Is the reason you posted here because you can not find your way to the Star N9588 Device threads Did you use the search and get tonnes of references to your device without knowing who what or where to post confusing isn't it.

As RD voetbalremco suggested, it would be great to have MTK sub-device like MT6573, MT6515, MT6575, MT6517, MT6577, MT6589 and a general "MT65xx" development section to post anything that works on all the mediatek devices will be best instead as of now...

That would be great all in one place

I agree too @yuweng we could really do with some experienced forum administrators to give us some advice on what would be the best way to structure things so people can easily get to where they want to be.
Maybe we could get some examples or recommendations of the structure and content of the perfect forum layout.

Great idea!
While we organize things, it would be nice to have a first post with a few resources. Maybe two three sections, something like General info (links to mtk platforms specs, links to official manufacturers sites, etc), Modding (general root for mtk devices, mtk droid tools, how to build a cwm for a new device, etc.), ROMs (LeWa, plain Android modded ROMs, etc.).
I have a few links bookmarked, send me a PM or better email and we'll try to sort them out so you can post them, if it makes sense ofc.
BTW have you heard the news that Xiaomi will apparently released a MIUI official version for a few MMT6589 devices in the next few days? Fantastic news!

Guys we do phone forums not chooser forums. All you have to do is show active development for a device with recoveries, roms, unlocks, ect. Then request the "device" gets a forum. If the admins think the device deserves a forum it will get one. As you see no other chip got it's own forum. And as for Xiomai I would not get too excited as none of their devices will get a forum here.

I totally agree with zelendel
For example
MMX canvas HD a116 is a mt6589 device and was released march onwards.
Got more publicity as well as development.
Got many ROMs, mods, apps etc
They requested a forum and they got it.
So those devices which got more devs and mods will surely get sub forum for their device

I'll be honest that device slipped threw the crack. As the OEM doesnt release the kernel source it violates the GPL and in doing so breaks our rules. That was the reason for the portal post calling them out about it. You are right though. The more development a device gets the better it's chances are.

[ROM][4.3][UNOFFICIAL]CarbonRom

About Carbon
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. We are dedicated to fast, stable, and feature-filled roms, honesty and communication with our users, and openness with our code. We like frequent builds, with the very latest and greatest hardware support and fixes. We strive to not only provide you with the best rom we can build, but also to give back to the Android community and our fellow developers. For us, this is about creating something we can be proud of and hope you will enjoy.
Please feel free to look at, build, and use our code on CarbonDev GitHub.
We would like to thank CyanogenMod for their device trees, framework/settings mods and their code that was incorporated into this project. We also extend our gratitude to the devs whose code that we have incorporated. Proper authorship has been maintained and can be viewed on our repository.
Special thanks also go to Slim Rom for some of their features, PA, AOKP, and anyone else we may have borrowed commits from that hasn't been mentioned here. If you feel you have been unfairly left out, please - let us know.
While we make every effort to test these builds as much as possible, we are not responsible for anything that may happen to your device, family, pets, or perception of reality. We ask that you do your part to know your device and know how to recover from problems before you flash! If you have questions, ask your fellow users or ask us in #teamcarbon on freenode IRC.
Features
Simply stated, we can't really list features here. There are too many and they change too frequently, and we now support a truly insane number of devices. Chances are, if you like a feature, we have it already. Seriously.

Support
We spend an astonishing amount of time developing this software. We can't spend much time on XDA as a result, so if you need support, please try the following:
1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our goo.im page linked above. It's new, but expanding fast. Just like us!
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Join our G+ Community: http://community.carbon-rom.com This is where we spend the bulk of our time and the best way to reach us and other community members. We update and frequent this community far more than XDA, simply due to time constraints and the convenience of G+.
5) Ask a question on our IRC channel. Connect to #teamcarbon on irc.freenode.net or click here. You'll find several other Carbon fans and usually one or more devs as well. Please be polite.

I did manage to get it to boot after a fresh install on system 3 but since wifi wasn't working, I rebooted the phone. Unfortunately, everytime I go to system 3, it's stuck at the black screen.
Haven't heard from any of the other guys who have installed it, so I'm not sure if that's just a problem with me or someone else is having it too.

I have tried this ROM for a couple of hours and everything seems to be working except GPS. GPS does not work.
It's a pity, because the UI is very nice and elegant and apparently run smooth.
Is it possible to fix GPS?. Thanks.
Where are the kernel sources?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036433
Like usualy chinesee roms wich does't read the rules ... Post the sources
Try to keep the development forum CLEAN! No offtopic posting and no questions.
Use the report button in an offending post to let us mods know we need to take action. Dont take matters into your own hands!!!
Sources need to be posted for all kernels!!!
You need to use TAGS like [ROM] or [KERNEL] and so on as used in all dev forums throughout XDA
Any disputes between developers should be handled by pm. No public posting in a dev thread regarding these matters
Rom issues should be discussed within their respective threads
Thread titles should ALWAYS coincide with ROMS ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD!!! No advance notification of incoming ROM through thread title. A changelog for the yet unreleased Rom can be included in the OP or in another post CLEARLY MARKED as EXPECTED CHANGELOG
Posting in the development section means automatic ACCEPTANCE of the above Rules
All posts that are NOT about ROM development, or development in general will be closed or deleted and posters that will choose to disregard the previous guidelines will be infracted.
OP, you have 48 hours to post links to kernel sources, otherwise we will close this thread.
Here it is, mysterious kernel.
I believe you don't have to post BeastMode sources, lol.
EDIT: ROM is really nice and smooth, very interesting UI, but needs to get bloatware cleaned and apps like browser replaced for international/english alternatives + include gapps.

