The easiest way is to flash ClockworkMod recovery with fastboot and install Rom Manager. After that, download the CyanogenMod zip you want and flash it. Remember to select back up and wipe data. Those are the two toggle options in the flash screen.
It really isn't all that hard.

I would recommend trwp, not cwm
and if twrp, the 2.3.3.0 seems to be the stablest one.
you have to be unlocked.
this is for s-off. for s-on go the same way with the extra steps at the bottom.
1. put the rom on your sd card and extract the boot.img from the rom
2. put the gapps for 4.2.2 on your sd card
3. turn off, turn on holding power and volume- button
4. connect your device via usb to your pc
5. install latest htc sync drivers
6. switch on your phone to fastboot usb (press power on hboot usb which is blue, it should turn into fastboot usb in red then)
7. download the all in one toolkit
8. download twrp 2.3.3.0
9. rename it to recovery and put it in the aio-folder where adb and fastboot.exe is located. put the boot.img into this folder too.
10. press right-klick when holding shift
11. open command line here
12. type in: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
13. on your phone, go to hboot usb again, than navigate with volume buttons to recovery and press the power button
14. your are in twrp now, tip on wipe, and wipe system, data and cache
15. go back to menu and go to "install"
16. install from sd
17. select the cm.zip and flash it
18. after this, flash the gapps
19. wipe cache and dalvik cache
if you are s-on:
20. reboot to bootloader
21. fastboot usb again
22. open the commandline again
23. fastboot flash boot.img
24. switch to hboot usb again
25. reboot
26. done

but you didn't cover upgrading the RUU. Do you have to do this? I tried last night and none of the firmware.zip files would work that were linked to in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322755
I'm on cm 10.0

Yes, you have to upgrade.
The easiest way is to run a jellybean RUU.exe. Relock your bootloader and run the ruu.exe.
Then go through the steps of unlocking bootloader, installing recovery, flashing a rom, flash the boot.img.

Custom rom question.

I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone leaving s-on cos of my hboot being 2.0002 or whatever. And need a step by step to installing a custom rom with s-on. I have installed cwm recovery but cannot access it. I spent 4 hours searching on Saturday, can some kind person explain how to do it?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Put the ROM in SDcard. Turn off fastboot and switch your phone off. Then, hold Vol down button and without releasing it, press and hold power button. Hold till you see a white screen, You'll be in Bottloader mode. Press Vol down to highlight RECOVERY and press power to enter recovery. You'll be in CWM (if you flashed it correctly)
In CWM,
Backup your current (stock) ROM in Backup and restore > Backup. It's not necesary, but recommended, as you may want to come back later
Go to Wipe/Format
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Format System
Format Data
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Then, go back and select Install ZIP from SD Card > Choose ZIP from SD Card and choose your ROM. The ROM is flashed.
Since you are hboot 2.00.002, you have to go through an additional step after that, you need to flash the kernel that came with the ROM, or you'll be stuck on the white HTC Screen. Extract the boot.img from the ROM and do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19071114&postcount=37
Reboot. You're done

Thank you so much!
However I installed cwm recovery from the rom manager but it doesn't show up when I go into recovery, I get a red exclamation point, I press volume up and power and it says something about e something recovery not found?
Also where do I put that command? That kinda stumped me too lol. Sorry for being a noob
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
OK, first you need to setup adb and fastboot. Use this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
Next, get CWM recovery and instruction on how to flash it here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694
You'll be flashing it via fastboot. Instructions are there in the second thread. The command will be in fastboot too, along the same lines.
Feel free to ask if you have any other doubt. Everyone is a noob at some point

Hi again, i'm really sorry for being annoying but i dont get this bit.
I extracted android-win-tools to C and put the recovery image in the android-win-tools folder but what am i navigating to? c:\android-win-tools? Its specifically 4. that I'm stuck on.
This is slightly embarrassing!
this was so much easier on my Blade lol.

