Confusion with my "app storage" - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So my app storage is telling me I have five gb's of this "other" and I have no idea what it could be? All my music and photos and everything are on my SD card and I only have like less the 40 apps. I cannot figure out what can be in the "other" I even moved all my apps to the SD card and the 5 Gb's are still there. Thank you in advanced.

first of all nice 4th of july post lol thats my bday
Second, are you rooted? do you use a custom recovery and flash roms?
zips will account for that other.. also a big big space taker uper is backups of your roms. backup stock thats a good gig easily, flash cm and back it up its possible its just as large (really all depends on how many apps and system apps you have on the image when you backup)
if you have rooted and flash a custom recovery then take a look at your storage, not sure if you use a micro sd along with your internal storage but check both for a folder called clockworkmod and or twrp. Check the properties of those folders if you have them and check their size. Also i once synced my work email to my phone and during the setup i check an option to "always download attachments smaller than 5mb when on wifi" What ended up happening without me even knowing at first was my email synced to my phone and every message that fell within the sync time frame that had an attachment was automatically download to my Downloads folder as the mail first sync and then from then on whenever any message that had an attachment came in and i was on wifi. If i wasnt on wifi then theyd just queue up until i got back on wifi and boom! hundreds and hundreds of word docs, pdfs, images, etc. long story short it ended up taking up a lot of space.

You don't have this phone do you. This phone does not have an sd card slot. The 5gb taken up the "other" is not in the user accessible partition of the storage. That 5gb is taken up by system files etc. To the OP, you only need worry about the second section, as that's the only part of the storage you can access.

Memory issues?

Is anyone having trouble with pictures deleting or becoming unreadable?
I also had a app uninstall its self....
I have had 1 pic problem and a few SD card errors when I know I have 13gigs free. A retry on the download has helped with the app install though.
I downloaded camera zoom ex and when I take pics, usually the first file is unreadable. One recorded video did that as well. No issues with apps yet, lets hope it doesn't get worse.

I haven't had anything with pictures, but I have had the erroneous "not enough room" error and apps have become broken (cannot launch..) and require an uninstall/reinstall. When this happens, in the list of applications, they don't have the "nice" application name, they have the real? name such as net.hexage.radiant.hd
I had installed a circle battery mod widget from the market and when i went to take a screenshot i got a r/o error. But ever since uinstalling said app its been fine.

The attic is kind of weird when it comes to memory. Im thinking it mounts your external like internal and users the actual internal as internal. You have to get a third party file explorer to even see the internal memory. Kind of blows... But once you get used to it you work around it.

So one of my apps that mysteriously uninstalled itself (but the icon remained) decided to start working again (i never bothered to reinstall it and just left the icon, but then it started working again). Weird.
And yeah, even pictures i took that "stayed" are now corrupt. We have memory issues.

I've noticed that the first picture I take is corrupted, I just have to take multiple pictures and everything turns out fine. I downloaded camera zoom fx and its 10x better than the stock camera app.
Do you find less issues using that app? Can it use the stock camera button?

Loving this app, it has torch mode while taking pics... Helps the night shots a lot. Camera button works and it does a ton more than stock Moto cam app can do
Still having memory issues. Wouldnt save a single picture from my email or internet all day. "download unsuccessful" for web pics or "download failed" for email pics.
Pretty lame.
for those of you with issues, are you installing apps to sd card?
i'm thinking what it's doing is when you use apps2sd, it's mounts sdcard-ext as dynamic on the internal memory, but then redirects all sdcard items to sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. ie apps2sd moves apps to /sdcard-ext and sizes that partition as needed (say 400mb apps, it sizes at 500mb). you take a pic, it goes to save it, but the system is now directing it to /sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. it sees that there is only 500mb left and kicks it out or activates the low memory message.
if you're installing apps to the sdcard, turn off the phone, pull the microsd card out and pop it into your computer and see what's on it.
i also think that if you use a microsd card, you forfeit the entire 8gb internal storage.
then again, i could be wrong...
Ive been installing on the internal memory.
Thing is, some stuff saved on the memory card (ie from inet etc) will sometimes just become unreadable. This phone has some caching issues or something.
And judging by all the complaints etc, i doubt its a memory card issue.
ok, i removed my sdcard
storage still reads at 4.77GB internal
when i try to take a pic, it tells me to insert an sdcard.
8gb is a lot of space for apps lol 10k justin beiber fart soundboards
Jusy found this. I thik its basically saying the 8 gigs that are supposed to come built into the phone are already being used. Kinda dumb.... https://motorola-global-portal.cust...71812/~/internal-and-external-memory-(atrix-2)

