Hi all-
Has anyone used BS player with ripped TV shows? Don't have the tablet in front of me, but pretty sure the shows are MP4 format and play fine with MX player - no issues at all. I'm trying to use "BS Player Free" as it successfully gets subtitles online for the shows. However, these which play fine in MX, have video and subtitles in BS player, but no audio. I've tried tweaking/changing the settings but I can't figure out a successful one to get it right. And after a few tries, the player begins to crash immediately when launching a show, not playing at all.
Very frustrating. Any suggestions/advice?

I have never had any trouble with BS Player, altough I prefer the look of MX Player so don't use it that often. Recently they have updated to remove support for Dolby AC3 audio codec as they don't have a license to support it. You may want to search for an older version and install that instead. I am on 1.9.150.
Unfortunately Dolby don't seem interested to license out AC3 to small developers like that do they really don't have a choice but to either remove support, or go undeground with it. A shame really..

I'll assume that you've tried all the obvious things such as having the volume turned up, not on mute etc etc. Try a file that you know should work, I think if it's AAC audio it should work, and if that works OK then you know it's not the tablet or any setting in BS Player.
Thankfully AAC is quite popular and normally I would try to avoid anything with AC3 because some players won't support it. When I can't avoid it I keep my trusty copy of BS player handy (and backed up). I'm not sure of any other decent quality player that supports it. Dolby only appear interested in DVD/Blu-ray manufacturers and the likes. If you find another good player that works then let me know!
Oh yes - volume up, not on mute, etc. The same file/show works in MX player, but not in BS player which I'm trying to use for the subtitle feature.
If you haven't knowingly messed with any of the settings then I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work. Double check your preferences to make sure it is using HW decoder, and under playback preferences there are options for what codecs are supported, make sure MPEG4 H264 are checked. I guess that if those are unchecked it wouldn't play the video either. You also have an option during playback to select the audio stream. Normally there would be only one, but perhaps it is not sure which one to select and you need to manually tell it. To find that option open up the menu (top right) select audio, then audio stream. Might be worth a double check. I can't see any other settings that would affect it.
You're not using a bluetooth speaker are you? I have just double checked with mine and it seems to work OK for me over bluetooth.
Cool - will try/check those settings today. Will there be more than 1 audio stream to choose from? I don't think there were, but I'll double check. Audio didn't work with or without BT speaker, but works fine in MX player with or w/out BT speaker. I am using one regularly. But when I test tonight, I'll not use it and only use tablet speaker.

In case you cannot get your videos to work, you should consider Dice Player. Out of the box, Dice Player does not support those unlicensed codecs, but it supports custom plugins, which allow you play any videos with audio. As long as you know how to add a plugin, you should be able to play anything.

What? Diceplayer plays the videos just fine without plugins. I've never installed a single plugin and have yet to run into a video it can't play...
I second DicePlayer. All my videos are ripped(ahem... We'll leave it at that.) TV shows as .mkv, .mp4, .avi or .mpg with .srt subtitles.
Regarding the subtitles; You do know you can just get them from podnapisi, right? (there is nothing illegal about that.)
Then just name them identical to the videofile except for the extension, put it in the same folder as the videofile, and pretty much every player plays it automatically...

Update - so When I got home and checked the ripped shows that work in both MX and BS, and compared it to the ones that only work in MX, I saw the pattern. Using a file manager app, I looked at the properties/details of the files/shows. Worked on both - audio was listed as MP3. Only worked on MX player - audio not listed. I don't know why its not on some shows, but obviously there is audio since it works on MX player. However, I could only get it to work on MX player by switching from HW decoding to SW decoding. Interesting and confusing for a newbie like me. Also, both shows are avi files so I couldn't see a difference there. Still puzzled but I will try Dice player next!!

The trick for the subtitles also works for.sub files and all other subtitle formats if you ever run in to them, and they also work on a pc, media player, tv and dvd player this way.
As an added little bonus, diceplayer has a 400% volume boost as well. Which is useful, as the tf700 speakers are not exactly what you call loud.

I am talking about audio codecs. For example, due to licensing issues, Dice Player removed support for DTS audio quite long ago (just like BS Player removed support for Dolby recently), so custom plugin is the only way you can get support for those audio codecs. Videos using those codecs will still play, just that there will be no sound.

AVI is just a container format - the codecs used for the audio and video streams inside the file make the difference whether you can play it or not.
Wish I knew how to open or modify it.

Ah. That's why I never noticed.
VLC (Beta, but works shockingly well) still has support for both those codecs. It doesn't like 1080 .mkv very much, though.

You'd have to re-encode it. If you have an Adobe package (not acrobat), Media Encoder does the trick. Otherwise, try Handbrake. It's open source.

