I've been running AOSP ROM's on my evita for a while now, but apparently with the 3.4 kernel you now need hboot 2.14 or higher and mine's at 1.09. My phone was unlocked with S-ON, but I did "fastboot oem lock" this morning because I read that it's necessary for an RUU. I downloaded the 2.20 RUU and tried to run the installer but I always get an Error [170] USB Connection Error. I have the HTC and adb drivers installed successfully and have tried to run the RUU as admin in both Sense and fastboot (bootloader). I'm a bit stumped and would really like to get AOSP back on my phone.
You need to S-off first.

Should I use facepalm for that then?
EDIT
I got s-off, but still no go. Still the error 170.
I know on my old Incredible I was able to rename the rom.zip from the RUU as PB99IMG.zip and put it on the root of my sdcard. Then in hboot it would detect it and ask to flash it. This isn't happening on my evita though. Is there a way to do that, or is that only for older htc devices?
Put phone into fastboot and try again. Check error log to see if it fails to identify your phone.
Open command prompt and type adb devices, if it does not see it then try installing new drivers. If it does see it then enter " adb shell reboot oem-78" that will reboot your phone in to RUU ready fastboot. Open ruu and try running it again.

Where can I find this error log? It did see my device, I did that command (which ended at the black htc screen) and I ran the RUU again but I still get the error 170. I'm also using this RUU http://bugsylawson.com/index.php/fi...320911-2-101053225l-release-271865-signedexe/
Sounds like a bad download. Is it 568.22 mbs? Try roomyshare.com/ruu-evita-ul-cingular.html
You can find it in the list.

It is that size, though I may try the link you gave.
EDIT
Okay, I think I found out what I've been doing wrong. I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119610 and it turns out that the file I've been trying does NOT include the 2.14 hboot that I need. The one I need is the latest JB release, but someone said that if you flash it with superCID and S-ON that it will brick your device. I have superCID but S-OFF, does anyone think that will brick my device? Should I flash the RUU with the 1.09 hboot (which I'm running) first, and then flash the newest RUU? Also, it looks like the link I provided offers flashable OTA's of each update. Would those work/be recommended for TWRP?
Change cid to cingular "cws_001" I think. Super cid can cause brick.

Well I didn't do that...haha. I read on another forum that TWRP doesn't support that cid check function or something and to just remove it from the updater-script so I tried that and flashed the latest OTA zip in TWRP and it failed after a few steps. I tried booting and it didn't get to the boot animation so I rebooted to recovery and restored my backup. I'm going to try a stock zip without the modified updater-script and restore my CID to normal and try again.
EDIT
Well, I restored the CID to CWS__001 and I still get that check_cid error

Hm, okay then, let me ask another question. I'm on hboot 1.09 and I need 2.14 to run AOSP ROM's now. What's the best way to get there if I already have ROM's installed. Is it what I'm doing right now or should it be something else?
EDIT
The latest JB RUU is picking up my device now and offering the update, 2 seconds away from doing it....

Hi. I am looking my update my hboot from 1.09 to 2.14. I am S-OFF now, also running the Sense 5 rom now(TWRP recovery).
I have downloaded the Latest JB 3.18 RUU from instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2064621.
What else do I need to do before flashing the RUU to the device?
For what it's worth, I was on stock 2.20, got s-off and unlocked bootloader with superCID, and ran the 3.18 RUU with no problems. I didn't need to relock or anything.

RUU's still fail after Jet to 1.09 due to version reported on mmcblk0p23.
Fix here:

Note one user reported that going from 3.17 back to 1.81 ended in a bricked phone.
After Jet to 1.09 and altering mmcblk0p23 version, RUU accepted flashing, but bricked phone.

