[GUIDE] How to change Status Bar Icons [Easy way 4 noobs] - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Themes and Apps

Hi guys, after getting so many requests on my Sweet ROM thread for this icons or that icons I thought I would show you the easiest way so that you can change your own.
Please note this guide is based on Windows operating system
You will need:
A computer with Windows
7zip (free program available HERE)
systemUI.apk from your current rom
systemUI.apk from rom (or mod) with icons you want
some brains
1. Extract systemUI.apk that you are using in your rom and place it where you want it on your pc.
Right click on the systemUI.apk and select 7zip/Open archive. This open up the apk and you can now see the folders inside.
You now need to open res folder, locate drawable-xhdpi folder and drag this out to your pc.
Once it has copied over open the new drawable-xhdpi folder on your pc and here you will find a heap of png images.
Download this file and extract the folder from it. Here you will find all the Status Bar Icon images. So looking through them you will recognise battery, wifi, bluetooth etc images that show on your status bar. these are the images you need to change for different themes, eg S4 white icons etc.
2. Now open the systemUI.apk with the images you wish to add and copy out the drawable-xhdpi folder.
Now in this folder locate & copy the images you want over to the drawable-xhdpi folder you created in Step 1.
3. Once you have copied all the new images you need to re-open the archive of your rom systemUI.apk from Step 1. with 7zip.
Now open res folder and delete the drawable-xhdpi folder from in the archive.
4. Drag your new drawable-xhdpi folder (with your new images inside) into the 7zip archive.
Once this has been copied over to you 7zip archive use the green arrow (under the Add button) to go back up a level until you are at systemUI.apk. Now with it highlighted use the "Test" button to make sure it is ok.
Now we can close 7zip and you should have your systemUI with new status bar icons.
5. Make a backup of your rom (just in case) and push your new systemUI.apk back to your phone either manually with Root Explorer (or similar file manager) and set permissions rw--r--r-- or flash it from cwm.
For a flashable zip please see majdinj's flashable zip how to HERE
I hope this quick guide can help some of you learn to make your own simple icon mods.
Some examples of different Status Bar themes you can make this way

You mean like center clock etc? That takes xml or smali edits which require more knowledge and to decompile the apk. There are other threads on xda that will help you with that

[Q] Green Gingerbread icons

I have successfully used the UOT Kitchen to modify the icons and fonts, etc. but I now want to add the "green if connected to Google" icons which I didn't see in the kitchen.
Can someone explain how this can be done? Can I just modify the framework-res.apk or is this another kind of tweak or fix??
Thanks
PS: I can't see any themes around anymore that offer this (I am on WB v5 + DL custom kernel at the moment)
If you are on stock rom you can use Achotjan flashable zip in android development section (i can't post here the link cause i'm on mobile but you can easily find it watching on achotjan threads on his profile)..otherwise if you are on a different rom..you can copy and replace icon.png images from achotjan framework to your! good luck

Thanks, I don't want a new ROM - just the green icons. I currently have green icons but not the ones that only go green when you are connected to Google services.
I am looking for JUST that part only.

Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I would like to be able to do it myself as I already have a customised framework and systemUI.apk.
If someone could explain the process that would be great.
you just need to replace the correct icons in the framework-res.apk and systemui.apk then replace them on your phone.
The way i did it was copy .apk file to computer, change extension to .rar, open it in winrar (not extract), extract the hdpi-drawable folder then replace icons, copy that hdpi-drawable folder with the new icons back into winrar and it will ask you to repack the .rar, after that change the extension back to .apk and copy it to the correct folder. The framework-res.apk one is ok to copy back but if you do the systemui.apk one you will get endless fc until you can restart your phone so i think you have to install it through flashtool?
I think that you have to replace the images without extract the entire apk otherwise you need to resign it when you finish! Anyway..framework is not involved..wifi and signal icons are sustemUI related only..i will upload it in few hours..then you can watch inside for the green icons and do it yourself! Pay attention..cause if you do something wrong probably the phone won't boot up or gives fc!
Cheers