do you realize how many "talking [insert something stupid here]" apps and "[insert infamous person here] fart sound board" apps there are available?
This damn memory bug is really bothering me... i couldnt save a picture from gmail today to save my life. Failed. Failed. Failed. Cannot load.
I guess i can try a class 4 memory card? I have a 6 now... and with class 10 being out there, seems stupid that this would have issues with anything at all, much less a 6.
Have you tried pulling out your card and reformatting it?
No... i guess i could. Would just be a bit of a pain transferring my 16gb to the PC and back again, but ill give it a shot.
But at the end of the day, the phone does have memory issues, that more than likely be solved with an update, so thats good.

Low memory

I keep getting a low memory message. I have most apps i installed on the sd card, which is 8gb. I can't save evernote or backups. There is little media save 50 pictures. Anyone tell me how to free up some of the internal memory, or the usb storage?

Do you have most of your apps installed on your sdcard or usbstorage? If your using the move to sd card method in manage applications, then it's going to store it in your usbstorage, not your external sd card. This happens with Apps2SD too.
How the hell can someone have their usb storage memory filled up with just apps?
Are you putting music or something in the usb storage, and not on your memory card?
I mean seriously, most apps are small. VERY small.

That's true, but most apps also have additional data that they store in /sdcard. And since the blaze has /sdcard as usbstorage, everything goes there so it fills up quick. I have a lot of apps too but the ones that store data in the usbstorage, I move to /sdcard/external_sd by using GL to SD. Although it only works for gameloft games and data stored in /sdcard/Android and /sdcard/data, those are the two folders that usually take up the most space.
Well, gaming on your phone is the culprit obviously.
I don't have many apps at all, no games.
Now i can't even move any apps to my sd card. It says my memory is too low. I can't attach pictures.or.even open my gallery without getting this.message.
I'm not following.the.usb storage thing. How's it work?
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda premium
Your phone has something like 1 gig of storage that is supposed to effectively be ram where applications are stored, and another 1 gig of memory labelled as usb storage in the phone where data can be stored, or applications can be stored if it is set to "move to sd card".
Then of course, you have the actual SD card, of whatever size is in the phone.
Seriously, I can't say enough times, if your phone is low on memory, you are doing something weird.
For example, those gameloft games, are quite huge, and the additional data they require would go to usb storage. Two or three of them can fill up the phone's space without a problem. This would be true for any phone out there.
Another likely culprit is something simple...you might have been putting your music or video or other large amounts of stuff you want to have on the phone in one of the first two mentioned locations without realizing it. If you mount your phone to the computer, you've notice how two drives show up?
One drive is the "usb storage", and another would be the actual SD card you have in the phone. I don't know why it does this, but I suspect it's common as my sony e-reader does the same thing.
To put it simply, don't store things to the phone's "memory" that you don't need to, and you'll be fine.
usb storage
I took a look and sure enough, the usb storage contained things I thought were on the sd card. I don't have much media on this phone at all. Maybe 70 pictures, no music, a couple videos, and I have no gameloft games at all.
I noticed that some apps are also stored here. I moved the little media to the sd card, but can I also move the apps here?
And is there anyway to change the settings so these files are directed here rather than the internal storage?
"A couple videos" was probably the culprit, as they tend to be big files of course.
About moving the apps to the sd card....allow me comment on that, and then rant a little bit.
Many apps can be moved to the sd card. If it's enabled by the app, you can just go to settings, applications, manage applications or whatever, and select the application you want, and in the same screen where you can uninstall an app, some apps let you move them to the sd card. Not every allows this, and in general, if you have an app with a widget on the sd card, it either won't work, or something weird happens. (Android designed limitation with widgets)
Now, to my rant.
My first android phone was a nexus 1. Great phone, but compared to a lot of phones it has a small amount of program memory. So if people were prone to having lots of apps especially large ones such as google earth, java, or whatever, that space filled up quick.
I think it was around 2.2 when Android started opening up moving apps to the sd card.
To this DAY, you can go into the market comments and pretty much read moron after moron doing things like, "I rated this a 1, because I can't move it to the sd card! Gah, you suck, let me move this to the sd card!"
Some times they would have a point, but more often than not, they wouldn't.
For example, this app that was 25k in size, had 15 comments in a row about people whining to move it to the sd card. SERIOUSLY? 25k is NOTHING, even to a phone with limited memory such as a nexus one.
And then there would be people whining about apps on SD cards for apps that you SHOULD NOT put on an sd card. "What apps wouldn't you want to run on an sd card?", you might ask.
Any app that should be always running, or able to be run by some event changing, while your phone is plugged into the computer.