If you want to see how your video is encoded download this for Windows:

Then you'll be able to see how the audio was encoded in a video file.

I bought my Eee Pad this friday, and I've been trying to get some 720p playback. It seems from searches that .mkv 720p playback isn't possible, so I tried some .mp4 720p files instead. Picture's running great, but when running HW decoding I get no sound - I have tried a bunch of players, I think almost everyone in the market. I've searched the forum, but can't seem to find any solution that works.
Dice Player, YX Player, MoboPlayer, Rockplayer - neither of them does the job.
I find it frustrating, since video playback is one of the main reasons I bought this device.
Check the sound settings of the .mkv and .mp4 files. The transformer doesn't do 5.1 digital. If your files are that type, there are quick programs that can recode just the sound, and leave the video the same(quick, as in 10-20 minutes).

Says it's 6-channel sound, so that must be the problem - which programs should I be looking into?

I did actually try MX Player too - I've tried so many players that I don't remember names on all of them.

I have faced the problem with many files, MX Player usually works if I switch to SW decode. Look for the HW icon on top right, this is a toggle if you press it will switch to SW decode and you should get audio.

Yes, correct - MX Player does give me sound in SW decode, but it also gives me laggy video and sound isn't synced properly.
I just did a conversion using AVIdemux 2.5, to reencode the sound to stereo - plays as supposed to now, sound and smooth image. Took somewhat 20 minutes to reencode a 2½ hour movie.

Dice Player. It has played everything I've thrown at it.
I came across mx video player after reading another topic on xda and i love it. It plays just about anything i throw at it and uses H/W accelleration and has a screen swipe for fast forward and rewind and options on screen setup and layout. Best of all its free !

dice player is good. i cant say it plays *everything* i've thrown at it though. most 720p scene encodes i've tried seem to struggle.
Unfortunately, I there is no one player solution for HC yet. Dice player and MX Player are among the good ones but neither play "everything".

I've been looking for the same thing. I want the menu bar to clear. Dice player does it, but I've had better file playback with moboplayer. Dice player's UI isn't as nice as others but they do update frequently. I'm staying with mobo for now, maybe if some people bug them about clearing the screen on tablets, they will add it.
to save your battery, use diceplayer.
SW decoder based player like mobo/mx/vplayer need more battery than diceplayer.
SW video decoder need more CPU power & battery.
have a Question, have Tried standard Android player, MX player, Rock Player and Dice player. there is never no sound with my 720P MKV's (even though there should be) and i have a 720P MP4 that is Jerky as F***.
Also, with MX player and Diceplayer, whenever using HW rendering the video is fine but has no Sound, When SW Rendering is used its jerky With sound.. Lame !

Dice player plays most files using hardware acceleration.
Worth every penny !!

Diceplayer can play any combinations of audio codec(aac/dts/ac3/flac) and containers(avi,mkv,mp4,mov....) with HW video acceleration.
But other players(QQ,Mobo,vPlayer....) can play supported format/audio codec by system with HW acceleration.
All of non supported combinations ( like a DTS+MKV, MOV,... ) are played by SW codec.

New MX Video Player 1.3 is really nice. The UI has been redone quite a bit. The task bar now goes into the dim mode during playback (I think that's new). Playback is great for XViD... haven't tried any x264+AC3/DTS, but it should be pretty good since it is able to HW decode the video and SW decode the audio.
Ok, I've been struggling with this and doing all sorts of research, but I can't seem to piece together a definitive answer. This is what I know (or think I know anyhow)
1) H264 will play just fine from more or less any video player as long as you have the decode mode set right. this seems to be why so many people swear to their particular player (and I've tried so many, moboplayer, dice, etc etc.)
2) H364 is just pure crap because Tegra2 just can't handle it. Something with proprietary codecs or some such.
Now, experimenting with different HD files over the time I've owned my TF, some play and some don't. I've heard others claim otherwise. If anybody can guarantee they can play ANY , really ANY HD mkv file (H364 without re-encoding included) I'd like to know what ROM/app you're using (and I'm sure a lot of others would too). I'm sick of having to pick out/convert my movies all the time.

I hear ya I dont want to re-encode my library either but becuase I cant stand not knowing I have been doing some testing to see what the problem is with not being able to play all files. I have discovered that that the Transformer does not like 5.1 channel AAC audio. I can encode any video to MP4 and it plays great when I set the audio to stereo but when I try with 5.1 AAC MP4 files it no worky. 5.1 AC3 seems to be ok. I too have tried many players from the market and get different results with each one using the 5.1 setting (such as stuttering or lagging or I think it was BS player would only play the rear channel audio) but setting my encoding output to stereo they all play fine. I was on the Google Android Developers site and it stated stereo only was supported for honeycomb so maybe the ICS upgrade will fix this issue? In the meantime I plan on continuing testing different bit rates and audio settings to try and get to the bottom of this. Sorry in advance if this did not help you.
MX player- plays anything i throw at it. make sure you get the Arm7 codec pack too.

