[APP][FREE] Annoyolator - Please review - Android Apps and Games

Hi, I am an amateur android developer. I have a few apps on the google play market, and one has made it to over 10,000 doownloads. I recently created this new app call the Annoyolator. It is based on the same idea of the Annoy-O-Tron device from thinkgeek. I have a randomizing algorithm programmed to pick a random beep at a random time interval. The app will run in the background while you do other tasks, or it will run with the screen off so you can hide it. The goal is for the beep to be random enough that it is hard for your friends to locate the source.
I really just need some people to try it out. I have spent countless hours developing this and I would love to have feedback. I want negative and positive. Im always open to suggestions, even if you just think I could do a UI improvement. However, if you feel negatively about the app, please post it here and give me an opportunity to fix it before giving it a bad review on the market. I have only tested this app on the emulator, so I am excited to hear the results. Here is a link to the app, thanks for the help.......Annoyolator

Pirate Skirmish - My first real game

I just published the demo for my first attempt at a decent Android game...it was developed on a G1, on which it's barely playable, but I'm really interested to know how/if it performs on other devices. If you're bored please take a look.
There is definitely a lot of room for improvement in the AI and general optimization, but I really want to make sure I get any stability issues cleared up before I go digging through that code again, I'm still open to criticism/suggestions, though!
If you are able to get it to crash, please give me as much detail as you can.
Niiice will download now
Edit Pretty good game actualy (oh and btw im first rating and comment :L )
Looks good, not bad ! Graphics could be improved here and there, but it's a good concept ! Looking forward to the finished game.
Thanks guys! Yeah I'm really not much of an artist, I don't consider them final, but I don't know that I'll be able to improve on them much either My big plans for the full version are a lot more maps, a few more special attacks, improved AI, and multiplayer if I'm able to get it sorted out.
Pretty good! Glad to see you developing a high quality game!
PS I sent you a little message.
Has potential, it hangs up my moto droid. Hard to negotiate between screesn.
So how do i get this game on my Hero? Just take a picture of that barcode picture and then what?

Does it hang during gameplay itself or during the map loading screen? I'm halfway through a complete re-write of the AI that I hope will improve the framerate (right now the pathfinding alone takes something like 60% of the G1's CPU)

If you have the barcode scanner or goggles app you can scan that image which translates to a market link, or just search for Pirate Skirmish on the market
Awesome Concept!
Works flawlessly on my EVO. I do agree that the graphics could use a little sprucin' but overall the concept is what sets it apart. And multiplayer would make me like the happiest person alive!
Great game, keep up the amazing work!
Works nicely on my Galaxy S, no issues/bugs, a few comments
- green highlighting around which ship you've currently selected is too hard to see
- perhaps require a double-tap to change ship
- maybe slow down gamespeed a little, it's a bit hard to micro.
You could use an exit method, at least back doesn't work on my SGS. Also, a write up, at least something brief on how things work would be lovely, at least if you don't want to turn-off the average Android person who stumbles upon your game.
I just installed the game on my an Evo and it works.
Suggestions:
- Instructions on how to play, move, goals.
- The two player mode was hard navigate. Attempting to select the second player brought the first player to the second players location. Confirming movement when over a second player would be a plus.
- Background sound, maybe waves, music, ocean sound.
- Instead of pumping up the graphics, keep it simple, but decorate the maps.
- Add a story plot at the intro.
Well thats my opinion, love the work, I hope we'll see more. Thanks for sharing.
Great feedback guys, thanks! I've whipped up a How-to guide and posted it on the site (I can't post links yet I guess, but you can get to it from the market)
alovell83, the back button issue should be fixed in 1.3, can you confirm if you're still having issues after upgrading? (Actually introduced a new bug in the process, now it's a little too eager to quit when the back button is hit)
I think it's time I get to work on a settings menu, since everyone is going to have a different preference, so far I'm thinking adjustable HUD/icon sizes, ship selection method (tap, double tap, long press), and game speed. Any other suggestions?
I'm also planning to add a few new special items in the near future. I've got a couple ideas, but if anyone has suggestions for this, now's the time!
Back to the graphics, the castle graphic is probably the best example of what I'm ultimately aiming for, clean and simple...but throwing in some terrain decorations is a good idea, and I'm sure it will help a lot towards bringing the maps to life.
kinda reminds me of a long abandoned game i used to play called world of pirates online
this game has a lot of potential!
Bout to check it out. Market lagging for some reason
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
just downloaded the game. it's pretty good game, just need a li'l work here and there. especially the animation. and one other thing. you should put hot to play. it took me a while to figure how to play.
Well it works good so far on the hero. And I have seen apps way worse that you have to pay for. So by the time your done I'm sure it will be great.

