung will reinstate the dock in the next update, here's hoping

I use the original Motorola Standard HDMI Dock. It is universal and works with any Motorola Devices, as example Droid4, Droid3, Photon Q and Xoom2 Tablet.

Anyone know of a desk dock that can fit the Photon Q with a case on it (particularly the Otterbox Commuter)? The Otterbox case is thick, so probably not but I'm hoping anyway...

my phq works fine with usb-otg adapter, i can read some usb flash disk that i have.
but as far as i know, when usb-otg adapter connected, the phone will give voltage/power to the USB device.
at this point i have doubt about phq + the multimedia dock.
reason being is the dock provide USB connection and at the same time (I assume) it provide charging power to the phone.
this is conflicting as if the USB port means to connect to other devices (keyboard/mouse) as USB-OTG, then at the same time phone try to give power + get power from the charger. this may damage the phone.
but i may be wrong as i don't have the dock.
the dock mentioned by the OP is quite cheap on [email protected], i think i'll grab one. thx for sharing

Hi!
I thought so myself. After buying one from ebay I can say it dose NOT fit. First: the hdmi pin on the dock is turned by 180 degrees.
After fixing that by removeing the complete hdmi pin from dock I could test the fit. The Q is to large for the dock. It will fit uneaven if tried with serious force. I did not want to damage the usb port on my q for a worse 'fitting' dock...

I know its been over a half a year since you asked and no one replied but I figured maybe you would still appreciate a response. There seem to be two dock modes: Desk (what you call bedside) and Car. Motorola made an official dock for this phone which put it into car mode however it seemed to have been pretty limitedly available when it was out and is now discontinued; thanks for abandoning us Moto. I cant even seem to find it listed on amazon used which is annoying as I have one I want to sell off (hint hint).
It has a special USB cable that goes with it that has an audio out cable down at the end where it plugs into the car charger so you dont have to plug a headphone cable into your phone to get audio out to your stereo, worked quite well when my phone was still alive.
I also have one of these droid 3 desk docks mentioned here that I need to find a good home for now.

you can see the info from their overseas website here but have to use the US site for US folks where there is no information located here. they ship it from Germany to their US website office then to US address.
mine arrives Friday and will test out using external drive with movies on it etc.. also combining using the MHL feature to play that movie on a monitor and also using my HDMI to VGA adapter to play it on a projector all while keeping charged. crossing my finger.
of course this would be great for USB devices like joysticks, keyboard, etc..
Thanks for posting this. Please do keep us updated as to how it goes and what connections you try out. I'd be very curious.

i am sending it back sadly. it may work for custom Roms but on my older Sammy stuff like my S4 and N3 it does everything you would expect including charging it while it operates. on the Tab S it doesnt even recognize it is attached and does not charge either.
i have been speaking with Lindy and they are going to look at a possible solution but who knows when if ever.
it doesnt appear that anything out there today will accomplish this on the new Sammy tablets as i have looked at everything on the web i think

I agree however most board rooms that setup is not going to work. I also have a projector for kids movies outside and several other things like that.
I just received MHL adapter from Eeekit. It works only partialy. It does screen mirroring but it does not charge. Battery icon shows red x and status "Not charging" when connected. And another problem is that it only supports 1080p with 24Hz refresh rate. It is fine for bluray ripped movies but not for anything else including games and all online streams (NBC Sports Live Extra for example) cause they are probably streamed at 30fps so video is choppy. I had the same issue with oem Samsung MHL 2.0 dapter and my Galaxy S3. So is is there any other way to mirror Galaxy Tab S screen with 60Hz and without using a router?

