My Surface RT will only turn on when plugged into mains power and cuts out as soon as I remove the charging cable. I've tried refreshing and resetting but it's still doing it, even though the battery says it's full.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be my battery has died?

I would contact microsoft or the original vendor about a warranty claim. That definitely isn't right.
I am now on my third RT because of a battery issue with my second. It had about half battery, shut down on me, and would not turn back on even when plugged in. A battery indicator would flash when I tried powering it on. By the time my replacement arrived the battery had completely drained and reset itself. It took a charge and started up no problem, but I packed it up and shipped it back anyways since the claim was already active. I included a note with it indicating what had happened and my theory of the problem going away after the battery completely drained. They apparently were okay with it because they took the hold off of my account for the new RT.

I had my phone for 3 months. It did this issue before and I removed the battery, it started. Now, it doesn't start with or without the battery. I plug it and press the power for 10 seconds, nothing happens.
I had the phone running for like 3 days till the battery completely drained.
I plugged the phone and I feel it's warm on the camera area and still doesn't start after charging for a while. Total black screen!
I am on CM7 and CWM recovery installed. Any ideas?

Since the battery drained completely it may take an hour or better on charge to get enough juice to restart.
The phone can't start without the battery? with just the charger power?

Ya it just needs to get some serious juice on it before it starts weird issue but mine does the same thing. Plug it in to charge with battery and leave it for about 10+ minutes and it should start up with the plug in.

It's been plugged in for a long time.. Nothing yet...
and when it's charging, it usually displays a battery charge animation...
but the screen is totally black
I've never attempted to turn it on without the battery, but with mine, when the battery has completely died, I can plug it in and turn it on within 15-30 seconds and use it (as long as it's still plugged in). USB charge, I have to wait a little longer, though.
The battery was ok I had no problems with it and I checked the battery status yesterday it was "4 from 100 points" and "Good" health.
The phone did that with me before but it started charging when I detached the battery and inserted it again. I think it was some sort of hanging up and the battery had to be detached even if the phone was off!
It workedddd! finally!
As I said... I had to detach the battery and the power completely and reinsert the battery... This is really weird :S

Sounds like a bad battery. Taking li-ion down to fully discharged damages them. The batteries have protection circuitry but if you take it down to nothing and don't charge it right away you could have done permanent damage. If a li-ion is damaged in this way it will never take a charge again. Get a new battery and see if that fixes your problems.
I have now had this problem twice this week. I have read other posts that sound similar but the issue seems different.
Twice I have shut down my phone at night. With FULL battery. The next morning, I could not turn the phone on. It would vibrate when I hit power button but not come on at all.
Both times I plugged it in and saw that the battery was COMPLETELY drained. I have seen threads where people post about some battery drain overnight, but this was an entire drain, with the phone off.
This is a major issue obviously as both times the next morning I was on the go and had zero battery life.
Any ideas of what this can be? Does it sound like a physical battery issue? Is the phone maybe not actually shutting down and getting caught in some battery draining process?

The best way to test the shutdown issue is pulling the battery after it seems to shut down. Try pulling it for a few seconds and replacing it, but leaving the device off. If that produces the same result, try leaving the battery out overnight.
This seems to only be happening if I leave the battery in the phone.

Im not sure but I feel like there may have been a buzz as it turned itself off (not sure if its always there need to experiment further). I picked it up and hit buttons to make sure it wasnt just in standby. It wasnt. it was OFF.
Next morning, no battery.
Any ideas? Id love some help as this is becoming a pretty big problem for me.
Have you ruled out a hardware issue already? If not then call the carrier.

This actually happened to me a night before last as well - twas the first night running Smooth Ice 5.1. Are you on that by chance? Not knowledgeable enough to really comment on whether or not that could be it, but it'd be something to eliminate.
I switched to the new leak last night and the battery life has been excellent off charger all day, for what it's worth.
I am on stock everything.
I am still trying to diagnose the problem.
It seems that when I Power Off, occasionally at the end of the power done I will get a Vibrate. When that happens, I think it is draining while switched off.
When the Power Down happens and I dont feel the vibrate, so far I have not experienced the drain.
Does that perhaps give anyone ideas about what might be happening? Some kind of locked in Process or App? Any likely culprits? Any diagnostics that can show, if it does drain, what drained it?
In the past when it drained I plugged it in to charge and checked battery stats, but it showed Display as the largest consumer. Does the About Battery stats reset each time you plug in and start charging?

