I'm looking for an entry level android phone.
I've narrowed down my choices to a couple of units.
One of the unit has Android 2.1 with HVGA resolution.
The other unit has Android 2.2 with QVGA resolution.
I understand that both os version and screen resolution has some effects and limitations to the type of apps you can install.
My question is... Which one is more important to take advantage of the maximum number of apps availability?
Do more apps require 2.2? Or do more apps require HVGA?
As you can see, i can't have both. So i'll have to choose between the two. Please help to give me an idea on which feature i should prioritize.
Thanks.
Most apps require 2.1 upward these days. I do not recall seeing anything that won't run on 2.1 that will on 2.2 (2.3 does though).
Most common screen res is 480x800 which is what 98% of apps aim for when developing and then devs amend the apps afterwards for other sizes (not always amended though so this screen size is the best for droid - also moto tend to use 480x854 but believe this can run most 480x800 apps?)
I believe 240x320 is the next common screen res so this would be mt second choice and have more compatibility than all others (bar 480x800).
Higher resolution, root it, flash cm. Android 2.3
I'd go with the HVGA resolution although qVGA isn't bad at all. The reason for HVGA: some of the apps on the market don't show if you have a qVGA display.
Personally though, I have the X10 mini pro (qVGA). Love the small size that's why I'm sticking to it ATM.There is a hacked market on XDA which allows me to see the apps which require HVGA resolution so I get the best of both worlds. Some of the HVGA apps aren't customized for qVGA but are usable.

***** Awesome !!
***** Great launcher
***** We have a newcomer!
Try it now for free! This fast, fluid and power friendly custom home screen makes low-end Android phones feel like high-end and adds realistic 3D effects into all devices. Vire Launcher previews some cool features, such as real-time lighting, 3D transitions and automatic theming of all UI elements, including widgets and icons.
Vire Launcher supports features such as dynamic grid, widget resize, screen manager and folder support – even with older Android versions. You can test out the multi-functional Vire Clock by swiping it down from the clock area and adding application shortcuts and widgets to the revealed panel area.
This is a beginning of how our technology changes the barriers of icon-based thinking. We can combine any 3D object and UI element together and freely place them using innovations such as Vire physics/FX/layout engines, software MRT and Virtual Window Manager. Our UI engine is designed from ground up for multi-core support and load-balancing. As it includes tomorrows atomic object architecture and design, it is fully packed to be future-proof.
Stay tuned for eye-opening launchers!

Hi all, I'm the CTO of Vire Labs Ltd.
First, thanks to all of you for all the good feedback, it's very valuable to us! Keep them coming.
We are actively working on reducing the memory consumption of the launcher, and will keep updating the beta launcher at Google Play. That being said, 55 to 60mb seems a bit high and we usually see less than that. It would help if you could give more details about your phone, such as how many applications you have installed, and the resolution of the display. Bot these factor into how much texture memory we are going to need at peak memory usage.
The "own order" feature is a good suggestion and we'll put it to our work queue! While the application window of Vire Launcher doesn't yet allow user to freely order the applications, one can stow away icons in the panel area of the included Vire Clock. Just swipe down from the metal clock and it reveals a panel area you can place your icons and widgets to. The application window currently support sorting alphabetically (A-Z, Z-A), as well as having four categories for apps (All, User installed, Most frequently used, and Recently used).

Hi Jani,
Thank you for sharing this with the community. I have to say that I am quite impressed by this launcher. Overall fluidity and speed are very nice indeed. I can confirm the high RAM consumption of the launcher (I just checked on both my Xperia T and my EVO 3D, and they both clocked about 66 MB being used). While I do know that this is a beta version, I did spot a few things:
* Transition animations of Fade and Cube (both in and out) are almost identical. You guys should consider either taking a set out.
* Under Settings > UI Settings under both entries for theme and style, it reads "switch theme" and "switch style" respectively. It would be more useful to say what you currently have active and simply relabel the main line as "Change Launcher Themes" and "Change Home Transition Style".
* Ability to create folders is gone. Now, I personally don't use this but it is always nice to have such an option.
* There is a small lag/delay when opening apps (maybe a quarter of a second or so). I am trying this in my Xperia T and the stock launcher has 0 lag. This is not that big of an issue but it is a bit noticeable.
I read your site back and forth as well as the market page. You mentioned Stereoscopic 3D. Does this mean that it will utilize the autostereoscopic screen of the EVO 3D and the Optimus 3D?
Also, unless I missed it somehow, the only multitouch support enabled is within the Cube Free transition, which allows you to manipulate the cube...
I also see that a bunch of features and widgets are still "in the works", so I guess I will have to wait a tad for those
Great job and keep an eye on the Portal

Thanks for the good feedback!
Having folder support is certainly something we will be adding, as well as the ability to resize widgets.
By lag when opening apps, do you refer to opening the application window, or launching an application? We're aware of lag when the application window is first opened, and we have a fix for this in the pipeline. If you refer to launching an application, there's a small delay applied due to animations involved when starting an app. We might add an option to disable the animations or the delay, though.

