[Q] Wifi direct, Cyanogenmod, and Samsung - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've installed the latest stable Cyanogenmod (10.1.2) and was a bit disappointed that wifi direct doesn't work anymore. From reading around, it looks like Samsung has done some funny things with wifi direct that requires proprietary drivers. So, fine, silly Samsung. But is anyone working on a patch for this?
I'm using Fast File Transfer in the meantime, and I feel like I should send the developer flowers or something, but it would still be nice to get wifi dire t going again.

Tried it. It had the same symptoms as every other true wifi direct app, including the built-in service: my SGS3 (stock) and tablet see each other but can't connect, and any file transfers fail before they start. Had no trouble when running stock ICS on the tab.

[App] MLB AT BAT working on unsupported devices

I got the MLB At Bat 2011 app working for non supported devices since so many devices aren't supported that clearly can run it.
YOU MUST HAVE A MLB.TV SUBSCRIPTION TO GET THE GAMES!!
You also need to buy the At Bat 2011 app.
I have a nook color, but should work for any device.
I changed the build.prop to contain the fallowing:
ro.product.model=SCH-I800
ro.product.brand=verizon
ro.product.name=SCH-I800
ro.product.device=SCH-I800
ro.product.board=SCH-I800
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I800/SCH-I800/SCH-I800:2.2/FROYO/EC02:user/release-keys
rebooted and worked. Should be able to chose any supported device and it will work. This is from the verizon galaxy tab.
I'm very much looking forward to trying this today.
Is there some sort of shortcut that could be made so we don't have to manually edit things every time?
EDIT: it's working! Though the supposed "HD" is far from it, and this is streaming over wi-fi.
I will be checking this out with today's free game of the day!
Now, I just need an easy way to switch the build.prop to watch the games.
the build.fingerprint isn't needed to be changed, works without it. Got it working on my nook color, pretty nice. Need to OC it and have a good fast connetion. Still not near HD though.
Good to know about the fingerprint.
Streaming is working great on my Captivate. Connected on wifi, close to HD after about 30 seconds, but if the connection gets bogged down, the picture loses quality fast.
Nice to have it working, clunky as it is...
I find I need a knead perfect 3G or strong wifi to get decent streaming on my droid2 and nook.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk
Will changing these settings have any unintended consequences for other apps or the operation of the phone in general? I have a Galaxy S but don't want to stuff anything up just for MLB At Bat.
nm, build.prop is a system file duh?
Congrats on getting this working, jkabaseball.
Are people getting the streaming working on CM7 Stable? I see that Nightly 37 was suggested before Stable came out. I'm on Stable now, and seeing the option, but only getting the white screen. I'm willing to try switching to 37, but it seems like there'd be no reason to do so, given that it's an older version. (Unless something was taken out before the stable release preventing this from working.)
Doesn't work on my nook with cm7. I even copied the signature.....yes I have sub also.
Cm7 installed on the Emmy
Sigh I had high hopes
I have been successful on cm7 stable on my HTC dhd. On a side note, anyone find a workaround to play blackout games?

Just wanted to follow up, and say a HUGE thanks for the info. I modified the build.prop file like you said, and now I can watch the Cardinals anywhere on my Samsung Mesmerize. Just a note it works great even though I am running Voodoo. The only thing that is different is my swype keyboard won't work anymore, says that it was not meant to be used for my device, oh well, I love Cardinals baseball more than swype so who cares!! Thanks again for the info!!

Other apps that require a specific build.prop might not work. I have a Captivate and the preinstalled Swype does not work while I an using the modified build.prop.
I duplicated my build.prop, renamed the duplicate build.prop.mlb and made the changes. Then when I want to watch baseball, I rename the real build.prop to build.prop.real and rename build.prop.mlb to build.prop and then reboot the phone. I switch it back when I'm done.

I have the sgs4G not working for me and yes I have subscription. Any help? Does this work on tmo. Using the Verizon settings?
Doesn't work on the Xoom either.
jkabaseball: youre awesome!!! Works like a dream on my Cappy!! Not quite in HD, but still so awesome. Now to figure out, like above posts mention, how to navigate around the locale so I can see my Giants games!!! I tried the app for changing locale, but i believe its a bit more involved than just fooling App Market. Thanks a ton jkabaseball

This might be too basic to ask, but - do you also have the paid app, rather than the free one? And is the sgs4g flash-capable? Those are also prereqs, in addition to the subscription.
The build.prop changes I posted is for the galaxy tab on Verizon. You should be able to use another device like droid2 build.prop and Skype should work as well. On my nook I thought the galaxy tab would be best.
Working on spoofing location. It mint be a little harder. MLB is pretty good at determining your location even through a VPN. I'm not sure if they are using gps location, which would be easy to spoof, or the network location where the stream is going to. I haven't got it to work on my pc yet, but will keep on working on android.

