[SCRIPT][S-OFF] Flashing boot.img (kernel) from recovery - HTC One S

Now that S-OFF is coming for the VilleC2, here's a simple way to flash a new kernel from recovery without the need of fastboot. Developers can just integrate it into their ROMs to make flashing easier.
Just replace the boot.img inside the .zip with the boot.img you want to flash using WinRAR/7zip etc.
If you need any libs installed, just create a /system directory and put what you need inside it.
Note that this will only work on S-OFF VC2 devices (unless your device uses the same boot block).

Hang on I'll take a look at it, might've made a mistake repacking it outside of a ROM

Probably, since I have managed to flash twrp backup without using fastboot (from sense to cm)

[Q] Is flashing a kernel as easy as going to recovery and installing it?

Hi i'm new to the att htc one x, just rooted, and installed twrp... then flash cleanrom5. I also noticed clean has a kernel, i did not see an install guide, but i've installed kernels before on my captivate. So what i'm wondering if it's as easy as....
1. place kernel on phone storage
2. reboot into recovery
3. install kernel from recovery
4. reboot
If there anything i am missing or if i am completely off could someone please help me out with this?
Thank you :good:
If you are on the 1.14 hboot (rooted on 2.20 firmware) you can't flash kernels from recovery. You have to do it using fastboot.

Would you mind walking me through that process?
Unless this makes any difference "CleanROM V is based on the latest Asian 2.29 RUU which is Android 4.0.4, Sense 4.1 and is ODEXED!"
not sure if that means i am on 2.29 rooted.

Not the firmware you are on now. The firmware you originally achieved root on. More importantly, what version is your hboot (go to hboot, and the version number is listed)?
If your phone was purchased with 2.20 firmware, and you rooted using the new X-factor exploit method, you have the 1.14 hboot.
Hboot 1.14 plugged the hole by which flashing kernels from recovery was possible. So it can only be done by fastboot.

I already flashed the rom, just not the kernel, i don't remember flashing the boot.img, just following the instructions on the rom's page here

That's how i flashed this rom anyway.

Well, If cleanROM is using the same Kernel as stock, then you got lucky. If they use the same kernel, no need to flash boot.img.
If they are different kernels and you dont flash boot.img, you are now in a bootloop

Sorry for so many questions lol, just making sure i do this right.
okay so basically i want to download the kernel and the fastboot drivers posted in your post.
Extract the fastboot drivers, and then unzip the kernel, taking the boot.img from it and placing it into the fastboot directory that i just unzipped.
I then want to boot my phone into hboot and select fastboot
open the command prompt and take it to where the fastboot.exe is.
then type fastboot flash boot boot.img into the command prompt
After all this is done i want to go into recovery and flash the zip of the kernel?
Is that all right?

Because the new hboot makes it to where you cant flash kernels through recovery. only fasboot
So why the second flash if the boot.img was flashed via fastboot?

So although ROM zip file contains boot.img when flashing boot.img won't be flashed? That's why we need to flash is separately? Is it important to flash it before flashing ROM?
Thank you.R
I'm also, learning as I go. From reading and multiple failed attempts at flashing ROMs and kernels, I have found the correct way with 1.14 Hboot.
-dl the rom/kernel
-extract only the boot.img file
- save both .zip and boot to your desired folder.
-go into recovery and mount sd card to pc
-transfer .zip file to your phones sd card
-get back into fastboot on your phone
-transfer boot.img to fastboot folder
-from fastboot cmd prompt(if you have win7, open your folder with fastboot in it hold shift+right click and open cmd)
-type "fastboot boot boot.img" without quotes
-go back into recovery and clean cache/delvik
-then install .zip that you copied to the sd card
You should be good to go from there.
If I have left anything out, please feel free to correct.

You need a sense kernel for sense roms, and cm/aosp/aokp kernels for those roms.
Stock no-wp sense kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2150219
Check About>Software information>More and it will tell you what kernel you're on.
If you flash a ROM, it will flash a kernel with the ROM. You can find that kernel in the ROM zip file (boot.IMG). Extract that file and flash it using fastboot to return to the kernel that was packaged with your ROM.

If hboot is <1.14 (or you are S-off), the kernel will just flash as the ROM. You can just dirty flash the ROM again.
If hboot is 1.14 or greater (and S-on), just extract boot.img and flash in fastboot as mentioned above. Kernel is part of boot.img.

As I already said, the kernel is a part of boot.img.
There are other things in boot.img besides just the kernel:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Unpack%2C_Edit%2C_and_Re-Pack_Boot_Images#Structure_of_boot_and_recovery_images
Although the terms boot.img and kernel are used nearly synonymously here. When "kernels" are posted, I think its always the entire boot.img package.
And in regards to your original question, it doesn't really matter.
To return to the stock kernel, just flash the stock boot.img.