It means the engine behind the launcher can be used to render stereoscopic content, but currently we have not utilized it in the launcher itself.

Nice launcher but I think battery life will be drastically reduced. The accelerometer is in constant use for that nice clock effect. That will drain a lot of battery.
Re: [App][2.2+]Vire Launcher Beta[14feb]
Tried it for a short time and noticed two things immediately. The stock launcher and the one I use (Nova) usually take about 30 - 40 Mb of RAM on my device. This launcher used more than 50 Mb. It also felt like everything was just a little bit slower, device felt like if was lagging in general. This was on a Motorola Razr M. I do like the outline icons.

This launcher is working great on my GS3 and looks amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing what gets added in the future. Are there plans for resizing widgets and changing the amount of rows and columns in the screens?
Just installed it. Will give you a detailed feed back later on. So far there is no lag observed.
One feature request: Widget Import from other Launchers
Device: Saga
ROM: AOKP unofficial Saga builds by djpbx http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115573
Update:
The Cube transition effects (all 3) seemed a bit sluggish, rest trasition effects are smooth. Okay I know, Desire S is prehistoric when compared to current devices. But still, its not that bad .
Everything else working fine, as already requested - would love to see resizing of Widgets. Rebooted a few times, no problem (BTW I have uninstalled the default launcher).
it looks great on my htc desire z
thanx:laugh:
Just saw this thread, seams to be a nice piece of work. Installing, coming back with feedback.

it is really an amazing launcher..but its eating a lot of ram on my gsmini
love the looks and ui of this launcher...i know its still in beta, just add a few more features such as swipe up and down gestures, create folder of apps in home screen and docks and perhaps a customize transparent for status bar :fingers-crossed: this will be my daily launcher. you gotta love the crystal transition and the clock applets :good:
Hello everybody, and before all, sory for my english
The main objetive of this thread is to provide a guide to increase performance on high density screen GPU bound devices, for example, the nexus 10.
The last year android devices start shiping with very high definition screens, but without the necesary GPU muscle to make them work good.
Since I was a PC gamer, I know the terrible impact of high definition on the gaming performance, and, on this screen size, this is a useless impact, since the extra resolution are practicaly unperceptible.
The past week I spend a lot of time trying to change my device's resolution (a nexus 7) and with kernel modding, it is posible, but don't are great since I only play 1/3 of the devices usage, and the 1280x800 resolution are great for chat, browsing (or posting on the forum ).
Finally I find a great program that allow me to temporary change the display resolution of my device, and with the free version I was allowed to change resolution to 720x450, and on gaming performance, that was a GREAT performance updrade, even, with the wuality sacrifice (and on a 7 inch display, this wasn't a great lose.
In order to do that, I need to disable soft keys, since they bug A LOT with the resolution change, and to use a custom launcher because the default launcher bug too (go launcher ex is my favourite and the only one I test).
So, I leave a guide on how to prepare your device to use this mod to increase gaming performance, and to provide help to everyone who want it.
First of all, you NEED to be rooted.
Now, start with the device preparing.
Wee need a soft keys replacement, I recomend this one, work great and are really simple to customize.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jun.ace.piecontrol
Now, you need to remove the soft keys in order to gain extra screen space and to protect yourself from potential bugs on the user interface.
To do that, you need to edit your build.prop with an editor or manually with a text editor and add this line.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Now, on the next boot your device have the soft keys disabled.
To protect the status bar from being bugged, we need to change the lcd density of our display in order to allow a phone status bar (the phablet one bug on low resolution displays, and on tablets without sofkeys, we need a status bar.
To do that, we need to edit from the build.prop editor the "ro.sf.lcd_density" parameter and set it to something above 214 (nexus 7 have 213 and it enable the phablet interface, and on 214 it enable a full phone interface, but with small icons and more work space, you need to test and find the most usefull dpi for your device)
Now, we need to install the "magic app", and start testing resolutions and trying to find the most confortable for us, I have the paid version and use on the nexus 7 (16:10 or 8:5) 480x768 since it allow GREAT performance improvement and a good image quality for my screen size.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer
One example of a game that work GREAT with this trick is N.O.V.A. 3, on the tegra 3 plataform it is almost inplayable, and with the trick, on my nexus 7, it looks like this.
So, start testing this, and post your results, configs and devices.
Help us resolving the screen resolution fragmentation on devices!
And mods, please, help the post with a good language correction XD
Edit: Changed the APK link, to a new one, the new app have onscreen buttons to fix the navbar problems, so, pie controls are no longer needed, I leave the link here onlfy for people to know another alternative, thx for NoMone Devs!
i am planning to buy a 7 or 8" android with high resolution and was a bit worried about gaming performance because of the high resolution.. can you post a video of the performance gain plz?
Whoa! I might give this a go when I get home. Good Job.
i am interested for feedbacks in other heavy games like modern combat 4
this!
what android device and other mobile devices lacks.
there's no setting to set the resolution!
people out there always suggest me to change the dpi, but hell no!
"dpi" is not physical resolution, it just changing icon and other ui element to small or big.
this terms confuse many people.
they think DPI is the screen resolution.
and.... i just cannot understand the hype,
many vendors put high res 1080p on 5" device?
what the heck!? is it necessary?
what's next? ultra 4K res on 4" screen?
come on.. it's unnecesary and waste of battery.
gpu works hard to get the job done in that resolution. especially gaming.
thank you for sharing this trick for us.
google should consider to put resolution changer on the next android.
and android vendor should realize put hi-res on small screen is just plain dumb.

