[Q] Port Android OS Image to TF00T - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am wondering whether it's possible to take an image of a current Android tablet and port it to the TF300t. My current employer received 5 new tablets customized by our ERP software company to only run their specific application when the tablet boots up. The user however, still has access to the Settings menu (which is also customized to only show options relevant to the software application and basic Android functionality - WiFi, etc).
Is it possible for me to somehow back up and compile the Android image from our software ERP's company and port it to our other 10 TF300ts?
I want to make sure network security (and user restrictions) is maintained even when employees use the TF300Ts - which by default seem to be loaded with lots of bloatware.
Any help is much appreciated.

It might be possible to freeze the apps and transfer them over, but id assume with that kind of software they have to log into a licence server, and proberly check for unique ids.
you would also need root access to those tablets which might be just as difficult.

[Q] Looking for an "app protector" app

Hey mates.
Im looking for a wm 7 alternative to the quite nice app protector android app called Smart App Protector.
What i need is the functionality to restrict my wm7 devices so the users cant enter IE, Settings and other functions than those i want them to.
When a user tries to open the browser on a android device with the smart app protector installed, they get prompted for a password, which is exactly what im looking for.
If there isnt an app that does what im looking for, does anyone know a way to restrict at least internet trafic in IE, i still need data connections, but the users wont be allowed to use data except for 1 app.
My first impression of the wm7 - 7.5 is that its very restricted compared to Android devices :S
Thanks a lot for your help.
A quick for-the-record: No such thing as WM7. Windows Mobile is dead. Although some of the underlying code got re-used in WP7, the upper part of the Windows Phone stack is completely new, and the low-level stuff has changed considerably as well. What you're asking for would probably have been quite easy on WinMo.
On WP7, it's a lot harder. There are three ways I can think of. The first and simplest would be a well-modified custom ROM. Another is to modify the policy system to prevent launching iexplore, settings3, and similar programs, but have an app that (once the password is provided) allows changing those policies. Note that we don't yet have full control over the policy system (as a community; Heathcliff74 knows quite a bit but is busy with his Root Tools project). The third would be to try modifying the registry entries for certain operations. The effectiveness of this depends on whether apps are launched directly (by executable) or indirectly (by GUIDs in the registry). If it's the latter, the launch request could be routed through an authorization app first.
Bear in mind, the only one of these changes that is permanent is a custom ROM. Otherwise, the user could hard-reset the phone (losing all data on it but bringing it back to factory default configuration). It's possible to hard-reset just using the buttons; you don't even need to use the touchscreen.
Thanks for the correction, WP7 ofc
Im rather impressed by the performance of the OS so far, but it has many unforseen restrictions for my needs.
Since i only had the windows phone 7 for 1 day so far, i dont have much knowledge about changing what you are suggesting.
I know what you mean, but no idea how to do on WP7.
A custom ROM would be great indeed, but i dont have any experience in that field. Would be great to get a nice configuration tool with a gui to make the needed changes and then a tool to upload the new ROM to the phone...in that simple order
Im also looking for a solution to install software that was supported by windows mobile. Im checking out cheronwp7 at the moment to see if that can do the trick.
It seems a lot like WP7 is 99% consumer minded than business minded compared to old WM, a bit shame imo.

Android as an OS for non-phone devices

Hello,
First off, apologies if I have posted this in the incorrect forum.
The company I work for is looking to update one of it's product lines and has been toying with the idea of using Android as a development platform. Up until now the philosophy has always been to develop simple, bespoke embedded software that provides only the functionality that is needed at the time. The device itself will be a medical device, and as such will have no telephony requirements (and associated things like contacts, calander and the large majority of the pre-installed Android apps).
I have read, and understand it is possible to re-compile Android from source and remove all of these non-required functionality. My question is really if that is worth doing? i.e. stripping out all un-needed applications that get build into a stock ROM. Or would it be a more efficient to use some form of OTS embedded Linux platform?
Something in Android 4.0 that does seem to be useful is the support for Bluetooth HDP.
Kind Regards,
Simon
Well there are other devices that aren't phones that use Android. Take the motoactv for example. It's a fitness watch that runs a stripped version of Android, but it's still Android and applications can still be programmed and installed to it.

[Q] Large Android TV set top box deployment

Hello All,
I originally posted this question in the Android general forum but I didn't get any traction so I'm posting here in the hopes of finding some folks in the community with ideas for this project. I work for a not-for-profit children's hospital. The idea is to create a patient entertainment system (think the LodgeNET style systems in hotel rooms) using less expensive and more open hardware/software. We've purchased a few Android based set top boxes such as the EnjoyTV (I'd post the link but it won't let me) and have managed to get them configured the way we want.
The situation we're struggling with now is managing 200+ of these boxes out in the field. I have a few ideas but no one here really with the Android experience to bounce them off of.
Some thoughts:
- We would like to be able to completely reset the device to 'factory' defaults when patients leave rather than worry about locking down the devices too much.
- We would need the defaults to be our configuration, specific applications installed and perhaps even some hospital branding involved.
- I know I can reconfigure the ADB daemon on the device to listen on the ethernet port as opposed to USB.
- In doing so there is no security but I can handle security in the network layer using ACLs etc.
- I should then be able to use remote ADB commands to reset the device which I can script but what will get reset? Will my cusotmizations/apps go away? Will I have to compile a custom ROM?
- Is there a better direction to go in entirely?
Any help or even just a jab in the right directly would be GREATLY appreciated, both by myself and the kids who will benefit while they're here.
Hi,
I think you need MDM solution.
Ideally you might want to get Device admin rights and then reset it from remote easily.

[Q] Dream software config for Android Tablet ROM developers ?

Hello World ! I have identified a need for a smaller tablet and have begun the process to request information about how to have the hardware designed and manufactured. But as we all know, hardware is only half of the equation - the other half is the software. So I have a question for you:
What would the ideal software configuration for an Android-based LTE-enabled TABLET (with SIM card), suitable for ROM developers ?
I have (a little) previous experience (as an end-user) with replacing the manufacturer/carrier ROM for my HTC Desire with the CyanogenMod ROM. That, coupled with my years of experience as a developer (pre-Internet) allow me to at least be aware that there are layers of software from bootup, to device drivers, to OS, etc.
I would like this community to help define (or point me at some documentation) what those specific layers are, which package(s) should be used at each level, up to the point of being able to get into the Google Play Store.
I am not interested in which apps should be discussed - that's the end-user's problem.
Thanks,
Steven.

Android 11 popup on unattended device

Hello,
I have a huge problem that is making me leave android.
Since android 4 I have been developing software for devices that are stuck to a wall and spread-ed across the country, mainly price-checking and digital signage software.
The end user (the client from the retailer) cannot access menus and anything else other then what running software offers. With android 4 I was able to make updates to software remotely, and monitor control all the device, with vnc and ssh.
Recent android versions are picky and for example i cant have vnc , neither an ssh that allows me to control the system, unfortunately whit this i can live. but for example if i need to update my app with another apk which require more permissions it will show a popup asking for permissions, that is not OK on a remote device where no one from the company is using it. I cannot hope a client clicks yes on the popup for my app to run again.
Android 4 and 5 where perfect, android 10 and 11 are terrible for this. How can i bypass this, is it possible?
Thanks and sorry for the English.
