[Q] Poor reception/data quality on CM10.1.2 despite radio upgrade - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Firmware: CM10.1.2
Recovery: CWM
Notes: Full wipe, cache partition, dalvik cache, erased SD card, etc. Closest thing to a clean slate as possible before flashing.
I flashed CM10.1.2 and then GAPPS and then the new skyrocket radio because I was unable to hold a connection for more than 2 seconds before calls dropped. It was essentially unusable until I upgraded the radio. I don't seem to be missing calls but the poor reception is hurting my battery and the data speeds are very slow. Last I checked, I was without a signal 40% of the time whereas before it was close to 0.
Right now, it pretty much always stays on 4G and 0 bars. Occassionally 1 and then briefly at 2 bars inside and outside. However, whenever I get a call, it immediately switches to H+/3G and then I have full bars. So I'm not really sure what's happening. I also seem to be receiving texts on time without lag.
I've gone in and chosen a network - there are three options for ATT in my area and choosing any one of them doesn't make a difference.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any suggestions?

That's what's supposed to happen

I'm supposed to have really slow 4G speeds and connectivity that drains my battery?

That depends on your area and the radio used. I was talking about the switch to 3g when making a call.

Ahh, okay.
I am using the ATT official JB radio. Before I upgraded the radio and the firmware, I had pretty good reception when I was CM10.0 so that's why I'm confused about the reception problems now.

Have you tried the latest Rogers radio?

4G dropping in and out constantly?

I've used both the MR2 and 2.5 radios and both have the same issue. Whenever it's loading something 4G drops in and out constantly. The icon disappears and then reappears. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm in the Chicago area so getting a 4G signal.isn't an issue.

well, i had consistant 3G signal in a known 4G area. started out all good, with solid 4G, then slowly started to loose 4G all together. drop data completely ect. then i could just not pick up 4G unless i had full bars, and even then, it was slow (around 5mbps downloads)
tried a new SIM card, nothing
got a new phone yesterday and everything is perfect now. we'll see how it is after a couple weeks though.
Is it possible that it could be the antenna on the extended battery cover?

Could be. I know that without a battery cover on my phone, I can only get 1x. So you may be on to something. Check the contacts on the cover to make sure they are not bent and getting good contact inside.
I am not in 4g area but I am having same issues on 3g, it will just cut out randomly, it will stop downloads, it will disconnect me from gtalk. I am on mr2.5 radio. Think its Verizon/ LTE issues, but its getting old.

I"m in chicago and have this ****ing issue as well. it's really pissing me off. happens when i tether and load too many pages at once on the computer. 4g disappears for a second or two then reappears, but i can't connect to internet on the tethered computer. speedtest app on phone will work just fine. running the test and tethering--4g disappears. running test alone- a ok. Are you tethering when the 4g disappears?
I was running the mr2, mr2.5 radios on gb roms (synergy, das bamf, 2.1, 3.0 , gingeritis) all have issues. an hour ago i switched to the froyo radio and das bamf 1.8 and so far so good.
still don't know if it's ****ty connection here in chicago, bad ****ing radio (gb ones) or verizon trying to block my tethering. i will get back after more tethering to see if it disappears.
i did also try to overclock, undervolt, change the speeds to no avail.
posted my solution on another thread, here it is again
well i solved all of my tethering problems by going back to froyo. am now on bamf 1.8 remix and loving it. tether works like it should and even works with the screen off. something is off inthe gb kernal that forces tether to close when screen is off. slight remedy is to up the processor speed, until you lose the 4g signal lol.
i think i'll just wait for the official gb, need the internet and all.

Is there anyway to turn off lte?

I am using the the latest sky pics, is there anyway to turn on/off the lte/3g
Thanks

Not aware of anyway to switch to 3G only, but I know gingerbread has an option for hspa/GSM and GSM only mode. I just use a different apn to access atts hspa+ only network, gets me around throttling. Running sky ics ucle2

Yeah thanks, just came from captivate with slim ics, and it had that option to turn off 3g. Just hope there is way to turn it off to save some battery

Use seans sky ics rom, incredible battery life. TIP: Some dont know this, but if you go into wifi where it shows what access points are in reach, hit menu and an advanced menu will pop up. Tell wifi to only stay on while charging.
If i am on wifi and pocket the phone, wifi will turn off while sleeping, it will still use cell data though, but saves battery big time while sleeping. I have had the skyrocket for a few months now and I am pretty normal to heavy user and I can easily get a whole day. 16 hours+ with data on at all times.
The sky ICS rom does allow you to tuen data off completley within the 15 toggle mod that is baked into the rom.
Yeah that's the rom I'm using, but I was just wondering if I can have data on but lte and 3g off, thanks for trying to help anyways

Tests have shown that the LTE radio is on even if using a different APN or 3G Only mode (Rogers GB)

Any idea what's causing this

It's like my radio sleeps sometimes. This screen shot shows no data. Once I wake my phone data reconnects. I don't think this is caused by no signal.

