Do I need to s-off my phone before flashing ROM.

I am new to this phone section . I have unlocked bootloader , flashed recovery and rooted the phone. But when i flashed ROM it struck at bootanimation screen . I waited for about half hr. But it doesnt get past bootanimation screen. I tried two ROM and had the same problem with both of them. So i am wondering if i need to s-off my phone before flashing any ROM?

Enable smart flash from recovery...
S off not compulsory for installing custom Rom of same firmware..
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app
Yes, as Itsakash mentioned you need to have the smartflash option enabled in 4ext recovery. If you have cwm recovery just flash 4ext over it. See HERE

Hi,
Yes.
Make a nandrooid backup.
Place ROM and Gapps on sd card, format all partitions (except sd card),enable smartflash, and flash ROM and Gapps straight away.
Thanks. One more question, did I really need to go s-off,if I could flashing roms with s-on?

you can flash any rom you want if you have always enabled first smartflash
the difference between S-ON and S-OFF is that in S-ON devices when flashing a rom it hasn't the ability to write the boot partition by itself(here is where it comes smartflash)
in S-OFF devices there is no need for that feature
that's why most of us with S-ON are using 4ext recovery(smartflash)

You can also use the droid DNA all in one kit from droid DNA section. Then use the sideload option from this in combination with twrp sideload option, than manual flash Boot .img, also possible with all in one tool by flash kernel

Sent from my HTC Butterfly using xda app-developers app
Yes, you can Update OTA while rooted and even with S-Off.
You can try to extract the recovery.img from the OTA zip file in your internal sdcard download folder.
Just prepare to root again as the OTA will remove the root.

If you Google HTC__j15 quite a number of different devices come up. But he did identify his device as the One XL in the original post.
