how to rezip a .tar file to .tar.gz??? - General Questions and Answers

hi, as title says, basically I had a tar.gz file and I somehow accidently unzipped it to a .tar file, is there any program or converter I could use to rezip it back to a tar.gz file??
thanks very much

Some context: tar is a relatively old archive format that basically does store many files in one file. I think it was developed for tape backups or something.
Many of the unix compression programs like gzip are meant to operate on a single file. So first you pack everything in a tar, then you gzip it and it will be named .tar.gz
Of course you can repack the tar with just applying gzip compression again to it. It depends on the programs you want to use. With the linux/unix gzip it would just be using "gzip file.tar" and it would create "file.tar.gz". With 7zip or so, it should also be trivial by just compressing it and chosing gzip.

Do u have a link to said converter as ive tried doing it from my computer but cant find nothing?
Thanks alot

Any archive program that supports the creation of archives in multiple formats should support it. E.g. winrar. I mentioned 7zip because it's Free and Open Source software but any other like that should work as well. The tar.gz format is really nothing special, it's just one tar file in a gzip archive. It just depends on the software how archives are created.

Those aren't for android though
I'm afraid that I don't think there is one. You're probably stuck using a computer.
Or you could try to get unrar (linux command line) running on your phone and then do this from the command line
Code:
unrar e -p{password} file.rar
Let me know if you get unrar compiled on your phone

Updates by me.
quick search in market, gave me Unrar from Twanky Deuce Software
I use AndroZip for zips and rars, works well
Unrar is closed source, can't get it compiled for ARM.
Unrar and Androzip don't support passworded files.

[Q] XXKG5 files for ODIN

Hi,
I need help from kind heart people in this forum if they can help to re-packaged the XXKG5 files from xda-developer into ODIN flashable files like example
CODE_I9100XXKG5_xxxxxx.tar.m d5
MODEM_I9100XXKG5_xxxxxx.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-xxxxxx.tar.md5
I have downloaded the XXKG5 files from xda-developer BUT the package contains files like boot, cache, factoryfs, hidden, modem, param.lfs, sbl and zImage of which I cannot flash with ODIN.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to have XXKG5 on my SGS2.
Thanks.
i guess you extract the .tar file don't you? just double click 7e file that you originally download and use the extracted file as it is. do not need to extract once again.

I didn't. Yes I extracted the first compressed file dowloaded. Then all I get are the files like in Image 1. Since Odin cannot flash the compressed file in Image 1....IF I extracted the compressed file in Image 1 then all I get are the files like in Image 2...
As you can see, either way I can't flash with Odin.
If you downloaded from xda it shouldntt look like that. You only need to double click on the file and it extracts.if you didn't download from here then here it is

Read the first notice part about extracting the file to make sure you understand clearly.

[Q] .Jar and .Tar files, the .jar files need to be converted to .apk(s)

I recently downloaded a software for my htc sensation 4g, and the software come with 5 files. Two .jar files and three .tar files. In the directions of the software, it said the files had to be converted to .apk format. I got one of the .jar files converted through the website it gave me to use, and I saved it to the root of my sd card. The application installed, but I was required to install j2me. The problem is, I have this other file that needs to be converted from .jar to .apk and I don;t know how to do it because the website will not do it, and I have these .tar files, that I really don't know what to do with, because I didn't think .tar files could be used on android. I checked these .zip files, and they do have the java class files in them.I am just really confused about this, and I hope this is helpful enough to get me some answers. If not, please clarify and maybe, I could help with more info.

Opening fastboot files

Hi everyone,
I know Motorola changed the file format recently to some type of ext4, in the fastboot images. Do we know how to open them yet? I want to grab a couple of files, thanks!
Sent from my XT894 running ICS
I used 7zip to extract. I used safestrap to make a backup which created a system.ext4.win file. I then used 7zip to extract which then gave me the files in the traditional format.

[Q] joining TWRP backup files

I recently did a backup using TWRP (v.2.8.1.0) and now have multiple files (data.ext4.win000, data.ext4.win001, data.ext4.win002 etc).
Can anyone please help by proving information on how to easily merge these files together in Windows 7?
Ultimately I would like to be able to view these using 7-zip.
Thanks!

That's normal. You don't want to merge them. They're all in a folder that is the backup

Those files are separate archives, open then like any other tar.gz

I get an invalid archive error when I try to open the data backups though I don't on any of the other backup files (cache.ext4.win, system.ext4.win etc).
I'm pretty sure they need to be concatenated together though I am not sure if this is easily to accomplish in Windows 7. Here is an other post with a similar problem that was solved using the Ubuntu.
On ubuntu I've just appended .tar to file name and it works.
You should try merging files with total commander and renaming to .tar

Gave that a shot but it didn't work
Should work just copying and pasting them into the same folder. TWRP treats the backup for a partition to be separate and complete from another. I've mixed and matched restoring partitions from different backups and it's worked. You'll have to use your judgment as to whether the restored partitions will play nice with each other.
EDIT - A workaround is to restore the partitions that you want and then back them up into a new archive.
