[Resolved] [Q] Search installed applications in Google Now? - General Questions and Answers

[This doesn't seem to be a phone specific issue so I thought I'd post it here in General, hope that's ok.]
The behavior of typing something in the Google Now bar and having it return installed Apps stopped working for me a couple days ago. Anyone else?
For anyone who's not familiar with this behavior, it's a really nice feature of the main Google Now widget:
Punching in part of an app name in the Google Now bar pulls up hits including installed apps.
It's very convenient to for example turn on your phone, type in "Scan", and get as the top hit the Genius Scan app for example (you might only remember the "Scan" part of the name of the app).
Or type in "Face" and the Facebook app shows up. (Partials work.)
It's very similar to the iOS left-swipe search, the Windows 7 Start button, and OSX Spotlight.
Hunting and pecking through the app list is for chumps.

A friend noticed that if you type in "Facebook app" or "Fac app" and then press enter you DO get an app result in Google Now card style with "Open app" as a button. If this is an intended change I believe it's for the worse and is less useful than the iOS left-swipe search, the Windows 7 Start Button, and OSX spotlight (because with any of these you can just start typing and once you've gotten far enough into the word, results will start popping up -- this was how the Google Search widget used to work a couple days ago.)

After a Google+ update push this morning, no-chump app launching is now fixed.

Just noticed that I have the same issue...
No apps show in result (even with installed apps ticked )

Lookout Mobile Security

I use this at times on my HTC evo, but it looks like it's not available to download on the Xformer from the Market. Anyone know why? Anyone have the apk file for it?
edit: i was able to get it from Amazon App store
edit2: Well, i figured out why lookout wasn't available for the tf101. Our tablets without 3g doesn't have sms service, which apparently lookout utilizes for location even with gps on

There is trouble with Lookout fully functioning on Android tablets due to the fact that they don't support SMS messages. We rely on SMS messages to initiate a connection to a device in the event it's lost, stolen, etc. Without the ability to receive SMS messages the missing device features are greatly hindered, however, device based backups and malware protection should work normally.

The reason why you're having trouble finding Lookout in the market for Honeycomb Tabs is due to the fact that the they don't support SMS messages. We rely on SMS messages to initiate a connection to a device in the event it's lost, stolen, etc. Without the ability to receive SMS messages the missing device features would be greatly hindered, however, device based backups and malware protection would work normally.
Until we release a version that's more compatible with the Honeycomb tabs you can install it using this alternate method:
The first thing you'll want to do is enable the installation of non-market applications. To do this:
Go to settings > application > and check the box next to "Unknown Sources." Go ahead and disregard the warning (by clicking OK), we can uncheck it later.
Next, back out of Settings and open up the web browser.
In the address bar delete everything that's there and type this in (minus quotes): "m.getjar.com" and hit enter.
Now click on "Android" under "Or, Choose your platform." This will bring you to another page where you will see a search box in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Tap the search box, to insert the cursor, and type "Lookout" and tap "go". The search will produce one result, which is "Lookout"
Tap on the link "Lookout Mobile Security with Antivirus".
You will now be on another page that displays a grey "Download" box. Go ahead and tap on it.
The Tablet will show that it's beginning to download the file and you'll see the progress, of the download, in the notification bar.
Tap on the download icon (it looks like a downward facing arrow pointing at a line) and a small window will populate above with the word "lookout-production-signed-aligned.apk" Go ahead and tap on that.
A window that says "Package Installer" pops up. From here you can read the permissions that Lookout requires. Go ahead and tap "Install".
Your installation will start. Tap "Open" once the installation has finished to open Lookout.
Finish setting up Lookout as you normally would!

Awesome thanks. Nice to have lookout on my TF.
I think they should still deploy it for tablets either way. I don't mind not having the locate feature on my Transformer. I really only want it for their anti-virus/malware checking as well as their backup features.

App Manager in Google Play still useless, any idea?

I have searched this forum and the web, still surprised about the poor integration of multiple devices in Google Play.
Can anybody tell me if there is any easy and fast way to transfer most of your app's to a new device?
I am amazed the lack of usability in this matter? Why is there not a column based page with all your registered devises from left to right and all the app's downwards, then a box to "tick" on each device to install or delete multiple app's in one go??? How hard can it be???
I know you can use Titanium but you need to be rooted and still go by each app individual or take all in one go, this do not make any sense since a newer device might not need all the app's.
On Google Play I can see all my app's and then install them one by one with a confirmation box for every one? long and boring task.
A column based set-up where you choose which app's to be installed on what device you have registered seems like a "no-brainer" to me but I have not been able to find anything that resembles that??
Does it exist and am I a knob or is this a major oversight by Google???
All suggestions are welcome.
Robert
The key here is you need to tell Google to restore your phone once you install an OS. If you did this, the Play Store automatically downloads all your previously installed apps.
Also, in Titanium you have the checkboxes on the side as you're asking for, you just deselect the checkboxes besides the red apps pretty much...

