Gettingmy S4 today! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Waiting around for UPS.. How I hate waiting! I certainly hope its worth the upgrade from the S3. I'll have to compare them when I get it. I'm glad I got the Black mist version.

If you care about rooting and roms DO NOT start it up with your sim card in. I would recommend you remove the sim card and do not connect to wifi. Run the root exploit and installed custom recovery and a custom rom or delete the update apk. If your phone gets the update who knows when you will be able to root/flash recoveries again. (it updates against your will)

Also soon as you root it and install a recovery, flash the omega Rom from the International forum (I9505) then flash right after( without rebooting) the Katoonez kernel (from the at&t forum). You'll be very satisfied.

The Google edition rom in the at&t section is better imo

[Q] stock rom

Hi, I really need some help cause i am new in this (i owned htc desire g7 bravo),
I have bought htc one x at&t mobile. Hopefully by the next week it would be here. I was thinking to root it so I can delete all at&t crap apps. After some search I found out that at&t models always get the updates with a big delay time. So I want to find a stock rom (clean from branded carrier apps). I forgot to mention I live in Greece.
Most important for me is:
1)Greek language and keyboard
2)upgrades “on air”
3)stable and fast (stock sounds perfect)
4)of course choosing north American type means I wand better battery life so it’s going without saying that battery life is important
Any suggestions? I look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237 but no luck. Saying at&t on stock roms means there are at&t apps right?? Thanks a lot in advance!

A rooted stock rom is probably your best bet. Custom roms usually remove the OTA function for obvious reasons. Once rooted, the bloatware is easy to remove.
I think you have to load the Greek keyboard separately but I don't know. I think there is one rom with all the languages turned on but it's not stock.

Any other has ota updates and don't mess with bootloader or anything else??They are just rooted nad stock right?

The stock rooted roms should work on any One XL--they are usually debranded. But they are not all exactly the same--I would review the OP to be sure.
Only downside of stock rooted... You take the att ota, you break root access!!

Yes. Don't take the OTA.
Be patient and wait a few days for the devs to update their roms.
It's simply the downside of being rooted and rommed.

Yes.
On any Android device if you are rooted, don't update by OTA.
Its really that simple. How many times does this need to be said?
At a minimum, you will lose root. At the worst, you will not be able to root again (depending on what was changed in the OTA) or get stuck in a bootloop (or otherwise not be able to boot).

Definitely understandable bro. I recommend everyone to enjoy that honeymoon period of a new phone first, then customize the hell out of it. Nothing wrong with your doing, but like others have said don't take an update OTA if your stock. Just pop back in when you ready to really see what this phone is capable of

Even if you are on the stock ROM and rooted, you should not ever ever ever install an OTA, for the reasons I've stated in post 8 above.
If you want to install a new firmware version, they almost always get posted in Development in pre-rooted, but otherwise stock form, very soon after the OTA starts rolling out (sometimes even before the OTA, in case of a leak). Those are safe to install.
Thanks for the the explanations, guys.

I've taken OTAs on my stock rooted Nexus 7 without any problems. But Nexus devices are a special case--I would never recommend trying it on anything else.

Sure, there are exceptions. Apps like OTA Rootkeeper sometimes work too (but don't think it ever has on the One X) to keep root after an OTA.
I was giving the "short story" rule for n00bs to go by. The "long story" is not to accept an OTA unless you have researched in advance that it will work (such as from other users here); or you intend to be the guinea pig and live the with the consequences, whatever they may be.
Too many folks here jumped on the 2.20 OTA when it first rolled out, then came on here crying "Ohhh sh1t I lost root, and its not rootable".
"Don't ever OTA on a rooted device" is a good rule to live by, unless you reearch on here and learn otherwise. On the huge majority of devices, the OTA will not even install on a rooted device, anyway. And rooted versions of the latest firmwares always get posted here. So there is really no reason to gamble and take the OTA.

I don't quite understand, I mean the 2.20 firmware is rootable now, is this still unrootable even there's a way to root it?
And also I'm expecting the stock jelly bean rom which is said to be rolling out this month, and I don't care losing root for couple of weeks, do I have to do anything before I install the OTA? Or should I just install the RUU instead?