No need to be embarrassed buddy.
What point no. 4 means is that you need to move the file you want to flash (recovery.img in this case) to the folder that contains your adb files (android-win-tools, or whichever folder that you have extracted the android-win-tools that you downloaded). The rationale behind this is that when you enter the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, the fastboot will look for recovery.img in its default folder (android-win-tools, or whichever folder you've extracted the adb files to).
So here's what you need to do. For example, if you downloaded the adb files and extracted them to a folder named, let's say, xxxx, which is located in your C: then you need to take the recovery.img file and copy-paste it to the folder xxxx.
Before starting any of the procedures outlined here, first make sure adb can detect your device. (adb devices... sound familiar?)
Now boot phone into fastboot.
Now enter the following commands at the cmd prompt:
C:\Users\UPPY(or whatever)>cd\
Now you'll get the following:
C:\>
Next, you need to enter:
C:\>cd xxxx
You'll now get:
C:\xxxx>
Finally, enter the following:
C:\xxxx> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You should be done. I know the above looks over simplified... but i'm just trying to be extra nice here
I hope that clears your doubts.
Done! Thank you for all your help, you made it so much easier for me. its all up and running now.
Uppy said:
One last question though, where do i extract the boot image, do i put it in the root of my sd card and finally if thats the case what is the exact thing i type?
Click to collapse
After you've flashed your custom recovery, boot into recovery and choose install from sd card, select zip from sd card, then navigate to your rom.zip file, and confirm to flash it using the recovery (on your phone)
But since you've unlocked using HTCDev, this will not flash the kernel as the boot is still locked. You have to bypass this by flashing the kernel manually using fastboot, otherwise you'll be stuck at the white HTC splash screen (Oh! how i hate that screen!!)
The kernel is contained in the boot.img.
The boot.img is contained within the zip file of the ROM you want to flash. So when you open up a ROM.zip (for example Reaper_v1.6.zip) with winrar, you'll see various files inside. Extract the one called boot.img. This is your kernel. Copy-paste this boot.img in your adb folder (like in the previous post)
To flash it, since you've already set up fastboot, just do what you did for flashing recovery.img, and follow the instructions i gave you exactly the same way, except the last part, where instead of recovery.img, you need to type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
now type adb reboot, and boot into your shiny new custom ROM!!
You're done.
I'm getting an error when i try to connect to wi-fi, it just says error, what have I done wrong? grrr.
I think i didnt register the 3.4 boot image, will report back in a minute.
-edit- yeah i typed the command wrong thats all.

I have first read the install instructions from MIUI (saying: full wipe, flash rom) and now I have exactly what you have warned: Phone doesn't proceed, it ist stuck on the white HTC Screen.
UPDATE:
I was afraid of taking out the battery, as this may cause problems, and vol up + vol down + power just rebootet into white htc screen. The only way was indeed pulling the battery (after the vol up vol down power-reboot-gap). Then I could enter into the bootloader the regular way (vol down + power), and change to fastboot, and flash boot.img. Everything is fine now!!!

[Q] *HELP* Sensation stuck in boot loop

im trying to install this ROM on my Sensation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849 (ARHD) - the ICS version.
So im following the instructions it points to here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
So my phone was running stock gingerbread. So i follow the instructions.
I successfully S-off the phone.
Then i did the PG58IMG.zip thing --- successfully updates --- but now the phone is in boot loop?? it says there it should reboot to home screen? I can still get to the bootloader menu but recovery or any of those options dont work?
I have tried googling but all those threads get so technical. I AM A COMPLETE UTTER AND DISGUSTING NOOB.
Please can someone give me a step by step easy to understand directions to fix my phone? please please?
To be honest the same thing happened to me when i first flashed an ICS rom.
What i did was that i connected the memory card to my PC using an adapter and deleted the PG851MG file.
Then i moved on to flashing my ICS rom (Virtuous inquisiton) and it worked out quite good.
But traditionally it should boot back after flashing the firmware. It has never happened to me again.
Thats my experience. I dont thnk tat nething should go wrong, but still the phones at your own risk. Do go thru other posts in the forum b4 u do nething.

