Anyone had any luck with media sharing via DLNA?
Running the Connected Media App I've not had any success with a PS3 or Google TV (Logitech). I did have some success with a 3rd party app, but the pictures were down-sampled when viewed on the TV (thumbnail res nearly).
In terms of the network, my girlfriend received the Galaxy S2 today, and its AllShare app worked fine with the PS3 (the phone appeared on the PS3 as soon as AllShare was started), although as usual it didn't like the phone's videos being 3GP. (After spending some decent time with the S2 I can't say I prefer one over the other, but I'm seriously looking forward to when I can root this Sensation to uninstall the myriad crapware, plus the S2 allowed uninstallation of Vodafone's apps out of the box, weird).
So I wondered if anyone else has had any success sharing photos or videos to DLNA compatible devices?
My TV is DLNA compatible, although I'm not 100% sure if what I did is DLNA as I don't know all that much about the protocol, so forgive me if I'm wrong.
My TV is connected to my router via an ethernet cable and my Sensation, wirelessly.
With my TV on, I went into gallery, hit menu, select player, it searched and found my TV, I picked it, and then the TV started showing pics in 1080p, was pretty neat.
Even music streaming worked to the TV. I have also successfully got the phone to stream over bluetooth to my cars ICE, with the same method.
I was not able to do any of this with my Galaxy S.
is it possible to dlna to ps3 ???

could you select media from ps3 itself to be shown on tv or did you clicked a file on the phone on galaxy s2 and after that it was shown on tv ???
@alex Good to know, I think my DLNA devices (Google TV and PS3) are a bit too simple, they don't support streaming content to them (like with Apple's AirPlay), but only let you browse the phone's content. It's just weird that the phone wasn't showing up with the Connected Media app running...
Anyway I used DoubleTwist's AirTwist feature and the phone now shows up, I can view photos in full-res, play music, but not video due to the codec used, so that's pretty strange again but at least I have a 3rd party solution.
@B-Man I think so yes, but like Alex I'm not sure how much of this is pure DLNA standard protocols, and how much is proprietary or reverse engineered (like with DoubleTwist's AirPlay support).

Yes DoubleTwist is my media player app. AirTwist is a built in feature to enable media streaming across devices.
Another cool feature is AirSync (paid plugin) lets you sync your music, podcasts and playlists with PC/Mac over WIFI.

Once I get mine, I'll have an interesting test.
I have several 3D streams from various sources in 1080i, 1080p and 720p, SbS and TaB (Side by Side, Top and Bottom) and several DLNA enabled, 3D TVs at work. Will be interesting to see what happens when I playback one of those 3D streams over DLNA to a 3D TV. Will have to see if I can find out how many of them support 3D source over DLNA.
Not obsessed with 3D or anything. Have been working with it since Aug of '09 about 50% of the time at work. Have a US$500k lab setup. Love the source clips I get. 16GB for a two min clip. 8 for left eye and 8 for right eye. 1920x1080 @ 23.97 4:2:2 eats hard disks for lunch.
Just out of curiosity, how is 3D doing in the UK? TV manufacturers here did not get the sales they expected for 3D TV in '10.

Looks like there might be a 720p limit on DLNA streaming. Not sure if it's a Sensation limit or DG H100.
I have had success streaming music, photos, and HD video to my Western Digital Live Hub using the connected media application..
I am quite impressed with the quality... Pics come up slow, however video was very good looking...

It's taking a similar path to HD, actually slower IMHO. No-one is really going out of their way to get one yet. Two reasons I can think of:
1. The major 3D TV provider, Sky, charges a lot of money for their packages but has very little 3D content (they already charge £10/mo extra for HD versions of 3 non-FTA channels). PS3 3D gaming is pretty niche.
2. There was a huge push to buy new large HD TVs with the World Cup 2010, literally everyone I know was upgrading their old sets (at this time 3D TVs were still in the early adopter price range). That surely puts a dampner on sales for a while after.
Everyone knows it'll be standard in sets soon, and without loads of compelling content, and still having to wear expensive glasses, there's just not much of a push yet.
I didn't know this existed until I was playing with the music app and noticed the device selection part.
I clicked, and there was XBMC running on my HTPC! And it worked!
I can stream audio and view photos on my new 55in Sony Bravia. Video is in the wrong format - .3gp isn't supported. I tried Twonky for Android and it's only capable of the same photos and audio. I may try to set up a Twonky server and serve the video from the Sensation to Twonky and then use Twonky's transcoding to view it directly on the TV.

