Power button gone crazy! Can I disabled it? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
My TF101 has degenerated to the point of being unusable. The power button is broken, it's like it's getting pressed on/off continuously! So the screen goes off and reappears at high frequency.
It's not software. Tried a bunch of roms including stock (currently on revolution) and all have the same behaviour. In fact the same happens in recovery.
So, pretty much ready to toss it. But I was wondering if there is a software way to "disable" the power button? Ideally I'd use the volume instead? Or perhaps disable it from locking/unlocking the screen?
Can I edit some .kl file somewhere to accomplish this?
Cheers
Lys

[KERNEL] Slide to Unlock

So I came across this in the EVO 3D forums. How hard do you think it will be to port this to our device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346760
It is in development already. See bricked kernel thread for more info.

Anyway to enable this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
And gnex has it
Both Bricked and TamCore have this feature.
Bricked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269247
TamCore: http://files.tamcore.eu/android/?dir=tamcore-kernel
Bricked gives you an option to enable it during installation, while TamCore requires you to flash a zip to enable it, which you can get on the same page, under the name "sweep2wake_enable.zip".
A few kernels already have it.
I am already using it...
Already using it on bricked!
It's nice because you don't have to constantly use your power button to turn on device ! I really love it! It's so easy.

Is there any way to make it more efficient when locking the device? I find that it closes the current application and goes to the home screen (as you swipe the back and home keys when locking your device).
This is quite annoying when using an app like gmote when I may need to immediately unlock my phone again to pause/play adjust volume etc, as I find that the app has been terminated when putting the device to sleep.
I really like the idea of not having to mash my power button any more than necessary, so using the sweep to lock would be ideal. I also noticed that even in the demo video of sweep to wake, the menu button gets pressed as the phone is locked (you can see the launcher menu appear for a second before the device locks).
Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I wanted to get some guidance before posting any sort of feature requests in the dev forum.
Thanks guys!

Sometimes it will pull up the power window, it will go back, back out of an app...instead of posting here...post in show-p threads.
It's a good feature, the bricked & faux kernels have it as far as I know!

Brilliant idea! This actually works as desired, and it doesn't seem to activate the home button in the sweep/swipe either. Now I just need to get in the habit of skipping the back key.

There's a thanks button.
However, I don't see how this is practical much. I only lock using sweep because it's a good shortcut to exit current app, go to home & luck.

Softkey Enabler for XL

Just wondering if there is a mod similar to the Softkey Enabler for the International One X? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797850
I tried that mod on CM10 on my One XL (AT&T) but hit hangs on boot.
Thanks
Ask your fav dev to enable it, I'm not sure why you would want this?

for one. I replaced my screen so I have screen separation issues.
would be nice to enable softkeys (disable soft keys) so that the LEDs from the capacitive buttons don't shine through.

To each their own, I would just disable the backlight on the buttons
Like I said just ask a dev to make a patch, most will be happy to when they have time

Thanks for the info. I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus, and I like the soft bar. The rotation of the softkeys is nice, and I tend to hit the silkscreen by accident either when holding the phone.
Being a bit new on this forum, any suggestions a dev that may be amenable to requests
Thanks
The hugest reason for enabling soft keys are for iphone people. We are extremely used to having "safe" areas to grab a phone, esp in landscape. I have used an android phone for six months and I don't know where to grab the thing in landscape. I'm always accidentally touching the home or back button and going between apps, it's annoying. And it really hampers usability. This is something that I can't get used to. I definitely think Apple is right to have a hardware old-fashioned home button, or at least some bezel space. This is why I want the soft keys patch for the One XL.

decompile framework-res.apk for the ROM you are using.
I think softkey enabling is in bools.xml.. if not search through strings, arrays, or public.xml
When you find it and change it, recompile and push it to /system/framework

TUTORIAL: How to Turn Off the Hardware Keys - Function, Lights and Vibration
This will work for any AOSP ROM.
1) I used AOKP 4.2.1, you can disable your hardware keys(sort of) editing 2 files in you system/usr/keylayout folder: keypad_8960.kl & synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl
Edit these entries in both files, you must open then as a text file and be using a root explorer.
Set key 102, 139, 158, 217 to FOCUS, this will make them do nothing when you are in every app except in camera, when they make it focus.
Save each file after editing and reboot.
2) To turn off vibration go to settings/sound and turn off vibrate on touch.
3) To turn off other hardware key backlights use: AdjBrightness
In AdjBrightness turn off the buttons by pressing the button marked "buttons" under the light toggles. To lock then off so they dont come back on after locking and unlocking, press settings key in that app to bring up a menu, then press Option. Then, under buttons check the first one, "Lock off button lights".
That is it you are done. The only thing is you have it open AdjBrightness after a reboot so it can apply the settings.

[Q] Any volume wake mode for the ICS leak?

