Hi!
I've rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and now want to flash it with CM10
This is the guide I've been following but I've never succeeded:
w w w . android. gs /update-galaxy-s-4g-cm10-android-4-1-jelly-bean/
Every time I go into CWM and chose the zip file, it says that it can't mount my SD card.
I've wiped the cache and deleted all user data (factory reset), though it still won;t flash.
I've used programs like Android Commander, and it still won't flash.
Will someone please explain to me why I can't flash the rom?
Welcome to the forum,
You need recent CWM (the blue one) to be able to flash mtd roms.
You have two choices:
1) Flash using heimdall one-click (found in the stickies section) then CM10 using CWM. <=- (you do need to follow the instructions carefully)
2) Download Samsung Galaxy Kernel Flasher from play store, and download AntonX kernel (Search the forums), then flash CM10.
Edit:
I checked the link you provided, I would say please DO NOT flash any ROM from unknown sources. In quick glance they provide false
information. Specifically you cannot return to STOCK with CWM once you are using MTD rom (you need heimdall or Odin).
Please read before you flash anything.
PS: despite flashing using CWM is somewhat safe for this device (SGS4G), but don't take this safety for granted for other devices,
ALWAYS be careful, and learn from other people mistakes (I recently hard bricked S2 Hercules by flashing wrong kernel using CWM).

How would I get the new (blue one) CWM?
And what could I do about my sd card mounting in CWM?
Thanks again though for the advice, it had too many bugs!

instead of chasing newbies and directing them individually with 3 people giving 3 pieces of advice i though id make a thread explaining 2e/3e what it means, and how to get around the e: signature verification error all in one place.
First, the 2.1 stock rom had 2e recovery. this recovery accepted flashable .zip files as long as they were named "update.zip" . this recovery mode was easy to use to flash roms, kernels, root, modems, cwm recovery, themes ect...
many of the tutorials on this board were written when 2e recovery was still the standard. and many members restore to stock jf6 2.1 and use the same files they have been using the whole time. this creates confusion with newcomers who read old articles for rooting and other mods.
3e recovery is standard in froyo 2.2. it only accept digitally signed update.zip files and forces a full user data wipes after any flash. if you have stock froyo you have 3e recovery! you can not install root or CWM via update.zip with this recovery mode without mods like the old tutorials for 2.1 tell you. but there are solutions to this, and we will cover these below..
Click to collapse
what to do?
there are several options, the quickest for you will be based on your end goals
you can either mod 3e or replace it. it can be replaced by flashing a kernel containing cwm in odin or in sgs kernel flasher.
1 if you wish to stay stock but rooted with the ability to flash from recovery the quickest way is: root and mod recovery. either one can be done first depending on which methods you use to mod recovery.
2 for the obsessive compulsive there is this option: flash back to 2.1 with 2e recovery, then you can install new rom, root, cwm, ect... via the update.zip method without issue. Many users consider flashing to stock, a cleaner rom install, but now as most full rom zips do a wipe on install (erasing the stock), this is no longer true.
3 flash cwm enabled kernel via odin, having cwm built into a kernel bypasses 3e. and is your fastest route to custom rom flashing.
4 for those who want a stock 2.2 rom but a modded kernel can root via rageagainstthecage then install sgs kernel flasher or galaxy tuner from the market and flash a kernel containing cwm. this isnt gone over because it is self explanatory
there are many other variations, but these are the ones that made most sense to me
ROOT:
there are 2 methods to root.
1st (old) root method is via update.zip in stock or cwm recovery. this can only work in 2e or after 3e is modified. this was made for 2e recovery. directions are in the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725555&highlight=root
2nd method is to root via rageagainstthecage. this can easily be done with superoneclickroot (automatic) and if that fails there are tutorials on how to do it manually.
superoneclick can be found in the thread below. Make sure 'superuser' app gets installed on phone, if root is successful but no app is present you can download the superuser app from the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
if the superoneclick fails here are detailed instructions to manually root via rage against the cage:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827544
FIXING 3e:
method 1 (automatic)
you can fix 3e via batch script on a windows pc. look at post 3 below from TRusselo. This method works with and without being rooted first, root can also be achieveved later by either method listed above.
url for download is below: remember to disable you antivirus/anitmalware software
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19201431/Files/3e_fix-Unzip-ClickInstall.zip
Method 2 (manual)
First root your device via 'superonclick' [directions are above], then copy the fixed file over the old one via ADB, terminal emulator or a root file explorer. I prefer root explorer but there are free apps that can do it. most free apps will require you to mount the system as r/w in terminal emulator first.
the fix file and detailed directions to Manually fix 3e are found in the thread below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
at this point you are ready to install cwm recovery via update.zip or rom manager and flash whatever you wish.
FLASHING TO STOCK AND USING 2e: ( obsessive compulsive )
this is not how i do it by the way. but some people like to flash the phone and flash to stock to restore original files and wipe as much data as possible before flashing a rom. in my opinion it is not needed 90% of the time but some roms are weird, and may require original stock files and dont force wipe on install. i may flash to stock if i run into trouble occasionally.
use odin3 one-click downloader 1.0 to flash to 2.1 stock. if you have a 1007 or 1008 (found under the battery) check to see if the phone has working 3 button combo, if not use the 3-button fix with odin3 flashing utility version 1.3+ . If you have rogers and dont want the AT&T to be the splash screen there is a rogers version here. once the 3buttons are fixed avoid flashing with a one-click installer. flashing bootloaders is risky, not that risky but why do it if you dont have to?
Odin3 One-Click Downloader
[optional, removes all data, even wipes internal sdcard] once on the stock rom with debugging enabled you can preform a master clear with the oneclick installer. it does a factory format of the entire sdcard. oneclick is found in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
sbl.bin 3-button fixes can be found in these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812434&highlight=3button+fix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
if you need one of ^these^ you will also need to use adb or a jig to get into download mode. there is likely an explanation in each thread somewhere in the replies, also the adb commands are outlined in the "safe" jf6 odin thread above. if you avoid odin oneclick you will only need 3-button fix once.
rogers roms are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
now you can use update.zip files in stock recovery.
REPLACING 3e WITH CWM:
if you intend to flash a custom rom it will be rooted so there is no need to root. instead you can fast forward to replacing 3e recovery by odin flashing a kernel, for this i use speedmod kernel. which kernel you use is irrelevant because it is only temporary. instructions for odin are all over but in the case of flashing a kernel there is no need for any pit file or repartitioning. make sure repartition is not selected, place the kernel in the pda slot, it must be in ".tar" format. put the phone in download mode and press start. this takes no more than 3 seconds and is what i use most often.

