Can Razr M be rooted? - General Questions and Answers

I've tried several time to root my Droid Razr M with motochopper but it fails every time. I'm guessing the exploits been plugged. Is there a way to root this phone. I need to make changes to the tether so it will work with my tablets along with all the other cool stuff that comes with rooting. I found another app online but I'm not sure I trust it. Last thing I need is a bricked phone.

I've already tried motofailed2go just for fun. It's outdated as I understand it and motochopper has taken it's place. However I did try the file you referenced and it failed. Thanks for the effort though.

I am pretty sure you are on newest firmware, it would require you to use RSDLite to downgrade most likely, unless you unlocked bootloader previous to taking newest update:

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? I extracted the zip file to the C drive as instructed. There are folders in folders and i don't know if I'm supposed to open those to the c drive as well or not. But I ran SamuriHL-downgrade and followed the instructions. But step 3 is to root with motochopper and it fails like always. It's not looking good for me.

That is the same build number you have listed in the post above, it did not downgrade it sounds like. You might try running it again, if that dont work I can try to help from here to get it to go through.
You want 98.16, not 98.18 as shown under system version

Build is now listed as 9.8.1Q-66 I read down the thread and someone suggested putting the phone in fast flash mode with instructions. Before when I tried to downgrade RSD Lite would flash real fast and then disapear. This time it stuck around did it's thing the phone rebooted with the new version installed. Problem now is I can't get motochopper to work. It keeps hanging at daemon started or something like that. I'll try again.
OK I'm an idiot. I did a factory reset just to make sure everything was as it should be and forgot to re-enable debugging. I'm now rooted. I did the protect root and I have to proceed to the next step but I have to take a break for now. I'll be back at it in an hour or so. In the mean time the phone is off. Don't want nothing happening. Thanks for the help. I think the part about putting the phone in fastboot flash mode is worth noting somewhere. This wouldn't have worked for me without it.

Root xt912
The best method I have seen for rooting the XT912 is on YouTube called "How to use the Droid Razr Utility to root and restore your device." It is simple to follow but you have to follow instructions exactly. I have used the Utility many times with no problems.

Factory Restore

i want to root my phone but Sprint seems to have patch the root exploit, so i am thinking of doing a factory restore.
does anyone know what software version it will resort back to, currently i am on 2.3.4.
You will still be on 2.3.4 you need to search for the method then reds until your head hurts

This root method works wonders nothing is more better then to learn to manually root your device. Of course you can use the tool provided in the, the development forums, but I personally enjoy learning to do things without the use of developed tools.
If you need help feel free to ask we are here to help ^_^
Good luck don't turn your device into a brick READ READ AND READ FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY HOW THEY ARE YOU WILL BE A OK.

Use the manual method by Indirect if you want to have more control over what you're doing (also does not void your warranty) and definitely read read read
I would recommend at least going through the whole "user" section of xda-university before even touching your phone, it has tons of useful information

Definitely, also just FYI but when you do a factory restore that simply wipes all app data (both user and system apps)

Na i was using you shift rootility tutorial, but i screwed up and put the wrong PG06IMG.zip in the $path. there was 2 versions a 12.7MB and a 227MB one. i didn't realize that i needed to do the 227MB to downgrade first then after it's downgraded then use the 12.7MB one.
so i stopped mid way through and tried to boot normally, which sent me into a boot loop. doing a factory restore fixed the boot-loop and now i am starting over again.
BTW CNexus you have some dead links in your Tut.
You will be on older radios after rooting. Download the ZIP with the most recent radios, WiMAX, and touchscreen firmware from HERE or HERE.

[Q] Phone hard bricked after unlocking bootloader

So it seems I've really put myself into a bad spot, here.
I recently rooted my phone (Verizon S3) using towelroot, which seemed to work exceedingly well, so I decided to try to make a NANDroid backup using ClockworkMod. I installed ROM Manager, set that up, and chose the "restart in Clockwork recovery mode option", which didn't work. I soon realized I forgot to unlock my bootloader so, at the recommendation of a few sites, used EZ-Unlock to try to do that. The app reported that it was successful, so I tried restarting my phone in Clockwork recovery mode again. To my utter horror, my phone did not turn on, and has not turned on since.
When I say that it doesn't turn on, I mean that it gives me no audio, vibrational, or visual feedback, almost like there's no battery in the phone. I've pulled the battery and also attempted to do the fix outlined in a video, but to no avail. (I would post the link if the forum allowed me to. The title of the video is "Unbrick hard bricked Verizon Galaxy S3 running 4.3 Jelly Bean")
Feel free to scold me all you like for my irresponsibility and stupidity, it's probably deserved. Any help will be hugely appreciated, though! Thank you so much!
Edit: I guess I should mention that this is my first time doing this sort of thing to an Android device. However, I do like to think I "know my way around", as they say. (although I guess not enough to avoid messing things up!)

