Solved. [Q] The death of me (wiped ext sdcard and file recovery doesn't work) - General Questions and Answers

I have a Sprint Galaxy s3. I was on a touchwiz based ROM. I flashed over to a CM. 10.2 ROM. I knew that my internal storage would be wiped so i put all my goods on the external sd card. When I booted up into the CM rom,I went to my file manager. I went to the "Storage" folder and saw a folder called Emulated, as well as the sdcard0 and sdcard1 folders. I noticed that the emulated folder had the "0" folder inside of it. I deleted it, not knowing the tragedy that would happen. Then I noticed the real ExtSdcard was empty. I died when this happened. Why did this happen? I tried downloading a file recovery, Recuva to be exact, but it couldn't recover anything as well as Recover files, Stellar Phoenix and Dumpster, .Are there better file recoveries that anyone can recommend? Am I SOL ? If anything had to be recovered first, it would be my music. I haven't put anything on the ext Sdcard since it would possibly overwrite the data of my precious files. Is there anything else I can do to get them back?:crying:
Edit- I found another recovery tool that worked at least for my music. I'm so glad it worked.

[Q] Backup emmc .android_secure with nandroid

Hey, I am using Nils Business Gingersense ROM (excellent work Nils!) on my DInc (amoled), and have noticed that it currently mounts both emmc's and sdcard's .android_secure folder, and apparently the emmc's mount is second, so it wins.
The result of this is that my "move apps to SD Card" is moving them to the emmc storage, which I don't mind, but clockworkmod (running ver 3.0.0.7) misses it on a nandroid backup. I can't seem to either figure out a way to get the sd card to be the only mount of .android_secure or get clockworkmod to backup the emmc folder.
Suggestions?
Cheers

more information
For more info, it looks like it was recognized and fixed in cyanogenmod--issue id 2470 (I'd post a link to it, but am not yet allowed to post links (shrug)).
It still exists in my ROM, so I am just wondering, if there is a good workaround until it gets fixed.
bump. Anyone got a work around? Right now, I have to copy files from .android_secure on my emmc to the sd card before I do a nandroid backup, and then if I want to do a restore, I need to do the restore, and then copy the files from the .android_secure on the sd card back to emmc after reboot, and then boot again. It's all very clunky, prone to user failure (forgetting to copy might render backup broken, etc).
Any suggestions?
I have tried Synergy as well, seems like it is an issue with many of the ROMs, fyi. I am guessing until we get the Kernel source code, we are stuck with this on the GingerSense roms, perhaps....

[Q] How do I safely clean the internal sd card?

Hi all,
How do I clean my internal sd card? I recently rerooted. I followed the steps where it is said to delete Dalvic cache 3 times etc etc before flashing the new rom.
I still have old apps/folders on my internal sd card before I rerooted. I backed up my stock rom before I rerooted.
I am now on this rom ([ROM][12-7]TPC v3 2.3.5 | Da_G OC Kernel | IMG Flash | ATT | Rogers |)...... I also backed this rom up and applications.
I have 9.1 GB with 2.2 GB free. I'm running a bit low in my opinion because I still do not have any music, movies, or pictures on my phone. I do however have about 100 apps, 10 of which are HD games. Is the 9.1 GB reasonable?
I do see some old apps on the sd card though. Is there a quick way to delete them all or do I need to go down 1 by 1 and check every crevice of my internal card?
I'm not that concerned about it, since I will eventually get a 32 gig external sd card, but I want my phone as clean and efficient as possible.
Once again,
thanks for everyone's help.

/data and /cache and /dalvik cache have nothing to do at all with the sdcard, internal or external.
Settings, mounts and storage (can't remember exact wording) unmount and format USB storage
That will wipe everything off the internal SD.

k so once i format the sd card storage, it will clean everything out and then I can just use rom toolbox and restore my latest backup with the apps I actually want on it?
thanks.
Once u format ur internal ur going to lose everything. Make sure to copy ur back up to ur external or a PC. That's if you have ur back up in internal. Do titanium back so you will have ur apps and system data.

This! Titanium is the way to go.
Once you have your backup safely on a PC, you can also do it by going in to Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset, and if you check Format USB Storage it will clear everything off your phone (not sure if you're looking to do that--that would be all your pictures/videos/music--but these files can be large, especially video files)
I backed up my apps and settings, I do not have an external sd card though. When I connected my phone to the computer over wifi, using that aires application (forgot name). I copied the backup folder and pasted it on my computer. It stopped around 20% of the way through because I guess the phone was using some files.
Is there a way to copy to pc from internal sd card? Or should I just go out and buy the external sd card? thanks
I used rom toolbox pro to backup. Some reason I get errors with the lite version that came with the Da_g rom.
So my main goal should be copying that Backup_data folder that was created from the app and reloading that up after I delete the stuff in the internal storage.