Note 2 dock works with Note 4

Just wanted to let you all know the Note 2 dock works great with my Note 4.
I'm not sure if adaptive fast charging is in effect, I am using the fast charger and cable that came with the Note 4. But I think maybe it is.
Anyway, I'm just happy I can use my old dock.
I upgraded from the Galaxy S3 and am surprised that dock I had for it works with the Note 4. I always use my phone as a night stand clock and alarm.
If fast charging is working you will see a message on screen telling you so.
Yeah, unfortunately fast charging does not work via the dock. It's normal speed charging, which is fine if you're setting it next to your bed while you sleep.
Too bad, would've been awesome if it fast charged. But it does work fine otherwise, the Note 4 even recognizes the dock with a message.
Is it the one with the audio out? Does it works with the Note 4?
Is this the multimedia dock with the HDMI out and USB connectors for a keyboard and mouse? If so, I'm jumping on one of these. My no-name knock-off dock that worked with my Note 3 does not work with my Note 4, so this would be sweet if it is the multimedia dock.
Here is the one I had that worked on the 3 but NOT the 4. It won't even charge the Note 4. Heck, it won't even acknowledge that it is there at all... Needless to say, don't get this one for your Note 4...

Samsung notes that the same line. course is generally poorly
Seems They have removed audio output from Galaxy note 4
When used with smart dock it does not recognize my usb speakers(or my USB Dac) anymore and also line out doesn't work either.
I just have hdmi audio
I hope when they update the Note 3 OS they do not remove this usb thingy
I just posted this in another thread, posting it here too because it applies:
I had the same issue, was pretty bummed to find out that the desk dock I was using next to my bed with my s4 wouldn't play audio through the speakers I've got set up. Did a lot of looking around and didn't find any solutions currently, but I did find out something interesting that might explain some of this- It looks like Lollipop will have native support for audio out through USB. Makes me wonder if Samsung didn't include this feature in the s5 or Note 4 because they are waiting for L to drop, and will update touchwiz to handle it at that point? I can't find any confirmation of this anywhere so it's just speculation on my part, but it does seem to make sense. Why put the time and effort into designing a feature that will be coming standard in the next rev of Android anyway?
Maybe...maybe not.We ll have to wait &see about this.if Samsung keeps all features of lollipop.
But yes there is some reason to be optimistic

Your using whats called an OTG cable to connect to the DAC. That does work as I have stated earlier. Previous versions of the note family have not needed dacs as the natively ran audio from usb straight no external dac required.
HDMI Compatability?
I realize the dock can charge a new Note 4 but I'm interested in having HDMI out. I have a note 2 and accompanying dock and I'd like to change carriers - when I do so, I'd like to upgrade my phone. I really enjoy being able to simply plug in USB devices, while having the phone docked and charging AND attached to my TV via HDMI and I'd hate to lose this ability. When the note 2 came out, the dock was announced as an accessory, but I've seen nothing about a similar accessory for the Note 4.
If the Note 2 dock doesn't do what I want with a Note 4, do I have an alternative in a clean, svelte, docking station as I have now?
Thanks in advance!

MHL For Pioneer AppRadio3

Hey guys.
This thread is about my Galaxy Note Edge but since it is basically the same as your Note 4's and this forum is more popular I thought someone might be able to assist me quicker
Before my Galaxy Note Edge I had the original Galaxy Note (N7000) and connected it via MHL to my Pioneer AppRadio to fully mirror my phone and it worked perfectly.
The Pioneer Android kit looks like this and comes with MHL...
{

So today I tried to connect my Edge to the AppRadio and it does not work :crying:
I have checked the power and when I connect the MHL power cable to my phone my phone charges so that is fine.
I have tried connecting my Sony Bravia TV to my Edge via MHL using a 'fresh HDMI cable' and it doesn't do anything.
Is the Pioneer MHL incompatible with the Edge (is it a 1st generation MHL) and the Edge can only use the current 3.0 generation OR is the Pioneer MHL compatible but mine is broken? Is the Note 4/Edge backwards compatible?
I really appreciate your help.
I have a note 4, and the appRadio 3 also.
You will require to use the Samsung MHL adapter as the phone requires 11 pin connector for the video output.
I tried many 3rd party adapter, but neither of them are stable. So, I just stick to the OEM one.
Just connects this adapter to the HDMI cable and the USB powered cable and you are good to go.
Hope that helps.
Benny
Thanks for your informative reply.
Having conducted some more research I have found the following:

I believe the Pioneer MHL provided is Generation 1 (5Pin)
Compatibility with 2nd generation phones is possible with 5-11 pin adapter.

