Call up keyboard any time? - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I remember that in the old day (with Gingerbread 2.3.X), when you want to launch the keyboard, you can hold the menu key anytime. However, unfortunately, I don't know why I can no longer use the same method to call up the keyboard with newer Jellybean 4.1.X devices. Therefore, I would like to know that if there is a way that I could do the same thing. If not, is there a trick or a mod I can use to fix it? Thanks.
I am using Note 2 (international N7100) with Omega ROM.

To be able to open it anywhere, you go into the settings for the keyboard and check the box for 'permanent notification'. It will then keep an entry in the notifications which you can tap to bring up the keyboard at any point. Or may be you can try Hacker's Keyboard (search in Google Play). Checking its Guide, there's in fact a section suggesting such a feature: You can configure the gesture used for this in the keyboard's "Gesture and key actions" settings menu. If the swipe action is too hard to trigger, try binding the "close keyboard" action to the "Volume down" hardware key. This won't interfere with normal use of the volume button while the keyboard is closed. Though this applies to "close": If there are gestures you can configure, it might as well be able to have one for "open". The FAQ may reveal some more clues.

ShapeWriter Menu switch?

I recently started using shapewriter on my Nexus one. Not really sure why it gets a bad wrap since after I got used to it, I can type about twice as fast with fewer errors as using a regular soft keyboard or keyboard replacement which was welcome since I lost my HW G1 keyboard switching to Nexus. And hell it's free and legal. But I had a couple of quick questions in case anybody else on here uses it.
1. Sometimes I want to use the regular android keyboard for apps like terminal, is there a menu key to let me switch to the android keyboard. On the regular keyboard it's just hold down 123 button and switch inputs. I can't seem to find an equivalent in shapewriter unless I go back to the android settings page and shutoff shapewriter manually in there.
2. anyway to set a gesture to launch the voice input stuff since there isn't a voice input shortcut on the keyboard.
Thanks!
~Bryan
I'm looking for a keyboard that has the secondary characters over the primary ones as well as the voice input key.
I didn't like shapewriter and better keyboard seems to be missing the voice input keys.
Like the stock keyboard, but hate having to push a seperate key to get numbers and then again for the letters.
To change the keyboard just hold down on the text field until the menu pops up and select input method

That is a very useful tip and almost exactly what I need. The one app that tip doesn't seem to work for is terminal, which is the app I mainly need to switch back to the stock keyboard as it is the only one supported. or perhaps I should find a better terminal program.
Though its not as good as the HTC IME keyboard with a Voice to Text, a Long press on '.' will bring up a menu to select punctuation. I just found this out yesterday.

Modifying HTC IME Mod keyboard key placement...possible??

Ok, i love the HTC IME mod keyboard...but i really hate how small the space bar is. I am always hitting the period button. I use the the option to swap the smiley/12# button, which places the 12# button on the left side of the keyboard.
my question is...is it possible to modify the keyboard .apk to delete the smiley key on the right side, push the period key to the right where the original smiley/12# button is, and stretch out the space bar? I know it wouldn't be easy, and would probably require creating new key images, but would this be an easy task for an app dev?? Is it possible for me to do it under instruction?
Thanks!
If you have a rooted phone, this can be done.
In the market place, you can download Smart Keyboard Pro for $2, and it allows you to customize the keyboard with other skins, and even removing the smiley face gestures.
If you download it, MENU > LANGUAGE & KEYBOARD > SMART KEYBOARD PRO Settings > GENERAL SETTINGS > SMILEY KEY.
You can enable and disable it, etc.

No menu button?

Is there any way to force a menu button entry? Many older programs such as Scumm Vm do not have on-screen menus of any kind of rely on the button.
How can I play Full Throttle now!?!?!?! Good god the calamity.

'Y' should be acting as a menu button. Unless ScummVM maps it to something else, it should bring the menu up.

AFAIK ScummVM is a derelict project - fully functioning and fully featured but no longer updated. It will likely never have anyone tailoring Shield support for it. So I have no way whatsoever to access the menu once in game, and hence no way to save or load, making most games essentially fruitless to play given their nature as long graphic adventures. I think the exclusion of a menu button is a bummer and a deficiency. They could of coded so a double press of the Nvidia button registers as a menu press, or something akin to that; knowing how cool Nvidia is, I imagine they'll either add this in, or their openness about the Shield will allow a custom rom to force it in... Still, it's a bummer right now that ScummVM is essentially "broken" on the Shield. 15+ years of superb graphic adventures.. Nuts.
I know the menu button is no longer a requirement on Android devices, but I for one am very sorry to see it go, even outside of implications for old Android applications that do not get freqeuent updates such as ScummVM.
Also the lack of a menu button means I can't bring up the keyboard at will in apps such as Dosbox! That's a huge problem! Being able to bring up the keyboard whenever you want was useful in many, many applications, I don't know why they would ever eliminate that.
I've yet to try SCUMM on the shield but there isn't a way to bring it up by swiping the screen?
On Dosbox, the keyboard can be brought up by swiping down from the top of the screen. Maybe it can be done somehow with ScUMM.