did you root before you tried manually? you will need superoneclickroot if not. make sure you properly change the file system to read write. are you using adb? or working from the phone?
if all else fail you can swap kernels right from the phone in sgskernel flasher(after you have root that is), just download a kernel that is built off kb1 and has cwm baked in
I was working from the phone, without adb because I didn't see that in the OP. I am rooted with superoneclick root already...Where can I find the sgskernel? (I really should have payed closer attention in those programming classes). I apologize for the newbie questions...I have had my Cappy awhile just decided to start modding it.
EDIT: I have the sgs kernel flasher... it dawned on me to check the market.

I haven't tried this yet but expect it's exactly my issue since my phone is only a few weeks old. The update.zip file gave that exact error and I had to use SuperOneClick to root my phone.
After I try this I might get brave enough to load a new fancy rom but we shall see. I'm in no hurry.
I currently have a 2.2.1 based rooted rom and recovery is installed.
If I want to upgrade to CM7 rom, can I flash it straight via recovery ?

Samsung Captivate Full Update Guide
I read the CM full install guide. Just want to confirm that if I have recovery already installed on my phone I can skip the recovery install step.
Some posts I have read suggest that a GB bootloader is required before a GB based tom can be flashed. not sure if this applies in my case.

From the install guide:
Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery
"If the Samsung Captivate is already rooted & has ClockworkMod Recovery installed, skip this section"
So yes you can skip the recovery install step.
From reading a few posts that I searched "CM7 Gingerbread Bootloader" it appears if you have froyo/eclair bootloaders it will work. If you have gingerbread bootloaders...... it will work. The key is not to mix them. Once you go to Gingerbread bootloaders do not flash back to a 2.1/2.2 rom using a one-click that includes the bootloaders.
This link is a post containing many one-clicks that include bootloaders and those that do not.
Good Luck.
Just checkout the CM7 captivate page and you will get all the info you need.
CM7 page in this forum ?
I have seen some videos on Youtube where flashing a GB rom included several steps including backing up EFS data and later restoring it.
Is this required if I upgrade to CM7 by flashing a ZIP via recovery ?
No it's not required. It's up to you whether to do an EFS backup or not before flashing another ROM.
I suggest doing it once the first time you install a new ROM, just in case.
EFS backup is simply copying a folder over to the PC ?
The EFS folder appears to be empty when I look at it using any file browser. Is that normal?

This is a collection of popular kernel and recovery combinations for the Infuse 4G in Odin tar.md5 format. Extract these rar packages in a program like 7zip, and flash the tar.md5 in Odin.
Please be sure that the kernel / recovery image that you flash is intended for the rom that you plan to use. For more information and support for each kernel, please visit the appropriate thread for that kernel. Please don't ask questions about the kernels or report kernel related bugs in this thread.

INSTALL
------------------------
1.) Download and extract the desired kernel package from the section above.
2.) If needed, download the Odin exe HERE.
3.) If needed, install the latest Samsung USB drivers. You can get these by installing Samsung Kies, which can be found HERE.
4.) Place phone in download mode.
5.) Open the Odin exe; if your phone is recognized, the window under ID:COM will turn yellow.
6.) In Odin, click on "PDA" and browse to the tar.md5.
7.) Select the tar.md5. Make sure it shows up in the PDA window, and then click on Start. Do not power off or disconnect the phone while Odin flashes the package and reboots the phone.
8.) You're finished. If the progress window in Odin is green and reads "PASS!", then you have successfully flashed the kernel / recovery package.
FAQ
------------------------
1.) I flashed the stock UCLB3 kernel and now I can't access my external sd card. How can I fix this?
In UCLB3 based roms, if you flash the stock UCLB3 kernel after using a custom kernel, you will most likely have trouble seeing your external sdcard. To fix this, use Root Explorer (or a similar app) to edit /system/etc/vold.fstab. In Root Explorer, browse to /system/etc and choose "Mount R/W" to gain write permission to the directory. Open vold.fstab in the built in text editor. Change the mmc2 in the last line to mmc1. Save and exit. Reboot, and you will regain use of your external sd card.