You don't need to run an ruu.... you downgraded your boot loader so just go on to flashing ROMs
You can flash the old radios and you should be set

Fastboot flash unlocktoken unlocktoken.bin
Replace unlocktoken.bin with the location of your old unlock token

Can only boot to bootloader and all RUU failed
I am in a bit of trouble at the moment. I will try to describe what I have done to end up where I am now.
I have a Telstra HTC One XL. Recently upgraded an already unlocked, rooted HOXL to JB using the OTA update (big mistake I know now). This upgraded the hboot to 2.14 and software to 3.17.8xxx.
Spent a lot of time trying to re-root. TWRP didn't work (no touch response). So I eventually found the Interim CWM Recovery (no touch) by Modaco. This seemed to work well and I managed to root the phone.
Then i followed the instructions to flash to KingBeatZ 1.2.0 ROM. Booted fine but had no touch response too.
So I wiped KingBeatZ 1.2.0 and went for the nightly CM10. Again, booted fine but no touch response.
OK, so I figured I should just go back to my restored data. Tried that but apparently no restore data (didn't realise a wipe wiped the restore data as well, what is the point of that?)
So I decided to wipe CM10 to try flashing the Stock Rooted Telstra ROM by pablo11. This wipe however seems to have wiped incorrectly and this is where my real problem begins. I can now only boot to BL and Recovery. I cannot mount the sdcard so I have no way of pushing ROMS to my phone. I have tried a Telstra RUU and the latest Asia one. About to try the 1.89 Telstra RUU but I don't think that will make any difference. The setups do not detect an existing version on my phone, and all fail with Error 155. I have read that this error generally occurs due to unlocked bootloader so I have already relocked it.
I do not know what I should do now to restore any functionality to my HOXL. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't run the RUU for a different carrier (CID), and you can't run an RUU for an older version. So neither 1.89 Telstra or an Asia RUU will work. You may be stuck waiting for the 3.17 RUU (don't think its been posted yet?).
You might also be able to make your own RUU by sticking the ROM in the Development forum in an RUU package. I don't know the specifics, and haven't done it myself. But I think it was done for Rogers, which never had a proper RUU package. So others might be able to advise you better on this.

You would need the .img files EX: system.img boot.img
Since our ROMs aren't packaged that way it won't work.
There's a way to create the system.img but its beyond me, and I do believe if it isn't signed it will fail
The only thing you can flash in hboot by ruu without s-off without being signed would be a boot.img
I would suggest trying to flash a stock ROM and a different kernel, or waiting for the ruu

AT&T HOX from Android 4.2.1, with 3.18 firmware. Attempting to get to CM 10.1
Rooted and flashed TWRP via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41830252&postcount=201
Moved on to Facepalm S-off http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155071, was getting error 99.
Used the Viper solution from ChongoDroid on page 17 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38186473&postcount=163 using viper from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087443
Install Viper from TWRP, Viper install stops at 0.00%, will not progress. Hard restart via power button battery remove sim, attempted s-off again. At some point I ended up getting the correct error 92. Success! Run 'fastboot oem boot', get list of errors, wait for boot into Android. Boot stops at white HTC splash screen, android will not boot.
Panic, hard restart back into bootloader, and this is where things go hazy (it was 5 in the morning by now). At this point I'm sure I put in some commands I should not have via adb (don't remember which ones), and did a factory reset via hboot. Recovery now brings me back into the bootloader. Bootloader shows *** TAMPERED ***, ***RELOCKED *** and *** Security Warning ***. I'm still S-ON with hboot 2.14.0000.
When in fastboot, my phone will not list via 'adb devices'. FAQ Q16 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136172) says if I did a factory reset in hboot, my SD mem is wiped and i need to format it from device manager. Device Manager shows my phone as Android USB Devices > My HTC and options are Update Driver Software..., Disable, and Uninstall. Updating drivers gives me a drivers up to date notice. No option to format the SD
Word is that if it turns on, it isn't bricked, but if I can't get my adb to recognize my phone, what is there that I can do to fix it? I'm on 64 bit Windows 7.
alright, first off, you flashed a ROM for the international quad core One X and you're lucky not to have bricked your phone. Secondly, what you're gonna need to do is run the 3.18 ruu and restore your phone to factory settings with that. That's the only way to recover from factory reset in bootloader. Before you do, you need to be S-Off. Which you are, correct?
Edit: re-reading this, it appears you're not s-off. I'm gonna need to call in some help here because 3.18 ruu with SuperCID will brick you, but I don't think you can use a lower RUU since you're s-on. Anyone know what to do? If you are s-off and I just misread your post, then go ahead and run the ruu.
If it turns on, there's always a way to fix it!
Adb requires an os to work, since you can't boot to your os, no Adb
That being said, in bootloader, you should be able to access your phone with fastboot. Boot to bootloader/fastboot with your phone plugged in to your pc.
Do: fastboot devices and confirm that fastboot commands reach your phone, then we will move on to the next step.