Why not? OP has to at least post link to OP of that kernel where there is a link to sources. And it's not your job, so keep out of that discussion.

OK, 48 hours over, still no link to kernel source/OP. Thread closed.

There's a "help thread" for each flagship and the Nexus 5 has been unveiled yesterday!
If you are starting on XDA please read this: XDA New User Guide
Need help? Give detailed information: ROM (version), kernel (version), mods... you are currently using. These information are very useful to be able to help you. Cheers.
And don't forget this: NO Best ROM/Kernel threads
If you want to answer (even for a point of view) please answer gently and/or point in the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself.
In Post 2 you'll find a few links that can be useful for general stuff.
Ask any question here: adb, fastboot, bootloader, specific apps, hardware, drivers...
When you try to get an answer, try to describe your situation as detailed as you can, at least what ROM and kernel you are using.
This is to be used to point people in the right direction.
Example:
Q: How can i unlock my Nexus 5?
A: Go post no2, link 7
No spoonfeeding, user pointed in the right direction, don't forget to thank useful answers. :good:

Perfect. Now let's wait for people to not read the stuff in post #2.
I guess I'll be the one to get the questions started then
This may actually be better suited to it's own thread if this branches off into more of a discussion.
Even though this question is more related to 4.4 than the N5, it's still relevant so here goes...
Since the announcement of 4.4 and the N5, I've been reading most of the articles posted. Over the last couple of days I've read that the native screen recording capabilities are somewhat limited as of right now, as the device still needs to be hooked up to a computer and can only record 3 minutes of content.
What's the likelihood of this either being improved via a future update OR a developer improving it to include more realistic usage and what kind of things would need to be done to include such changes?

Since its just an adb command, I would think that you could run it using a terminal emulator on the phone. I haven't actually tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

WARNING: FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK
As always I am not responsible for any damage you do to your device.
This is for folks to explore at this point and possible develop any root and/or bootloader exploits. Of course if you have an emergency this might be nice to have too.
This should ideally recover your phone back to stock, however, it is unlikely that this will reset any counters, e-fuses, and/or q-fuses that may trip due to tinkering with the phone.

Let's get this party started
Any reason you say don't flash odin yet? Any question of the validity of the file, or just cautioning not to do something if you don't need to?

Just a caution at this point. I guess I can remove that, however, I was going to let folks poke around the files first.
Root baby....root!!!
Show them what you got XDA developers!
Next steps for those who are going to try to find a root method:
1. Download tar
2. Find start addresses and offsets
3. Analyze with your favorite analysis program
4. Check for kernel source
5. Check if kernel is patched for all known vulnerabilities
6. Start irc channel for galaxy s5
7. Gather devs with S5 and discuss possible methods of attaining root

Thank you for outlining this as I wouldn't even know where to start.
Having said that - we have a channel on freenode: http://webchat.freenode.net/ - #SGS5
Any guides to get me started on looking at addresses and offsets. I know I am capable, just have to learn what I am looking for and what tool to use (Windows preferably). I am guessing that we are looking for empty space in the memory that can be written to?
A few of the devs I know who could crack this don't want anything to do with a Verizon SGS5. The advice I get is go buy an dev or unlocked version. I can't necessarily blame them as they get crapped on when they put lots of work into something like this. Especially with little to no payout.

Yeah we've run into a similar situation over in the VZW s4 section. We're still fighting to find a bootloader workaround and a root method for the impending kitkat ota. Figured you guys might as well get started lol. I posted how to find start addresses in the op here

Just what I was thinking!
Very excited to see what turns out. I have no developing background but am desperately in need of root. Moral support being sent your way :good:
Root and Recovery
I have very little experience rooting devices. This I was hoping to make my first. The download booster along with the camera were major selling points but Big Red removed the download booster. I was able to find the download booster through an alternate launcher, but can't change the mobile network type to get it to function.
Hopefully there will be a root so I can use the tethering and use the download booster.
Why in hell was this moved to general ?
It is the very first step in making a rom, rooting, or finding a way to weasel in a boot method.
It is everything to do with development, and nothing to do with general.
noob mods.

I moved the thread some time ago, as I personally do not believe uploading of stock firmware is development. I personally feel all stock firmware should be maintained in a single thread in general.
This "noob mod" has rooted or unlocked (as in found the vulnerabilities and written the exploit, not just running someone else's exploit) more devices than anyone in this thread, and most people in this community.
Pretty sure I know what the first steps are in researching and developing exploits, probably more so than anyone posting here.
This kind of insult and behavior is one of the reasons people with the ability to develop these exploits are stepping away from doing so publicly. Continuing this kind of behavior, were going to start ending up with fewer and fewer people willing to work on such projects.
Good luck on your endeavor.

Please talk to your Devs again...since the payout (even though I know all won't, but I would still expect 75%) is now almost $9,000 to find root...and I'm sure no one would crap on them for this!