XBMC had no issues with video either.
I work for T-mobile and attended the launch event in houston and HTC said that DLNA was still being fine tuned for the sensation, don't know if this helps.

My only problem with xbmc is that it supposedly doesn't play nice with Sony dlna.

Thanks. If they added hd video format options that included mpeg2 or something other than 3gp it would be nice. The connected media app works well.

You could use Twonky's android app.
I was browsing my local Best Buy store and saw that Samsung had a huge display about their new SmartTV. The have 2 TV and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Fascinate phone on the same display. They were showing a demo whereby the Samsung TV is streaming live TV to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Fascinate, in addition to controlling the TV as a remote.
I know that Samsung device CAN stream from the device (tablet or phone) to DLNA-equipped TV using the AllShare app, but I never knew this can be done the other way around.

Does anyone know if this can be done on the GT7+? If yes, what app do I need to use? I don't see it in Android Market, but I do see from Samsung Apps market an app called Samsung Smart View-Tab, which state that "...The TV can also transfer live feeds to your Tablet PC...".
PS: I am in the market of buying TV and I can really stream live TV to my GT7+, I'll definitely get Samsung TV. Just need to know if the above really works for GT7+.
I know this isn't really what you are looking for but I stream live tv to my Gtab+ (and phone) through my dishnetwork account using a sling player adapter on my dishnetwork DVR and their dish app for android. I can set my DVR, watch any recorded program or live tv anywhere I've got a connection.
Thanks for the info. Yes, I am aware of the Slingbox solution with Dish, since Dish acquired Slingbox a while back. Unfortunately, I have DirecTV and I don't want to change provider.
The Slingbox Pro-HD, a standalone device separate from Dish, have a lot of problem, judging my their forum and Amazon review (Windows 7 issue, device quality issue, etc.), so I ditch the idea of getting Slingbox. It is a good solution though, given I have 2 Mbps upload speed and 18 Mbps download and will have no issue streaming.
I had been waiting for the allshare cast dongle, however it is a bit pricey. If I purchase a samsung smart blu-ray player with allshare built in, can I stream netflix from my allshare enabled s3 to the blu ray player and watch it on my tv? Or, does allshare only allow you to share files that are saved on your phone? I come from motorola and I am used to the mini hdmi port on the phone. I understand that I can purchase the mhl adapter, but I would prefer to share via allshare so that I can sit back and play plants vs. zombies or watch netflix from my phone without the bulky wires. Basically I want to know if it allows you to mirror what is on your screen. If I am searching the web or text messaging on my phone, can it be shared via allshare wirelessly through an allshare enabled blu ray player and mirrored on the tv?

I'd like to know as well, I use the MHL, but it would be nice to go wireless.
I doubt it, and not because it can't be done, but something tells me Netflix wouldn't allow it. Why not tether to your blu ray player and watch Netflix that way? It will look better.

I do not have the blu ray player, but I was going to buy one depending on the answers I received. I do not watch many blu ray movies but I would have purchased one as opposed to paying 90 dollars for the allshare cast dongle. So basically, allshare does not just mirror what is on your phone screen to the tv? If I can not use allshare to watch netflix or youtube on my tv through a blu ray player then I will just buy the mhl adapter. Allshare is very limited in my opinion if all it allows you to do is watch content that is saved on your device. Is that really the case?
Net flix, hbo go, and similar apps will not allow this to work no matter what hardware your running. On some droids however, the hdmi out cable would work, but bad resolution. Have not tried with Samsung's usb to hdmi, but I'm thinking it's a no.

