I don't know about anyone else but I used Google Latitude a LOT. My wife and I tracked each other to know where we were to start dinner, that we landed safely on business trips, etc. So when we were told that it was going away and that we had to use Google+, it just smelled fishy. Why would I want to use TWO map apps one one was working perfectly fine (see friends and traffic all at once)?
Well, now it is clear that Google decided to cash in with Google Maps Coordinate. For the low, low price of $20/person/month, you can have all the functionality of Latitude back again!
I know that Google is a business, but Christ, this is ridiculous. Does Coordinate do ANYTHING that Latitude DIDN'T do already? I can't wait until someone creates a custom app that puts Google+ friends on a Google Maps layer.
Yea, I'm in the same boat as you. The wife and I just recently switchted to android, from being long time iPhone users. We both liked and used Latitude a lot (well for the 2 months that we had it)
I didn't know about them having a paid service, not that I would ever pay for that. That's just as dumb as what the carrier wants to charge for a similar feature.
You could try Glympse.

Thanks for the link. Glympse appears to have a lot of features that latitude never had and I will check it out. However, it doesn't have (by design) automatic, persistent location updating that can be displayed on Google maps like latitude had for free or coordinates has for $240/person/year.
I actually signed up to speak with a Google sales rep for coordinates and asked him point blank how coordinates was any different than latitude. He feigned ignorance that latitude was even a thing which is probably his sales team's marching orders. Sad.

I am looking for this type of APP.
A team of us works in 3rd world countries where street addresses are just not the same as back in North America; that is an understatement.
It would be nice to have an APP where I could add a geo point (if that is what they are called) to a map when I go to a location. I could then add a note about that location and the services, etc found there. My colleagues in another cities could also do the same. However, this would all be on one account so that all geo caches could be available to the whole team. When I add a geo cache to my phone it also adds it to their phones.
At the moment if this is only available on Android then it would work. However, some of the team also have iPhones so we would love something for both of these systems.
Look forward to your opinions and suggestions.
Thanks.
I remember Google Maps and Latitude can offer you this very service, you could checkin and add new locations, I don't know about privacy of these new added locations. so you need to look into it... before making it very public.
Thanks for your reply.
I will try using Google Maps a little more and see what I can fiind.
You mentioned Latitude. Is that an app? I searched for it in the Marketplace but nothing showed up.
Yes, lattitude is an app. maybe you should try different versions of your spelling or adding 'Google' in front of it, I'm not certain but it IS an app.

Google Latitude is part of Google Maps afaik. If you have maps, then it should be there.
From http://www.google.com/mobile/latitude/
Latitude is part of Google Maps for mobile on most phones. See supported phones in the Help Center for details.

I'm currently experimenting with different map apps. Maybe one of them has what you're looking for.
google maps...latitude...footprints...locations...places...navigation...and now, download area maps...whaaa?
i am so confused about what all these things are? i've used google maps online, and a couple of times on my phone, and i've downloaded city "locations", but how do i use these - or which is better to be used - when travelling?
i'll be all over Europe come next month, and will have a data plan (actually a mobile wifi hotspot device at 1GB a month)...i want to use these gadgets but really can't tell the difference between them all
any advice? what have you used and how do you use it?

google maps stuff
maps - google maps basically
latitude - allows google and your google contacts to know where you are.
navigation - directions on how to get from one place to another.
HTC location stuff
footprints - puts a marker where u are. i think it requires u to sign in to htc sense to fully utilise it.
htc location - your main gps app. notice there are categories there. u tap on one and places listed will be sorted by how far they are from you in an ascending order.
did that help?
i was using a nokia 5800xm previously and had garmin mobile xt. here in malaysia we have a forum where people upload points of interest and map builders add them in to map builds. when roads get changed or redirected, someone's gonna add them in. i was able to find almost any place in any state with garmin.
unfortunately, these two gmaps and htc's location arent that detailed.
that is helpful, thanks
so 'location' and 'places' is essentially the same thing?
it looks like Location uses purchased Navigation for directions, whereas Places uses free Google Maps?
yes that does clear it up...it looks like all i need is Maps and Places