Wireless Tether through Infrastructure (Not ad-hoc)

A reboot as ALL that was needed to solve my issue.
Make sure you've got a ROOTED phone.. Mine was rooted, running this kernel, and this ROM..
Download Android Wifi-Tether 3.2 Beta2 apk
Install it
Run it
Menu-Settings
Change Device-Profile
Select Samsung Fascinate
Change Setup-Method
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
Back to main screen
Start Tethering
Voila! You have infrastructure mode tethering, instead of adhoc which is the usual deal. THis is important to folks like me, who run honeycomb tablets like my Asus Transformer, or the Xoom, and need infrastructure wireless networks to tether to.
edit: updated new tether app.
I use wireles tether and it works fine for me its adhoc and I posted it somewherr in here hang on.
Hete it is works like a charm http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...ireless_tether_2_0_8-pre1.apk&can=2&q=Generic

I came from the Droid, and the Droid 2, where I coulld tether via bluetooth, however this is not the case with the Charge. I'm sure that the only reason we havent got an infrastructure mode available yet is because its stilll available for free through the stock app, but is anyone working on this currently? Its an issue we will all have to face at some point... I'd rather do it sooner rather than later.
And before anyone asks, I have tried the wireless tether 3.0 pre14 apk set for the Fascinate. It doesn't work, just sits at "Please wait while starting..." forever...

awesome. works. thanks.
I will say this though, there is no need for infrastructure mode, if you just root your asus transformer with the new Prime 1.5 ROM and kernel, and also have your charge rooted. I'm using the gummycharged rom on my phone. Its unbelievably fast and very stable.
Thank OP works great and was in your boat my wii and Xbox don't like ad-hoc at all!

I'm not trying too flame here but if you are trying to connect a device that doesn't support ad-hoc then you need infrastructure. +1 on the sticky but I an having some issues with the program itself like hanging up or not connecting that sometimes requires a reboot. Thanks for the post!

I'm new and can't post links, but google "android wifi tether" and you will find the google code host with the app.
Newer 3.0 version was released and the older one was removed. Steps still work on Beta1 release. Thanks OP!
Don't enable access control, it doesn't work and it bugs out the program and only way I could get devices to connect again was to clear data in app manager and redo my settings at next relaunch.
If you change the date temporarily back to may sometime to get the stock app to open, adjust your settings as needed. Change the date back to auto and download elixr from the market. Create a 1x1 widget, tap the x, select wireless ap, and create.....watch the magic happen and as far as I know its infrastructure.

You can do that Airsushi. It wont be perfect though. I am running an Asus Transformer that runs Android 3.1, and I rooted it and installed the patch to see ad-hoc. Now I use the standard tethering and have no issues with tethering. Its much more stable than trying to use infastructure mode on the charge.
But for ease, this method is much less complicated. but less stable.
Thanks op. Works great

Hbo Go

Hey guys, from what I understand, the hbo go app used to say this device is not compatible but I recently tried sideloading again using the barebones cm7 Rom which is preconfigured to have a modified build.prop so it can use more apps. So basically it starts up now and I can use it but the problem is that it force closes the moment I click sign in. Is there any solution?

It's worked for me on every version of CM7 that I've tried.
I am running CM 9, so of course it is different, but the issue may have to do with the Kindle itself. I spent some time yesterday on tracking down the APK, even going back to earlier versions and it will not run for me at all.

Yes, every little bit of info may be useful to someone.
I am not sure if others have had issues with HBO Go since the May 4th update. I started getting the force close and was unable to sign in again. Well I am happy to report after finding an older version of the apk file on this very site - I am up and running again. It is the HBO Go 7 apk file.
Does anybody have an older version of the Max Go apk?
I hope this helps some of you.

Anyone have any luck getting this to run with any of the CM9 ROMs? I just get the not compatible message and nothing else. The trick of turning off wifi doesn't make any difference here.

Really? Still not working for me. Using the 1.4 version and still getting the "HBO GO is not supported on this device" message. I am on the Reloaded CM9 ROM. Which one are you using? Do you still have to use the workaround from the stock ROM (turn off Wifi, start app, turn it back on)? That also does not seem to work for me.
I used it today as well. I am on hellfire ICS 1.2.

[In Progress] Hacking the Optimum App for Kindle Fire

Cablevision recently released the full Optimum app with streaming capabilities, but it has only been released for the Kindle Fire. Since the Kindle Fire runs Android, it should be possible for the application to run on any other Android device. This thread will be the attempt at modding the Optimum application to work with all Android devices (2.3+).
Optimum App Download:http://www.mediafire.com/?169999r49rv15q9
Currently Known:
Application asks for root upon opening
Some devices can open and run the app successfully, but must log in and out every use. If not, data must be cleared for every use.

I have tried on my CM9 Evo and CM9 Iconia A500, and in both instances the application works (sometimes I have to wipe data, sometimes it works flawlessly).
The point of this is to modify the application itself, without touching the device files, making it work with almost any version of Android (Gingerbread and up because that is the Kindle Fire version).
So far, I haven't come up with much in the past few days. I'm still looking though.
Also, my thoughts on Cablevision:
I think Cablevision is actually one of the "good guys". They have cheap plans, fantastic service, and they really do want to help their customers. Their TV service is great, and it offers a lot of fantastic channel choices. The Internet is really good, as I always get at least 25 up/down with very low ping (I do enjoy gaming).
I don't like the fact that they haven't come out with a streaming application for Android yet, but it is obvious that they are making progress. I do like watching TV on my laptop, and it is nice to know that I can watch it on an iOS device if I ever get one again. The fact that they have an application for an Android device just shows that they are very close to a full Android release.
I changed buildprop values to resemble kindle fire. It didnt work on my SGS3 stock ICS neither on my toshiba thrive stock ICS

Nice to hear! I love working for them. I used to work at Comcast but I lived in cable vision territory so I thought why not do the same job and get free service lol. They are definitely putting for effort in trying to offer the same experience for both iOS and android. I've been bugging them since I started and I might pursuit the development side. rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.