For example....let's say you have a call blocking app. There are a few, I use one myself. If you move it to the sd card, that app can not function if the sd card is mounted to the computer. Phones mount memory cards just like computers do, and if it's unplugged......it doesn't work! So if you have the card mounted in the computer and your phone rings....guess what, your call blocking app doesn't work, and that annoying jerk is making your phone ring again.
Somewhere, a kitten dies.
I used the call blocking app as an example as something that even though it's not doing anything most of the time, but that when another event happens (your phone ringing), it can't do it's function.
I used to know why widgets on the sd card didn't work, but I suspect it has something to do with just they can't work reliably on the sd card. For example, my preferred music player poweramp, can be moved to the sd card, and of course it has widgets. So.....the dev made an add-on you can download where the widget stays on the phone, the app goes to the sd card.
Personally, I just keep poweramp on the phone memory. Since it's one of my 5 most commonly used apps, it only makes sense, right?
I can't remember if flash for browsers is able to be moved to the sd card yet, but what I do know is people whined and whined and whined about it, not realizing that.........the browser wouldn't work very well if flash was installed to the sd card.
Titaniumbackup and probably other similar apps can force apps to the sd card that are not normally allowed, but they will of course caution you about doing it. Some of that caution verbiage is there for reasons which are in this post, and I'm sure there's other concerns as well.
Moving along to your last question...... that depends.
Some apps can be configured to have a preferred directory location for storage, but realize that there are still phones out there that either don't have memory card slots, or don't have "usb storage". As a result, sometimes it works easily, sometimes it doesn't, but most file explorer apps make moving stuff around pretty easy.
Personally, I'm not really sure what the point of having both is, but it seems to be common. All I know is that having a memory card slot is a good thing. There are a few reasons why I wish I would have just bought a google nexus, but...... odds are the 64gig microsdxc cards work in this phone, and well, I plan to buy one.
Sorry nexus, you're hot.....but having 4 times the music or video on hand, is something I think I would enjoy more.
I'm having the same issues with the Samsung Blaze ~ when I go to Settings, Storage, USB Storage it shows total space 1.40 GB and available 127 MB. When I go to files, usbstorage, there is NOTHING in it and it shows "no files". I have 4 applications I've downloaded, no more. ALL of my pictures and music are on the external card. When I go to active applications, then Storage, it shows System storage 119MB of 1.12GB, USB storage 1.28GB used of 1.40GB, and SD card 4.33GB used of 7.39GB. I don't have games on it at all.
I'm not an Einstein, but I'm getting really tired of everyone telling me I'm obviously not smart enough to have a smart phone. I'm no dummy when it comes to tech.

similar problem - Rhapsody was the culprit
I had a similar problem -- I couldn't see any files in the USB Storage folder in Files, but it was full. In my case, Rhapsody was causing the issue -- by default it downloads music to /mnt/sdcard (or something like that, I changed it and can't remember the address exactly. But from what Cirkustanz said above, the Blaze interprets that address as "USB Storage" (confusing name, that) which is really internal storage. In the advanced settings for Rhapsody I changed it to /sdcard/external_sd and all of a sudden had 700MB free in USB Storage. Lost all of my Rhapsody downloads, however, and will have to add them back.

Its ur internal sd thats the problem u have to clean files out once in a while if u dont it will **** stuff up get astro or any file manager and go folder by folder and delete stuff and ur usb storage doesnt get used its just system internal and external thats all ur partitions in system settings it reads the part ur apps get put in when u put apps on sd as usb thats it but u cant look at them but just clean ur internal sd out clear caches and check lost.dir once in awhile too delete whatevers in there and u should be ok dont forget any videos u shoot in hd will be huge too those r in dcim... Thats why i switch my mounts and i keep my sdcards clean so i can have like 5 6 huge games and still have space but to each his own good luck tho
!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!PLEASE click THANKS if I helped!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!
My wife was complain8ng of this recently. I went through and saved all her pictures to her laptop. Cleared caches and moved apps to sd when I could but that did not help. Then I checked her download folder and found it full of videos from perez hilton .com. lol
This made the phone show that it was almost empty.
My question is why does usb storage show 1.40gb of total space with 9gb of space filled with misc.? Why does the blaze seem to handle its memory so much different than the other galaxy s phones?
Does rooting fix this strange memory setup?
Thanks guys.
(Update)
Took one photo to make sure they were being saved to the external sdcard (16gb) and now the phone says that storage is full again. When I check in settings it shows 1.20gb of pictures when there is only one photo (not sure how big but i know it is not 1gb) and it is not even stored on the phones memory? Instagram will also moy work because it says there is no storage to even take a photo.