Hi all,
I walked into a local restaurant/bar the other lunchtime. My phone was in my pocket the whole time. I didnt use Google to get there or anything like that. Yet when I next looked at my phone, Google was asking me to write a review on the place I'd just been in. I had only been in there 30 seconds for them to tell me they were not yet open.
I'm thinking, what the hell!
How cant I turn this invasion of my privacy off? As far as I am aware, I turn off anything like this. I dont have apps forwarding me notifications, etc. I'm very much a phone is there for calls/texts and useful when I need to look something up.
Thanks,
Mr_Moo
I don't think google is keeping tabs on you man .is this restaurant near the place you live or something ? Because google often asks about a certain place/or ask a review about nearby(google gets your location based on your search results or by GPS when loaction acces is turned on)places that's visible on the google map so that the google maps app can be more helpful for tourists or something .
For eg my friend who lives nearby added his home's location on google maps and later I was asked if this was a florist (because he named his home "flower"). Think it was a coincidence that google asked for a review just when you entered the restaurant.
I don't live anywhere near the place.
Similar happened today. I took a photo near a garden centre and android asked me if I wanted to add it to Google's photos of their review part of the website. Geo tagging is OFF. What is going on?
This is invasion of privacy

Never happend to me twice
In Google maps ->settings ->1)turn Google location modeoff
2)notifications-check off unwanted notifications.
If you use Google my business app then you have turn it off there as well.
Ah, there was loads of options on there! Disabled most, thank you. I'm sure this will alleviate the issue =)
IT DID IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's going on!?!

Go to this link and log in to your Google account that's linked to your phone. Unckeck all checkmarks and turn everything on the website off.
My excitement for a Google watch died after getting one. I soon learned that the apps and features I wanted weren't supported, mainly Google maps transit with the watch. Also when I travel to places like Japan, I'd love to tap my watch I instead of carrying around a train pass (suica/pasmo). But Google wallet only lets you do that for Japanese accounts
I didn't really care about about the health related apps, but I continued to use it for meeting reminders. When my watch died one day and I forgot to recharge it...I left it on my desk for like a year. I just found it and I'm considering using it again...but to what end?
Are there any interesting apps being made that I could try? Idk what I'm looking for but nothing health or workout related.
The Google Maps app before sometime in 2020 or early 2021 used to recalculate without a problem if you missed a turn, if you had the maps of the area downloaded and the app set to "Wifi only".
But for well over a year now, Google Maps simply refuses to recalculate if you miss a turn any more, even if you've made sure to take all the steps I've mentioned.
If you miss a turn, you have to stop and manually enter the route again, or else have data turned on and then it will recalculate as it used to. So if you run out of data, as people on set data plans often do, then Google Maps becomes essentially useless as a reliable car sat nav even if you have the maps you need downloaded offline.
So I guess this is a Google decision to force their users to use more data, maybe they don't like people using their app economically in that way? Perhaps they resent people trying to save money and are trying to force you to spend more money on data?
Why are tech companies always determined to make things worse? They always needlessly remove functionality from their products that just make the users' lives more difficult.
I did read speculation online that this is just a "bug" and Google plan to fix it, but I don't believe that. The Google Maps app has behaved in this way for so long now that I can't see how it is anything other than a deliberate move on the part of Google. I don't understand why Google Maps still pretends to offer offline functionality when the reality is it does not any longer and hasn't for a long while now.
Report Google your issue.
What's the point? There are threads on their support forums where people have reported it, they clearly don't care as it's been this way for over 2 years now. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why Google have decided to do this, or what exactly they have changed in their app.
I guess a lot of people just dismiss my views on this as me being a cheapskate who should just pay for the data to use Google Maps, but what about when you go to a foreign country and have no roaming agreement? Just pay the rip off data fees per MB?
Maybe people think I should just buy a new sim card in each country, and just pay pay pay all the time rather than being able to download maps and navigate offline? Maybe that's the answer and I'm in the wrong?

Have you tried clearing cache and data for Google Maps?
Maybe Google made changes to Google Maps to improve accuracy, changes that require data to be enabled to more accurately pinpoint your actual location while navigating.

I'm using OsmAnd+ offline with OpenStreetMap, and I'm very satisfied. Actually, I don't use anything by Google, no Google Play Services by microG.