What happened was that people who took the OTA lost root, and it was months before someone found an exploit. That may happen again with JB if you take it.
It might take the devs a few days to a week to update their roms. Just be patient.
If you absolutely can't wait, you should be stock before taking an OTA.

Neither. As I already said, it will show up in a pre-rooted, TWRP flashable, but otherwise stock ROM in the Development subforum. It usually takes about a day before a dev gets ahold of the OTA file, and posts a pre-rooted version of it. Just flash that. And the way the OTAs roll out, you'll probably see the pre-rooted version on XDA before you even get the OTA notification.
You should just erase from your brain the concept of accepting the OTA.

There's nothing for JB because it hasn't been released yet. There are rooted versions of many of the other firmware versions in the development section; just look in the compilation thread at the top, which has them all listed.
So,i was lucky i started it before i get the phone on hands! I really thought that at&t takes a lot of time to give ota but it is not so long time!(max a month i think) I think JB hasn't pop up not even for htc(no-carrier branded)phones, always talking about s4 version or 4g as it is called. All stock rooted roms i check seemed good but most of times it was still branded. So to sum up i think i will stay with the stock rom till jb pops up,then i will root the phone deleting all at&t apps...!(only way i know to delete rom's apps is with at least root acces right is there any other?)
I think it is needed to be said againe that even if you have stock rom and ota pops up you dont't do the update but you get the update from xda cause stock root rom+ota can cause problems!
Silly question (i think) unrooting and then ota is as dengarous as stock root rom and ota????(it sounds ok and you avoid re-installing your apps)
All i need (FOR NOW OF COURSE) is a clear rom and get the original "hTC_bootup_one" and "hTC_downanimation" zip files to the right place to avoid at&t meeting every time i go to menu and every time i power my up phone!

Do you have root? I know there's a way to download and grab the zip from the phone if you have root. Otherwise the other method you suggested may work.
EDIT: Root method is easier as you just download, use file manager to get it from /cache, and then you can upload it for others. I don't know which root methods do and don't work for your device however. Logcat can be done, you'll just be looking through a lot of lines of logs possibly.

its true what you say, i have been trying logcat but it shows a ton of lines, and im searching for the hotword .zip or zip or update and no results give me a URL, maybe samsung is cloaking the update from logcat or they found a way to hide it, in my phone the root i know it works is kingo root, but when im rooted the phone does not let me download the update, it says "your phone has been modified, updates are not available"

[Q] Can I root 4.3 ?

Hello everyone,
I had to send my phone back to Verizon due to hardware issues (I was rooted and running 4.1.2...). The new phone came with 4.3. Is it possible to root this? I saw in the main root guide that if i tried using that method, i'd brick my phone. So if you can point me to a guide for rooting 4.3, i'd like to get a good rom flashed on this thing..
thanks,

I can verify this method. I just used it on my device.
Enjoy.

Thanks for posting this. I've gone through a long drawn out process trying to install a custom recovery on my d801 G2. I tried flashify, twrp installer, freegee, nothing worked for my phone. Have had to revert back to stock multiple times because my phone wouldn't function properly. I'm typically pretty good with rooting, and this g2 has had my quite frustrated =P Just wanted to double check that this would in fact work with no issues on a 4.4.2 d801 phone. Would love some feedback from others! Thanks

I did both these to my 801 that came with kk 4.4.2 from the store. towelroot did its thing, install supersu from the play store, reboot, run autorec and let it do its thing. reboot to recovery. profit.

Awesome to know, thank you very much! Any idea how easy of a process it is for 4.2.2? I briefly looked into it, but didn't find a whole lot of clear cut info. Thanks again

I appreciate the link. Sorry if I didn't specify, but I'm actually looking for installing the recovery on 4.2.2. I'll most likely just use the above method for 4.4.2, but it's always nice to have a back up plan

If you are already rooted... just use Flashify and use this TWRP img. - LINK
Boot into recovery and then flash the newest TWRP... 2.7.0.0 or 2.7.1.0
I've had issue with 2.7.1.0 save backups correctly, so I stick with 2.7.0.0
You can also use PhilZ CWM Advanced Edition - LINK
EDIT: I posted the link to PhilZ CWM Advanced Edition for the Samsung GS3... Fix and sorry

I noticed that some of you worry about an update while being rooted. If you are rooted more than likely there will be a rooted version of your rom to flash via recovery. Dont worry about an update as long as you can flash an updated rooted rom.