It always vibrates when you power off, at least mine does.
The battery stats reset after a full charge has been achieved.
I have no idea what would be discharging it while off besides a bad battery.
Put the BetterBatteryStats application on there. The stock Battery Use GUI interface that is built into the firmware will not show you details enough, it will just show what application used the cpu for X amount and caused the battery to go down X amount.
Put BetterBatteryStats on there to find out what is causing the phone to get drained so quickly. Seems like its not going in deep sleep mode and there is some partial wakelock that is keeping the phone from going into deep sleep. That app will tell you what service or application is holding the largest wakelocks and amount of time it does it for. This helps to determine the issue. Without this, you are just speculating on the problem with the built in Battery Use stats/graph in the Status screen.

Something else I noticed...
Over the last few data, sometimes when I power down the phone, it goes through the powering down process usual, but as soon as its done, the phone vibrates and powers right back on...
Anyone experience this or an idea why that would happen?
Just a thought; If I'm charging my phone with a generic charger (500 mA) and shut it off, it will reboot.
If I'm charging with either the factory wall charger or a 12 volt that triggers AC charge it won't.

The reboot happens when I shut down and am not plugged in to a charger at all....
My galaxy S has been doing this too lately (loses all charge when off overnight). It always buzzes on shutdown.
One thing that mine has is a problem with the usb port, it slowly stopped working and now I can't charge it anymore through the port. I'm wondering if there is a physical short there that is causing the battery to drain. Possibly you have something similar going on, or a short elsewhere in the system.
I've noticed that you cannot shut the phone down when charging from certain chargers too, especially in the car. Very annoying.

Honestly, the severity of battery drain you're describing sounds lije more of a hardware issue than anything else. I would contact yoir carrier as mentioned above. Beyond that, trying out a custom ics like sky or embryo might be your best bet if you prefer the tw interface. Im on embryo 5.1 right now and am experiencing better battery health and longevity than ever before with the skyrocket. But the issue does sound like a bad battery.

This happened to me on one of my i777s.
The phone would even not boot up. It will just vibrate. Turns out the battery was bad. Changed the battery. It was still the same.
Then tried another charger, same thing happened.
So then I changed the whole charging port part in the phone.
Voila! Phone worked like a charm.
So if you have warranty change the phone. If not change the charging port. At least in my case.
I came to a conclusion that even the battery went bad because of the bad charging. Might be a coincidence too.

I have 3 S2 phones that I bought as defect and played around with. Two I could fix but I could not resolve the battery issue on the third phone like by buying a brandnew USB charger part (and trying the ones from the other 2 phones. It has nothing to do with the ROM or anything software either. I narrowed it down to be an issue on the actual mainboard. The weird thing is that the battery discharges way faster when the phone is turned off than when it's in use.
I have a regular samsung battery and an extended battery for my infuse. Throughout the day i will be using the phone and it will shut down and then flash the ibfuse charging wheel and then show an empty white battery with no charge.
I have found other posts online that say to pull the battery and when you put it back in to immediately plug in a charger and it boots up. This works for me every time however it is very annoying when it does this five to ten times a day. And it happens with either battery. Both batteries do this when fully charged.
I am getting a new phone soon and blowing this one up with a stick of explosives. But any known fix would be appreciated until then.

