RUU erase sd card? - HTC One S

I was wondering if anyone knew if running a RUU.exe is supposed to erase everything from your phone?
Just yesterday I did the Moonshine S-Off again to put a newer radio on my phone.
Everything went well, and when I went to plug my phone into my computer to put my backup on my phone to restore it the backup was already there. The sd card wasn't erased.
I'm not complaining, I just thought everything would be erased.

I did the RUU twice last week and never had my sd card erased(s=off). Yes, it is strange as I expected to have phone "wipe clean".

That may be because youre S-Off.
@OP: You should assume it wipes everything.
(Edit: Unless you want it to wipe everything, then you should assume it doesnt.)

Bricked Thunderbolt? :(

OK I have never posted anything on this site so I hope this is the right section.
Anyway to get to the point, I believe I bricked my Thunderbolt.
I went from Bamf Remix 1.6 to Cubed Rom and then upgraded to Das Bamf 2.0 after I upgraded my Radio to the Gingerbread one I believe. It booted up fine and I love the 2.0 update but it ran too slowly and I could literally see my battery life draining so I decided to switch back to my backup of my 1.6 but when i tried to boot into recovery, it auto loaded the radio update and i must of clicked the power because it redid that. after that my TB would only get to a black screen but I could tell it was on cause my computer detected it and i could see the backlight on. so then i loaded my other microSD into it and tried to restore with a backup from there but now it will only rebooot to the white screen with the 4 options and no way to get to recovery. Am I bricked or am i overreacting. Thanks in advance for ur guys help. love this site!
you have to downgrade back to a froyo radio if you reverted back from gingerbread. Get the one listed in the radio thread on the developers forum or rooting thread how-to that mentions it's for s-off and modified to have root permissions allowed.
You can stick it on your sd card from clockwork recovery by mounting your sd card via usb.
Also, that white screen with the options you see is the bootloader. If you read the options, the bootloader has an option to boot into recovery.
Take a deep breath, relax and hold your panicking for a while and try again
Also here's the radio from the restore to stock thread (this will fully restore to stock and all data not on the sdcard, but with s-off still so you can flash again):

That is fricken ridiculously awesome man. A 12 minute reply at this time. Thank you so much man. I will try this and hope that it works. I will get back to ASAP! THANKS!
Ok I downloaded the file you linked me and put it on the root of my microSD card. but when i boot up my phone it only goes to the white bootloader screen and there is no recovery option any advice?
can try while its rebooting adb reboot recovery
then wipe cache factory rest wipe dalvik then fresh install das bamf 1.6
worst case senario as it sounds ull have to ruu back to stock and re-root ull have to bit of searching for this info cant remeber where i found Ruu but ya it turns s-on so make sure u read alot and pay complete attention to what you do also make sure ur not on the GB leak radio cause wont work with froyo unless u use MR2 that might be step 2 in this senario after u try to get into recovery via adb.
Sorry, I don't really have anything to contribute to your solution, RUU/reroot is nearly always a surefire solution...
however, let this be a warning to others, this is why one of the last steps in a radio flash is
DELETE PG05IMG.zip FROM YOUR SDCARD.

rename the radio from PG05IMG_MR1_upgrade.zip to PG05IMG.zip, then stick it on the card just as you did when you rooted to begin with (basically you are doing the same steps you did for rooting, just not reverting to the old radio, since you already have s-off.
AFTER YOUR DONE AND EVERYTHING WORKS, REMOVE PG05IMG.zip FROM YOUR SDCARD (youll wish you had of if you didnt eventually).

It sounds like it may be coming up in fastboot mode in which case there should be a button in the menu list for bootloader. Select bootloader and it ought to bring up additional options including recovery.

This method worked for me when I reverted. Everything will be deleted but you should be back to working, then get Rom manager, and restore your backup. I did it twice yesterday bouncing between BAMF 1.7 and 2.whatever.

