ChromeOS on tf700 - Asus Transformer TF700

Hey guys,
Im wondering if there has been any work bringing ChromeOS to the tf700, ive been looking through the build instructions and it doesn't look to difficult, and with our new kexec kernel method, it should be even easier.
Would any be interested in this? i happy to give a good try at getting it built (im faaaar from an expert but it looks possible) personally i just want a linux + ubuntu-touch + android + ChromeOS multiboot

I would absolutely LOVE to see this. Even if it's just Android / ChromeOS multiboot, I'd love to play around with ChromeOS without having to buy a chromebook.

I always support all kind of development for the tf700 and I am glad to hear that you want to bring Chrome OS to our tablets. Having said that, I am not aware of any reason why I would want to use Chrome OS instead of Android. To me, Android is a much more powerful OS and it is such a downgrade to go to Chrome OS. Nevertheless, I have never used Chrome OS before so I might be wrong (all of my knowledge of Chrome OS is from online research), please feel free to correct me, it's good to know more about another OS.

I would love to see this happen. I was just thinking how cool it would be to use my tf700 as a chromebook. Please keep us updated on your progress. Thanks!

Ubuntu Mobile Internet Device (MID) Edition????

There is a new ver of Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile. Could we possibly turn this into a workable ver for the G1?
hmmm, interesting
it looks nice, the g1 seems to fit the vauge specs they listed for MIDs (thats a new one for me wtf?)
hmm, OS companies fighting over market share on the G1.... IMAGINE
bhang
I hope we can do it.
I think that is geared more at netbook-esque products.
that would be an interesting project to get that running off the sd card in the same manor that people are running debian and connecting to a x windows session via vnc.
The new release (Jaunty) should work with some tweaking - there is a build for ARM processors.

ARM processor is one thing, but will you be able to make a call from within Ubuntu?
Well, it doesnt really matter right now anyways; it's not even out with a stable ARM version yet.

Why would that matter? You aren't going to make a call within Debian either, remember you'd be running Ubuntu on top of Android and tunneling into the GUI with VNC, it's not booting into Ubuntu or anything else. It's more virtualization than it is replacement.
If you get a call, it'll just interrupt your VNC session to let you answer it.
multiboot?
it would be great to have multiboot then. I've seen videos, of Iphone having multiboot, maybe it would be possible to have it on Gphone too?
it would be great to boot from MUbuntu. and, as Android is based on linux, maybe it would be possible to copy some of it's setting to make things easier?

It is possible to have this on a MID as I have seen it done (and held it in my hand) in a group that I work with at my job. We are currently working on putting Ubuntu as the standalone OS on MID's that match the specs listed. There are still a lot of "kinks" to work out around this, but it IS possible to get it going
ubuntu MID edition is geared towards ARMv7 devices, while the G1 is ARMv6. =(

darn, i would have loved to multi-boot into this... looks awesome!
Hopefully there might be some chance of doing it??? lol
the phone stuff could happen
Who's to say that enough is known about the phone side of the dream to do it but if that part is "open source" or not, that phrase is getting thrown around a lot these days, it seems this and things like the nokia n800/810 are only open to things that don't matter much (gui, network, etc) while things like the phone side or the displays multi touch abilities.
Which sucks and looks like it could do exactly what htc/android/tmob wants, it willl keep us from complete OS replacements but who knows with enough time things can be reversed, so I can still hope.

[Q] Dual Boot?

I know this might seem out of the blue but there has been a lot of focus on ICS which I gotta say I love and EOS have done an amazing job and we all need to thank them for what they've done. But I would really like to see more development in the dual boot idea, letting us load up a Linux distro natively ie backtrack, mint or ubuntu. The reason I bought the Xoom was because of backtrack and my current training. I would love it if there was a better way of actually loading up backtrack natively not via vnc so I could get on with some cool stuff. There might be a solution I have seem thread called debian native but the process seems complicated. I will donate to anyone who can give a better solution that works
Thank you
This isn't dual boot, but it's the closest I've come:

I don't like any OS ?! => Linux

Hi All,
Here's my grief:
- I don't like Android at all (it seems I'm the only one here ?!).
- the new Windows 8 scares me
- Apple ? no comment here
So, in short, I don't like those new fancy all integrated OS ... which leaves me with mostly nothing, except using a port of Linux.
=> so my question is now, since I'm thinking of buying a new phone:
which phone has the best Linux port at the moment ?
if possible: I'd like a latest gen phone with 4G/LTE and all the super fast CPU and super fast empty battery
Not sure if it all makes sense, but any help would be appreciated.
I'm not sure that there is one. I mean, getting all the drivers for the radio's and all that fun stuff would be a major pain. I know LiMo was being worked on and developed, but I have no idea how far they got.
Android is based on Linux
Why dont you buy a cheap old phone with good battery and a netbook with Linux?
There is no good and fast working Linux portation for any phone.