Have you tried wiping the Batteries' stats? I have no clue if that will help since they do it when fully charged, but who knows... It may help/work.
I have a similar problem, though the phone doesn't seem to shut down much anymore. wiping battery stats did not help. It's slowly gotten better, but far from perfect.
When the phone is on I can charge it and the phone will recognize that it is charging... but if i unplug it and plug it back in it doesn't seem to recognize that it's being charged. It's been the same on several different ROMs.
If I shut down my phone it will absolutely not start without pulling the battery and plugging in the charger.
My contract is up in May or June... As much as I enjoy all the work that's been done for this phone my particular phone seems to be getting a little long in the tooth.
I have a locked & unrooted WW TF700 & genuine dock on JB 4.2.1.
A week ago I started to notice an issue where the tab would constantly drain whilst it should have been asleep. Overnight it would loose ~30% instead of ~2%. I tried a few settings, but couldn't seem to solve it. I decided to do a factory reset because I haven't done one since I last upgraded to jelly bean. That appears to have cured that problem, but has created two more.
The first problem is that I can't seem to charge the tab over 81% when being charged directly. If I then plug it into a fully charged dock it will charge to 90% but no more, even with the charging cable in the dock.
The second problem is that the tab now decides to shut off at about 30% battery left. It won't shutdown as normal, just go blank and won't boot up again without being charged a little first. I have read threads about artificially overcharging the tab, but a symptom of that is the battery level will remain at 100% for hours before starting to drain normally. My tab won't charge to 100% and will start to drain immediately after removing the charging cable. Regardless I have tried to drain and recharge overnight with the tab both off and on but the tab won't charge past 76% overnight in either case. Restarting multiple times doesn't help at all.
For the first issue I started to suspect the charger may be at fault. This is because if I charge the tab directly, it will never get past 81%. However, if I then plug it into the freshly charged dock it will charge upto 90%. I understand that the dock will never charge the tab past 90%, unless it is plugged into the charger. Does it assume in my case that it isn't plugged in to a charger even when it is? I should mention I am using the original asus charger. Frustratingly I can't just use my phone charger to see if it solves the problem due to the 15v of the asus charger. I have noticed a slight hum/buzz coming from the charger but I can't be sure that it didn't do that before. I have had issues with the internal connections not be pushed together quite right before and getting no charge out of it, but 'clicking it together' a bit more firmly did the trick there.
Even with an overnight charge, plugged into the dock to get it to 90% I now get terrible battery life. Roughly 30mins per 10% juice. Previously I was getting around an hour per 10%.
Does anyone have an suggestions for me on how to eliminate the charger as a problem, or say doing another factory reset on a 'full charge'? The only other thing I can think of is to let it drain, give it enough charger to turn back on, then turn it off and leave it unplugged overnight (I saw it mentioned in another thread). I really appreciate any help you can give before I have to try the dreaded warranty route!
Try this with it undocked. Let the battery discharge to zero, and leave it 24 hours.
Then recharge it fully. This seems to cure the battery calibration memory issues.most us know how you get on.
Luckily I have located an Asus charger to borrow and hopefully find out if it is just my charger or not.
I also tried out CPU-Z and the battery is reporting as only having 7mV. I'm sure that can't be correct as my HOX+ is around 3500mV, and 7mV just couldn't power anything. I don't know if this is just CPU-Z issue with reporting correctly, or a clue that there is something not right with my battery? Has anyone else tried CPU-Z or know what the mV should be roughly, fully charged say?
Unfortunately a different charger didn't solve my issue :'(
I've posted a screenshot to show what is happening. I'll try draining the battery flat and leaving 24 hours to see what happens then. Luckily I still have two months left on warranty.
Pretty annoying because everything else the tablet does is fantastic. I replaced my laptop with it and use it daily for everything.

Unfortunately things have become worse. I tried using the tab until it died (at around 50% battery this time...) and left for 24 hours as suggested. Unfortunately now I can't get the tab to turn on or take a charge at all. I have tried holding power button down, with vol up/down, for over a minute etc. Tried the reset button all numerous times with no luck. All I get is the LED blink twice when pressing the power button and this only happens when the charger is connected, otherwise nothing.
I have the phone number for Asus support and will be giving them a call tomorrow. I'm so glad I never unlocked my device!

Leave it for 24 hours not on charge first then try again. We've seen this happen so many times - the fix is to let it discharge completely.

Thanks Sbdags, I appreciate your response. I've read numerous threads tonight with similar issues. I did try leaving the tab for 24 hours completely dead overnight last night. I'll try it again (I don't know if the battery is dead or not currently) but I'll leave it unplugged as there is nothing else for me to do with it anyway!
OK, I thought I would complete this thread.
After leaving my tablet for a few more days not on charge I could seem to get no life out of it whatsoever so went down the RMA route and the result of that is in the following thread;

Lately my two year old tf700t won't stay on for more than 10 mins at a time. I have the dock and both parts say more than 100% charged.
Due to my device being out of warranty and thinking something was wrong with my stock asus rom. I downgraded the rom, rooted it, unlocked and tried several different roms.
My tablet is still turning off even though it says it is 100% charged.
Is my problem a bad battery? I think it has discharged "fully" (to where it warns me) maybe 10 times in the two years i've had it in the dock. It has almost always been plugged in or lightly used around the house. It has never been drained and recharged repeatedly to the point that I would have thought it to be worn out by now.
When I've had batteries go previously, they just drain fast from 100% to 0%. Both batteries are at 100% and it won't stay on but maybe 10 minutes unplugged. When I plug it in, it takes about 5-10 mins before it turns back on again. Meanwhile, the led by the power button blinks orange like the battery is dead. When it turns back on, it tells me I'm fully charged. grr

It sounds like that you have a calibrations issue with your device. When your device is shut off by itself, you should leave it unplug about a day. Then recharge your device after a day of depletion and hope that it will solve your problem, good luck...:fingers-crossed:
Mhhhh - "almost always plugged in"?
Not the best use for these batteries. 2 years of that could have killed it.... And then - may not have anything to do with it if the battery went bad. 2 years is not an unreasonable life expectancy for a battery for a portable device.
In addition to LMK's suggestion, you could try this:
Let it die and then sit for a day unplugged.
Connect it via USB to your PC and let it trickle charge for 8+ hours (charging indicator will not even come on). Make sure your PC doesn't shut down or go into sleep mode during that time.
It should be charged enough to boot it. Check if it made a difference.
