Yes, you're right. Multiuser support is what you're talking about, and it is available from android version 4.2.2 and above. It is enabled on tablets by default. For phones, you would need to flash custom ROMs that have multiuser support. If you're not on 4.2.2+, then you could try the SwitchMe app on the Playstore instead (requires root).

Since I do not know much about your device, you should probably ask this question here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2100
You're bound to get a better answer that way!
P.S. When you ask in that forum, avoid using words like 'best rom' or 'stable rom'.

[Q] Google Now - Enable

Hello there,
First sorry if there is somewhere a answer to this but i tried to search and did not manage to find what i was looking for.
Well my Question is ..
Is there a way to enable Google Now side screen ( the one where you pull the screen to the Right and the card show .. see attached) on a rooted stock rom 4.4.4?
Just to mention that the voice Command "OK Google" works !
When i had SlimKat installed it was enabled but when i whent back to stock it is disabled.
It is disabled due to country limitations i think when i was on Stock and Not rooted but know since i know it works on custom roms is there a way to enable it ?
Here is a screenshot of the app you need for that if I understand your question correctly. Once you open the app it will ask you a series of questions.

SnoopSnitch is an Android app that collects and analyzes mobile radio data to make you aware of your mobile network security and to warn
you about threats like fake base stations (IMSI catchers), user tracking and over-the-air updates. With SnoopSnitch you can use the data collected in the GSM Security Map at gsmmap.org and contribute your own data to GSM Map.
This application currently only works on Android phones with a Qualcomm chipset and a stock Android ROM. It requires root priviliges to capture mobile network data.
Requirements:
Qualcomm-based Android phone (see list below)
Stock Android ROM, version 4.1 or later
Note: Unfortunately, custom Android ROMs like CyanogenMod are not supported, as they lack the drivers necessary to collect radio data.
Root privileges on phone
Tested Devices:
The following devices have been verified to work:
Samsung S3 Neo (GT-I9301I)
LG G2 (LG-D802)
Sony Xperia Z1 (C6903)
Samsung S5 (SM-G900F)
Motorola Moto E (Moto E)
Samsung S4 (Qualcomm variant)
It is very likely that other Qualcomm-based Android phones also work, if they are rooted and have a stock firmware.
Incompatible Devices:
The following devices have been found to be incompatible and can not be used with SnoopSnitch:
UNSUPPORTED: Every device without a Qualcomm chipset
UNSUPPORTED: Every device with custom ROM
UNSUPPORTED: Samsung Galaxy S2 & S3
UNSUPPORTED: Nexus 5
UNSUPPORTED: Huawei Ascend Y300

Possibly your kernel lacks the necessary support. For instance people with a Nexus 5 can flash this kernel: http://d-h.st/mmb (thanks to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/radio-enable-lte-band-3-nexus-5-d820-t2928561). Well, Carsten Nohl, one of the developers, said yesterday on 31C3, that on CustomROMS like CM certain proprietary drivers are missing, which are needed for getting certain debugging information. Later yesterday in a workshop on 31C3 participants found out, that on some CM11 Phones the app is working.
There the app worked on:
Samsung S3 Neo
Samsung S5
LG G2
Sony Xperia Z1
Motorola Moto E
and dind't work on
Samsung S2, S3, S4 and S5 Exynos
Nexus 5
Fairphone
you can watch the presentation from Nohl on 31C3 here:
http://media.ccc.de/browse/congress...830_-_mobile_self-defense_-_karsten_nohl.html
on my nexus5 with slimkat 8.20 it says:
"device /dev/diag does not exist"
About the compatible devices - I can confirm the app works on on Xperia V with the stock 4.3 Android. It gives no errors, but I have not yet encountered malicious GSM cells to verify the detection works ok.
Why do we have to make long distance calls and send sms to use this app?

Sure I did. It doesn't say why we have to call/sms a specific number and why we data can't be gathered from our every day call/sms and why data can't be sent to the test site through the internet rather than call/sms.

You need to flash a compatible kernel. http://d-h.st/mmb
Works on my SONY Xperia Z1 with CM11.
Though, when doing the test call my device was banned, for whatever reason....
Yeah I can (probably) confirm this with Z1 compact with CM 11. Works since day one I guess. The test works (around the first days incoming calls and sms did not, probably because of overload of the callingserver), but never had any sort of attacks. Now I'm in doubt if radio-part does not work with cm 11, as mentioned in the description, or there were zero attacks.
Another thing I observed. The software sometimes produces many wake-locks. But I guess thats normal if backgroundservice is active.
@ papperlapapp: Did you monitor any attacks (SS7 or silent sms)? Or even IMSI-catchers?
Installed the app without problems on my S5 with Phoenix ROM (Stock Based). However, when I start the active test, the app stops responding and android asks me several times if I want to close it. I chose no every time. Now I'm wondering if the tests are still running in the background or if the app just hang. Started the tests about 35 min ago, still waiting, absoluteley nothing happened yet.
Why not install something like https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=monitor&fdid=com.eolwral.osmonitor and see if that task is stil running?
Usefull tool anyway