Do what the guy above suggested. Oh just so you know when you are on 4.3 you can not unlock your bootloader. Only root. Also once on 4.3 you can not downgrade to any earlier firmware versions. You can thank Verizon for that.

No. Your only focus is on getting the phone to boot back up. The only method that we have to do so is the bootloader/hardbrick thread by SpryroDazee posted at the top of our Q/A section.

[Q] Total Noob, trying to brick my phone

Hi everyone,
I am new to android mods. I just bought a used vzw M8 running 4.4.4. I unlocked and got S off using sunshine. Rooted with WS2, and verified. Installed SuperSU. Stock otherwise. I have installed the SDK on my laptop. I can't get any devices to show up when i use the adb devices command.
I am trying to figure out how to disable the OTA for Lollipop. Does anyone know if the OTA will re-lock or bypass my root? Can you help me disable if it is an issue?
Eventually, I'd like to go to a different (cleaned up) ROM and 5.X, but i need to make sure the evil red monster doesn't mess up my work first. I have spent several hours searching the forums, and have made some progress. If there are any detailed posts to point me to, I'd appreciate any and all help.
Thank you,
Dustin
Did you install the HTC drivers? If not install HTC sync manager (I think that's the name) and it'll install them for u then u can uninstall HTC sync manager and you should get adb to recognize your device. Ota will not relock your device. It will take off root tho. But you can just flash custom recovery and flash su in there. I'd suggest since your s off to flash dottats s off 5.0.1 ruu over in the development section once you get adb working. It is also pre rooted and will get up and running on lollipop.

Check this thread out for blocking the OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/help/block-ota-updates-t2871520 It is also my understanding that just being rooted will cause the OTA to fail. I may be wrong about that, however.

I did install the drivers exactly the way you suggest. My computer recognizes the phone as a drive. I just can't get it to show up on ADB. Thank you for the suggestion on the ruu. I may just let the OTA come though today to get rid of the message. Then, run the ruu when I figure this out more.

Somethings just can't be explained. Check this out. I have to use my 6 year old laptop with AMD Phenom II x4 because my desktop Intel i5-3570 cant send sh1t to my phone. It's always something. After trying to figure it out for hours, I gave into the PC Gods. I'm sure Dottat could solve it in 2 mins or less.
I only post to let you know others share your frustration. Honestly, if I didn't have an unlimited data plan, I might not even bother with modding anymore. I will follow your post, waiting for a solution too.

Thank you, dottat. I have installed and re-installed the driver. My computer can see my phone, and pull it up as a disk drive. I can open the SDK and ADB. In the CMD window, when I type "adb devices", it starts the daemon successfully. Then, under list of devices, it is blank. Any ideas? Could i have downloaded the wrong SDK/ADB package and need to get yours? I'm really green with this software and Linux in general, so I may be missing something. I'm hoping I can get comms worked out and load your RUU file soon. Can I go ahead and take the 5.0 OTA without worry? I have root, s off, and BL unlock. SuperSU fails to update.
THANK YOU!!!

Thanks! Looks like a lot of work...it's because Verizon locked things down? So am I right in saying I need to use Sunshine to get S-Off then do that Bootloader Unlock? Or do I need to unlock the bootloader?

What Android version you running?
On 4.4.3 and over sunshine will s off and unlock bootloader together, but its a 50/50 chance. I personally used firewater and weaksauce but I was on 4.4.2 when I did it but VZW closed that exploit in 4.4.3.

This one is the one you want to use. These root methods are a bit complex but if you have all your drivers and programs properly set up it will work. Be warned though it will take about 4 hours to flash the system so make sure your battery if full before you start. When all is said and done you will have a debloated and rooted phone that runs great. Because of the write protection even with root you can't remove any files so your best bet is to use this tool to block what you don't want. I was running this ROM before I sold my Maxx last week, it was nice.
rootjunky on youtube
Rootjunky on youtube has one for 6.7. Might work for yours too