[Q] Removing apps from Playstore's 'My Apps'??

I'm a bit confused over the relationship between the apps in the playstore's 'My Apps' list and those apps I have actually installed. I assume the apps in Playstore's 'My Apps' list is simply what I have and had ever installed in current and previous phones. Now I want to have a clean out of 'My Apps'.
I want to remove quiet a few applications from 'My Apps' list (a sort of spring clean, not just un-install them from my phone) and its a slow frustrating process doing it from my phone within the play store app. Every time I delete an app from the phones playstore 'My Apps' list I'm brought back to the top of the list and I have to patiently scroll down to where I had left off, and its now even alphabetical sorted. I used to be able to do this more easily from my PC by browsing all my android apps and clicking on the little trash can icon embedded on the app icon. But now this has been removed!!
Google why are you making this more difficult than it need be or used to be?????? :crying: in frustration.
Does anyone know how you can easily drop apps from your phone and the Playstore 'My Apps' list without going mad?
I don't believe there is an easier way. You could start at the bottom and work your way to the top. I know how frustrating it is.

Aha got my answer from another forum called Phandroid. Thanks to the guys there, its actually really easy. All you have to do on your mobile is go into your 'All' tab in your 'My apps' within the playstore app and long press on the non-greyed out apps. You can multi-select and then delete mulitple apps, cleans out all the installation history. Brilliant, not too obvious though!

[Q] Popup from Google asking to protect my phone?

I just got a popup, supposedly from Google, asking for permission to protect my phone in some way. I should have taken a screen shot. My back button would not work, and I had to choose between "accept" or "deny". I chose deny, and immediately an app started to automatically download and install. The popup came up again four more time, and I chose deny each time. And each time, a new app downloaded and installed. In order, the apps were S Note, SNS Provider, Flipboard Briefing, Hancom Office 2014, and Evernote. Shortly after that, I got a text message from 6583 stating: "FREE MSG Your Mobile Locate app is configured to record your Location History; info may be viewed at http://mymobilelocate.com Open app Settings to change."
What the hell just happened to my phone?
wel.. the site leads to at&t and the apps you installed are official apps (the names atleast). As far as I can tell you are just fine, wonder what the popups looked like though.
It's no big deal. A while back, Google started offering to periodically search your phone's installed apps to make sure there were no malicious apps you might not know are bad news. This started after they had a few apps in the Play Store that were malware, and Google went and forceably uninstalled those apps from people's devices. Since some people probably complained about it as some sort of privacy violation, now they offer you a choice (i.e. be stupid, or let them save your ass from malware). I always click "accept". It only asks once per set up, so either on a brand new phone or a factory reset.
Google already knows everything I do with my device(s) anyway, so why wouldn't I want them to monitor my apps for Malware? It is especially helpful if you install apps from other sources outside the Play Store, since you never know what you're really getting.

Pop-up Ad of Unknown Origin on NotePro 12.2

For about 1-2 months a small rectangular window appears from the up left corner (notification bar) and lands somewhere along the vertical centerline of the screen. The window contains rotating ads from legitimate companies and sits above all other windows. Neither suggested methods worked in opting-out. The first took you to a web page where the three ID codes for a phone. The tablet is WiFi only so the method is useless. The second merhod is to DL and install their app which performs an opt-out operation. This too does not work. Pressing the opt-out button take a window saying 'finished' and then another with an 'exit' button. This was tried three times and the pop-up still pop-ups. The adress on the page you are taken to first has an address: tracker.tcp.re.
Who's tracker is it? What's its purpose? Where does it originate on the tablet? What data is being gathered? Who is the responsible party for its embedding/disseminating your data/info?
I've tried newer/never used and unknown apps. I've looked at the running apps ...... nothing unusual. I can't fined anything suspicious
Thanks for any help that can be shared.

What was the app called that it made you download to opt out?
unfortunately there are a lot of apps that can cause this so its hard to say without knowing what you have installed but knowing the name of the app it wants you to download to opt out might help.

That's the other concern. There was a direct link to an unknown site with no address as this simple browser had no addess line. The site immediately downloaded the app (named 'Opt-out').
It did DL to my DL directory. You had one button to press, that was the install button. This DL'd app immediately flashed and said the pop-up was removed. It wasn't. My fear is it seeking private data with the "ads" just a cover. Who knows where the app resides. Could be anywhere.

That sounds like an airpush ad then.
you should be able to long press on the ad in the notification area and go to "App info" this should take you to the app that is generating the ad so you can disable notifications or uninstall it.
alternatively you can download airPush detector from the play store and it will search your installed apps to check for airpush enabled apps and you can decide what to do with them from there.
you might also check your photos/video folders as sometimes airpush downloads random ad videos to your device and you'll probably want to get rid of them as well, they arent usually very big but they do take up space and can be an annoyance.