Correct, I am still s-off, and 'adb devices' gives an empty list, and does not list my phone. I cannot send commands to my phone via adb commands.

Yes, sorry. I realized my mistake as soon as I posted, but since I'm a new member I can only edit or reply every 5 minutes.
Yes, I am S-ON. S-ON, not S-OFF.
And aha, yes. 'fastboot devices' does list my phone.
Good good. So first you'll want to unlock your bootloader again since it's relocked. Just flash the unlock_code.bin or whatever it's called again that you previously used.
Sometimes if you're relocked it does the unlock process like it's going to unlock but then leaves you relocked. If this happens press and hold power to simulate a battery pull and try again. It should work eventually. Might take several tries.

You should be able to S-OFF with viperxl without any problems just by flashing viperxl and following the S-OFF thread right after.
So ViperXL finally finished downloading, and I've sent the command to push the .zip to /sdcard in prep to install it with TWRP, but it's been stuck there for 15+ minutes. Should I be worried? Should I restart?

I've been trying to research the solution on my own and I'm confused. I think my hboot is out of date but in order to update it I need to have s-off and Super CID enabled (or change my CID to 111111 or 00000, can't remember which). My phone is from Rogers, I'm on hboot 1.11
I found a guide for fastboot oem readcid which reads:
Connect your phone with USB Debugging enabled
Open up an adb shell (if you don't know how to do this, Google it!)
Reboot into fastboot mode in the Bootloader.
Type: fastboot oem writecid 11111111
Type: adb reboot-bootloader
Type: fastboot oem readcid
If it says 11111111 then you have SuperCID
You can reboot as normal
Click to collapse
When following the steps (only typing fastboot oem readcid, not the other lines) my cid is stated as: ROGER001
I do have S-ON enabled if that matters. I know I have to disable it but I'm not sure if I have to do that before or after I rewrite my CID, against some more confusion on my part and I've read doing it wrong can brick my device.

So I followed the steps and was able to enable S-OFF and achieve CID 11111111. I tried to update the hboot following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2156686
I tried installing the first version of the Hboot and when I rebooted the screen hung on the CM 10.1 boot logo. I tried to enter recovery through fastboot but a red exclamation mark screen would load. I reinstalled recovery through fastboot and then tried to do a factory reset through recovery and fastboot and my device is now stuck on the HTC logo when booting. I've tried reinstalling different versions of hboot (which I downloaded from those instructions) and nothing happens. Please advise, as of now my phone won't boot.
Edit:
I think what caused this problem was flashing this file: /ALL FILES FROM OTA 3.17 T-MO germain hboot 2.14 (incl recovery and other firmware files, be careful with that).
I'm pretty sure I did the firmware and recovery files as it took 60s to flash and I remember seeing a lot of RADIO files being written. My cell phone is a Rogers cell phone is there a stock version I can re-flash to make it work?
Edit II:
I was able to mount my phone via recovery and install cm 10.1. However, the phone isn't responding to any touch.
Which version of CM10.1 did you install? It sounds like it's an older one because they're not compatible with the newer touchscreen firmware. Download the latest nightly and flash that and you should be ok.

Okay I finally got her working. I followed instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159863 to re-install the touch panel firmware, installed the corrected hboot update and upgraded to the latest cm 10.1. Cheers to everyone who contributed and helped me out!
For anyone who may find this thread in the future, the best thing to do would have been run an older RUU because there is no 3.17 RUU i believe and then either install the ota through stock recovery or Download the OTA through android (check for updates)

I was wondering if you could help me as I am getting the same error as the original poster and I can't update cyanogenmod. The only difference I think is that I am on the AT&T htc one x. I'm just looking for some direction so I don't end up bricking my phone. Thanks!

