GS3 random reboots....a lot of them - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I am posting this for a coworker. A little background on me, I have been rooting and romming since my Droid X (what a pain that was) so I like to think that I am not too noobish and know what I am doing. I currently have a GS4 rooted and rommed running Hyperdrive and I love it, no issues at all.
A coworker came to me with a stock, bloated up GS3 and wanted me to unlock and root it. I took an afternoon and did it for him, installed TWRP and ran a backup of the stock, rooted rom and said have a field day looking into flashing roms and kernels and such. He started reading up on it and got around to flashing CarbonROM (used to run it on my Gnex, loved it). After a few hours, he texted me and said he was getting reboots. The first thing that came to mind was maybe he forgot to wipe everything or something, so I instructed him to factory reset a few times and make sure it gets wiped clean. He did and reflashed and still was getting them. He then tried LiquidSmooth. Same results...I then instructed him to try going back to a TW based rom and he tried out Hyperdrive. Still same results. I tried to do some searching and I am out of ideas. I saw that sometimes Nova launcher can throw fits which I did install on there for him, but the last few times he said he was not using it. We tried a few different kernels as well, still no luck. Should I try and get the phone back to a stock, unrooted state and retry? Or is it a defective device maybe? It WAS a refurb sent back from Verizon as he was having issues a few weeks back and they had to send a replacement. Should I unroot it and get it to stock and have him return it? Any help would be awesome.

I'd say use odin to flash stock and see if he has any more reboots. If he does its defective. Even now I think its defective.

My thoughts exactly. I think I am going to give that a try. Thanks. Any other ideas appreciated too.

What kernel is he running?
I find certain kernels don't work well with my phone and will cause random rebooting.
My advice is to flash a different kernel.
Peace

This is the coworker. I had originally used the stock kernel, then switched to Zeus. Both kernels had the same issues. Ended up unrooted it and finding a whole slew of problems with the stock phone. Brought it back to be replaced with a new device. No refurbs allowed.

Also, what version of carbon is he using? I flashed 1.8 and it did a lot of random rebooting. 1.7 is more stable.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

I was using 1.8. I think I had around other issues with Carbon beyond why issues my phone has in general. For example, as I am typing this, the screen is wigging out with random flashes like it's going to crash. Yay.
Tip for the future: beware of refurbs....

Sound problem on thunderbolt

My wife and I both have Thunderbolts. I have not had this problem with mine so I am curious as to if anyone else has had a problem or if maybe she just has a bad tbolt. When she is on a call just out of nowhere the person on the other end can not hear her. This has happened when she has talked to multiple people and she has had good reception when it happens. This happened stock and on BAMF so I dont think it is a ROM problem. Anyone else having a similar thing happen, or do you think she has a bad tbolt?
I have not heard of this being a widespread issue, and I keep up with a lot of the Android forums. Sounds like a dud phone to me.
That's what I was thinking as well. Looks like its back to stock then Verizon for that bolt
I've had this problem from day 1. A bunch of different techs from VZW have looked into it and changed stuff on the backend and still no luck. :-(

davidbudd1, PLEASE let me/us know if swapping out the TB and/or the SIM fixed the issue for you! Here is a thread on Android Central that we've been trying to do some testing about this issue:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-thunderbolt/71734-can-you-hear-me-now.html
I'll keep you posted on what they tryband if it fixes it. I don't have a problem with this on mine, only my wife's phone. My buddy has a tbolt also and his doesn't have this problem. So to me it sounds like a bad phone.
Thank you SO much, I really appreciate it!

Hey man, any updates on this? I just went to VZW to get my phone swapped out and of course they said NO again because they couldn't reproduce the issue with 2 quick test calls.

Well I took her phone back to stock, and now she has been using since and it hasn't happened.again since. So I'm wondering if something didn't quite flash right.

I had that happen with mine the first time I tried to root it. ADB crashed on me in the middle of the process. I rebooted and started again and it appeared to finish, but I was experiencing that issue. I rolled everything back to stock and reran the root from scratch, I've had no problems since.