The Edge needs an 11pin, like you said and the 5pin will not work on its own and so rather than use a rubbish adapter I have ordered the below.
This is the one I use and works great. I had a Samsung one, but the way the micro USB for charging plugs into the same side as the MHL connection to the phone is awkward. Also, the USB on the back of the head unit doesn't put out enough juice to charge the phone while running GPS/streaming and the like. So with this you have a little extra length to plug into a fast charger if you want, and run the MHL cable to a convenient spot since its a LOT thinner than an HDMI cable from the back.

Thanks for the advice. My original Galaxy Note charged to 100% when under full load with the standard power from the AppRadio. However your right in saying that the new Samsung MHL adapter will ruin my set up because during installation the HDMI/USB Power are in the same 'section' of the centre console and I can't stretch the USB power cable without an extension lead.
So I will use the below that I have fitted in the centre console for power.
So although I won't know if my Edge would drain using the AppRadio power (my N7000 did not do this) this is rated @ 3.6A / 18w and it should be fine.
I have just seen on Amazon that you can now get 4.2A / 20W car chargers which is crazy!
My new Samsung MHL device will arrive sometime today (thanks to Amazon Prime). So I will let you know what happens and take a picture of my current set up.
Ps. When you say 'Fast charger'... what in car charger or power output (e.g. 3.6amps) would you consider being equivalent to our home wall plug fast charger?

has anyone tried usb type c to hdmi cable accessories?

im trying to connect note 7 to my head unit via hdmi.
and i found this little bad boy

would this cable work for galaxy note 7 ? if not, is there any cable that i can transfer to othr screen via hdmi? let me know thanks!
I bought this and no dice. Usb works but no hdmi. Also it won't charge and use USB at the same time. Luckily wireless charging still works.
No MHL on the note 7. Samsung dropped it in favor of miracast / screen cast. Luckily though a Chromecast will do the trick for 35$. Aside from that you could get a miracast dongle. Haven't used those yet so i cant speak on how well they work.

well i've been using smart view to connect note 7 via miracast, but it lags compare to wired connection. same with chromecast also. it connects fine, but lag is my main issue.
Weird.....im getting no lag. Movies play fine buffering from my phone using localcast app. Some MKV movies play a bit choppy but that's the codec I think.
It's a shame because 4x usb and hdmi on 1 adapter is awesome if it all worked. Also, the phone wont charge using it. I am able to wireless fast charge though.

You tried installing the displaylink software on your phone and trying again?
I think these docs are displaylink certified. I have one in my office i will give it a go

I just tried it on the dell branded usbc one i have spare in my office with the display like app installed it doesnt work for the display on the note7
It works on the older one with my note3 though
Again. Note 7 dropped MHL. There is no physical link from gpu to the USB port if I'm reading correctly. I wish it wasn't so.

Wasn't HDMI or display port (not sure which) part of USB-c specs? If so, Note 7 usb-c port is out of spec, we need some software, or maybe it's HDCP, I don't think Display Port is certified for HDCP content, at least not by MS.
playing video and music is perfectly fine, but i need to connect this to my head unit and emulate touch as well from head unit. when note 7 is connected via smartview, theres about 1 second delay and its really annoying. so i was looking for a wired option instead of miracast....

Ah makes sense. My HU is a full blown quad core ( rk3188 ) android Radio with play access. I just tether and use the apps on the HU. I never tried the screen mirror app via USB but I will try later this evening to see if it lags