Kies is the name of the program (I haven't used it much personally).
I'm not familiar with Rom Toolbox, but assuming that it works the same as Titanium it should be placing your backup on your usb storage, which you can access just by plugging in to pc and opening the drive.
I just wiped my sd card and usb storage and restored everything with the Titanium and cwm folders that I placed on my mac (screen shot attached), and then brought back on to my phone when I was ready.
Yes, when I tried backing up the back up folder rom toolbox mde for me, my computer stopped copying the folder around 20% of the way and gave me an error message (The destination you have specified does not exist, It might be offline network location or an empty CD or DVD drive. Check the location and try again. .comgameloft.android.GAND.GLoftSD3H.apk, type: apk, size 4.13 mb, Date modified: 2/8/2012 11:20 pm.). It gave me the choice to try again, skip, or cancel (I just cancelled the entire thing).

Have you tried selecting the backup on your phone & then just copying it to a file on your p.c.? Just make a file on your desk top
If you use kies you can "see" the SD card on your phone from your p.c. Once you have an external card it comes in handy since you can see both

EDIT: Oh, you're saying Kies froze up trying to back it up. I'm saying don't use Kies, just copy the folder to your desktop.
Yea for some reason I can't see the root files on my phone. I googled this android commander program that lets you connect your phone to your pc enabling you to see all the hidden files. That samsung program is more like just syncing contacts type of thing. I was even able to copy my backs to my pc in like 3 mins. Deleting my internal sd card now.

[Q] Flashed 1st Rom, everything good, Then accidentally formatted internal sd

So I finally got the courage to flash a rom after dealing with an extremely sluggish Vibrant for over a year. I flashed the rom and everything was good, then I tried to get all my music on the phone. I couldn't get it on the external 16gb sd card so I figured I needed to format the card. I went into settings and It only gave me the option to format one of them, under SD card "format" wasn't even selectable. So I format the one I could and now notice a lot of missing folders. All that is left is albumthumbs, android, dcim, lost.dir, external_sd.
I'm not sure what I deleted but the phone still works fine.
What do you recommend I do? Should I odin back to stock and then load it again?
U should flash rom again

Thanks for the response. That is what I figured.
Flash ROM again OR attempt recovery using a recovery tool

You could also connect your phone into mass storage mode to the computer and attempt a recovery using one of the many available tools if you had important information on the internal SD.
Cheers,
Stefan.

AOKP tried to wipe internal SD

I finally tried to update from 4.1.2 to 4.2.1 build 5 the other day, and was outraged when my internal sd (/sdcard) appeared blank. That's right, all my pictures, videos, downloads, everything, gone.. Even after restoring back to 4.1.2, nothing.
However, when booting into TWRP and going to the file explorer, and navigating to /sdcard, all my old files appear there.. Thanks to TWRP I was able to copy over my old internal SD card files to my external. However, I can't seem to find the place that AOKP now seems to think is my internal SD. Somehow /mnt/sdcard is pointing to a different place in my internal storage now and I cannot determine where.
Does anyone know what happened? Why does TWRP and AOKP find two complete different locations for \mnt\sdcard? How to I make AOKP point to where it used to?
if im understanding correctly this is completely normal.
youre stuff is moved to somewhere else. cant remember the file path. hopefully someone can psot it up.
check the OPs of the 4.2.2 threads and do a search its orobably pretty easy to find.
Its not moved. When you flash a 4.2.2 ROM it makes a "0" folder on your internal. It will only read from there. Anything not in that 0 folder will not be read. It has to do with the multi user support in 4.2.x from what I've read.

Thanks guys. With your responses I was able to find this:
http://teamw.in/androidmultiuser
It explains the situation. I completely skipped over the 0 folder. It just looked like some stupid temp directory. Case closed.

Please help I'm in big trouble.. stuck in TWRP, Wiped, can't find recovery files.

I was using the resurrection remix rom, and needed to do an update, so I did what it said and downloaded the files I needed, saved them to my micro SD card in a folder I created and named "root". I did the wipe and erased everything following the instructions on that page, and now I'm trying to install the files so I can flash them and that root folder is not showing up! Nothing is showing up in my sd directory. I have two directories; one says sdcard, and the other is named external_SD. Inside the external_SD folder is a LOST.DIR file that's completely empty. Inside the sdcard folder is a TWRP file which is also empty and I'm freaking out now because I don't know how to get to my SD card. Everything is saved to my sd card and I have no access to the files I need and my phone is wiped now and doesn't have a rom installed and I have no idea or way to get a rom installed now. I don't know what to do and I'm panicking. If anyone knows what to do in this situation I will be eternally grateful.
I was able to get into download mode and use Odin to install factory firmware. This issue has been fixed.