[Fixed :D] Help please! As good as bricked? :(

Hi guys, I was flashing some ROMS, and as I was running out of space on my SDCard, i decided to format it. I went ahead and backed it up on my pc, then formatted (mounted as disk drive on CWM on the phone). After that, I transferred my next ROM to the SD Card, ejected and unmounted it from my PC, and tried to install it on the phone. When I hit install from SDCard on the phone, it threw me the error (E) can't mount sdcard. So i thought, well, maybe the format was done wrong. So I formatted it again, this time out of the phone. Put it back in, same error. Looked for another SDCard, same error. So, I panicked. I looked for the PG58IMG.zip to reinstall recovery, and transferred it to the SD. Powered on my phone to bootloader, nothing happens, it just "scans" my SD but finds nothing. So I panic even more, and I'm now downloading the official TMO Ruu to flash to my phone, although i have a feeling it won't work. :'(
Any ideas?
BTW mounting the sdcard as a disk drive in Recovery works.
BTW#2 I have no working ROM right now on my phone, because i was experimenting with the new leaked 2.3.4 before this happened. I just wanted to try out Leedroid, but since I didn't have much space on my SD, i formatted it.
What happens when you try to format the SD card in recovery? Can you even access recovery??

I can access recovery and format the SDCard. I tried to flash the ROM via fastboot but it didn't work. I'm so nervous I'm just gonna try to flash Stock.
Any other ideas are welcome though.
So when you format the card in clockwork can you mount it and copy a file to it then read the zip file from the phone? or not. You may brick it trying to flash it to stock if you can access clockwork its most likely not bricked
Ok so the phone booted up after flashing stock, but it still can't read any SD Cards. Seems the Sd card port got fuxd up.
Can you flash ANY other roms?
EDIT: I hate when I think I'm responding to something only to find I'm behind everything...haha

Well if you can read the SD Card with the usb cable in clockwork mod it isnt fuxxed up, Do you happen to have any other sd cards or another phone that can read that sd card? can you format the sd card in the android os? read it with astro or a similiar file explorer?
Go to the setting > Mounts and storage then unmount the sdcard or mount whatever is available then unmount/mount again and do this 2 times. Then when the card is mounted, connect the phone to the computer using the normal USB cable and select 'Disk drive' on the phone and then probably if your computer shows the 'scan and fix' option for the sdcard then you're safe! I think It's your SDCard which got screwed not the port, cuz you played with it bit too much! If this doesn't work, no problem, go to HTC's service center and tell them that the card is faulty, they'll replace it!

It could have, didnt you say that you could read the sd card with the usb cable connected when you were in recovery? Check the pins make sure none of them are bent or anything.

I tried to get S-ON back on my phone to send it back to HTC, and now I am stuck on the Security Warning Message. I am S-ON though. But, whenever I try to rerun the RUU, it tells me there's a signature error. What should i do?
This is exactly what i had dude when i semi-bricked
Its the security message in purple at the top like this
***security warning***
Pyramid PVT Ship S-on RL
Did you use Super CID first?
what device is yours, Tmous, EU, voda or what?
Flash the same rom as you had using RUU.exe and be patient with it
Try a different pc, download it from the link in post 1 or here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074559
If you have supercid
try this one RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.35.401.1
thats what restored it for me.
i know the feeling its crap. but atleast your S-on
dude it has to work
run it as administrator too
I have seen a similar error several times in past devices. Usually just doing a "fix permissions" takes care of it. If you still have root, go into rom manager and do "fix permissions".
SN: If you do contact HTC be honest about what happened to the phone. Don't try to lie your way into a replacement device. When you removed S-On and gained root, there are certain risks that you took on with your device. People who take on those risks, subsequently cause a problem to their devices, and then send the phone back to the manufacturer are the cause of having an encrypted bootloader to begin with (Since manufacturers are starting to feel like they have to protect themselves from these exact type of scenarios).
If your device is a T-mobile USA try that one.