Looks like you live in a so so signal area, the closer it is to green then the greater your signal is. I would think that's an issue with the towers in your area cuz as you know the signal fluctuates often even while sleep.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. I don't understand why it shows no signal when there was signal. As soon as I woke the phone it reconnected to the tower. There's a delay when it switches from 4g, 3g and 1x....This long area of red was probably the phone stuck in the delay between switching? While trying to submit this post I just lost data in a strong 4G area..... I don't get it.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
How often within a day/week does this occur? That's still odd behavior that you lose signal or notice signal degradation while sleeping.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
This happens once or twice per day. Seems to happen in areas with less than great signal, that's why I think it is maybe getting stuck in the transition between 3g and 1x. No idea why it stays stuck once I move to an area with better signal.... Seems like the radio is sleeping until I wake the device.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
It happened to me before. Try to go to flight/airplane mode and back. It should reset everything. I also sometimes press and hold the home button , then remove all applications and go to ram memory and clear it.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
That does work but we should not have to do that in the first place. Hopefully a update will fix the data problems.

Are you stock? if no, what ROM are you running? Are you rooted? what apps are installed.
If you have CWM recovery, i would try to wipe cache and reboot, see if it helps at all?? if you don't have much installed, i would say do a full system restore...
one other thing, are you losing data, ie; not getting text and or phone calls? Also, check to see if you have any battery savers checked. Might be just a method of saving battery by shutting off data until it is needed.

As far as I know I am not missing phone calls or texts. Power saver is turned off. I am basically running the phone the way it came brand new (not many apps, no root, no unlock.... Yet).
Thanks for the replies. Any chance a factory reset would help? My mute/vibrate functions in settings do not mute the phone either... Still get audible notifications and phone rings like normal. Unrelated to the data issue but still weird for a new stock phone.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I'm not going to lie. I don't know if it will help or not. But if you are stock and got nothing to lose it would give it a shot. Can't hurt? Also, as others have said, it sounds ds like it could be because of signal strength. A lot of variables though.

Data wipe did not fix the mute problem. I am very annoyed. Will see how my radio acts today after the wipe.

Just found a post on Verizon's forum regarding this problem. Apparently I was right when I said there was a issue when switching from 4g/3g/1x.

Now before I say this I want to make it clear that I am not representing Verizon or Samsung in any way with this post, I am just updating the users on what I have identified from the test of my device on this reported issue.... So with that said you can take this accordingly..
Ok everyone about the reported connection issues reported, I recently have been able to duplicate the signaling issue reported on my S3 and it appears to be miner for me at the moment but I can say that it is present.. I recently attempted to isolate the bug and I learned that when I placed it in my test rig to monitor the device in the weakest area in my house the software would temporarily powers down the radio for a few seconds that causes the device to loose all connections (Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G and some times also the network connection), this only happens in a weak connection area and it does appear it could be a software related bug with how the radio drivers handles switching the connection from one connection to another.
From the test results this does not appear to be a hardware issue but I do agree that this could be a pain for a user on the border of a 3G and 4G connection because any connection change causes a crash or radio and force restart.
I have reported this to CS and it appears to be a situation that is being looked into and a solution is possibly in the works... Eventho this isnt a major issue for me at this time, I hope to see a update to address this soon.

check any settings you may have done in the "Profiles" option? is that on a option in settings on the stock rom, lol, cant really remember
What a joke. This really irritates me.

This is frustrating. I have lost signal now two times and needed a reboot to get it back. When I did, I was not only losing data, but phone also. I would get this barrage of texts and missed calls.
I am rooted and unlocked, so there in itself could lie a problem, but it comes without warning and the phone appears to be working. Would the SIM card really effect that?

