Could someone please advise on how to keep me from doing any further real damage to my phone?
Here's my story...
Tried to flash Mastamoon's 8/9 build of CM10.2 on my VZW Galaxy S3 from CleanRom7. Used Cwm recovery. It flashed fine but I realized as I was setting up the phone that I lost root. In a panic, I booted into recovery and tried to restore 2 of my CleanRom nandroids but I got an md5 mismatch on both. So then I was able to restore my original 4.0.4 nandroid I made directly after rooting my phone last year. But still no root.

Pls note the baseband version as I flashed invisiblek's firmware zip about a week ago while on CleanRom. I realize now that there was a procedure in Mastamoon's thread about what to do if root was lost but I didn't read it before trying to restore my nandroids.
My phone is functioning right now but I would greatly appreciate any help trying to reroot and get back to where I was. Can I try to flash 4.3 again and then follow the steps in mastamoon's op to achieve root again? Thanks in advance

Are you absolutely sure root is gone? Try to download SuperSU and try to update the binaries.

Look in the CM10.2 thread for a superuser.zip file that you can flash in recovery. Once you boot up CM10.2 you need to go into the Developer Options and change Root Access to apps and ADB.
So is it safe to boot into recovery from where I am now and flash 10.2 again. Then download and flash the superuser zip file? Just not sure what order to do things. Also I know i have to go into developer settings and change root access to apps and adb there. I'm a bit of a noob and just wanna do things in the right order. Thanks for taking the time to help out.

With the phone off hold down home, volume up and power until you see the Samsung logo flash, it should then boot into recovery. You could change your recovery to TWRP through the Goo Manager app if you wanted. Do you have Recovery showing in your Power menu when you go to turn the phone off?

There's no option in the power menu to boot into recovery. I was hesitant to manually boot into recovery figuring I'd end up in the stock recovery not cwm.

You'll be fine, you really can't mess it up, you no longer have a stock recovery since you have CWM installed.

do some more reading. you don't seem to fully understand what you are doing. if you have CWM , your stock recovery is no longer existent.

I ended up in Android System Recovery so I just rebooted. Would this have anything to do with a locked bootloader? I had previously used Ez-unlock v1.2 when I first rooted but its not on my phone anymore.

So you're on a stock Rom right? Just accept an ota update then reroot again.
If not, then odin back to stock and reroot.

Yes, stock rom. I am on the first nandroid I made right after rooting before I started flashing custom roms. I should read up about odin-ing back to stock. But I think I'll take the ota and reroot. Would the firmware I flashed a couple of weeks ago cause any problem with an ota update? Guys, thanks for your time and advice.

Before I lost root, I was using cwm as my custom recovery. When I was finally able to restore this stock rom nandroid, I downloaded rom manager again and it shows cwm 6.0.3.1 as my current recovery. But I can't boot into it as I described earlier. I also tried to flash cwm again thru rom mgr but it gave me an error notice.

No it wouldn't, if you take the ota it'll rewrite your rom, firmware, kernel, and recovery and put everything on the same base. Then once you reroot everything will be on the vrbmf1 base and you should be good to go.
The reason nothing is able to flash recoveries is because you lost root permission. The only way for you to get it back is to reroot since you're unable to use SuperSU.

Try setting it back to download mode and reflash recovery. If you can get to download mode its not really bricked. Just a soft brick.
Look for Qball77 link for how to root and how to unroot. All download files and instruction in his videos are super easy to follow.

Did you factory reset in recovery after flashing the stock image? Use section 2 in this guide for returning back to stock. If all else fails, you can try this one.

What Windows OS are you using? Google has quite a few related result such as this. If it's early in the odin process like that thread, you can just unplug and pull the battery. Maybe try rebooting the computer and a different USB port?

Doesn't matter anymore, I skipped that part mainly because it was optional. Still got a bootloop, maybe the bootchain was the cause?

