[Q] Question in creating an App - General Questions and Answers

HI,i just created this app ( you can find in the attachment )
A brief about the App: i have a website called techolicious.com which is where i upload My students agenda so they can check it weekly
and i want to make an app that will take the information from my website and display it in the app not open it in a browser just like this app that i made it using App inventor , i am now learning Android app development using eclipse , so can you just tell me how i can do it ???
Thanks

If you don't want it to use the website to retrieve the information then the app would need access to the server that is hosting your agenda, and be able to pull directly from the server.

OK , how i supposed to do that ?? My website created by wordpress and can i do it while using App inventor ?? or should i make it on the eclipse ??
Thanks for replying

Any suggestions ??

If you are using a hosting company to host your website, you wouldn't be able to do this, as you would need direct access to the server to be able to link the app and the server. Unless you had access to wordpress' servers, you're SOL unless you host the website internally.

SOL means sorry out of luck, what I tried to explain is that unless you can access the servers that are hosting your website (meaning you have physical access to the box), you wouldn't be able to pull the information other than their chosen output methods.

Dutty Website

Hi all,
I was speaking with Dutty and was going to start him a website so he could load some ROMs up for everyone's enjoyment but neither he nor I have the time to webmaster, was wondering if i could get a volunteer. I will provide all the hosting and the domain, which we still havent picked any ideas . Shouldn't be too time intensive, we arent wanting him to have his own forum or anything he will still be here for that just maybe a FAQ repost and some other minor stuff. Let me know if you are interested, PM me for more information.
Thanks again man, nice and thanks for offering
I can transfer the actual site as soon as my server is back up and running. But be sure what you offer and if your server can handle that awesome amount of connections and downloads in parallel. good luck
i can make the repository....im a php geek...should be a no brainer as long as the hosing is quality...any chance its a cpanel host? id install an open source prog...prob joomla or wordpress....then some light skinning
It will actually be meant to help him out, it is a Microsoft Hosting solution, PM me for some more details if you want to get a hand in helping. I am not sure if it will be able to handle all the trafic Mr. Dutty generates but it should help get his ROMs out.

lol well if you don't trust M$, you could always use Apple.... (maybe not)
not to stray off topic or anything
but yeah... Dutty... if you need a repository, i can build one for ya in less than 24 hours... its 1am in Hawaii, so ill hit the sack soon...
after thinking about it... something like dotProject may be better... this would include your repository AND your bug tracker / report module....wouldnt surprize me if there wasnt a mobile skin for it allready... i know that wordpress has a freebie mobile skin...
frankly, its gotta be a little disturbing for you to have to comb thru hundreds of pages of jibber jabber to find legit bugs... having a bug tracker built into the repository could simplify that for you.
ya know... theres allways the whole "hey community, why dont we chip in and buy dutty a hosting plan somewhere with the spex to host it "

Is ASP.NET enabled(if yes what version 2.0, 3.5?), and what should the site have?
Should it be a static page or a page with a control panel where someone can edit the page?

Ok guys this should help with some of the questions, it is a web site hosting package the details can be found at www.1and1.com it is the ms developer package.
why dont post them on usenet and post the nzb files on xda thatway the speed is fast and the roms dont use up ur bandwith....
or make a torrent out of it and start a xda dev torrent server...so everyone gets to share the bandwith
Try Drupal. Pretty nice CMS with lots of addons. I've used Joomla too, but its pretty heavy of an install (ie: overkill in my opinion) for what you are talking about.
Okay, site is back and running. Rom hosting is "outsourced" to another location. Thanks to frikibaby.
so have fun with testing dutty's roms.
k.
I had him on one of my servers, he was doing about 1.2TB/month in traffic. He wasn't really affecting my server, however, my other commitments required that I do some moving around, his site had to go... for now anyway.
never mind