Stop everything. I'll give you a simple solution.
Follow this step by step.
WRITE SUPER CID [YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE]-
1. Download adb tools here: download for WINDOWS or download for LINUX or from the attachments below
2. On your pc click on your local disk C: Drive (or D: drive for some) (WINDOWS users: Start > My computer > Local Disk (C)
3. Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure it doesn't create another folder in the adb folder when extracting
Manually put the phone in the bootloader/hboot mode
Navigate to fastboot by pressing volume down and pressing power button to select (power off > vol down + power on)
It will take you to the fastboot bootloader screen on your phone
Connect your phone via USB
Your Screen should now read fastboot USB
1. enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111"
2. enter the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader (Wait for it to reboot the bootloader)
3. enter the command "fastboot getvar cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]
4. enter the command "fastboot reboot"
5. You can now flash any ROM you like.
Quoted from here.

Updating the firmware
This step is MANDATORY otherwise you ROM will not boot. Please take a look at the firmware thread so you can understand what you are about to do.
After updating the firmware you will have the 3.32 firmware with unlocked bootloader. Which basically means that you can use advanced fastboot commands, such as: flash new radios and splashscreens
Download any firmware from here.
Copy the PG58IMG.zip file you've downloaded to the root of the sdcard. Root of the sd card mean that you can't put the file inside any folder. Also, you can't rename the file. Please keep the PG58IMG otherwise the bootloader won't recognize it.
Power off your phone or remove the batt and put it back again.
Hold volume-down + power button to boot into the bootloader
Wait for the firmware package to be found and confirm to update as prompted
Once it completed successfully and prompted you to reboot, pull the battery out.
Connect your SD card to the PC and remove the PG58IMG.zip file.
Quoted from here
.
Click to collapse
Download the zips for SuperWipe & your ROM and put them on your memory card.
Hold volume-down + tap the power button once to boot into the bootloader.
Press vol down to highlight Recovery and press the power button to select it.
Next, select Install zip from SDcard and touch to navigate to the location of the Super Wipe zip and select it.
Once it is done, you will be rebooted to Recovery. Again choose Install from SD card and this time navigate to the ROM and select it.
After the install is finished, go back to main recovery menu and select reboot.
That's it, you're good to go.
This will work, I'm a 100% positive on that.

I assume you know how to get into CWM and flash roms.
1.Connect your Phone to PC and get into bootloader mode.
2. Download CWM 5.2.0.2 for NexusS from here. [Skip If you have CWM]
3. Download the stock rom for your device from here. copy to sdcard
4. Use "fastboot flash recovery <cwm_file_name.img>" to flash the correct version. [Skip if you have CWM installed]
5. Reboot into recovery and you will now have the correct CWM.
6. Install the Rom that you downloaded at step 3.
--->To install, go into recovery mode (Hold Volume Up & the Power button until the device boots to the recovery. )-->Choose RECOVERY
--> Here choose wipe data/factory reset
-->the choose "install zip from sdcard"-->"choose zip from sdcard"-->select the file you copied to sdcard in step 3 -->Choose OK.
7. Reboot phone.
8. Power off
9 Go into bootloader (Hold the Volume Up key and the Power key simultaneously)
10. Connect your USB cable to the PC and Nexus S (I assume you have ADB configured).
11. Open a command prompt, type adb devices. It will show a device ID. If it doesn't use this tutorial to configure ADB
12. Once you are in adb,a dn see the device ID, type this--> fastboot oem lock. It will ask for confirmation, say YES.

This is how I rolled back to stock originally:
Here are the stock images for the NS:

Do the typical stuff, grab all your stuff and then reset the phone
Flash the one you need via CWM.
Once flashed, you'll need to lock the bootloader. This will wipe the device. Make sure you have everything you need off the device before proceeding.
Power the phone down and boot it back up into the bootloader(vol up + power)
Open up adb and type : fastboot oem lock
Should be good to go.

Did you try unzipping the .tgz to see what's inside?

