I tried rooting.. and im scared I screwed up my phone? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825 I used this and now it boots up like Install, wipe, backup, restore, mount, settings, advanced and reboot. WHAT DO I DO?

You are in recovery. You probably want to make a backup. Then you flash a Rom if you want. Did you do any research on flashing before you did this.

Just go into the Verizon galaxy s3 development area on this forum and find a ROM that u would like. It will explain everything that u need to do. Please read the entire post before doing anything though. And remember. NEVER FLASH AN INTERNATIONAL ROM. that's death for your phone. If its not meant for an sch-i535 (Verizon s3) then do not use it

You're in download mode. Pull the battery. Reboot the phone. Open super user. It should ask to update. Do that.
Go to this site and read this page. Click the download button.
http://www.scottsroms.com/content.p...;-Clean!-Smooth!-Stable!-No-Gimmicks!-★
Then click galaxy s3 (Verizon). Click clean ROM 7. Then towards the top right of the page click download.
DO ALL OF THAT FROM YOUR PHONE SO ITS EASIER
then turn ur phone off. Then hold down volume up+home button+ power button to reboot into recovery. Do a back up. Then wipe your phone. Then install your ROM. follow the on screen instructions and then you're good to go.

THIS. please do plenty of reading before attempting to flash roms, or even root for that matter. why would you root, unlock, and install a custom recovery if you have no idea what the recovery screen looks like ?
SIR. there are plenty of videos on youtube, threads on this site, and information in other places on this subject. read up . that is the only reason any of us know how to answer your questions.
without reading, i am sure as soon as you flash whatever rom you decide on, you will be right back here with more questions. if not BEFORE you even accomplish it. search youtube, and find a video on "how to flash roms using TWRP" there are plenty of videos. watch a couple.
there are also videos on almost every ROM that we have available, so you could check it out before you flash it.
the biggest thing i and others will say is READ READ READ.
good luck!

initial boot will take about as long as it did when you first turned it on out of the box. 2-5 minutes tops. 5 would be strange though. end up getting this figured out?

I actually just wiped data and cache and it booted up within 3 minutes

Thank You

I just want to say thank you for offering the best advice we can give to noobs( I am a noob and I'm not ashamed). I had never even heard of rooting before I got my galaxy s3 and I had no idea what I was doing when I rooted it. But, I got lucky. I found CASUAL and rooted my phone in literally 3 minutes. And the first time I saw the twrp screen I panicked, got lucky again when I chose reboot system, then I got sooooooo lucky when I accepted the OTA and lost my root but didn't have any serious problems. That was over a month ago and I have not rooted phone again because now, after all the reading I've done I can see very clearly how lucky I was. My point is, rooting and modifying our phones is serious business and we should understand what we're doing before we do it. And we should exercise some caution when offering advice.
Good luck to everyone in your endeavors and take care of your lovely little phones!

My noob questions...

This should help other noobs out too. Hopefully someone can answer these questions.
I rooted using the Windows debugfs method. Then unlocked bootloader using EZ Unlock. I then made a nandroid, wiped cache and data and flashed a touchwiz ROM (Beans Build 9).
1. If I want to goto same ROM but new build, do I just wipe cache/data/delvik(sp?) Then install new zip in Recovery?
2. If I want to try a new Touchwiz ROM, what steps do I need to take??
3. If I want to try a non Touchwiz ROM, what steps do I need to take??
4. Is it possible to go back to original stock? Like the way it was out of box.
5. What is the difference in all the different recoveries? I used EZ Recovery but there is a CWM, ROM Manager and a different number of initials of Recovery programs. And I guess I'm asking is if I used EZ but want to use ROM Manager from now on, can I? How?
6. When I'm in Recovery and click restore data will that wipe everything and go back to whatever ROM I was using when I backed up?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I can answer the question about the restore. It does restore your previous rom. I flashed the synergy rom but for the life of me I couldn't get wallet to work even though I reset the account before flashing. After the restore my phone was back to exactly how it was before I flashed it. When you restore it's like it never happened lol

Also to get it like it was out of the box you would need to flash it using a program on your computer called Odin. There are amazing write ups that will explain everything you need to know about all your questions. I would do a search or just review a couple pages of threads in the general, faq, and developers sections. Don't take it personal if you get flamed for asking before searching but people do put a lot of time into the guides to help eliminate the forum from getting clogged with threads that have already been answered.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. And yes I know I will get flamed. And I have searched all these questions but the results I get are like different case scenerios and there's not really a good explanation of the questions I posted. I normally just find tutorials on how to flash/root but not how to change different ROMs and what not. Appreciate it though.

afaik, root or rooted packages require a computer.