Thanks for the file. I am able to change the icons using the kitchen, but I need to understand how just replacing the icons gets them to change colour when connected to Google?? Is the code already there and the icons are all the same colour so we just don't see it with the stock icons?
I have made other changes to my SystemUI so I don't want to lose those changes - that's why I want to be able to change my own files.
Is it really just a case of changing the icons to get the desired effect? Is it some specific icons that are needed, or any icons? *still confused*

Mate..open the file that i post..inside you can find systemUI.apk..opne it with winrar and extract drawable-hdpi folder to your desktop..you will see all your icons..the images named "....fully.png" are colored green!! You must replace your current icon in your custom SystemUi with this ones!! Is it more clear now?

do you mean how the data icon and the signal bars change from green to white/grey?? cause if so then yes just changing the .pngs will be fine cause i did it with my own systemui/framework.

[Q] Need help on notification toggles

Hello everyone. Does anyone know how to customize toggles in notification menu for stock froyo rom? I would like to tweak it myself rather than installing custom roms because my gps only functional well on the stock rom. You have to adb pull system/app on your pc ....then open app folder and scroll to systemUI.apk ...you need apktool to do this....use apktool to decompile systemUI.apk ....then go to decomiled apk and open Res/drawable-hdpi ....scroll til you see the quickpanel.pngs ....there will be several of them...you can just replace them with new ones or use gimp editor to customize...

[Theme] Battery Icons (UBKPD and maybe more)

Hello everybody, i got sick of my battery icon and wanted a change, but i am with UBKPD (2.3.6. for Argentina and some other countries of Latinamerica) and couldn't use any other theme or part of it.
Thanks to the thread of umarian and other threads all over XDA and HTC Manía (this in spanish) i figure out how to change my battery icon.
I attach diferent .rar files. In there you will find a folder with icons AND the file: framework-res.apk of UBKPD according to the respective icon.
Of course, you can change icons of your Firmware whatever it is (using this icons or those you want) following the steps of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431048
The icons i've used are those provided by umarian in that thread, some others that i picked up from other threads with mods for other firmwares. None are creations of mine. SO, IF YOU LIKE THIS, THANKS HIM FOR CIRCLE BATTERY ICONS.
If you have UBKPD firmware or you want to trie if it's usefull in yours, follow this steps (you would need to be root and to have a file manager with root permissions):
a.) make a backup, just in case. We are going to touch system files!!
b.) copy the file framework-res.apk of the folder with icons you want;
c.) copy it to the folder: system in your phone, there, change permissions to rw-, r--, r--;
d) move the file framework-res.apk from system to system/framework
d) reboot and it's done.
Advice: However you got all the icons to go 1% to 1%, i still couldn't make the changes to apply the icon to work from 1% to 1%.
Please, also, if anyone have a claim on the battery icon, let me know.
Since most users are on custom themes, ICS to be precise, replacing framework-res will result in loss of the theme.
So if you can share the png files then it will be great since it only involves drag n drop using 7zip.
Or you can explain in OP to copy the png from any of your attachment and replacing them in the one's current framework-res

Thanks. My explanation seems it isn't good. Inside the folder I uploaded are the png files plus the framework file. If someone wants to use the png files there are they, separate from the framework file.
On the other hand, in the link I let is the explanation on how can port the png files (icons) to the firmware they want. However, I don't know if this procedure works with ice cream sandwich. It works 100% in ginger .

Softkey icons

I know that the softkeys can be changed to display words instead of the icons. I have found some images that have them as such but can't seem to get to work when using the custom framework maker. Am I missing something or does anyone have text image files that will work.

are the imgs u have to replace them pngs? easiest way is to rightclick framework-res.apk and open with 7zip. then drang new pngs over ones in assests folder.
then try and drag that new eddited apk into framework maker. to make a package to flash.
not sure if tb101s themer has to be editted for ec09 but ive been having trouble with 5.5 and ec09

won't that create a 7zip file? that was the only problem i had with the themer, everything worked to remove the ticker history and weather. no fc's..yet.
Well the softkeys have to be alighned. Open existing PNGs in paint or whatever and alighn new ones and save. Then run themer.

thank you, checked the sizeds and they were different. now stuck at the decomling stage in themer.