New standard of xda-file uploading/downloading ~ READ

THIS WOULD BE A FREE SERVICE, OFFERED TO ALL XDA-MEMBERS
alright, while sitting in the xda IRC somebody complained about everyone using rapidsahre links, them dying, and the need for a new XDA posting service.
this coupled with the completely empty XDA ftp, we got to talking. Chainfire suggested using usenet for the roms/files/whatever. he said he attempted to get it more widely used years ago, but nobody really cared.
now, my thought is i setup a webUI frontend for the xda usenet group, and make it alot like the current xda-ftp stucture is. simple uploading, simple downloading. no real knowedlge of usenet needed to do it, and the files would be good for at least a year on the servers.
maybe even write a FTP frontend for the group.
what are your guy's thoughts on this. no download limits, no YOU HAVE TO WAIT 9HOURS TO DOWNLOAD ANOTHER ROM, no YOURE ALREADY DOWNLOADING A FILE LOLWAIT, no random deletions of files, uncensored content uploading(you can figure what that means), and super-fast downloading of ROMs, with a que.
we need your thoughts on this project.
edit:
usenet is a pay service, however the concept of this is to provide a free frontend for the usenet posts to the xda community. IT WILL BE FREE.
IT WILL BE FREE
I'm pdbogen, and I approve of this message.
/me is in favor and would love to help make this happen somehow.
posting in an epic thread
i believe this is a genius plan. I SHALL HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN!
I'm all for faster file transfers and less "LOL YOU BETTER WAIT BECAUSE YOU'RE A NOOB" messages.
Who would be supplying the servers? And how much would it cost to set up?
between me and turbzy, we have enough resources/servers to handle a good 3 mirrors of the setup, so we're good on the money/servers.
we just have to write the webinterface and get people to use it.
if you and the freenode crew whip up something good and badass, i will aggressively promote it on my heavily-trafficked websites
(bumping thread)
very nice idea indeed, just what xda was missing =]
This sounds awesome, I say go for it!
me and turbzy will start work on this as soon as we get a few uploaders/chefs willing to use the new system in place of rapidshare.
it's toomuch work to just write and then have wasted because nobody uses it.
the idea is, we're going to maybe write a built in FTP server. so as far as uploading is concerned to upload a file you'll
a) go to the site, and be presented with a upload form. just select the zip/rar and press upload. it'll upload to the multiple backend servers, and give you a direct link. OR possible upload it to a few other options, im thinking maybe add a rapidshare+mediafire+multiple FTP mirrors.
or b) connect to our custom FTP server and upload the file that way. after the file is completed, it will upload it to the other servers and give you the direct url. i'll make a more simplistic description later.
all in all, everyone i've talked ot about the idea thinks its genius. help us get people on board=
oh also, i'm thinking there may be a registration system needed for uploading. it's unfortunate we couldnt just sync it with the XDA login system, but it'll be needed to post verified files. it'd be better for file organization and whatnot.
then again, we may be able to sync with the XDA userdatabase if it gets big enough.

I doubt Flar and company would let you touch the user database. However, maybe they could host the front-end on their servers? For example: fileshare.xda-developers.com
That would then interact with all your middleman servers, etc etc.
So the XDA server would just be the front-end, but it would redirect the file to your servers... is this possible?
Or even better, have XDA auth the user (via login to the forums) and then have it redirect to your server with some fun authing stuff. Then you guys don't need the database, but it would still be secure.
yaaaap. that was my idea, just attempt login. much simpler and lord knows precious xda administration wouldnt dare have their hands on a project meant to..actually maintain the files produced by the community!
they won't help us. even if they offered, i think running them seperate from this site is better and safer.
bump because i actually care about the project.
just a thought and i didnt see it covered
how will the virus scanning be implemnted. will you put a system in place at you end so its get scanned after uploadthen accepted or will you be asking the uploaders to scan them.
just a note because im pretty sure the current FTP scans files and lets you know whether the threaten. but if you leave it multiple uploaders then maybe well get ton of viruses littering the database
i am unsure as to how to handle that. thats why im thinking a user database would be useful, somehow mark the legit uploads with a key of some sort. i'll think about that, but im sure we can handle that.
from what ive seen clamav is pretty easy to tack on to whatever system youre using
edit: as for user database integration, all we'd need xda to do is toss a small api on their server that lets us verify accounts and return a userid that we can associate posts with. we wouldn't need actual access to the database
all im saying is yes you can verify the user who uploads the stuff
but we can verify the stuff
there was a problem a while back with ppl adding cracked apps to the ftp and viruses aswell
i don't think we care about cracked apps. thats somewhat the point.