My phone is already rooted though. I am just trying to go back to stock and keep my phone rooted without using a computer can you help me with that?

I am not aware of a CWM flashable back-to-stock zip. You need to use a computer and either Odin or Heimdall it back. Qkster said to look at his thread and I recommend following that advice. His Heimdall package works pretty well.

dman's uclb3 CWM flashable
I have never used it, but dman's uclb3 is CWM flashable. You might want to read the thread carefully as always.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22775901
When I asked recently about the confusing (to me) comments about video near the beginning of that thread, it was clarified that video depends on the kernel, and those comments do not apply if you have the latest GB kernels from Entropy or Zen ( which have no video problems)
Others are welcome to chime in if I have missed something important.
Man, I've been through about every post there is about the infuse on every site you can imagine. You know you're at the right place when every other site either quotes somebody from here or just straight up links you back to xda. If you can't find what you're looking for with a simple search on here then you shouldn't be doing what you're trying to do or you have a truly unique problem which is rare.
To get to the point, I don't think you can flash back to stock from cwm but if you succeed in doing so, please post your results and how you did it. If you're trying to fix a bad flash or getting the phone ready to sell or for any other reason, there is no replacing odin in my opinion. I know that flashing a ROM from cwm is super easy, but odin is just a hair less easy. Even if you have to borrow a computer, it should take no more than 10 minutes including download time. Thats my two cents. Take it or leave it. Best of luck to you.

Jelly bean ROMs use a different system partition that cwm can't change. If you flash the stock ROM you will get stuck at the Samsung screen.
If you are in jelly bean you need to Odin or heimdall back to stock.

No worries, I wasn’t taking offense to your comments. I was fishing for information about possible limitations of dman's uclb3 CWM flashable GB package (That info did come later in csandman1977’s post where he identified that package won’t work when coming from Jelly Bean.). Please don't hesitate to share your experience and thoughts here.

I think you’re talking about dman's uclb3 CWM flashable.
As identified by csandman above, it won’t work coming from Jelly Bean. I’m not sure about ICS.
I’m pretty sure it would work fine coming from any Froyo or GB Rom.

[Q] Questions about rooting Verizon Galaxy S3

Hello all,
I have a couple questions regarding rooting my phone
i have a fully stock vrz sgs3 and the only thing ive done to it is loaded a different launcher (nova prime). i want to root my phone so that i can backup everything ive downloaded onto it (contacts, pictures, but most importantly EVERY app ive downloaded) and also slap a rom on there for some unique customizations (was thinking CM10).
I suppose my first question would be, in the process of rooting my phone, will it wipe any/all data and leave the phone like it was when i first open the box?
and if it doesn't, will i be able to backup everything with a backup app (and also which one would be highest on people's lists) before i start getting that rom on there and going nuts making my phone my own?
thank you very much for everyones time and help with this!
happy new year!
slainte!
If you use the one click root method(http://droidmodderx.com/galaxys3/?page_id=159) which by the way is way easier and faster than Odin, you won't lose any of your data, afterwards you will download Titanium backup to backup all of your apps, I'm not sure if there's another app out there but trust me this is the one EVERYONE uses and the best one. Then download EZ-recovery(from the app store) and install the custom recovery CWM using the app itself and download EZ-unlock 1.2 (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/) since 1.4 is buggy, and press unlock to unlock the bootloader and then you can flash all the ROMs you want. You MUST have the bootloader unlock to flash custom ROMs/kernels and remember to always factory reset/wipe cache and dalvik and format system when flashing and don't ever flash a ROM from another carrier because it will brick your device.
Good luck.
I'm guessing you are on JB OTA right?

If so here is the only method to root it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35418324
You woo not lose your data doing it. Also, as a friendly tip download triangle away because this root method will trip your flash counter. Also, I HIGHLY recommend not downloading or following guides from other sites besides here and root, and maybe a select other few. Seen way to many bricks by following random guides.
Sent from my VS920 4G using xda app-developers app
Make sure you follow the root guide according to what software you are running. The ICS method does not work for Jellybean. Rooting will not wipe your data but flashing a ROM will. Just do a Nandroid backup in clock work mod (CWM) thats backs up your data with your ROM as well. You can download Titanium Backup to back up your apps. Sms backup will back up your txts and call logs.