Charlieb620 decided to be a douche and remove his post telling us how to reset the flash counter for the Blaze for petty reasons, so I pulled a cached version off Google for all who still need it. Here you go:
*I Take No Credit For This*
This is for people who flash constantly through Odin or even CWM. By flashing a lot the ticker on your DOWNLOAD/FASTBOOT SCREEN ticks up. To reset it for repair or warranty purposes just boot into CWM and flash this file.
Your Good To Go.

Are you using the stock recovery, or CWM/TWRP? If one of the latter, do you have zip verification (I think that's the term anyway) enabled? Could just be an unsigned zip.

Does anyone have the ZIP file to reset the flash counter on the SGH-T769? I'm late to the party and all the links in the original thread are long gone. Or at least the name of the ZIP file so I can try to google for it?
The closest thing I've found so far was a "sgh-t989-flash_counter_reset.zip" (different phone), but I'm not sure if I can use it to flash the SGH-T769.
I know it's probably pointless to reset the flash counter for a phone this old, but it just want to keep it neat and clean (plus it bothers me).
Thanks!

the first thing i do is flash the proper bootchain from the thread, this flashes fine. no issues, no hiccups.
next thing i do is flash the recovery from the same thread, which is where i run into problems.
on the desktop i get this.
on the phone i get this.
when i reboot the phone and go back into download mode everything is back to normal like nothing bad ever happened.
comepletely confused and fed up with this thing, i've rooted literally dozens of phones and even the historically difficult G2 and Sensation were not this much of a PITA.
any advice on what's causing my issues would be a huge help.

I would yes, flash back to LK3, and proceed from their..
Best of luck, friend.
try it like this.
make sure you checked usb debugging enabled
open odin.
boot phone into download(odin) mode
plug in phone
flash bootchain as a pda
once rebooted unplug phone.
Close odin.
restart odin
uncheck auto reboot
boot phone into odin mode.
connect phone.
flash recovery.
pull battery and go from there.
flashed the no wipe BLK3 then started with the steps from the guide in the first post and got stuck in the exact same place.
is there any other option?
When you flashed the vralec bootchain you kept "auto reboot" checked correct? Then waited after the phone rebooted and odin said success before disconnecting? Did you run odin as administrator on your pc? Are you using the oem usb cable? I've recently flashed com 6.0.2.3 and twrp 2.4.4.0, so I know they've both at least worked. I once made the mistake of disconnecting my phone from odin when the status light was blue and the scroll log said finished, but now I always wait for the green success status light, idk if that might have happened to you.

no change.
EDIT: as an aside, i can flash the complete BLK3 rom successfully without issue. so i don't believe it's a communication issue.

Aight, and how about trying Odin 1.85? I remembered someone from awhile back saying they used this and it helped them in their case. Here's one such thread mentioning Odin 1.85. There are a few more.
Edit: Wait, I reread your OP. All you're trying to do is flash CWM correct? And it does the same thing when you Odin flash TWRP? How about if you download and flash either recovery via Odin from Invisiblek on Rootz?
Alternatively, could you Odin flash the rooted VRBLK3 or VRBMB1 by mrRobinson? If so, how about downloading GooManager then installing TWRP by pressing Menu/Install OpenRecoveryScript. Since these are pre-rooted, you could install TWRP this way.
This is so strange. You probably already tried but you may have a bad download.
I agree with snoop, as long as you have a rooted Rom you can use goo manager to install TWRP through that app. Alternatively, you can try flashing a recovery through ez recovery. Andybones keeps a thread maintained in the themes and apps section for all recent recovery images. All you have to do is load it in the directory and hit flash.
If that still doesn't work, I'm speculating that you might have a problem with your recovery partition. I'd guess that a PIT file may fix it, however I wouldn't necessarily try that without further input from someone with more experience. A PIT file would repartition your phone and possibly fix the error you're getting in ODIN. This could happen if ODIN is attempting to place the file in your recovery partition, but is unable to properly locate the space for it. This may explain why everything you're trying is failing.