For clarity's sake, what is this going to accomplish? I'm running cm10 and can usually manage to keep the blazes memory problems under control just by keeping everything in cloud storage, but if there's another option, I'd be interested in trying it out.

Wow, so after translating what you said back to english I need root for that option and what it does is swsp the external sd for the internal by flashing a zip or editing the fstab file.
I will have to convince my wife of that one. She does not let me root her devices. She needs them to work 100% of the time for work and she saw what I went through with the s2 trying to get JB to run early on.
I will do some more research on this.
Is this something that only happens to some blazes or do all of them have storage issues? My wife was hoping a factory wipe might fix it.

to answer your ? on what it does the blaze stock comes with 4 gigs of memory 2 gigs used by system leaving about 1.12 for device mem and 1.40 for internal mem with the vold.fstab swap ( voldswap.zip ) or the number swap of JB ( ie INT SDCARD 0 change to 1 and EXT SDCARD 1 change to 0 what that does is for example instead of 1.40 gigs of internal space in my personal blaze i have 32 GIGS of space instead of crappy 1.4 works the same on JB ROMS but also if you choose to add files either connect USB into USB CONNECTION or POWER DOWN phone to be on the safe side power down the phone pull the sdcard from the micro sd slot and put into adapter on your PC ( i do this cause i transfer large files and on JB the MTP is a peice of **** and the USB CONNECTION sucks to it stops all of a sudden out of no were ) ( on ICS stock/custom that's not an issue ) but that's what the swap does hope this helps for clarity and you can pick up a 32 GIG San Disk off EBAY fpr 16.98 plus S/H at like 3 bucks a pop and it works cause i have that same card off of ebay

That is awesome three hours of reading this that and the other thing all over the internet and it comes down to swapping two numbers in a file, sheash in an idiot.
The reason I wanted to do this is I have an app that downloads two to five GB of map files and the app just cried when I tried to install it on this phone.
Thank You.
Just an FYI, even though I am using a JBCamera app to store actual photos on my external 32gb uSD card, my internal 1.4gb SDcard was still getting full frequently. Discovered the Quickpic App, creates a large almost 1gb thumbnail file on the internal SDcard. There is an option to turn it off to make this go away in Quickpic.

[Q] No Internal Memory

I need some help here. I have no internal memory on my blaze. I have no games, a hundred pictures or so, and a decent number of apps downloaded. I have used app2sd to move as many apps to the external sd card, but I have consistently run out of memory in a variety of ROMs. I am currently using AOKP ROM, but it is the same case with a few others I have used. I cannot take pictures because my memory is full. Things like evernote will not sync, nook can't download books, etc.
Anybody got any suggestions? I am not really even sure what is taking up all the memory, none of the files are even that large. I can provide any info needed, just not sure where to begin.

Anybody got any suggestions? I am not really even sure what is taking up all the memory, none of the files are even that large. I can provide any info needed, just not sure where to begin.

I used clean master which gave me a good 250mb back. You should try it.

Try getting a dropbox, google drive or skydrive account and loading all your files such as pics, videos and even titanium backup folder etc. Using file explorers suchas astro will still let you view the files as if they were on your phone. Also go through all your apps and clear all the caches. Browsers such as Mozilla can have very large caches especially if there synced to your pc. I use dolphin browser, other small browsers such as opera mini might help based on your preferences, try a few. Google+, maps and other google apps tend to keep a large cache on hand. The online album syncs such as dropbox should resolve the issue.
Oh and google drive offers more space initially than dropbox, skydrive gives you 7 gigs off the jump. If it helped hit thx

I've downloaded skydrive as I've been using windows 8 on my pc and pretty happy with it thus far. Is there a way to change my setting\s so pictures, etc are stored here? Or would I just basically upload them and then delete them from the gallery?

