missing menus buttons - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I recently installed CM10 and I have noticed that some of the menu buttons in apps like gmail and the play store are missing. I read that phones like the GS3 have physical buttons which are used instead of the usual onscreen triple dot button but I don't think my one x has a hardware menu button. here is a censored image of what my gmail app looks like:

The top left, those three lines there, tap that.
Also within cm under hardware keys in system settings, you can map the recent apps key to be a menu button. Then longpress to bring up recent apps.

Recent app hot key

II just found out if you hold the home button down a recent app menu will pop up

Yeah, it's a standard shortcut on all android phones. That's why I'm particularly annoyed that HTC wasted so much space in my notifications menu with recent apps. I can't see my notifications without scrolling because they decided to put something in there that I can see any time by holding the home button >.<

3-Dot Menu Bar...HTC thing, or any app that doesn't have an overflow menu?

So, as we're all aware, the One X has no menu key, and instead has a multitasking key, and programs now either utilize an overflow menu in the top-right, a la Play Store, or a large bar taking up the bottom of the screen. What I'm wondering is if the bar is an HTC creation, as some people seem to believe, or if Android itself puts it there for phones without a menu button that are running apps that don't have an overflow menu.
RIght now I'm seeing plenty of mods (or maybe just one mod in several places) that remap the multitasking key into a menu button, and remove the bar. But then I'm left with a button whose function doesn't match the symbol on the key and it doesn't match Google's vision for Android either. I rather like the idea of the overflow menu and what I'd much prefer is to keep the intended functionality of the multitasking key, and instead force programs to use an overflow menu and get rid of the overflow BAR at the bottom all together. I can't seem to find a mod to this effect, and I'm not entirely sure it's even POSSIBLE...hence, this thread...
I believe it would have to be coded into the app itself, hence why some apps use the bar at the bottom of the screen. Those apps haven't been coded to use the menu button at the top.

You are correct. The overflow menu in the top right must be hard coded into the app. The bar at the bottom is Android's (not HTC's) way of dealing with the lack of a menu button and lack of an implemented overflow menu.
What a godforsaken annoyance this 3dot bar is.
You have the 2nd largest screen (not counting the Note) to the S3, and a fair bit of it is wasted in a game all for that bar.
Does anybody know of a way to disable this bar without rooting? I've never done this, and since this is a transitionary device, I'd like to keep it stock for resale.
Either root or upgrade firmware to 2.2x. What's funny, is on firmware 1.44, their pre release build you can press small arrow on that 3 dot bar and make it disappear, then hold recent app button for a second to bring it up again when needed

[Q] How to hide 3 dot menu button ViperXL 3.1

So I just installed ViperXL today and I can't find any way to disable the onscreen bottom menu button for apps that don't have it built in like Facebook.
In CM10 and CleanROM there was a way to have it so I could set up my recent apps key to do multitasking on tap, and menu on long press. By default that would disable the built in 3 dot menu in apps like Gmail but in those roms you can reenable the 3 dots and still use the recent apps key as a menu key.
Is there any way to hide that on screen menu button that shows up at the bottom of the screen in Viper?
Thanks!

I found those options without a problem.
If I disable the Soft Menu Bar, it fixes the problem with apps like facebook and XDA, however in Gmail and other apps I lose the 3 button overflow from within the app itself.
In my attachment, the part circled in red is lost with the Soft menu bar disabled. When the Soft menu bar is enabled, I get back that button but also get the annoying black bar at bottom with the 3 dots in Facebook/XDA. CM10 and CleanROM both had a way to have the 3 dots from apps as well as disable the black bar while having the recent apps key do both menu and multitask.
I believe it is a build.prop change so there is no way to have it show just the in-app menu button

Yes, but there is on stock ROMs...
I changed key binding so long press on recent apps brings up menu, its in venum. Tweaks under buttons right next to cpu tab

I hate how we can't have the best of both worlds with ViperXL 3.2.1. Before, we could turn off the menu bar, have the in-app 3-dot menu, and have the long-press menu button for apps that have yet to update their UI.
Now we have to long-press the menu button for every app, and constantly guess if the app we're using has a menu or not. Some people think this is fine. I don't. I thought the whole point behind custom ROMs and Android was the ability to change things to what we want, and not being limited by decisions made by people who think they know everything.
Lol then find a rom that does what you want or make it yourself

Where is Action overflow\MENU button Carbon ROM

I just flashed my One X to Carbon ROM, like it alot so far but having an issue, in some apps the action overflow button pops up on the screen (the three little stacked dots) but on others it does not and i have no way to get to the settings. i.e. i have autoguide app. you need the menu or action over flow button (which ever you chose to call it) to open a search to search specific forums and threads, ALSO i have photobucket app, you need the button so that you can select different albums. is this a rom issue or am i missing a settings button somewhere?
You need to remap the recent apps button to be the menu button, go to Settings/Carbon Fiber/Interface/Buttons. I think that's the right location anyway.

Thanks I found this option shortly after posting, any idea why some apps pop up with the 3 buttons and some don't?

It depends on the coding per app. Some apps have the overflow button even when there's a physical menu button, but on other apps it disappears when it detects a physical menu button.

[Q] Forcing In-app menu button

Hi, i have a question about menu button (three dots) in apps.
Is there a way to force it to show up while using hardware buttons?
I know that it shows up when using soft keys, but I want to take advantage of that additional pixels and also not use long press action on hardware keys. I've been trying to find a way but with no luck.
no you can't because in some apps the three dots come in the nav bar
Check xposed modules I think there is one for that