Wait just reboot the phone in recovery by holding power button+ menu + vol up and see what comes up, it might ask you to disable system recovery

Tried to flash TWRP, its not flashing. Not paying attention, i tried to flash a rom, which errored and then now im stock with stock 4.1.2.
Reinstalled Goo, and it won't flash TWRP, nor will it boot in to recovery.
I'm going to try 2.7 via ADP. Anything i should be aware of, or should i be good to go?
That didn't work either. When i try to boot in to recovery, the phone just vibrates every few seconds and wont boot into recovery.
Getting worn out with this. Grr.
Idk if u done this but on goo manager I think u gotta change download path from LEGACY to 0. Then re-download and flash

My path shows as /storage/sdcard0/goomanager/
I'm assuming sdcard0 is what you speak of?
I tried flashing TWRP via ODIN now, as well as ADB.. and Still get the same result.
When i hold down VOL+, home, pwr, i get the "BOOTING IN TO RECOVERY..", but then it goes black and just keeps vibrating every few seconds.
WTF.
Finally got in to recovery.. Release pwr button after first vibrate.. BUT, its not TWRP. it's stock recovery.
w.t.f.
Mines storage/emulated/0/goomanager... Does it flash completely on Odin. I actually never done it on odin. Ived used casual root. Then just use goo manager to update it

I just got my m8 and want to s-off but I'm traveling and won't be able to figure that out until I'm back on my pc next week. The update keeps prompting me to take it. Is it safe to do so? Sorry if this was already answered trying to figure out the best way to browse with tapatalk.
I don't have root or anything yet...

I used Firewater's method for permanent root, s-off and custom recovery. If I allow my phone to update will I mess things up or lose root?
Same boat here... s-off, permanent root, TWRP
The update to 1.55 downloaded but when I tried to let it install it just rebooted my phone into TWRP and that was it. Rebooted back to system and I'm still on the 1.12.605.11 software. Checking software update status shows "Result: Update Failed,410"
N00bs. Lol. You need a stock recovery to flash an OTA. Also, I am s-off and I had a flashback to a stock recovery to flash the OTA . Everything is still fine and then I flashed back to a custom recovery no problem

Totally a noob here, How do you flash to a stock recovery?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
You guys need the stock recovery in order to install the OTA. It won't work with a custom recovery, it'll just boot to the custom recovery and not do anything. You can install the OTA with s off and root but you still need the stock recovery. You install the stock recovery the same way as you did the custom. Adb -> flashboot flash recovery *path of recovery*.

You can install the update, and when you have the chance you can s-off using the weaksauce/supersu/firewater method. I picked up a new M8 a couple nights ago and took the update, and afterwards did the temproot/firewater method and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
I flashed stock recovery and tried the OTA and it failed twice. I can't seem to get it on my phone through any of the methods for some reason.
In order to install update, you need to have STOCK recovery and STOCK Rom....NOT debloated or with mods....STOCK.
Again, you need STOCK recovery using a STOCK Rom.
If you have modified the system in anyway, it WONT work until you put it back to STOCK.

^you can have bloatware frozen and it'll work, just can't be removed.

No need to take ota. Ota us our enemy. Lol. The ota has been pulled an you can simply flash the firmware an that's half of the ota an then flash a stock Rom based off 1.55 or install the backup that was posted of a pure stock 1.55 Rom. After those 2 things you will have the full ota. New radios everything.. flashing a stock recovery taking ota flashing back is not needed.

Thanks guys it was annoying having that update keep popping up and no real computer to lookup info or soff. As for getting updates after roming the phone usually just wait for authors to incorporate the updates. But I did not realize you can't have two recoveries like you can on Motorola phones which is good to know.

New to android here.
I rooted the device with WeakSauce and use Firewater for S-Off. I didn't flash any custom recoveries. I did freeze some apps with Titanium Backup. If I do the OTA, 1) will it work? and 2) will it remove my root and/or s-off?

For clarification, after flashing the stockrecovery.img you posted and installing the update, there should be no problem flashing back to CWM recovery after the fact?
Thank you for your help and your time!

All your big words confuse me...will it work with custom rom's and recoveries?
I don't remember ever having to have stock recovery and stock rom for my old DNA to take an update. Normally devs would update their rom with the updates and all we had to do was fastboot flash the new radio.