You need to download sky drive to your PC. You can edit the settings from your PC to automatically sync PC when on, and doesn't matter where u delete from PC or phone ,online album will sync delete across all devices. I use all three giving me a total of 14.5 gbs of space, I only keep drop box sync on and use the other two selectively.
Also probally best to setup sync over WiFi only to avoid overage on your data network usage

Ok, so things did not work out for me. I have files synced and uploaded to dropbox and skydrive. However, all the pictures were already stored on my external sd card, the real external sd card which has about 4 of 8 gb free still. So, I'm at a bit of a loss here as to what to do. The 1.39 available storage on the internal usb storage is completely full. THere are no games, music, and a few pictures on it and that it is it. What is taking up so much space?

I have the same problem with mine. Use a file manager and delete the ".thumbnails" folder in the DCIM folder and it frees up a few hundred mb. It might be hidden so you may need a root explorer or plug your usb into the computer
That's how it is for me at least.

You dont sync your browser from phone to pc do you? I use to with mozilla, but ended up with a mobile browser weighing in at around 120 mb (ouch). Use a smaller browser. Another thing do you regularly clear your caches? These can stack up. Also if your photos are all uploaded to dropbox and such, DELETE them from your phone. The ones you use for wallpapers, contacts etc., store on your external card that way to be safe and not delete them when you clear your gallery after new uploads. Last thing check your downloaded files from setting and see which ones can be moved to sd card. Other than that explore your files.
If it helped hit thx
Try wipping Dalvik and cache partition and any thumbnails inside the DCMI folder.

I found the culprit with es file explorer. Sizes of folders were not showing up if I connected to the pc and tried to use the windows file explorer. THere was some file that was almost 1gb in the cwm folder.
I use chrome and it is synced. Should I turn this off?

I would. Also have you ever tried dolphin browser? It loads web pages alot faster, throw in adaway to block popups and youll be solid. Both you can get from the play store. Its up to you but I use jetpack (playstore) with dolphin to improve speed.

Back up all your apps (Either with Titanium Backup) Wipe and factory reset everything,(In cwr go to mounts and format all except external_SD) flash your ROM. Now you should be all clean. Then I suggest getting a 32 GB SD card and use Link2Sd and Directory Bind to move actual apps to your external SD. Here is a great guide on how to use both apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33884286

[Q] Recovering Nandroid backup from LOST.DIR

I recently lost a lot of the data on my external SD card after restoring a CWM 6 backup from the external card. Several folders have had the first letter of their name replaced with μ (mu), the rest capitalized, and contents emptied, others are simply missing. For example "μOWNLOAD." Sadly my clockworkmod folder has become an empty "µLOCKW~1," and I had 3 backups included, most importantly my stock root backup.
I noticed that my LOST.DIR folder had 259 new random number files and is nearly 4 GB, suggesting that the files are stuck in there, but I have no idea how to figure out what is what or even if it is possible to save any of them. I tried the suggestion posted here, but nothing in the clockwork folder was found. I can pick out what I think are the 3 pairs of "system.ext4.tar.a" and "data.ext4.tar.a" files based on them being several megabytes larger than everything else, but I have no idea how to separate them or how to pick out the right "boot.img", "recovery.img", and "cache.ext4.tar.a." I'm assuming that I don't need "cache.ext4.tar,"data.ext4.tar," and "system.ext4.tar," because they all show 0 bytes in the new backup that I made on the internal card.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to save the backup?
EDIT: Also is it "safer" to keep important things on my internal or external card? I kept all of my backups on the external card specifically to avoid something like this happening during a flash or at some other time, but googling tell me that several people have had seemingly random issues with SD cards and the S3.
From my experience everything in the lost. Dir gets its file extension stripped. I had this happen to my music folder and I had to change all the files to mp3. It may be more of a pain than its worth to change every file back. And because there not all the same type who knows what file is suppose to be what
I would move any data off and reformat the card

I had everything of import other than nandroids backed up offsite so the remaining data doesn't matter, and I expect that everything is gone, but no harm in trying.
Also, if you ever need to rename a lot of files at once again, you might want to try File Renamer Basic, it is extremely useful for batch operations like that.
Yea I just used the command line built into windows. I was surprised it had the option to do it. Ever since they stopped basing windows off Dos they got rid of some commands. I thought I was gonna have to get a live version of linux. But if there isn't anything wrong with the current rom I would just make a new backup. Format the card first before you move anything back on it