Custom ROMs - Device Security

Hi Guys,
I am new to Android (a noob) - Started with flashing some custom ROMs on my devices and i am bothered by the security of my device, although android is open source, is it possible that a custom ROM is bugged to steal your personal or financial information? I don't have any experience with android development and i don't have time to jump into Android development so even if the ROM is open source i wont be going through the code to check for leaks or potential built-in hacks.
Basically my question is, is it safe to install Unofficial ROMs such as CM unofficial? I understand, the majority of apps store sensitive data on device in encrypted way but still, i don't think it will be hard to just modify the ROM to develop a built-in key-logger OR read username/password from a username/password fields while user is typing using an on-screen keyboard, save it as LOG file and when connected to the internet, send it to the 'unknown' source. I can see so many possibilities, the user wont even have a clue that they are sharing data. it is like Microsoft making windows Open Source and people making their own versions of Windows and users installing them on thier PCs.
Please help me understand - How safe are our devices when running on custom ROMs from developers we don't even know (no disrespect to any dev, all this amazing work is appriciated, I just want to understand the security of android - Please help me understand as after flashing custom ROMs on my devices i am avoiding installation of sensitive apps or even using chrome to type my passwords) - am i paranoid ?
Cheers
It's entirely possible that a malicious custom ROM could steal your data (or worse), and there's really no technical way to mitigate it. You're implicitly trusting the developer of a ROM by flashing it. All you can really do is make sure that whatever ROM you choose is from a well-known, trusted developer.

You are paranoid but that's good!
Yes we are trusting the devs (or Samsung et al with stock) AND hopefully smart coders who regularly check the code (but I suspect checking doesn't happen a lot!). You can use a firewall/packet sniffer to check what servers your phone is connecting to and see (some) of the data being sent to reduce your risk and put your mind at ease. But still it's no guarantee, as I understand it (I'm no expert!).

If you get a stock android you are also trusting the developer. Just look at these lenovo laptops which had malware served on their stock windows versions. Best is to always start clean when buying any form of product.

That's true, but how do you define ”clean”? In theory, you could build AOSP for your device yourself so you're only trusting Google, but that's completely impractical for most people. If you just switch from stock to someone else's custom ROM, you're just changing who you're trusting.

Perhaps it's a silly question but I do it: do you think that a XDA Senior Member with one or two thousand of thanks is reliable?

No, a custom ROM could make data look like it's coming from any app it wants, or just bypass the firewall completely.

Alternatively if the device is on your own network you could wireshark it using a computer and monitor IP addresses that the device attempts to connect to.

This is helpful but not perfect. There's a bunch of ways to stealthily exfiltrate data over a monitored network, and don't forget a malicious ROM might only do its dirty work over cell and not Wi-Fi for this very reason.

Remember, everything I've been saying is reasons not to flash a ROM unless you trust the dev. None of it is saying that devs aren't trustworthy. I don't know of a single instance when a well-respected XDA member's ROM turned out to be malicious.

Thank you for clarifying that but the question comes once more: how to recognize a well-respected XDA member? With the number of thanks? It is obvious that if the smartphone you are interested in is not so famous, there will be few comments on custom ROMs, too. So, how to evaluate the reliability of a xda dev who is developing ROM for not-well-known devices?
Are ROMs in Original development Section trustworthy?

Number of thanks can hardly tell that a dev is reliable or not(in some cases it can), rather it's the quality of their work and their expertise on the related topics that could clarify their position a bit. the recognized contributors, recognized developers, recognized themers you should look at cause
these are given to a member after being checked and passed by moderaters here on XDA. So they are pretty much reliable guys. in cases where there are no recognized developers and hardly any comments. you will have to check and find out yourself
1. ask the dev if he has tested the ROM himself?
2. how did he compiled the ROM? is it a port or just a modified copy of another ROM or a build from source.
3. check the link of the download, if it's to some survey site or ask for a password, stay away from it.
4. if you trust the download link, then download scan with antivirus and unzip the file.
5. generally I look inside app if there are apps which I don't trust and I remove them, then check build.prop, init.d folders. basic things to look for is any references of some other website/ports in between codes. if you're more paranoid you can check bin folder as well and every other you want.
6.don't install the ROM simply Root and debloat.

That's because lollipop and marshmallow ROM files are further zipped into system.new.dat files which needs another method to extract, https:\\forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/extract-dat-marshmallow-lollipop-easily-t3334117
Just a small correction. When going to aosp you I ly are trusting yourself as you can inspect everything you add and remove what you don't.
Now to add to your paranoia. A custom rom could be made that allows all apps root permission without the users knowing. Add in a Key logger and have e it all headed without you ever knowing. This is common is xiaomi and other china based devices.
Heck there are a few key parts in the playstore with built in Key loggers.
Heck most of the go apps send all their data to China. Things like their Keylogger files, screen recording and device usage. But mind you it is all legal

Do these ROMs have the slight but constant micro-stuttering that the stock ROM has?
I guess all these ROMs are loaded with Google's stuff?
With the exception of Play Store I'd like to be free of the Google fleet of useless apps.
It's great that you've been able to port these ROMs. I hope a lot of people use them. I just have different needs! Tx.