[Q] is 4g working on CNA 3.6.6 Rebel edition Build 8

well i rooted and flashed this rom to my one x and it looks like its only connecting to 3g. i was wondering if 4g is workin for this rom. i read something about a stuck on 3g bug in the development forums but it says it was fixed a while ago. so idk. thanks
I've not had any problems with it. You did a full wipe before?

I remember awhile ago you had to flash a 4.03 Rom beforehand but I'm pretty sure that bug has been squashed out
I did a factory reset yes. I did not wipe dalvik cache or anything else. Just the factory reset. My signal bar shows 3g every now and then but it usually just says h or h+ which I'm not sure what that means. My browser and everything works fast so its not like this is a huge problem or anything. Its just that before I flashed this ROM my phone would usually always say 4g by the signal bar. This probably sounds stupid but if I'm on 4g it would say it by the signal bar correct?

for AOSP
E = edge
3g = 3g/HSPA
H = HSPA+/4G
4G = 4G LTE
This happened to me before on the new MIUI. A reboot solved it.
This also happened to me on ViperXL, it came back on after a few hours. Maybe AT&T was messing with the towers.
Wow OK cool. Well I guess I'm good then. Like I said its usually h or h+. I was really wondering if I was gonna regret rooting and flashing but u have given me peace of mind. thank u very much.

[Q] Tips for Skyrocket in Non-LTE Area

So does anybody use their Skyrocket full-time in a non-LTE area?? I'm back home now for the holidays and don't have LTE here, and my battery literally went from 97% to 37% in 2.5 hrs with 49 mins of screen on and 59 mins of awake time. Meaning no significant wakelocks. Just the radio trying to find LTE. Is the battery always that terrible for you guys in non-LTE? I get a consistent ~18 hrs with 3 hrs screen on time while on LTE 24/7.
What do you guys do?? I tried flashing the Rogers radio and switching the Network Mode, but it does the same thing as on an AT&T radio - switches right back to LTE. I tried selecting the Network Operator but I never get any choices to even select AT&T like others report. *#2263# doesn't work on CM. I tried switching the mode in *#*#4636#*#* but it switched right back to LTE. What gives? (I'm on CM10.)

For a while I was in a non lte area. I had better battery life then than I do now in an lte area. I don't do anything different. I use uclf6 radio, which gets the best signal for me.

Man that's interesting. Every time I come home to PA from Atlanta, my battery just tanks. I can't even make it through half a day. And the only difference is going from constant LTE to no LTE at all. No change in my daily routine. And I've been using UCLF6 since it came out. Now I'm on the Rogers RUXLF3 because I wanted to try switching network modes, which didn't work. I don't know why it works for everyone else.

Sometimes when you move far distances they might have to reset something with the network. When I moved from pa to Florida they did some kind of network reset or something to my old iPhone. Not sure if they still do that or not. Now I travel from Texas to Louisiana and Mississippi a lot and I don't experience any battery tank. And I don't have lte in Louisiana or Mississippi. I get better battery life there then in Houston on lte.
Are you carrier unlocked? Even if you are I don't think cm10 based roms are able to switch network mode. That's if I remember correctly, which I could be wrong since I don't use that feature.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Ohhhh I didn't realize that about CM and the network mode - thanks! I think I'm gonna try out the leak or Jedi and see how things go with that. I'm not carrier unlocked - just straight up AT&T.
That's interesting about the reset for location. I never heard of that. But I bought the phone here in PA, with a PA number. I've just been down in Atlanta for grad school. We're really close with our AT&T sales rep though so I could probably ask her.

Yeah ask the rep, he probably knows more about how the network works. What's weird is, I've not had a battery drain when going to non lte areas and spending weeks there. It actually saves my battery. Here in Houston I hit 40mbps/s and it probably burns through battery 15% faster than non lte areas. I have strong signal in both areas. Usually -75 to -85dBm. So it's not a signal fluctuation issue. Do you have weak hspa signal in pa?

I'm on aokp and what I have to do is search for networks manually and select AT&T. Once you do that, you can force the 2g only option. Or *#*#4636#*#* and select the network mode you want. I'm on Rogers radio on AT&T and my phone isn't unlocked.
It can take like 2 minutes to search when you first do it manually.

As I stated in the OP I tried both of those things and neither worked. I'm on Rogers radio on AT&T and not unlocked. I tried searching for Network Operator but all it does is flash a popup saying Searching and immediately disappears. I've clicked it a million times. Sometimes it takes slightly longer, but still never gives any results.
And then *#*#4636#*#* just switches the mode back immediately after I change it.