Nope! I have super cid never bothered with s-off. Is it required? I'm also on hboot 1.14...
You can't be serious.
Did you not read the rest of this thread? Or the clear install instructions on the cm10.1 thread? Must s-off and RUU to 3.18. Ugh.

I am looking for a Stock T-Mobile Jelly Bean image that won't brick my phone. I tried searching for one, but I couldn't find anything or I found RUUs for outdated versions of HBoot. I am trying to revert back to stock, but I am sorta scared to do so with an outdated RUU. I have HBoot version 2.15 and Radio version 1.13.50.05.31. Thanks in advance.
Would this be the RUU I have to download? http://bugsylawson.com/files/file/1...531-10305008l-release-309489-signed-ics-2exe/
I would just prefer a nandroid backup of the stock image that I can just flash with CWM.
I downloaded the RUU, I just need to know if that is the correct one for my phone before I use it. I really don't want a bricked phone. I checked the MD5sum already and it matches, that is the only thing holding me back.

I have ran that RUU with the same hboot and radio as you. Why do you think it would brick your phone? you haven't supercid and have locked your bootloader right?
(didn't download from that site though)

Okay, thank you for the reassurance. I just am pretty paranoid about bricking my phone. I have been looking up how to use RUUs for the last day or so, I just couldn't find anything on how to select the right one. Thanks again.
I just checked out your link and I am downloading now. I do not have SuperCID and I will be looking my boot loader.

If you are on TMOB US then it's for you. Furthermore, you can match thr CID of your phone to that in the RUU.exe --> Firmware.zip --> android-info.txt.
You'll have to extract firmware.zip from temporary files when you run RUU without connecting phone.

I ended up using that RUU that was linked earlier in this thread and everything went fine. I just don't have the stock recovery. I guess that isn't that much of a problem though.

The RUU installs the Stock Recovery automatically. You don't have to do anything extra.
You can find stock recovery (if you want to keep it for any purpose) inside the RUU (extraction would require you to run the RUU and then extract the recovery from Temporary Files)
OR
you can find it in the forums.
Hmmm, that's strange. Oh well I guess. When I tried to go into the recovery it just showed a red exclamation mark with a phone under it. I don't really need a recovery right now. Thanks for letting me know where I can find it.

I believe that is the stock recovery. The red exclamation mark is telling you that you don't have access to it. Perfectly normal.

I have the same radio but different hboot ...

Yes, I think it will give you an error with that cid. Someone could correct me, but with s-off you can run whatever ruu you want.

So I should be able to run the RUU with lower boot like mine and it will upgrade the boot to 2.15 -
Is it true that with 2.15 hboot, modifying the CID is not allowed ?
Any reason why I should stay with 1.13 HBOOT and not go to 2.15 Hboot? Meaning any disadvantages of upgrading to HBOOT 2.15 ?
Well, say you updated your phone via ota & your cid is European or something. And all of the ruus for that CID are lower hboots. If u are s-on and and needed to ruu you wouldn't be able to.
But there is a guide to run a ota.zip for those people, so it isn't hopeless.
So not too many disadvantages.
In fact I just installed the newest Rom and firmware today. So my hboot is 2.16.
And the gossip is that update will be officially put out by HTC in a few weeks.

Remember this.
if you want to go stock again in future (warranty purpose)
some providers have only provided an ota (only ruu with lower hboots) when upgrading to jb. So downgrading gets hard
It's not that easy to flash an ota as is a ruu.
If your s-off downgrading is no issue.