Okay do you have adb+fastboot files? if Yes, I will provide you with stock recovery, we'll flash it, Format SD card, Reflash TWRP recovery and install a ROM... :good:
1. Put the recovery.img inside the folder where you've place adb+fastboot files.
2. Open a command window in adb+fastboot folder. (Hold Shift and Right Click inside the folder --> click Open Command window Here)
3. Go to Bootloader (Volume Down + Power), then select Fastboot
4. Connect phone to PC, Phone should say Fastboot - USB Mode
5. Enter this command from Command window:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
6. you have a new recovery, reboot the phone again into bootloader.
7. Select Clear Storage.
8. Select Factor Reset.
9. In a similar fashion, download Flash TWRP 2.3.3.0 recovery after all this process.
10. Mount USB from TWRP recovery, it has this option.
11. Put a ROM on SD card and flash it.
12. If you are S-ON, Extract boot.img from ROM.zip and put it inside adb+fastboot folder and flash it using the command:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
13. Done.

as I said, you need to format the SD card using the STOCK RECOVERY only. It has some proprietary method of formatting the SD card.

Connect your phone to PC.
In TWRP there is a button, MOUNT SD CARD/STORAGE, press that, then mount the SD storage only (Cross x the sd storage only and not cache etc).
now you can see your SD card in your PC. If it doesn't get mounted, wait for a few seconds. it takes some seconds.
Put the ROM.zip on SD card. and flash it.
IF you are S-ON, extract boot.img from ROM.zip and put it inside adb+fastboot folder and flash it using command given in my previous Process Steps. fastboot flash boot boot.img
bless you mr khan what a star you are thanks for taking the time out to help me in a big way the phone is up n running nice one

Full guide! How to flash pie 9.0 + root your phone easy!

I like helping people... hoping this helps you too..... THIS WILL CLEAR ALL PROBLEMS AND ERASE ALL DATA!!!
1) Go to fastboot mode. VOLUME DOWN + POWER.... hold them long enough until you're into fastboot.
2) https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=817906626617958321
Go here and download XIAOMIFLASHTOOL
3) GO TO A FASTBOOT TERMINAL (using cmd or powershell) AND TYPE "fastboot oem edl"
(MiFlash2017-7-20-0\Source\ThirdParty\Google\Android) You can use FASTBOOT hidden over here in the flashtool. Go to this folder hold shift + right click and click open powershell/command window here.
4) https://en.miui.com/download-333.html
GO HERE AND CLICK THE BIG GREEN BUTTON THAT SAYS "DOWNLOAD FULL ROM"
5) You should now have the flashtool and the original rom, and your phone should be in EDL mode.
Flash the rom using XIAOMIFLASH using the "clean all" function.
6) Go back into fastboot mode using VOLUME DOWN + POWER.
7) THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND WHERE **** GOES WRONG!
USE THIS VERSION OF TWRP FOR HOTBOOT! THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WORKED FOR ME!
https://dl.twrp.me/tissot/twrp-3.2.3-1-tissot.img.html
TO HOTBOOT TWRP... go to your fastboot terminal again and type "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-1-tissot.img" (make sure you copy and paste the file in the same location as fastboot)
8) Now that your phone has booted TWRP... lets get to pie.
DOWNLOAD THIS. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Ghe8mlL-FSyq7ZINk1lm0wC8tcFr_dJS
1. Wipe dalvik cache
2. Install ROM file
3. Reboot system
9) Once you're booted into pie go back to fastboot mode on your phone, and go back into TWRP the same way we just hotbooted it using the commands.
https://github.com/CosmicDan-Androi...P-Installer-3.2.1-with-Tissot-Manager-2.5.zip
DOWNLOAD THIS AND COPY AND PASTE THIS TO YOUR PHONE
FLASH IT WITH TWRP.
THIS ONLY WORKED FOR ME USING THE HOTBOOT PROVIDED.
10) https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v18.0/Magisk-v18.0.zip
DOWNLOAD MAGISK 18 AND FLASH IT AFTER FLASHING THE TWRP INSTALLER.
11) REBOOT AND INSTALL THE MAGISK APK
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v6.1.0/MagiskManager-v6.1.0.apk

So that's the full guide if you're having any problems!!!! if you're having problems with your phone not connecting to wifi... this may be due to flashing previous custom roms.... this can be fixed by flashing this file in TWRP.