I was having terrible battery drain when first got the phone, took out my SD-Card and now get nearly 5-6 hours screen on time!
I don't know if it was the SD-Card or the new modem/rpm (I'm still on the OTA ICS one)
but for me I use google play and I keep a copy of all my nandroids on my computer for safe keeping. and keep only the ones I need recently on the internal, and I have plenty of space left, so for me it was better to just keep the SD-Card out, it was making it hard to choose to put on sd-card or internal LOL
Maybe I've been lucky, but coming from the Droid 2 the battery life on this seems amazing (CleanROM), I have had the external card in since I bought it however.
I was mainly worried about stability issues, mainly I was always worried that a factory reset or changing roms would affect the internal card, so it would be safer to keep things on the external card.
I'm sorry if i have mistakes in this text . i'm persian . i don't know english well/
I have a solution for this problem:
I've lost my data twice. first time i thought that it is virus so i format my SD card .
this time I LOST some important data therefore i tried to get them back.
I noticed that LOST.DIR is included my data.
I connect my phone to PC (galaxy s4) then i copied all LOST.DIR files in to my PC.
then i opened one of them with windows photo viewer. ( right click -> open -> choose windows photo viwer) then i saw one of me missing photos (luckly).
however it will take a long time to take back all of your missing photos but still you will get it.
(sorry for mistakes)

Not enough memory, delete some item? ?

So my sister has her phone when she does anything this message comes up she getting very pissed off any way on solving this ? she has space and she has a sd card ... whats the deal.

The deal is that we only have 2GB of internal storage, which is where the camera defaults to. This can be filled very easy if one likes to take lots of pictures. There are a lot of ways around this, but the easiest for a non techie is to download a 3rd party camera app and set the storage to the external card. You could also swap mount points or try to symlink it as well.

I have a hard time understanding this, too. Settings>Storage tells me that I have only about 60 MB free in "USB Storage." It also tells me that I have 93 MB of "Pictures, Videos" there. The trouble is, I have no pictures or videos in USB storage. It's all on the external SD card. The camera saves to the external SD card, and all my music, photos, and videos are there, not in internal storage. It even tells me I have 3.4 GB of "Miscellaneous files" in USB storage, which is impossible. That 3.4 GB is actually what's on the external SD at the moment. It tells me that over 1 GB of apps are stored there, even though the apps actually there come to far less---maybe there's app data that's adding to the total.
The only time it becomes a problem is when I run NewsRob, which invariably tells me it doesn't have enough memory to work.

For pics and such, use Google drive, drop box or sky drive. Mine is set to upload over WiFi only. After my pics are up, I delete them from gallery. Also, make sure all music is on external sd . Then go to settings/storage erase SD card. This should clean up any uneccesary files or clutter. Last, move all possible apps to SD and clear all caches. FYI , if on any cm 10 variants don't clear the caches to fast or the phone will freeze for 20-40 secs. That is all

Well, I made an interesting discovery last night. I found that, even though I had set the PodKicker app to store podcasts on the external SD card, it had somehow reverted to internal USB memory, and had dumped a bunch of large files in there.
I also found that my Kindle app had deposited a bunch of files in internal USB memory. There's no way to tell Kindle to put them on the external card, but I supposedly only had a few books residing there. An examination of the kindle cache, however, disclosed almost two hundred, taking up a big chunk of memory. I deleted the whole directory, started Kindle, and let it re-download the few that I need. I think somewhere along the line I had to re-register the Kindle app, and it just left a bunch of old files there that it couldn't use anymore.
Between these two purges I freed up about 150 MB of internal USB storage.
150mb isn't much and will be eaten quickly.
a lot of apps install to the internal but load a bunch more on the external.
Camera ICS + is a good camera replacement that can save directly to the external SD.
Also, run ES File Explorer and use it's SD card analysis to see what is taking up space. I know that if you have your google photos synced, even just the thumbnails database file will be up to 1gb.
Move any Titanium or CWM backups to the external SD, but make sure you remember where they are when you go around deleting things.
I also found a trash can folder that was huge so I'm pretty sure that the internal SD card isn't fully freeing up memory when you delete things.
Also go to your App Manager and see which things are taking up a lot of space. I know that Google+, Gmail, Chrome, Facebook, Grooveshark and a few others take up a lot of space.