OK, I remember having an issue when I originally rooted also, so I used the shipped RUU to go back to out-of-the-box stock and then reran the root process, etc, and then restored my nandroid backup. I'll make some test calls this afternoon and then report back!
so if i download the the ruu it came with and flash it will it unroot an turn it back to stock?

is there a stock rom that can be flashed to just put the phone back in its original form? im planning on returning my phone and the unroot is super simple, but idk how to get back to the stock rom.

i know that the kinks will be worked out eventually but this phone isnt even stable for me on the stock rom, just gonna get something more stable for the time being, i cant handle having a glitchy slow phone, especially when its suppose to be as good as this phone is.
edit: also im looking for an actual rom not a nandroid backup, something i just flash from the sd card like any other rom, i've had stock roms to restore for every phone ive had, its just convenient to be able to flash back to stock for returns and repairs

the nandroid backup i provided would be as if your flashing. there are no extra apps. you just restore and than you unroot and factory reset. did you try eagleblood rom it makes the phone better than what it truly is. i was about to return and i tried that rom and its amazing.

i didnt realize how easy the nandroid thing was, but yeah i tried eagles blood rom, it was nice, it ran like stock without bloat and had a few cool color changes, but i still got the lag on my lock screen, randomly my audio files stop working til i rebooted and just other random lock ups with videos.
its a shame cuz i love the way the phone looks, and i might kick myself in the ass for returning it someday, but right now i just dont wanna wait for those kinks to get worked out, cm7 has alot of work ahead before its stable on this phone, and some of the issues im not even sure if cm7 can fix since they seem universal.

The lag on the lock screen is one of many things that will be fixed in the 2.3.3 update due later this month. Every preview that I watched before this phone was released said that this phone was meant to run 2.3.3. I guess they wanted to beat HTC out with duel core so the released it with 2.2. Watch the video on this link g2x running 2.3.3. This is the nature of any phone when first released. There will be bugs. Besides going out and just getting a different phone may not be so easy. Since this phone runs vanilla android it is a lot easier to update.

[Q] Anyone have issues replacing a phone with the counter set to more than 0?

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone has run into problems replacing a phone with Rogers/Samsung with their counter set to 1 or more.
I had asked the same question in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399182
but it was buried with some others so it wasn't really addressed.
I have a static crackle issue with my S2 i727R that was here before I rooted but didn't show up again until after I had rooted. My counter's at one and currently it seems there's no way to reset as I have Android 2.3.5 so I'd like to return it but I'm not sure if they will charge me or not.
So if anyone has done something similar and gotten away with it it would be good to know!
Thanks!
I think youll be fine just take it in and reaturn it. Just make sure your on the stock firmware. If not use odin to flash your stock tar. Ive actually reaturned an evo3d that was rooted and runing a custom rom when i handed it to them. With out issue
Cool, thanks man. I just wasn't too sure how anal they'd be. I'll flash back to stock and bring it in then.

Random Reboots

Lately, I've noticed my SGS4G randomly reboots itself. I'm not exactly sure why, I haven't changed anything about my phone since the latest Valhalla version came out, and it never rebooted itself when I first flashed the ROM.
I have CatLog (logcat reader) and aLogcat, but I'm not exactly sure how to use them to be able to tell what happens to my phone just before it reboots itself. There are so many lines that I don't know which one to look at. Can anyone please provide some assistance? My biggest worry is my phone rebooting or shutting itself off at night, and my alarm not loading properly, causing me to miss class in the morning.

What kernel is that running? I think (I might be wrong) it's bhundven's subtly modified stock. The versions past beta 2d (for me) have that issue. If that's the kernel it runs, go check the dev section for bhundven's kernel.
Yup, I have his latest kernel, v0.1.1-rc1. I'll try to downgrade to beta 2c and see if the reboots stop. Thanks for the suggestion.