Do the uploaded stock ROMs still come with all the TMO features? (Wifi Calling, ISIS, etc).

Who's still unrooted & on 4.1.2??

Just curious to know if there are any vzw S3 owners that are still unrooted AND on 4.1.2? I am. I assume there aren't many of us left. My reason for still being on 4.1.2, I keep deferring the ota but I become too lazy to invest into rooting but still keeping my hopes that one day I will have the will power to do so!

I'm rooted and on 4.1.2 deodex stock. The kernel is unlocked still. I got rid of the constant update warning by deleting the one recommended file. This phone is so old I don't remember all the steps to get here anymore. I'm sure the threads that I followed are still here buried so deep cause they're so old and ancient. Sorry, can't help you find them.
I'm super happy with it and with my unlimited data and a fully working TiBU Pro and tethering, I have no reason to update. Until I'm ready for the next greatest phablet sometime after next month.

Wow man, I kept my backup for 4.1.2 but never looked back on rooting and unlocking, which you still have the option to do. I would not take any OTAs as the BootLoader will be locked permanently and word is verizon has been finding ways to block root
Here's the thread for those of you still on 4.1.2 and looking to unlock and root, this tool is pretty simple but you need a pc

People running 4.1.2 should do the following if they want to run deodexed 4.3 stock (locked bootloader stripped out) or 4.4.4 AOSP roms like CM/PA/AOKP/etc.
1. Towelroot to root
2. EZ-Unlock to unlock bootloader with LE6 bootloader
3. Install TWRP recovery through TWRP Manager
4. Flash invisiblek's MF1 firmware
5. Flash the NE1 radio (I don't think a zip of it by itself exists)
6. Flash your rom of choice

Agree somewhat with that. Casual works just fine for those on 4.1.2 also. I used it when I unlocked and rooted and never looked back, it's also in the previous post before yours

Alternatively you could just look up one click methods in google. You should just be able to click a button and walk away. I remember it even putting on a recovery as well...

Some 1-click methods are quite questionable and dangerous though

Just to answer the original question, you are not alone. I am also unrooted on 4.1.2 for the same reason. Thanks to the others here for posting tips so I'll know where to look when I have time.

Some people just choose not to root but most take the OTA, props to you for not taking the ota though

anyone using Evdo? can you share your configuration ?
Still rockin' Cleanrom 7! No joke..
My wife's been using the GS3 I gave her and I had it flashed to the stablest rom at the time.
It's getting some age on it for sure and acting wonky so I'm trying to figure out what I should do with it.. In the hunt for what to do to keep it a solid worker for the Mrs. Heck, last time I flashed anything it was that rom on this old GS3 to get her going. Yes, I went to the dark-side, so haven't been a flashoholic like my previous android days. So now I gotta learn up so I can fix this thing. Been a while.. huh
A testament though for Scott's kicking Cleanrom for this phone. What a beast to hang on so long and fairly decently on this phone.
What to do?
Considering trying to odin to a stock rom or something to do an OTA, which I know will lock it's b-loader, or some other option for a pretty solid TW updated rom of some kind.
Reading up now in here to find out.

Yup it sure can. As long as it's on 4.1.2 or earlier the bootloader can be unlocked. As far as rooting it can be rooted even up to 4.4.2

Jealous!!!
I wish my phone still was on 4.1.2, after my lovely wife being a little nosy, by mistake took the OTA to 4.3, i've been suffering running TW on my phone. You guys are lucky.

just an occasional lurker, but I'm also still on 4.1.2 for the same reasons.
haven't gotten around to rooting, don't want to deal with many of the hassles that came with the OTA. I defer the OTA every day.
got til June before I hit my next upgrade....will see if I can last that long.

That has to be annoying deferring the update on a daily basis. I didn't waste anytime myself with unlocking and rooting when I got my phone. I knew better than to trust VZW