Wait, no. I was misunderstanding you. The kernel has to be a flashable zip to be able to install from recovery. Otherwise, I think you are right, if you just have the boot.img, you need to install with fastboot.
I've noticed that some kernel only works with sense roms (ElementalX).
Say for example, i want to flash another rom without sense ui.
Do i need to reflash stock kernel first? Or flash the boot.img (kernel?) inside the new rom zip file?
Also the stock kernel from the link has two files. One is "installer" and the other is boot.img. I need to install the installer file thur Recovery, correct? And also flash the boot.img to go back to stock?
Thanks i'm such a n00b.

Sense requires a Sense kernel.
AOSP based ROMs require an AOSP kernel.
In general, you should install the kernel for the ROM that you are flashing. Some kernels may work over more than one ROM (do the research before you try it), but never a Sense kernel for an AOSP ROM, or vice versa.

One or the other, you don't need both. If you are hboot 1.14 or higher, I don't know if the installer way will work. The boot.img way (in fastboot) will work, no matter what hboot you are on.

[HOW-TO]Flash boot.img in recovery

Pretty often I stumble upon guys having issues to flash boot.img via fastboot, especially for noobs on the block. Also when flashing new Kernels it`s handy, if you always have your current boot.img as flashable on your device in case something is going wrong or you simply don`t like the new Kernel.
So here is the very short how-to:
1. Download the BootUpdate_by_hestheone64.zip
2. Open the zip with winrar or 7zip and drag the boot.img in the zip (just below Meta-Inf)
3. Copy the zip to your SD and flash convenient in Recovery

Works only on qualcomm devices
Can`t say for sure, but you definitley need to adjust mmcblk0p for boot.img in updater script first. otherwise you might flash boot in data block or wherever
On One it sits in mmcblk0p33
So just type:
adb shell
su
cat /proc/emmc
and you should see the correct block.
What is the purpose of flashing boot.img?
going to basic, what is boot.img by the way?
Thanks.
It's the kernel partition if I'm not wrong.
Flash boot.img let you change the kernel.

rom zip flashes the whole rom (together with boot) whereas this one is just for the boot.img. It's useful when you are trying out custom kernels (like bubba for the One S) and want to revert. If you want, you technically could just dirty flash your current rom to get the original boot back
So that will work with S-On on our phone as well? HTC Desire X is qualcomn based as much as I know...

Nope. You can't flash a boot.img with s-on devices. It needs to be done through fastboot.
If you want, maybe try getting s-off? It's really easy with rumrunner.us

According to your bootloader details you are at a good starting point. Here is what I recommend you do from here:
1. Download a custom recovery like TWRP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558503
2. flash this in bootloader mode. If you don't know how here is the help thread you need to read through:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593382
3. Once you have a custom recovery installed, you can flash SuperSu or other root app (google is your friend.)
4. Stick with the rooted rom you have or flash another of your choosing.

Why are you using a toolkit to flash recovery???
Just download from http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/evita
or download the unofficial TWRP from the original android dev section if you plan on flashing an AOSP or CM based Rom and then fastboot flash recovery recovery_filename.img
Easy peasy. Too many links is an error that should have nothing to do with flashing recovery...

Yeah, you need the bootloader, radio, vendor images. It's probably easier to just flash 6.0.1 from here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#bullhead

So just to clarify, its not even possible to update a phone's bootloader, radio, and vendor.img via TWRP right? Must be done via fastboot?

Do I need to flash any new radio or anything with this if coming from 6.0?

no need. radio and bootloader are same as 6.0.

Vender can be packed into a flashable zip on our nexus. I'm not sure about the radio and bootloader on our nexus phone. Htc if s-off can flash radios I'm sure of and lg g2, g3, etc can flash loki bootloaders from a custom recovery. But you have got to be careful when your writing data to these very sensitive partitions because 1 screw up and you have a hard brick

We can use fastboot to flash radio, bootloader, and vendor.
So this is basically a flashable zip for people(me) who are unwilling to go back to stock 6.0.0 from whatever ROM there are on and apply OTA updates?
Right now, I'm unlocked and rooted, stock with ElementalX kernel(6.0.0) flashed, can I just flash this, then reroot?
This zip includes 6.0.1 kernel right?
Thanks in advanced, I'm new to the Nexus phones

I believe you still need to fastboot flash the radio and bootloader. The vendor.img there is a TWRP flashable zip in the pure nexus project thread

Alright, so I have to flash this zip file, reboot to fastboot, flash radio and boot loader and I'm done? And I can proceed on to root the whole thing again and stuff? Is that right?

If you aren't on the latest radios/bootloader, just do a full wipe in TWRP, then reboot to bootloader and fastboot flash radios, bootloader, and vendor.img. Then reboot to TWRP and flash the ROM.zip
There is also a TWRP flashable vendor.img courtesy of Beanstown106

You can either flash the vendor.img in fastboot or flash it in TWRP with the flashable version
This ROM is good with Layers, right?

Stock flashable zip? I know there are custom ROMs. I am looking for one just like OP on this thread but for the slight version bump.