No worries. Glad the problem is solved. I'm back on his latest kernel for testing. I've only been on it for a few hours, so I'm going to give it a day or two to see how it goes.
The thing that gets me is that the kernel worked perfectly fine from the time I flashed it up until a couple of days ago. I'll reflash the latest version in a few days to see if I can see what's triggering the reboot.

raver nor myself have been able to reproduce this issue. i normally run pandora and android irc all day. not to mention i brick my unbrickable moded phone a lot (lately); when i do i flash sms kj6 one-click, flash bootloaders, flash v0.1.1-rc1+, wipe to factory, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, reboot, let the phone sit for a half hour. This allows time for the main OS's cache to build. I usually charge to 100% before flashing and plug it back in while it sits for the half hour.
After that I manually re-configure my phone settings and TB restore my apps (not my data, just the apps).
I dont trust system settings/data being restored across different roms.

Hi Bryan
I enjoy your latest kernel 3.1 beta for the past 2 days (on HebrewValhalla ROM) and it's simply awesome.
I only had problems on 2d. 2c has been great as well.
To me, it seems that all reboots ppl were getting were related to Black Valhalla tweaking more than to your kernel.
Anyway, f#k it, if someone is not content let him flash other old kernels, i think you're doing a sacred work here.
You deserve a bier house.

My reboots were not attributed to Valhalla Black as I never loaded it. I reverted to beta 2d and the phone was stable. I'm back on his latest beta after a factory reset to see if it helps. Thus far, I am OK but I want to give it a few days to make sure.
I agree that Bryan's work is great. Unfortunately I think Bryan is leaving or is gone already. His kernel thread in the Dev section is closed & his signature indicates he's leaving. I wish him the best.
Sigh...it just randomly rebooted. So it seems that a factory reset doesn't help the issue.
I will be reverting to beta 2d again shortly.
Lol, wtf @ the signature. Seems rather childish. Anyway, I have exams for the next few days, so I'm gonna wait until those are done to wipe everything and try the latest kernel over again.
The problem just may be our phones. I'm sure there are hiccups in the manufacturing processing while the hardware is being compiled, so I doubt all of our phones are exactly the same. We may be that "lucky" few, Stephen.
Give me logs, don't give me logs. Can't reproduce, you're doing it wrong. I'm leaving

Yes, I have. I got a new phone and did the 2.3.6 update via Kies Mini then put Bryan's kernel on top of it. When I go back to beta 2d, it doesn't happen. I'm not sure what the deal is.

[Q] Random Reboots?

Hello. I recently purchased a SIII from eBay and got it activated today. The first time they booted it up at the Verizon store I noticed what I thought was an unlock icon towards the bottom of the screen (which I am no longer seeing).
Once the phone was activated it performed a system update to the latest OS release. Now that I have got the phone home it keeps randomly rebooting and then it will get stuck in a boot loop. I pull the battery, it will boot as normal, and then it will randomly reboot again. I have performed a factory reset/data wipe but that did not help.
I did search a bit on here but didn't see anything similar to what I'm experiencing. Any ideas on what my issue is? Thanks in advance for your help.

I did the ODIN back to stock (using the ROM that was in step #6 of the above link). After that booted the phone up and it indicated there was an OTA available. I downloaded that (about 30 Mb); performed the update; and then the phone seemed to start the random reboots more frequently.

I didn't mean that everybody has problems when I said a lot and maybe it isn't "a lot" but I have seen numerous people posting on here about there problems whether its random reboots or screen flashing/flickering or w/e it may be and not just here I know a few people with this phone (my wife, father, brother, mother in law, and myself.) And I have had 2 problems with this phone, random reboots and WiFi never wants to connect and my wife has the sim card issue, my dads phone has problems with screen and WiFi, idk what the deal is. That's 3 phones out of 5 that has problems and idk if the sim card issue even counts but still.
I'm not saying this is a bad phone or anything, other than these issues it has been a great phone the best phone I have ever owned.