Look for older soft keys posts in our theme section.
There are easier ways in there. No decompile needed for softkey.

FOR USERS EDITING IN MOBILE (Root Explorer)..........PC users go down
Now rename the follwing files (Both from your device and the other rom) [dont mix them up. place them in different folder] as

FOR PC USERS
JUST Select the apk and right click and select winzip or any other tool and press extract
From now on use have to use your brain, gut feel, your choices and stuff.
SO Extract the zips
Got to Res folders of each apk
For Example if you are working on Settings go to
Res folder in both your rom and the cm11
in your rom go to the the file which is related to your screen resolution
Eg.
For HDPI -(drawable-hdpi)
and same with cm11 and then start comparing the pictures the both folders and there might be nice pics in (drawble-XXHDPI) folder and that doesnt mean you can take all the pics from drawable-XXHDPI after choosing your stuff replace your images and rename if necessary ( if the images look exactly the same and with different name and rename to the name of picture in your name and replace the pic ) just go into the main folder of the file of your app which you extracted and zip of your rom
For Eg. Its Setting app
after you have edited the pics
Some Other Tips
There are few pictures in blue try to edit theme with gimp or Image Editor By Byte Experts
For chaning Default Wallpaper
Go to framework-res.apk
in that go to res
then drawable
and choose the Image you want and replace the image with same name
9 pngs can be replaced in the same way, but if you want to edit them follow this video- How to easily edit .9.png files
go back to res and then back again you will find all the folders like
assets
META-INF
res
resources.arsc
AndroidManifiest.xml
Select all the files present and zip them then Rename the zip again to " Setting.apk "
now you need to push the file back to your device
Just follow this Thread - How Install a App as System APP

Great guide. Just one point/tip if I may, I see it a lot that People suggest to rename an apk to zip, well in order to open a zip you obviously need to have a program capable of doing so, so just set apks to open with your preferred zip program which will cut out the unnecessary step of having to rename each apk you want to mod.

Hey have a look at my first post and for clock you can modify jbclock+ to make it look like kk and best launcher according to me is holo kk launcher and if your running ICS+ there are many apps that looks exactly like kk launcher which version of android are you running on?? And I really think if you change many of the images in the talks it will drastically change things please have patience to read the first post
And yeah it looks like I din't work too much for this thread

yes just put a headline systemui.apk
and make a guide how to make it look like kitkat i can help you to gather all the guide for GB
similarly for framework
and one more thing you must add some screenshot that is necessary
thus people can find all guide from one thread as well some ideas from you too
Thank You

@kaushikb.1996, I saw your thread of Micromax A87, in that you've themed the dialer too, right? If I attach my Phone.apk and Contacts.apk? Can you do it for me? As far I've read the OP, there's nothing bout' that. Maybe you can help?
Thank You.

No I actually din't theme it, I used exdailer and dark theme its a light and good looking too
Great thread. Helped me a lot since I'm working on a Android L themed ROM for the galaxy express using Pacrom as base. I've managed to get the settings.apk theme changed like the header and color and stuff. Trying to change the icon colors in settings and theme the dialer and framework res. Whenever I theme the dialer and framework res it the dialer doesn't show up after replacing via system/priv-app permissions -rw-r-r-. And the framework res cause a boot loop. All I did was change some pngs and .9 images and edited the XML's dimensions and styles XML to match up then made any necessary changes to the drawables due to kitkats new theming process. Shoot me a PM thanks In advance.

Well it lots like you have normally edited .9.pngs like any other picture so there is a force close as framework runs throughout the system there is probably a boot loop for now take the apks from youe rom and flash them from recovery and after that while editing .9.pngs you first decompile the apk
Then select the picture leaving that black dots and the border and save and recompile.
I have attached the video in first post