Any way you could provide an APK? I don't know what's going on with my phone but the Market keeps crashing every time I try to DL Pirate Skirmish... not other apps, just that one. Weird.
Sure thing, here is the .apk for version 1.3.2 just published including the How to Play link from the main menu, thanks again everyone.
Since 1.3.1 I haven't seen any crashes in the dev console, but as far as I know these only show up for 2.2 devices. So again, if anyone is getting a repeatable crash, please send me the logcat output and a quick description of how you caused it. If you don't have adb installed on your computer there is another great app called Catlog in the market that will let you save and send logs from your phone.
Awesome, thanks! I'll report back after trying it out a bit.
Update: I got a "This application closed unexpectedly" within a minute or so... I was trying to attack a castle and I was tapping it over and over. I am on 2.2 using a Desire ROM by mattc on an HD2. HD2 normally doesn't have any issues that standard Android devices don't have, but who knows depending on how the app works... I don't have ADB, but I'll go get Catalog and send logs if I can figure it out.

Why the apps having the worst users' reviews are shown as "Recommended Apps" ???

Why the apps having the worst users' reviews are shown as "Recommended Apps" ???
Hello,
How are the "Recommended Apps" selected by the Marketplace?
I am tired to see all the apps having actually the worst users' reviews be selected by Micorosoft and promoted on the Marketplace.
For instance, this week I see as recommended the games "Castlevana Puzzles" (rated only 1 star over 5) and "Deer Hunter" (rated only 1.5 star over 5) !!! Most reviews of these games state that they are not very good.
So therefore, by WHOM are they recommended ? I wonder. Not by the users for sure.
In my opinion the most important opinion is the customers' one.
MS, please stop 'recommending' apps that the users said they don't like.
How to find on the Marketplace only the apps that the USERS RECOMMEND (not MS), that is to say the ones with 3, 4 or 5 stars?
Thank you
I believe it is based on the number of downloads, which is a completely different metric from the ratings.

I don't think so. My app appeared on the featured list once for a while and it only has <100 downloads to this date!
It looks to be fairly random to me.

That'd be nice. Maybe if devs know that even crappy apps will be randomly "featured" they'll have a little pride and reduce apps that aren't so shoddy.
It's also nice because apps that might otherwise not be seen will get some time in the spotlight. Could be a big deal for someone - I know it would be for me.
Back in the WMP9 days I made a few skins that people liked for their simplicity (they were designed to be "always on top"). After MS featured them on a skins site and they got a high rating they amounted to about half of my site traffic.
A little free attention from MS can make a huge difference for a smalltime dev.

I totally understand your point of view.
Nonetheless, I would probably like/prefere to have an "Apps recommended by users". I mean the apps with the best feedback from the ones that really tested the apps. Indeed, number of download means nothing.
Strange that the Marketplace does not include this. It seems natural to me.
It would be good because:
- it will encourage developers to make good apps and get a high ranking,
- it will allow users to discover and install apps that have a positive feedback. It does not mean that a lot of people aready installed it. Maybe only one or two people only installed the app, found it very good. Thanks to its high ranking, the app will be discovered by other people.
Also, I do not think that apps such as Deer Hunter or Castlevania need to be promoted like they currently are on the Marketplace: firstly, they are mediocre Xlive games. Secondly, better to promote independant small developers that Xlive games developed by Microsoft. Microsoft do not really need to promote their own game, especially when they are not so good.

Keep in mind, ratings can be gamed as well. One vote for 5-stars could result in a 5-star rating for a 1-star app.
A while back I had an issue with the Zune software - wanted to get a list of all of my songs based on whether or not they were ZunePass (DRM) songs, or MP3's I'd bought with my 10 monthly song credits. The idea was to use the credits on the songs I've listened to most but hadn't yet unlocked.
I was having getting the software to do what I want, so I asked how to do it in the Zune forums. When that didn't get the answer I wanted, I communicated with some Zune MVP's via Twitter. They connected me with one of the Zune application development leads at MS (also on Twitter) and I directed him to the article in the Zune forums where he helped me troubleshoot and fix the issue.
One of the things I like about MS is that when I poke around, they usually put me in touch with someone who can directly solve my problem (like the app dev lead).
In this case, he provided me with a simple work-around for the problem I was having, but if you need a new app feature it's nice to be able to tell the guy in charge directly.
Oh, and if you end up taking this approach I'd love it if you'd post the link to your Zune forums thread here so I can follow along since it's an issue I might encounter soon.

[Q] Review for my app/game

I´v published my first app on the Android Market. However I have little people in my direct suroundings who have Android Phones so hopefully there are a few people here who can help me by telling my what my application misses.
e.g. I think my app uses little battery power. So maybe anyone can confirm this to me?
becouse i am new to the forum (or .. well not new, but little posts) I can not put the link to my app here. Search on Triton Bubble Breaker on Appbrain or Market to download.
It is a bubble breaker game. Why I developed it when there are other alternatives on the market already? Because I missed the feeling I got when playing it on a old phone for the first time. Wanted to make it faster, simpler, free and maybe add some extra features (that should not be disturbing the simplicity of the game)
(when you are a coder.. I have (maybe a simple) question. When the game is finished I like to save the Score. However I can not do this from a DrawView? only from the main activity, so that i have to use menu buttons to call saving the score... is there a way to save data from view/drawview? )
Thanks in advance, and i wander what you think of my first attempt building a android app.