Well put couldn't have said it better,
I would not jump right into an ASOP like CM10 for my first flash, you might want to start with a TouchWiz based rom like Clean rom first. AOSP roms in general take a few more steps to install and still have some occasional issues (data drops, getting stuck in roaming, and loosing IMEI (no data) any of which could lead to a day of anxiety and localized baldness (hair pulling)
I hope you know what your getting into.....You will never be satisfied with a stock rom again

Question
What is the difference between using the EZ-Bootloader or using Goomanager for TWRP?
I am not a fan of using apps just for the sake of it and having 3 of the same on my phone. I have seen people use Goomanager for TWRP, EZ-Bootloader and Rom Manager. All I want is one...so is there an advantage or disadvantage to using TWRP and uninstalling EZ-Boatloader?

EZ-Recovery has the the old TWRP preloaded last I saw but can load latest on sd card and use the app to install it. Goo Manager downloads the latest TWRP directly and installs. Rom Manager is for CWM.

I have all in one tools and memory cleaner to optimize performance. I am usin an ics theme but i feel like im missing something. What kind of things can i do to enjoy the rootness on my mini tablet? It sucks. Lol what can i do now?

Well my friend, we do have our own forum, and recently we got jellybean on our devices thanks to medorval. But here is what you should do, first, get the newest version of Odin on your computer. I use 1.85 i believe, then go download and flash entropy's kernel, which is overclocked for speed and, well, tech stuff. If you need more clear steps, contact me or go to our forum. Just type in galaxy player in the search your device and it should pop up for the 4.0 and 5.0. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you can't find them, I can help.
That is only the start of what you can do.
DO NOT USE MOBILE ODIN. DO NOT. IT BRICKS OUR DEVICE.

besides, do you NEED an sd card to flash kernels and roms? i dont have one =P

No signal

I just flashed CleanROM on my S3, and now I have no signal, and when I do I cant make or receive calls or anything.
I flashed it on my brothers phone before doing it to mine a day before, and his works wonderfully. Should I just give the phone a day? If so, and it doesn't work by tomorrow should I simply flash a new radio or reflash CleanROM?
Check under settings> more settings> mobile networks. You should be set to global setting. If it already is set that way, switch to gsm of CDMA and the switch back to global. That should do it. And obviously make sure your not in airplane mode, sync is on, mobile data enabled, ect.

Ha... Yes it is. Didn't do that with the other phone I did this to.
What should I do? I'll look in the meantime before you respond.

Well did you backup your imei before flashing ROMs, as it was a thing to do in the guides of rooting your phone to begin with?

Well first your going to have to Odin back to the 4.0.4 stock G1 http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/C...w_ship.tar.zip
Then follow this following guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31051731
Or also try this if the above gives you no help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29462348
You do have to re provision on the G1 4.0.5 as it this one only has the menu.
After all is good please you back up your imei just in case something goes wrong again a d to your friend to whoever you flashed the cleanrom for, back theirs up as well.

Of course not. Go figure. I backed up the phone I did it on originally, and didn't need to. Decided the process went so smoothly I wouldn't worry about backing this other phone up, and what do you know I should have. Just my luck. Anyway, I'll try to follow the directions IMEI repair tool. Hopefully this will go smoothly.

I got the IMEI back using the first link without reverting back to anything. However, so far I still have no signal. I guess I have to revert then? The reason I didn't convert is because I found the tool before reading your reply and it didn't mention anything about reverting.

Fixed it. Reverted back to stock 4.0.4, still had no signal, typed in the dialer *2767*3855# and this solved everything.

Glad to hear now backup your imei because it's bound to happen anytime not even I know when it'll happen to me. It's just some precautions unless you wanna go through this whole process again.

Way ahead of you. Got it backed up with 4.0.4. Thanks for your help and patience man. You get a thanks from me.
Also, I think it should be noted for everyone else that after flashing back to stock 4.0.4, you can save yourself a lot of drama by using that code. Also, you do get stuck into a boot loop when reverting back(I and many others did that I read), simply boot into recovery(yes stock recovery) and do a full wipe. This is probably mentioned somewhere though.