Did you restore to stock
install clockwork recovery
then go to S-on?

There's an alternative fastboot method for flashing the RUU if you're S-ON. I can't say for sure that it will work (so no responsibility taken) but the "fastboot oem rebootRUU" command does put the phone into the correct state. If you want to try, extract the rom.zip from the latest T-Mobile RUU and follow these instructions:

Ok, guys, thanks for all the help. I haven't tried anything else, but just wanted to give you guys some more info.
1) I do not have superCID.
2) I am not lying to HTC, because what happened to my phone has nothing to do with S-OFF or whatever. It is a hardware failure, when I formatted my SDCard while inside the phone, maybe it burned the port or something happened to it.
3) Yes, I am a little scared lol.
4) Yes, I am S-ON right now. Just with the warning message on the top in the bootloader.
5) No, the phone doesn't boot up, it just goes straight to the bootloader.
I am as good as a Noob, but ...I will pray for you... Good Luck....

Fastboot unlock cleared everything?

I decided to try rooting my phone, and initially had succeeded using ROM Manager. Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery and successfully flashed a custom ROM (CM7).
However I decided to revert, so I did a restore of the nandroid backup I made using ROM Manager before flashing the custom ROM.
In the process my bootloader got locked, so I tried unlocking it using Fastboot. it worked, but once I unlocked it I lost everything - including my nandroid backup. it looks like my SD Card got wiped.
Is this normal, that doing a fastboot oem unlock would wipe everything, including the sd card? or am I missing something and is there some way to restore?
edit: curiously, it's still using my previous wallpaper in the launcher. that and the superuser app seem to be the only things that did not get wiped.
Yes its normal. Every time u unlock the boot loader it will wipe everything on your phone including your SD card. It says it right when it ask u the yes or no thing. I think. But its normal. Sorry to hear u lost all your data

Fastboot unlock wipes like others have stated.
What makes no sense is how the bootloader get relocked. Simple put you can not relock the bootloader period on the device it self. Nandroid restore cant do that. You either relocked manually or used a one click root unroot thing from a computer.
Of course unlock boot loader will wipe everything including SD card. But I wonder how you get relocked boot loader when you restore nandroid backup.
thanks for the replies. I don't know if it says it on the screen where it asks yes or no, but I assumed it was ok since the first time round it didn't wipe my sd card.
I didn't use a one-click unroot; although I did hit "Unroot" by accident once in SuperOneClick, but that was before I actually rooted my phone.
Fortunately I didn't lose any important data, since I had most of it backed up before I rooted the first time (I was super cautious that time, got a little cocky the second time round since the SD card was ok after the first time).
Is there a way to recover it?

Guy, do you know a way to recover it. I made the process without pay attention in this thing. I already tried 2 differents recover software, but didn't work. Do you know a way?
I don't know the reason of software, because its scan the blocks even if the initial blocks has been erased.
Thanks a lot!

[Q] Bootloop after rebooting

Well I've been having this problem for a while, my phone goes into a bootloop whenever I restart it. It shows the white HTC screen, goes black, then the white HTC screen...over and over again.
The only way I have found to get it to boot up normally is when I connect a USB cable to it
But if I remove the cable and reboot, I get the same problem again.
Any ideas? Has anyone had this happen before??
That may be a Hardware issue. They easiest way I can think of is to RUU back to Stock, and Reformat the SD Card. If it still does it, then it may be a Hardware related issue.

I'll definitely try that, I don't know if this shed anymore light on it but my sdcard doesn't mount through my phone anymore either...happened around the same time as the restarting thing
But I'll tr and see what happens, if not I'll just take it in to sprint, I know it can't be something I flashed, I've been on stock for a while because of my utility

I would start by Formatting the SD Card. Then if that doesn't resolve issue. Format the SD Card again, and then RUU. If at that point the issue is still present, it's time to take it in to Sprint. Out of curiosity, are you using a custom Kernel ? Reason I ask is that I've run across something slightly similar after Flashing an Experimental Kernel Dirty. Meaning I did not wipe Cache, or Dalvik before Flashing. Mind you this was a very long time ago, in my HERO days. But I seem to remember it acting sort of like the symptoms you described.