I like very much the MX player and it is true it plays mkr videos fine but I do not have sound... I have the ARMv7 codec pack (only this one) do you get sound?
Instead, to play and hear mkv I use DicePlayer Ad. with Dice player plugin for tegra2.

The problem with this is that most players out there only let you use one decoding mode for both video AND audio. what player lets you do what you're saying?

Mx video with the codec pack as said previously.
I'll be sure to try it once I get home.
MX player will play the movies just fine but the issue is with the audio. The Transformer has a problem playing audio encoded with 5.1 & 6.1.

I got my tf300 yesterday and it great except for one thing. I get no sound when i play my mkv 720 movies or series? I have tried both streaming and local. Tried diceplayer, the built in player and moboplayer without success. MX player worked when i turned of h/w and used s/w instead but then the movies "lagged". Cant get it to work, Anyone have a clue what i can do to make it work?

MX will play them via HW but you need to click the sound key next to the HW/SW button and select the other audio track. Worked for me.

I have had good results using BS player lite. And it is cool because you can change brightness by swiping up and down in the left side of the screen and change volume the same way on the right

use dice player , i can stream 1080p movies from my nmt perfect
I was having the audio issues too with MKVs. Switched over to BS Player. All Be Good.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD VLC PLAYER FOR ANDROID!
VLC is still in development, and apks have not been released. If you find a VLC apk, it is not real or it is based on very early, probably buggy code. One person that mentioned having it said that s/he had very intrusive ads. Judging by all other VLC releases on every other platform, the real VLC for Android will not have ads, or at least not obnoxious, intrusive ads.
Diceplayer plays 1080p nicely, as long as you don't got dual audio.
Glad to hear MX player can handle different audiostreams! Now i can get my anime on!
I'll guess i will use MX or bsplayer then. I just find it a bit odd that the same files plays with no problem on my galaxy S2 with dice player..

Absolute EASIEST SOLUTION!!!!!
Im running serviio from my pc and typically steam to my samsung tv's
But the easiest solution to stream directly to my s3 (i747 aokp task650)
Is:
Download and install these two apps
1.Bubble upnp https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp
2. Joe VLC https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=the.joevlc
Ive used mx and bs in the past, but this solution is just too easy and fast...
P. S. Ive streamed everything from small avi family guy episodes to 15gb mkv bluray files and this setup is boss..
Only issues i found was minute pixelation when in full screen mode on large files 12gb+ and some buffering when i jump around in said video but other than that its awesome.....
Enabling hw decoding in JoeVlc app takes care of any pixel issues but eats battery...

I've come from a lot of Samsung devices, and I decided to jump that boat as soon as I was no longer able to install CM on the Note III.
I have a Samba/FTP server, and I like to stream videos from Samba to my phone, like all the time, like 90% of the videos are h.264 mkv. I used DicePlayer on my Note III to stream, and it was pretty awesome. When I tried this on my OPO, it wouldn't work, presumably because the OPO doesn't have the proper codecs, so I went to the settings in Diceplayer and changed the setting for mkv to play under "software player" instead of default; This worked, but I only got like 2 FPS, literally. So I rolled my eyes and went and got VLC. VLC can't open network folders, so I had to use some other obnoxious app to open the files. This works, but its so crappy compared to Diceplayer, it skips/stops every minute or so.
I am wondering if anyone knows any way that I can get it all working with Diceplayer, or if there is a better app that I can use that works just as well. I don't know much about this kind of stuff, but it seems to me that the OPO doesn't have the proper codecs, and Diceplayer doesn't work well enough with the phone that it can make up for lack of said codecs.
Try using MX player. It runs everything and can use hardware and software codecs. It can also stream from a network though I have never used that feature.

I think I tried that one on my Note, it works, but its buggy, and to stream you have to open it via url which is annoying. But I will try it.
Hi, how it works?
I have problem with playing 720p .mkv movies (for example The.Flash.2014.S01E06.720p.HDTV.X265.mkv ).
It plays video slower than audio ( there is one second of audio freeze every five seconds). I have tried to install additional codecs, but it didn't help. It plays on SW decoder, HW/HW+ shows only error and switch to SW.
Also try to install VLC player, but it didn't work too.
480p mkv files are played ok, even via WiFi.
OPO and MX player are actual, phone isn't rooted.