well I think you should. This isn't a warez site, nor should it be affiliated to anything to do with it.
It sounds more to me like you're trying to set up a new warez service based on the good name of xda-devs!

No. I have asked them already... let's wait.
By now, you must go using the browser.
You better try in your PC, choose the city and then copy the address to use in the phone. Is simple by this way. Choosing in the phone could be hard.
hi
can some one post the apk file for download please. its not on market anymore
We need a link to download this apps...
Like xtasi wrote : it's not on market anymore
In the Windguru site, go to news, and search for Windguru to Android.
There is the Author and an Email adress. You better write him asking for a download link.

[App][2.2+] Short URL Resolver

Short URL Resolver handles the short URLs typically used in social networks: t.co, goo.gl, bit.ly, etc.
Why would you need a (big) web browser to open a Youtube video. Click this link on your Android phone: Video (Then try again after installing this app to see the difference).
Sure, there are other apps that do this, but I think mine has unique features:
Doesn't get in the way: It's small (~200kb). Minimal user interface. Does exactly 1 thing and does it right.
Handles Facebook's external links. Tired of launching the browser to open a m.facebook.com?l.php URL? No more.
Handles Youtube's attribution links. These should be handled by the Youtube app (Google's fault). Short URL Resolver handles them for you, so you get to see the video on the Youtube app. No browser involved.
Handles Tapatalk api click links.
Handles Google.com/url links. They are used in the Play Store descriptions, for example.
Also, it's free, and ad-free. You can make an in-app donation if you feel it's worth it.
It doesn't use any third party service for resolving the URLs. The basic principle is making an HTTP request and determining where it's being redirected.
It's my first public Android App, but I think it's the best of its kind (you can try and prove me wrong X-D)
Download
I'm also attaching the latest version to this post, for those that can't access the Google Play Store.
Just updated to support Tapatalk links... I didn't notice those api click links Tapatalk generates until I was testing this thread
Really awesome! Certainly the best, there isn't any other app that works so ****ing good. It makes easier moving between apps and improve the workflow. Thanks a lot, keep going!
How does this compare to CrappaLinks. I know that this one doesn't require root/xposed...But my question is what benefits/advantage does this offer over CrappaLinks for people who are already rooted and have xposed??

I'm the author of CrappaLinks. If you're already using CrappaLinks: you can use it for apps that may not be supported by CrappaLinks, or use it for shortened URLs (as CrappaLinks doesn't unshorten URLs yet.) It's also useful if you come across a shortened/masked link in a document or similar.
CrappaLinks removes masking from *specific* apps that mask your links. This app can be used anywhere for unmasking *and* unshortening.
I personally use it alongside CrappaLinks, for the reasons I've mentioned above.

Gotcha. Do you plan on adding universal link unmasking to CrappaLinks in future? Or just adding support for individual apps? (Support for slickdeals app would be great). The reason why I ask this is because the url shortner service that app uses is blocked by Adblock and because of that I can't open ANY links from that app. Also same with adf(dot)ly links
Regardless I'll be using this alongside CrappaLinks that way most if not all links on my phone will be unmasked regardless of the app. Thanks @op for this.
Edit
Even after installing this app....slickdeals redirect urls don't work.
Edit 2: Here is a sample redirecting link from slickdeals app http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-122526...5267-_-Home%2520Depot%2520Product%2520Catalog

Putting it in very simple terms, the only way to unshorten these URLs is:
"Open" the URL -> See if the "destination" is different
This requires a connection to the host that is shortening the URLs. If you're blocking it (by using Adblock for example,) it's not possible to connect at all, so all unshortening apps will fail as well.
You may be able to white list whatever hosts you want in Adblock. Check their help pages and see for yourself, not sure.
About CrappaLinks requests, please ask in the CrappaLinks thread as to keep this one on topic.