All share is just a dlna server.
Get a dlna bluray player and get playon going on your pc. Tether with the phone if thats your internet source.
Playon will stream most anything over dlna including netflix and hulu.
Man, you've been feed a lot of useless information. In case someone else stumbles across this thread and wants some good info:
First, no app "lets" or "won't let" let allshare work. Allshare is also not a dlna server. Apps have no control over allshare, alls apps are mirrored.
Second, I was under the same impressions you, that allshare would allow multitasking, but it doesn't.
So here is the real skinny. All content is mirrored to the secondary screen with (usually) acceptable amounts of delay.
If you are playing solitaire, or reading web pages you won't even care about the delay.
That being said; if you are trying to watch video content or playing fast pased games that require realtime adjustments you will find yourself in one of two cases:
1. Your app supports a second display over allshare. In this case you will find that audio to video will be in sync and you will have an enjoyable experience.
2. Your app does not support a second display over allshare. In this case you will find that your screen and video content ARE displayed over allshare; however, audio and video are not going to be in sync and you will hate your self flr spending $100 on the device.
Netflix, youtube, chrome, and prety much everything accept the video player built into samsung devices all fall into category #2.
you want your content to be in sync you need to use the hdmi dongle or by the docking station for the note (it has 3 usb ports and an hdmi port).
Wrapping it all up:
All share is good for slow paced apps, video with no audio, and video if you put the video on the phone or sd card.
HDMI is required for all other video viewing/gaming purposes.
I've seen a lot of discussion on here that relates to this, but I can't find a direct answer to my specific question.
I have a Note 10.1 (8013 w/JB 4.1.2) and a Samsung TV that has "AllShare".
What I want to do, and don't seem to be able to, is have whatever is on my Note screen mirrored onto my TV screen. Specifically, I want to watch NetFlix and have the Netflix content (video and audio) come through my TV. From what I've read on here, I can do that using a Samsung AllShare Dongle - but then I can use the dongle to view my content on any TV with an HDMI input. (my TV has AllShare, but it has no other "apps" built in, so I can't just have the TV pull directly from NetFlix)
What I don't understand is why I would need an AllShare dongle when I have a Samsung TV with AllShare built in. Sure, if I'm trying to use a non-Samsung TV, but it seems like if the TV has "AllShare" built in, it wouldn't need a dongle in order to do what the dongle does.
So, the question is, is there a way to have my NetFlix player on my Note show its content on my Samsung TV that has AllShare?
FWIW, what I CAN do:
- start a video that is stored locally on my tablet and have it play it to the TV. It takes a few seconds to get started, but then my movie plays through the TV itself.
- use my laptop and run Windows Media Player and pick a video that is stored locally, and have it Play To the TV. That works just like it does when playing from my tablet.
- on the TV, I can go into the AllShare menu and it shows both of the laptops on my home network, but not my Note. I can click into either PC and watch movies, listen to music, or look at photos - anything that I have chosen to Share from that PC.
So, I also don't understand why I can use my Note to Play To the TV, but the TV doesn't "see" the Note. And, if I go into the AllShare settings on my Note, it searches and says No Devices Found. But, then it will let me Play To the TV from the Video Player.
At the end of the day, I don't really see what the point of AllShare is or the AllShare dongle. Before I bought an AllShare dongle, I would just buy a Roku or similar device for the same or less money.
Depending how old your samsung tv is depends whether you need the dongle or not. Mine is the UA55D7000LM model which was supposed to be supported but that has since been withdrawn. I had to get a dongle.
Contacted samsung and got no help, would've been less painful beating my brains out with a gold brick wrapped in a slice of lemon...
They claimed it should work and gave me a heap of suggestions, none of which worked, and then told me I was doing something wrong.... I was, I was doing what they said....
Now with the dongle it works fine BUT as it connects with wifi you can forget browsing the web or streaming stuff through 3g. It is only good for things already on the tab..
If your tv can connect to internet, just use 'bubble dlna'.

But I want the screen mirroring as was supposed to be available... Using DLNA only allows video and pictures. I want to be able to do something on my note and have it mirrored on the TV...
I want the same thing, screen mirroring, but for the life of me cant get it to work, What's the point of Allshare cast?....I don't get it?....
The best I can get is an app called imediashare, but this still does not mirror the tab, but at least I can YouTube to the tv..