Hello,
I am on the official OTA for ICS on the Atrix 2 in India. I found that it does not have the feature of waking on volume key. Can anyone help out with a mod? I found some threads but were not sure if the solutions were compatible with the phone and the kernel version.
Thanks,
Sayantan
I changed evfwd.kl and Generic.kl (added WAKE after volume up and down keys) and that did the trick. Also reviewed other key layout files and decided that they need not be changed.

I have made these edits to the files mentioned under system/usr/keylayout/ and restarted the phone, but without success. The phone will still not wake up as a result of hitting either volume key. Are there any other possible files that need changing?

How are you making your edits, using Root Explorer or similar? If so, you should delete the .bak file it creates for /keylayout (but make sure you make a backup of the original before fooling around with it), the reboot and see if that clears things up...

I just gave that a try (using ES File Explorer for everything) and still no dice. It won't wake up using volume keys no matter what, even with the .bak files deleted. Not sure if it makes any difference but I'm running ScV7 first leak edition. Any other suggestions/ideas...?
You need to have the screen lock set to None to wake using volume keys. Any other mode like slider, pattern etc will require the power key to wake.

Also, the files applicable for this may be different for the ROM version you are using (SCv7 first leak). Can you list out the contents of your Keylayout directory please?

Sorry, it took me a couple of days before I got a chance to retry this hack. Changing the lock setting to "None" (was previously on "Slider") did the trick and allowed the edits of the Generic.kl and evfwd.kl files to kick in successfully and allow screen wake by the volume keys. Thanks sayantan for the extra bit of guidance.
Ideally it would be great to be able to wake the phone using volume but still have the security of the lock screen available, but I suppose at the moment that's just not a possibility. Perhaps a future hack of some sort will find a way to enable that.
Right now, with lock set to "None" if a call comes in while your phone's in your pocket, and you ignore or miss the call completely, the phone then stays on and goes to the Home screen and stays there until it automatically times out and goes back to sleep. That's a lot of opportunity for accidental screen presses by the side of your leg while the device is active and accepting input. There doesn't seem to be any way to make it turn back off by default after a missed call. Maybe that can be changed in the future too.
EDIT: Right now I'm using the combination of Smart Actions along with the free application "Screen Off and Lock" to cause the Atrix 2 to switch the screen off after a missed call, which seems to work most of the time.
Cheers...

I don't think theres a other way to unlock honestly...
I DO know theres a way to remap the buttons, so that you would (as example) be able to use the volume buttons for unlocking the screen. But I would have no idea how it actually works, too long ago since I saw it somewhere...
But about your power/unlock button, did it function normally before, or has it been bad since you got the phone?
Maybe there's some dirt or something in the button blocking it partly?

I have the same problem with the power button. It's not your fault, it's just the wrong way the button was made.
I use 2 apps to lock/unlock my phone by shake( and you can also unlock by hand gestures over the sensor- next to the front camera). You can try ShakeMe and you can also try to use Advanced Screen Control. Just install these 2 apps and play with the sensitivity and you'll find the perfect fit.
These 2 apps seem to be the best out of the bunch that you can find on the Play store.
Tell me if they work!

If you root, go to /System/Usr/Keylayout/
Edit Generic.kl file.
Adding 'WAKE' after Volume down and up.
Then go to setting>security>screen lock to none
Maybe some other expert member can figure out how to make this working when enable screen lock.
Sorry my english.

You can have screen lock on and use volume down to unlock:
- With a root access file manager like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer go to /system/usr/keylayout
- Open in text editor file fih_gpio-keys.kl
- Look for key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
- Replace the "VOLUME_DOWN" with "POWER".
- Save and reboot.
This essentially maps your volume down key as a power button. If you need to reduce the volume push volume up then use the on screen slider to set volume

Power Key problems

Recently my power button has gone haywire when i press it, it registers as a long press and brings up the power menu. my screen will cut off and come up randomly sometimes it brings up the power menu. im currently running the latest version of MOAR but couldn't find anything to remap/disable the hardware keys. Does anyone know of an rom that will let me remap/disable the hardware keys or an app that would let me do the same. any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

You can always try "button savior" from google play but if you want a rom that has navigation keys then there are tons such as illusions rom and most of those other 4.2.2 roms

The power button failure is a known issue with the S3. They usually replace the phone. FYI. It's commonly known as 'sudden death syndrome'

I looked up the SDS and some aspects of this lead me to believe this isint my issue what I'm having my power button ( I'm guessing due to using over time ) has become sensitive is the best way to put it the slightest touch will bring up as I did a long press to bring up the power menu so having it in my pocket will randomly bring it on and bring the power menu up. I'm still trying to figure out how to disable the key its self. If anyone had any input on how to disable it that would be a good temp fix till I can get an replacement
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Well I disabled mine, just pulled the damn thing off and made a shortcut to shut the screen off....works for now until I get it replaced.
To follow up on this, a month and a half later I put my button back in. Guess what, works perfectly.
.....and time to sell lmao