[APP][2.1+] Sprite Studio 0.1.9a

Hi everyone,
just wanted to show you guys a new app I've been working on for quite some time.
When I started the project I was working on a real-time-strategy-game for android, but creating all the assets took me so much time, that I soon began looking out for good spriting- / pixel-art- / painting- program for my mobile device in order to be able to work on my sprites when on the train or somewhere not in front of my home-computer.
As I was pretty much disappointed with what the market had to offer (no offense against the creator of pixelesque: that app simply didn't exist at that time), I started work on an own program.
It took me a very long time to actually get the app halfway done (because I have been very busy with university and other stuff) but a few days ago I finally released a first version of it and since I am working very hard on improving the app wherever possible.
Youtube announcement video: youtube.com/watch?v=gbw-I6Z-1w0
The app on google play: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.subgate.spritestudio
If you guys like spriting/pixel-art please check out the app, I'd love to hear your feedback/wishes/suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
Features I'm already working on:
- Color palettes
- Mirror-Painting-Mode
- Layer
- Onionskin for animations
- Spritemap autopacking
Nice App / UI could be better...
Hello isam2k,
first of all i would like to let you know that i really think this app is great and you have several fantastic ideas in there. Nice work :good:
From a UI standpoint i think you could improve the overall experience.
For example the Create New Picture pop up dialog. Wouldn't it be nice if you'd offer 3 Icons for (32x32 / 64x54 / Custom)
Users could instantly choose one size and it would take away from making to much decisions out of the box.
I have tons of ideas for you wonderful app. If you like you can pm me.
cheers
David
@Neosushi68
Thanks a lot for your feedback. If you don't mind, just post your ideas right here, maybe others will have good ideas as well and so they can immediately see what already has been suggested.
Offering pre-set sizes as well is actually a good idea, definitively a feature I am going to add (maybe not with buttons but with a spinner offering some presets).
Ok just had a force-close-report from a user. If you guys try out the app and a FC happens, please do not forget to send the report, this helps so much.
If, for some reason, you are unable to send me the report, then please post me the following information here:
[Device][ROM],
[ErrorMsg],
[Random error/Error in response to interaction]
[If interaction -> Describe last interaction]
[If random -> Describe app state (open dialogs, etc)
Thanks in advance.
Sam
Ok was really busy but I finally uploaded Sprite Studio 0.2.1b. This update basically introduces palettes and also comes along with some bugfixes.
If run into problems when using the palette editor, consider watching my tutorial video first:

[APP][1.5.8] Walle Live Wallpaper social wallpaper app

Let me start with the obvious. Yes, I am a new member, yes this is my first post, and yes I am asking for a bit of your help. I am aware of this, I hope it's cool. I want to come off as sincere and gracious for whatever help I receive and not like I am spamming you. With that said...
I'm looking for some people to try out Walle Live Wallpaper so I can get a bit of feedback, specifically our churn and retention rates so that I know how people are using the app and how long on average they will/think they will use it.
I know, there are a lot of live wallpapers out there, but to my knowledge Walle is something unique.
If I can make a little pitch to maybe get you guys interested:
How often do you change your background? Speaking from personal experience I tend to go weeks, maybe even months with the same picture until I realize that I am sick of it. Then I change it and repeat the same process. Walle was developed to break this cycle.
Walle is a background app that will change a user's home screen anywhere from every five minutes to every six hours automatically. Even better, Walle chooses pictures from a users own category request, we don't limit you to our categories. You have the ability to input any search term and Walle will use an algorithm to crawl the web looking for high quality background images from that term.
For example, I searched "dachshunds" and "Bosnia" just to test out the app and it worked. My phone cycled through different pictures from those categories and they looked great.
Walle also implements a social feature. You have the ability to message your wallpaper to your friends. This includes any pictures that you may have taken and set as your background so it's sort of a form of "wallpaper messaging".
Alright, hopefully your still reading. If you are this is where I'll make my final push. Try it out and give it a chance. Have fun with it. Try to stump the algorithm by putting esoteric terms into the search box. See what your background cycles through then see if you can send them to your friends.
I'm looking for at least 30 testers, effort that goes into testing is pretty minimal. Just use Walle for a few days and fill out a short survey. If you try it and immediately hate it or you think there is information I should know asap, please still tell me why in the survey so that I can work to improve it. I can also just post the survey questions here if people prefer, I'll wait for group input on that.
If you've read this far thank you for giving me a minute of your time. Now let me be greedy and ask for a minute more, I'd really appreciate it.
Google play - Walle Live Wallpaper
Survey - Feel free to DM me or ask on g+ [email protected] or as I said I can just post them in the thread if people would prefer that. I don't wanna seem spammy.