Nope nothing. I have the 2011 ua55d7000lm. It also only says allshare.... As I said, when the Note was released my model was on the list for allshare mirroring... Haven't been successful so I got the dongle. Works fine....
But I shouldn't of needed it by all the info presented by samsung. It was one of the major reasons I bought the note... That and the phone capability....
Yep, I'm having the same probs, cant mirror, I've connected via WiFi direct, and on the tv in menu there's an option that says Samsung wireless link (swl), its connected but not idea how to use it. It's given me another ip address too for the link?

Same reason i bought the notę, for all the compatability reasons....suprise suprise Samsung been telling fibs again....wont be the 1st time though..... The old ue46d6000 series would not display 3D in HD even though they were advertised as doing so......I got an upgraded set the 7 series in the end, and some strange calls from solicitors saying they needed to speak to me.....no doubt to keep stum

Understand what you mean.
Like you i just spent $50 to get the dongle. Now i have what works with any hdtv. Its better than spending $200+ for this feature alone on a small set of samsung TVs for me!
Price of happiness ..
And boy the dongle rocks... i can take it with me to office.. i can connect it to my desktop monitor, and take it with me when i travel so that my kid does not have to look at the tablet for watching a movie in hotel rooms.

Just be aware that the dongle uses wifi to connect. If you have 3G then that gets turned off to accomodate the wifi connection, all other wifi connections seem to be dropped so you can't stream movies from the net to your TV as it only allows 1 wifi connection at a time....
Pain in the bum as a use a wifi HDD to store most of my movies/TV shows.... Can only stream to TV what's on the tablet. But with a 64Gb sd card that is plenty of choice.....
I have a samsung tv also. But like many have said its older. So doesnt work. I have The galaxy note 10.1, Galaxy note II and a HP Laptop with WIDI Build in. I got the Netgear PTV3000 its a push to tv device. Its smaller than a pack of cigs. HDMI out and can be powered from the usb on the tv itself or comes with a outlet plugin adapter. I updated the Firmware to 2.2.4 Which u can get off the internet and this also adds miracast for the nexus devices. Everything works AWESOME. I can stream netflix from all 3. When i stream a movie it goes to FULL screen. I can Stream From VUDU, Hulu and also Stream a blueray movie from my laptop to my TV. Everything just works. The tablet and phone mirror from device to TV. So if i turn my tablet or phone landscape or longways it does the same on the tv. With the laptop u can adjust screen size from the settings of WIDI. The thing is awesome. I take it everywhere. I travel alot so handy in the hotels. Hook it up and good to go. Have any questions i can try and answer. Forget the allshare device this does that plus adds more for other wireless display devices not just samsung. I do admit there is just a tad of lag. Maybe 1/2 a second if that. nothing u can tell while streaming anything. just notice it more when flipping thru screens. Neat to play games from the tablet to ur screen.

I am not buying another, smaller and lower resolution, TV so I can get a feature that was supposed to work with my current 55" Full HD 1080P 3D TV...

You hit upon my confusion. I'm confused about DLNA, Miracast, AllShare Cast. I've been unable to learn if either Miracast or AllShare Cast is supported on my Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1. I am running stock (but rooted) Android 4.1.1 on the device.
I should have asked about solutions rather than specific technologies. What I would like to do is:
1. display/show pictures that are on my Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1 on my TV screen wirelessly
2. display/show videos stored on my tablet similarly
3. watch Youtube & HBOgo videos on my TV using the cabailities on my tablet
I am familiar with WiDi and would like that capability as well so that I can also use my Windows 8 table to connect to my TV.
If you go to Samsung they are out of stock. I hope they are upgrading this box so it is a lot speedier.
If you read the reviews for this device on amazon it seems it may be too slow.
As for all share cast just go to the play store and see if your device supports the app.
I am also considering one of these to add DLNA to an older 61" plasma display. My tab 2 7.0 does not support cast, but I have alot of videos that work with allshare.
I think streaming won't work without cast, but that is a guess.
I got the allshare cast dongle today. I bought it for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 but it does not work
I also have a SIII. That works fine. On the S3 you can connect with the dongle from the connection settings. It has a option AllShare cast. The Tab 2 does not have that option.
Please let me know if you have a solution.