Well, what don't you like about Android?
android is probably your best bet, your question really doest make any sense, everything is based of unix apart from windows, so really you should not have a computer or a phone based on your question

Well, I know Android is based on Linux, but it's the end-result that I don't like ... and the fact that I have no choice ... yeah, that's stupid, but I don't want to be forced in using something that I don't like - that's why I'm looking for alternatives ( I had the HTC HD2 and there's some Ubuntu Port on there ... so I was hoping some newer device would have it too).
Thank you all for your answers - even though my question does not make much sense
Have a look at the Nokia N8. Very nice Hardware, cheap and no mainstream os.
`
firefox OS,the best mobile system based on linux
I'd just go for Android, it's not only functional but fun too and you can always extend your phones capabilities with new apps, there are endless possibilities out there.
You can compile and tailor a build of Android to anything you want. Its Linux with java heavily integrated into the framework. Your asking pretty much for the impossible.

[Q} Will Ubuntu Touch be possible for TF700

Just installed ubuntu on my tablet, and still getting used to linux, but I wanted to know, even if pure speculation, will ubuntu touch be possible on the TF700? I am sort of regretting getting my android tablet, due the lack of the ability to multi window. I hope that ubuntu will help me there for when i need it, but Id really like to know if I possibly could get my tablet to do all the fancy stuff they were doing in that video.
For those who havent seen it, here is the article:
http://phandroid.com/2013/02/19/ubuntu-touch-for-nexus-tablets/
Yes, it should be possible. Canonical is releasing a porting guide on Ubuntuwiki 22 Feb 13. I know this weekend end I will be working on porting it this weekend. I know Rabits will probably be working with it also.
Don't expect a whole lot as of now it is still in alpha stages of development. I was reading that the next few updates will be based off of 13.04, which should bring some improvements in speed and memory management. I have been running 13.04 on a laptop and it is a lot smoother and faster then 12.10.
Sounds sweet, very excited

Is there any interest in an Ubuntu Touch port?

Hey there, XDA.
So I've been puttering about with Ubuntu Touch on another device I have lately (Fairphone 2) and attempted a couple ports in the past...
(Moto X 2013, gave away to a friend, Galaxy Note 3, ran into a roadblock with partition sizes)
I got to looking at my Shield Tablet and was just thinking about how it'd be a near perfect poster-child for Ubuntu Touch for tablets. The device is still a relative power house, has great specs, native HDMI out for convergence, and even has OEM maintained device trees and kernel sources!
On paper, it's perfect.
So, I was thinking, would anyone else want to see Ubuntu Touch running on this tablet through the UBPorts project? Any dev support would be especially helpful, as Nvidia's hardware is truly a bit...unique.
Before anyone points it out: I am aware that there is a 'native' Ubuntu desktop port already, however it is awfully out of date and the developer does not seem very interested in maintaining it currently (and I don't blame him, considering how much work porting nvidia's L4T sources to the TN8 must be)
Interest from me, I can test. No good at developing though !
Yes of course! There is some interesting on having Linux in shield tablet. There's linux4tegra but it's dependent on lollipop kernel. So it would be nice having a dual boot stock nougat and Ubuntu for shield tablet thanks for the initiative.
Interest from me too. Also without dev skills, but happy to test

Well, sadly, might still be dependant on Lollipop blobs/kernel as Ubuntu Touch still relies on Lollipop device trees since it uses libhybris for device support. Most annoying thing about it.
Is it possible to request Ubuntu for an updated kernel dependency?
So, this is embarassing.

hah...I kinda put this idea on the backburner cuz I couldn't really get anywhere and ubports/yunit seems to be floundering currently.
Speaking of flounder (aka Nexus 9), it seems that had an [at least booting] Ubports in the past

https://devices.ubports.com/#/flounder_lte
I am very interested indeed. And I can speak for at least two more people that I know.
UBports still seems to be working on Ubuntu Touch, from what I can tell.
How about Plasma Mobile?