It's hard to take a video without a camera, but to give youman example, on 500x800 asphalt 7 give me 60fps on the shangai track, with my 800x1280 default resolution, I have 20fps aprox with a lot of fluctutations, it's a great app, and with GMD hide buttons, is almost perfect.

Yes, on the HTC Desire 480x800 display, you need to set it to something lower that it, for example, 360x600, it increase the gaming performance, this trick work great on high res display like the nexus 7 or nexus 10 displays for example, try to reduce the resoution to something that retain the original aspect ratio and be lower that 480x800, 360x600 or 240x400 make a grat change, but im not sure about image quality on this device...

Hey I bought the app and it works fine i tried most of the resolutions and even a custom one but it seems that no resolution lower than my physical one will go full screen i always get black borders do you get this too?
thanks a8 soc
I tried tweaking my resolution to a higher one yet nothing happens on my Alcatel OneTouch T10. Any fix on this?
Sory for the lazy responce, I have so much time working and other personal things I read on the store that the apk only make the new resolution use the full screen on 4.2+ so if you are on 4.1-, you have it with black borders, sory, but I cant do anything for this :/
is there any way after change resolution for fix buttom touch key(it doesnt work physical touch key)? or any idea where is touch key config file or something like that related in root?

I don't know, I suppose, android mao this keys as a touchscreen surface or something like that, the most easybway is using gmd hide softkeys and with it, trigger a softkeys quick navbar and play with this, I am using Paranoidandroid right now and with the pie controls I fix all my problems, and on smanager I created 2 scripts to execute the commands to change resolution, one for the 500x800 for gaming and the other to 1280x800, the default resolution of the nexus 7.
Try it and leave me a comment with your experience.