Getting the same issues. I've tried ruu through both the exe and pg06 img. Tried factory reset with no luck, in the stock recovery ive wiped everything with no luck also. It's read by fastboot and i can issue commands, flashing through fastboot just gives me a sig verification failure. I've tried every method i've found and none have worked. Happened after downgrading to 2.2. I got temproot and went to permroot to go into this. I used htcdev to unlock the bootloader and it was successful. I cant access my sdcard since flashing the 2.2 ruu reverted it to stock and i cant get into the system to disk drive it. It boots for about 3 seconds then reboots. If any of the mmcblk... commands were mistyped or something was done wrong, how would i go about checking or fixing them if thats even possible? Any help or leads would be amazing.

Tried this with same result. flashing through hboot works for the 2.2 ruu, but im still stuck in the bootloop.
I also tried flashing a custom recovery via hboot, but the pgo6img loads then doesnt ask me if i want to update or not. I have literally no idea where to go or what to check.

I was just about to say that, if the name of the file isn't correct, the bootloader won't pick it up.
Yeah i know, i was just too lazy to type it out. I know what im doing as far as general modding and flashing, and I actually managed to fix it. I'm not positive how but I used the unroot back to stock guide for the stock locked bootloader. After flashing it through hboot I tried the 2.3.4 RUU. Still bootlooped but I was at stock with locked bootloader. I then used htcdev to reunlock the bootloader and I was then able to flash partitions through fastboot. I flashed cwm and was able to adb through it. I basically just reran through the rooting phase and gained temproot. From here I redid the steps to engineer hboot and finally received s-off. After this it booted normally. I might be leaving steps out but if anyone needs specifics, just pm me and maybe I can figure it out again for you.

Stuck on hboot and recovery, internal/external storage not readable. Help!!!!

Here is my problem.
I have an HTC M8 with Verizon, was doing an upgrade in HTC Sync Manager
during the upgrade/update, it stopped. I was on android 4.4.3 I believe
I have never had this phone rooted, it is S-ON, Locked, bootloader is locked, HTC Dev does not let me get the token to unlock it. still shows official software in the HBOOT screen. never flashed anything to it.
when i first turn it on, goes to white screen with HTC logo. I can get to HBOOT, and recovery. Odd thing it, the recovery Doesn't read anything on the ext SD card or the internal storage. Already tried formatting the SD card multiple times, so i can't do anything from the recovery but wipe and factory reset.
when i plug the phone to a PC, HTC sync manager picks up the phone, but with no android verision, no Sense version, nothing, just the phone itself. In terminal, ADB does not recognize the device being attached, so can't do anything from ADB.
After researching, I am lead to believe it has something to do with the storage partition, not being partitioned properly or something along those lines. I can't write anything to the storage, my PC usb only picks the phone up as a CD Drive, so i can't add or remove anything from it.
I am willing to pay someone that can fix this for me PLEASE!!!
Again, I can get to HBOOT, Fastboot, and recovery,
recovery does not read the internal or external storage

Does hboot read sdcard?
You want to run RUU through hboot (not recovery), either using sdcard or fastboot method.

Best part is the s-on ones don't wipe /data. They can be flashed by both s-on and s-off devices.
The s-off ones do and are also pre-rooted and can only be flashed while s-off.

Good to know it won't wipe data, unfortunately I had already tried so much crap, even HTC support had me wipe, factory reset, all with no resolution. I was screwed.
I was only trying to upgrade from 4.4 android to 5, using HTC own sync manager, and it failed.
I don't think I will be messing with anything software, Rom, firmware, recovery, RUU, adb and fastboot related any time soon. I shouldnt even know half this stuff, and I didn't until last night when my phone went to hell and back.