Note to any user:
If you are on a GB ROM and lost recovery or in a boot loop, one attempt would be to flash just the GB kernel to get back into CWM recovery. You may not need to flash the entire ROM.
Likewise, if you are on a ICS CM9 ROM and lost recovery or in boot loop, you can also try to flash just the ICS kernel to get back to CWM recovery.
If you can't use Odin, use the Heimdall's. If you can't use the Heimdalls, use the Odin.
edit: (after thoughts for new users)
Also: If you are on any stock GB build and flash one of the GB kernels, you don't need to perform any superoneclick, modded 3e etc. You can proceed directly into CWM recovery and flash with you want. If you want only root, check out jscott's root thread or my root thread.

That didn't work. I also tried to flash this kernel (UCLB3) to see if it would give me CWM... Nothing! I am close to loosing my mind. I could do this **** all day long on my Epic 4G but for some reason this phone is kicking my ass.
One thing I'd like to point out is when i power down my phone and try to go into recovery the option to "reinstall packages" does not show. That is the only thing different i've noticed than all the videos and tuturials I found on the thread. Somebody please help me.

Okay, where you lose me is "the 3e file and ROM Manager." Sounds like you're not following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27283140&postcount=1
Make sure, first of all, that you're flashing this one, especially if you're flashing back from CM10. Flash in Odin following jscott30's instructions to the letter. To add CWM, download one of those kernels. Open up the zip file and pull out the zimage and put it on your sdcard (the internal one). Download SGS Kernel Flasher. In SGS Kernel Flasher, choose to flash the zimage you just put on your phone. It will ask to reboot. Reboot and Bob's you're uncle! You have CWM.
Finally, I feel bad for posting here because the dev forums are being overrun with Q&A questions like these. So, apologies to everyone else. However, I've been there and wanted to help you out. In future, please use the Q&A forum if you have a help question.

1. Not going to happen with JB or ICS roms.
2. GB (and Froyo) roms - make sure to disable voodoo lagfix from CWM recovery, reboot and allow conversion process to complete. Then flash a stock kernel using Odin, Heimdall, or SGS kernel flasher. You will lose CWM recovery and some ADB capabilities.
Good luck...

You can look at the guide in the second link in my signature. Instead of flashing the ROM .jar files I listed - use the AntonX kernel you downloaded. It is the same directions to flash the kernel excluding the flashing bootloaders section.

Back to business,my problem is the phone is stuck on the samsung/ t-mobile splash screen.I Tried flashing the heimdall one click collection to return the stock firmware but I got an error message saying kernel failed to load.I have read that odin could flash kernels but havent see any thread for the galaxy s 4g t-mobile.
Try the one click again. It sometimes it will take a couple tries for whatever reason. Make sure USB is firmly in place. Make sure download is good. And if it still doesn't work use a different USB port.
The ODIN One-Click is called Gremlin Remover. Read up on the driver issues and how to avoid them in the guide I mentioned.

Not necessarily, you could get 2.3.6 with Kies mini when ATT released it.
Look in this thread for guides to root. Read, read and read some more and make sure you have Heimdall or Odin on your PC. Follow guide to install correct drivers too.

Still confusing. This phone has stock version of Gingerbread 2.3.6 with UCLB3 firmware. I bought this way. I just want to root and Install CWM. ANy guides out there? This is not froyo and all the help out there shows how to go back to GB or upgrade to 2.3.6/ uclb3 ... like that. I already have UCLB3 firmware and why I need to install it again?
Probably because the links we provided had a rooted version of 2.3.6.

See post #2 or #3 in the first link qkster provided - these are Heimdall packages that will load a custom kernel/recovery with CWM. These will not reinstall the entire rom. Follow the instructions in post #1 if you are unfamiliar with Heimdall.
Or, if you are more comfortable using Odin see this thread and flash any of the three options in the OP that say "red CWM":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698367
**Before you flash the new kernel/recovery, visit the page shown below, download the first package under ARM devices, then copy the zip to your internal SD Card (if you are uncertain copy it to both).**
Home page for SuperUser - http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Direct link to SuperUser installer - http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
Once you have installed the custom kernel/recovery, let the phone sit for about 5-10 minutes - you will hear a voice coming from the phone - this is red CWM non-destructively reformatting your system, data, and dbdata filesystems from stock RFS to ext4 upon first reboot. It is important to let this process complete without interruptions. Once the phone boots, shut the phone down and boot into recovery then flash the SuperUser package... when completed reboot into phone OS and you are rooted.