For me, the way to go is sticking with default res for everything except gaming, as I say, I have two scripts on 2 widgets on my main screen, one with the commands
su
wm size 500x800
And the other with the commands
su
wm size reset
on jely bean 4.3 this commands set the override resolution of the screen.
on android 4.2.x the wm have to be replaced with am.
The app launch this terminal commands and override our resolution, but since I cant buy the app because of credit card and legal issues on argentina, I made my own scripts with smanager and swidgets . Quick on the fly change, and "letz rack!"
i am using this fantastic program on my thl w8s to scale resolution from 1080p to 720p during games and the speedup is fantastic...i set tasker to autolaunch the app when i click on the game icon, and once finished the game just click on fixes/reset resolution to bring everything back to 1080p . this program is great and the only one i have found...let's hope the developer doesn't abandon it and keeps making it better....and with a better integration in tasker maybe
Ever wonder why your phone can't run a game smoothly as another device which has lower performance specifications? I sometimes ask myself this with 1.2ghz quad core cpu and powervr sgx544 gpu along with 1GB ram runs Asphalt 8 laggy at high or even medium settings? While a 480x800 HVGA phone runs it with better performance? See thats the problem right there a resolution of 720x1280 GPU will run slower than a 480x800 Same GPU. Why am I doing this well I got tired of hearing games not optimized for my gpu and seeing that lower end phones running games I cant run.
So i decided to do some research of my GPU and have understand that it's a capable GPU and then i thought to myself what if i can change game resolution for more performance similar to a PC or i tried HVGA games on my WVGA and it was faster. That was the moment i can run asphalt 8 on high settings now thanks to changing resolution. I have seen a lot of apps and saw where someone tried it and stuck at bootloop well this App is safe to use, although i can't guarantee that!
READ CAREFULLY!
Root Devices Required for this to work!
Requires root on Android 4.3 and higher.( i got 4.2 and it worked)
Google Play
NOMone Resolution Changer
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer ( i need 10 post total to insert links)
This app you can see your current settings to the top - Width x Height - DPI (Mines 720x1280 320dpi)
You can revert back to that default settings if you messed up or you can try a custom settings and if you can't see navigation bars or or even the virtual keys JUST PANIC OMG I'm just kding do nothing and it automatically reverts back in 10 seconds.
You can also choose a preset, there are from QVGA to WVGA resolutions.
Simply set a custom or preset settings and see it instantly activated no reboot required you don't have to go into build.prop file either.
1.) If app says superuser denied..go find superuser or SU# if u have it installed as an app and allow it manually.
2.) Changing resolution problems can happen if you lower your height resolutions your soft touch keys might not work, ENABLE virtual keys in app settings and tick the bars your going to need eg back, menu, task etc.
3.) If you happened to set a resolution and you select SKIP revert and your phone locks and half of the lock screen is cut off which means you cannot slide to unlock try sliding screen to right side my camera opens up and my phone is unlock again. I don't know about other devices so i ''HIGHLY RECOMMEND'' do not leave phone unattended for lock screen to activate. IF YOU DO SO restarting phone won't help you will be stuck.
You can try Different resolutions take a look here copy paste into address bar...pacoup.com/2011/06/12/list-of-true-169-resolutions/
Blu life play - 720x1280 (default)
changed resolution to something like 600x1280
Asphalt 8 Significance performance increased.
Nova 3 Runs smoother than before.
Blu life play - 720x1280 (default)
changed resolution to something like 320x480(dont look that bad its like 800x600 on 16:9 wide screen)
I can noticed fps is around 50-60 in Asphalt 8
This should work for all phones in the requirement field. It's like changing PC game resolution which increases fps according to the bottleneck.
Note : This is just a guide I'm not the owner of this app
and i don't take any responsibility if something happens to your phone.
hahaha
Well it worked for me lmfao :laugh:
I wonder if this is safe, can anyone post more feedback?
if it works 100%, thank you very much for sharing

yea it's safe because if anything goes wrong it automatically switches back your're resolution after 10 seconds. Just ensure that you're Root on Android 4.3 and higher(i have 4.2 and it worked) GL
@Mad VIbes too bad ther isnt any lower i can go for my phone other than 240x320 for ace plus i need 4.3 also meh

Yea man but i think there are 4.3 and also 4.4 on xda for ace plus don't know if it's stable because I'm not sure though
Much Better If...
I think it's much better if you use the Xposed Module AppSettings. It also has Per-App Resolution Changer, and it's much easiee to use, and probably more efficient

Will this work in 2021?
I have 2 phones, Xperia T running 5.1.1 and an Xperia M running aosp 6.0.1 with nui kernel.
before doing this I could run it on the but was really laggy and the game was unplayable on the T.
Things you will need;
-root
-gl tools
Now you need to install gltools and install the 2nd driver.( on the play store but its paid, no warez here so no links)
Now open gl tools and find pokemon go.
Check force 16 bit rendering and optimise glsl shaders. Next set render resolution to 0.5 (doesn't effect a whole load but helped with the Ts 720 screen, probably not needed for lower res) and set downscale textures to 0.5. That's it done!
After doing this, the game runs butter smooth on my T and runs somewhat smoother on my M. This is all because the app uses less ram (was hitting nearly 600mb ram at most)
Let me know if it helped

Yeah, especially in built up areas my game has went from using 570mb ram at max to just under 300mb