Yes, all of them. You can "freeze" or delete unwanted Google apps. Do it manually or try to find scripts which can do this automatically.
Hi, I was thinking to buy this tablet.
Can these ROMs fix the issue of too high brightness even at the lowest level?
If not can you recommend a free application to solve the problem?
Better this or teclast m89 pro? Thanks.

To solved this brightness issue I use the sFilter app or any other blue light filter app.
But to tell the truth, I wouldn't recommend to buy any Teclast tablet. I have a problem where he doesn't accept the installation of Instagram or Facebook app. I saw that many people have the same problem.
Anyone else with this problem or know how to solve?

I added solution, check it and let me know if it works for u
It's possible to change brightness limits manually by editing firmware files, If there's a big problem for u and other users I can change its' range sometime. Just let me know what firmware u are using.
Hello dev!
Are you still working on this device firmware? I bought it this month and not even on official site could find updates for, so I don't know if there is any firmware that I should update before using these that you made...
I'm using Pixel Experience and found it great. But I had problems with the initial setup, which always had trouble trying to recover the configuration of another device. When I checked to set up as a new device it work fine.
I could not open Magisk too, but i wanted to disable it and remove, but always shows error when trying. I'll try MIUI in sequence to see if I can.
Another question: The modified Stock has gapps included? (and can I remove root?)
Thank you so much for your work, I was happy to know that have other firmware for this tablet.
PS.: sorry for the "google translator english", my english is poor. lol

I used the modified rom too and liked a lot, but I couldn't install some apps through the playstore and had problems to remove root (Magisk). So I installed ASUS ROM and it is very stable and everything is working great. I'll leave it and see what happens!
Thanks!

Hello!
1) There is no more firmwares to port for our device. Also I don't know much about modding firmwares, so Pixel was my first successful experiment.
2) Latest official firmware for our device is TOS v2.1 which can be found in appropriative thread here. Seems no more updates will be released for our device.
3) Restoring function is bad idea esp on custom ROM. You should always make clean installation.
4) Custom ROMs can only boot with root access (e.g. Magisk). You cant uninstall it. In other case your device wont boot (Android 7.0 classical issue). P.S Magisk is not like "classic" root, so you can "hide" it for apps that don't work on rooted device.
5) Of course stock ROM includes Gapps. All made changes are listed in topic. Root can'f be removed on any custom ROM (see p.4).

Thank you!
I gave the tablet to my son, the Stock ROM that came on it is'nt good and so I put the ASUS ZenUI ROM. (After testing all others)
I hide Magisk and the ROM is working perfectly.
Thank you so much for the great work.
Happy 2020.

Can't Install WhatsApp on custom rom

Dear Forum members,
I have lineae 15.1 on my Samsung S2 GT-19100 Running Oreo 8.1.0.
WhatsApp stopped supporting my version and said I needed ot upgrade. I couldn't upgrade. Just nothing happened when I tried to update.
I couldn't download via the phone so I downloaded a good .apk file and installed it via my desktop computer.
After I installed WhatsApp the app said my phone date and time was wrong so I recalibrated the date and time but it still said phone date and time is wrong.
So it was stuck on that notification page... Phone date and time is wrong.
Then it said WhatsApp does not support custom Roms. Is there any way to get WhatsApp to work on my custom rom? I've tried all I know and I can't get it working.
Thanks Community
Tim

Looking at Whatsapp's FAQ it seems like Whatsapp doesn't support custom roms and/or rooted devices. And if I understood your question right, you are currently running Lineage OS. So I would think your best hope would be finding an mod that supports rooted/custom rom devices or modding the app yourself.
If my answer helped you please upvote it to show your appreciation,
Jamie
Did you download that apk from the WhatsApp official website? Is it the latest version, v2.21.23.17 or later?
The common prompt 'the date is wrong' means that the version you are using is too old.
The version I installed is 2.18.92...
Tim
Your question got answered by WhatsApp themselves:
About rooted phones and custom ROMs | WhatsApp Help Center
faq.whatsapp.com
Try using the latest WhatsApp apk from apkmirror. I think it has more to do with the version you have installed. WhatsApp tends to disable the old APKs.
Also, although they say they don't support custom roms, it's just a pop-up that says you may face issues because you are on a custom rom which you can just click 'ok' and move forward.

Get the lastest apk of v2.21.23.25 from the WhatsApp official website or update it through Google Play Store at first.
I loaded the latest version and it restored all my conversations and content. What a refreshing simple answer ! So easy..
I was assuming all sorts of mismatches but it worked a treat. Usually I avoid the lates versions because of matching issues.
Thanks for the guidance, I should have spotted that myself.. ! Enjoy your day.