Is there an App like Button savior which has a menu button?? I use that app on my nook tablet which only has one button but I don't recall there being a menu button
If you're rooted you can use tincore keymapper and make whatever button you want into the menu button. Just run it when you run the emulator.
"Home 2 shortcut" could also work. Like someone above said it could assign menu to double tap of the home button. I've not tried it on the shield though. Though I'm not sure it can be used like this...It might only work to launch apps.

I know this is an old post, but it came up on google when I was trying to resolve this problem myself. I decided to sign up and post the solution I found incase someone else searches the web trying to fix this problem.
I'm using the Nvidia Shield, but i believe this Build of ScummVM resolves problems for a lot of Android Devices:
google: ScummVm svn55436 1-1-0-7 (I Can't post links as a new user)
This is a stand-alone version of ScummVm, it offers an onscreen keyboard, as well as the ability to map buttons--resolving the issue of accessing a menu to save/load your game progress
Here is what I did using Nvidia Shield:
1. unistalled any Scumm apps I had
2. Using the chrome browser I went to: H TTP anddev.at.ua/load/scummvm_svn55436/1-1-0-7 (OR) google: ScummVM svn55436 1-1-0-7 (Again, I Can't post links as a new user)
the download link is at the top of the post
3. I went to settings>security> Check "Unknown Sources" UnCheck "Verify apps"
(This prevents Android from blocking installation switch these settings back after step 4.)
4. I then went to apps>downloads> and clicked "7_scummvm-sdl-1.7.apk" to install it
5. once installed I opened the program, I spent sometime configuring things in a trial by error fashion
Here's my configuration settings to my best recollection:
1. Video Settings> Check--Keep 4:3 screen aspect ratio
2. Mouse Emulation> Calibrate Touchscreen
3.Remap Physical Keys> (I pressed the "left shoulder" button on my gamepad)> Select Action> (scroll down) Show all Keycodes> then select "F5" <<<<This Lets you access the menu so you can SAVE/LOAD!!!!!
Were you able to use the analog stick to control the cursor? Mine acts very erratic. I followed your instructions and scumm works fine but I just that issue.

I've been able to get by just fine using the touchscreen. The joystick is a little funky on me too, any movement tends to send the cursor drifting offscreen.
The guy who did this build, I believe, designed it for android devices in general and not specifically for the Shield, so if you want the analog joystick working you might be s-o-l.
I have to say though, the touchscreen is working pretty good for me--I'd give it shot and try to get used to it.

Is there a No-Root Solution to bringing the Menu Button Back?

I am migrating from a pre-"recent apps" button phone, and I absolutely hate the recent apps button.
I constantly press it by accident, and since my finger was trying to do something close to where that dumb button is I also constantly accidentally click "close all".
I put my most used apps on my home screen, I don't need to ever see my most recent apps.
What I do like, is being able to open the menu whenever I want to, with a simple button press. I use some old apps that aren't cluttered with "more" or "..." buttons, so getting the menu to come up is a huge pain (holding the back button for eternity).
I'd rather have a much less useful function mapped to long-press than the actually useful function I tend to use frequently (quickly accessing the menu for a save-state with emulators...)
None of the solutions I've seen allow you to do anything with the menu button without root.
There is a thread in the S6 forum talking about modifying your generic file, but that appears to require root and I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the S7.
There are threads that suggest "Buttons Remapper (no root)" allows you to do this, but having installed this I can verify that anything involving the "Menu" function *does* require root for this app.
Are there any true no-root options to substituting the recent-apps button with the menu button?

I wish this was the case. You can not set "Menu" as the action for the keys unless your phone is rooted.

Disable permanentely multi windows...

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920W8) and the multi window key is making me very crazy. I really miss the good old menu key.
Anyways, I've tried Multiwindow Toggle and the Multiwindow disabler and it's not working for me.
My phone is rooted so I'm willing to try anything that will disable it for good.
Thanks!
By the way, is it possible to change the vocation of that button and making it a menu?
Thanks again.
Finally, I found myself the solution.
It was in fact the "recent apps" key that I hate so much.
The solution is "All in one gesture" apk which allows you to reatribuate hard keys fonctions or simply shut them up.
Hi,
This is not a very well known fact, but in some apps I've noticed that if you press and hold the back key it will work as a menu key on stock firmware.
All the best,
~Lord
I have no problems with the back key. I want to disable "recent apps/multi windows" key in the bottom left of the S6.
With "All in one gesture" apk' I can decide whathever function I want for any key but I realized that when I close the application, the "recent apps/multi windows" are still there.
I won't give up until I find the solution for this, which will be next weekend because I swap phones for work.
Thanks anyways.