Just installed slickdeals app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.slickdeals.android), but the URLs generated by the app aren't like yours... Example:
http://slickdeals.net/?sdtrk=android&api_key_id=872706&pno=112586&lno=1
You see the destination URL is not visible there (I have to contact their server to get it).... Also, there URL is too generic to add it to the manifest. I.e., I don't want to handle all links to slickdeals.net... just the ones that mask redirection links.
http://slickdeals.net/click?whatever (good, I can match the /click prefix)
http://slickdeals.ne/?whatever (bad, too generic, would catch urls that arent redirections)

Thanks for looking into this for me. I just upgraded the app to the latest version.
And it turns out...It uses 2 redirects.
First when you click on a link from the app.. It uses this http://slickdeals.net/?sdtrk=android&api_key_id=1779234&pno=112588&lno=1 just like what you mentioned above.
And then that above link redirects like this... http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-122526...20Product%2520Catalog&quantity=1&str_nbr=2659
As you can see clicking on both of the above links redirects you to the same page...But the second redirection "www.jdoqocy.com" happens really fast..so that's why its hard to see. I hope this helps.
Basically whenever I click a link from the app... the first redirection "slickdeals.net/?..." to "www.jdoqocy.com" happens automatically but the second redirection doesn't happen because of the Adblock. I tried adding "jdoqocy.com" to Whitelist on Adblock but that messes up app itself.
Looks like www.jdoqocy.com is owned by Commission Junction, so I guess its pay per click or something.
P.S. Fuerteventura looks like an awesome island. I hope to check it out someday.

The shortened urls have no relation to the actual url whatsoever, but some forums use scripts to convert all links to this format:
Examples:
http://*******/1474226/http://lukemovement.wordpress.com
http://*******/1474226/http://newsplus.co/features/
The destination url is in the Long url itself.
The asterisks are adf (dot) ly, as this these links cannot be posted on xda.
For the shortened url however, this service can be used to bypass the Ad, maybe it will be useful: de-ads.net
you can paste links on this page to go directly to the destination page....
Thanks a lot for considering this man!

That's something up to the Ebay app developers. Currently their app is registered to handle only these urls patterns, according to the AndroidManifest.xml file:
http://pages.ebay.com/android/item/view/
http://pages.ebay.com/android/item/query/
http://www.ebay.com/motors/garage/pub/vehicle/
http://www.ebay.com/mtr/garage/pub/vehicle/
Unless the URL is in that format, the ebay app won't do anything to open it.
Julian.

Feedly URLs
Hi,
Excellent app!
Just so you know: Feedly shortens URLs under some circumstances.
It gives a you URL like this:
feedly (dot) com/e/lTWp53yG (I'm new so no URLs for me!)
which redirects to some random Techdirt article.
Would it be possible to add support for those too?
Feedly also uses those shortened URLs when sharing articles. I have no idea how Android's sharing infrastructure works, but it'd be nice to be able to "share" them with your app so they could get de-crappified. (Yeah, this would add some steps to the sharing process, but I'd rather go through a few more steps than share obfuscated URLs.)

[Q] How to get offline d.android.com

Hey guys me and my friend are learning to code android app using d.android.com
My friend works offline and i have online internet connection so my question here is how to get the offline version of d.android.com?
You can try site mirroring
Site mirroring is the best option for you.
You can do it with httrack software and if offline site is already available on internet do search it especiaaly on torrent sites.