Hi everyone,
This is my very first post and I'll admit I am a NOOB.
As I've searched XDA and Google for my questions, I am really at a loss and thought I would pose my question(s) to the community.
I have a Rogers HTC One X(Evita) running CM 10.0, I am currently S-ON, with TWERP 2.3.1
I would like to install the latest CM but it would seem my HBOOT (1.11) needs to be upgraded.
My first question is if my CID is Roger001 is this similar to being SuperCID?
If so, which firmware is recommended? Which is the latest HBOOT I should upgrade to?
I guess this brings me to my next question, what exactly do I need to be able to upgrade my HBOOT?
I've seen a few walkthroughs but none mention Roger001 as CID and I'd rather not risk bricking my phone.
If you need any other information, please let me know.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
You definitely need to update your phone in order to flash the latest cm ROM. But, with your phone in its current state you'll brick it. You don't have SuperCID (11111111), you'll definitely need to get that first, then get s-off, then you can RUU up to the latest. Links to everything you need are in this thread.

Thanks Tim.
I'll give that a whirl and let you know how it turns out.
Another silly question, what exactly is RUU?
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
RUU stands for ROM Update Utility. It basically takes your phone back to being completely stock, including recovery. The beauty of being s-off when you run an RUU is the s-off status survives the process, and so will your unlocked bootloader. So all you need to do when it's finished is flash TWRP again via fastboot, then flash your ROM via TWRP.
Sent from my Evita
Ahh
That makes perfect sense!
If I wanted to stay stock, I could?

Yeah there's nothing stopping you. Then if you change your mind it's as simple as following the steps I mentioned before.

I haven't had a chance to try anything as of yet but I've been doing some reading, could I use the One X Att all-in-one kit 3.0.1 to obtain SuperCID as well S-Off?
I tried another apparently popular program yesterday but it didn't work, as my CID is still Roger001.
Thanks!

Hey timmaa,
Just wanted to say thanks for the help!
I managed to get CID 11111111, as well as S-OFF.
I've just relocked and I am currently downloading the Rogers stock RUU, with that comes HBoot 2.14 and the latest CM!
Thanks again:good::laugh:

So, I flashed that latest Rogers RUU using ARUWizard, everything looked to be okay, as now I am now on H-Boot 2.14.
However, I cant boot into anything..
For some reason, when it tries to boot up it shows the CyanogenMod logo when loading but nothing.
Windows recognizes my phone and tries to install new drivers but fails.
I can boot into the bootloader but when I hit recover, the screen goes black and then after awhile a red ! with a phone beneath it shows up.
Any ideas anyone?

Ok, firstly you didn't need to relock your bootloader to run the RUU because you have s-off. And what exactly is aruwizard? And how did you flash CM after you ran the RUU?

I followed the steps from the link you gave me, under the RUU section, as there was a guide on how to install an RUU for Rogers HTC One X.
It said to relock the phone, so, I did.
ARWizard was part of the guide.
The weird thing is, I didn't flash CM, I flashed the Rogers RUU, so, I'm not even sure how CM10 is even on my phone.
I can get to the Bootloader but I can't launch TWERP and my windows PC now doesn't recognize my phone, it says installing drivers but never does. I had HTC Sync installed in hopes that it would help, it didn't.
Is my only option to do a Factory Reset in Hboot? I've read ill lose all my info on the SD card.
Thanks
Which RUU did you run? Something has gone wrong.

I really do appreciate the help, by the way.
I'm not familiar with that method, but it seems to me that it doesn't do a full RUU. And evidently it hasn't because you still have cm on your phone. What hboot version does your phone list in bootloader now? You could just run the at&t 3.18 RUU which will do the whole job. You're s-off so it should be fine.

I am 2.14 HBOOT and S-off.
The problem is that while my Windows PC recognizes my phone, it doesnt load the drivers and therefore, I cant send any ADB commands.
I am not even able to go into TWERP.
How will I be able to run the AT&T if I cant push any ADB commands from my PC?
You don't need any adb commands to run an RUU, but you do need the pc to recognize the phone. I'd try uninstalling all drivers, then installing them again to see if it helps.

Ota is not the same as aruwizard zip. Aru zip is exactly the same as Rom.zip you find inside ruu files, evita ones get the name pj83img.
Not sure why everyone thinks ota is ruu, nowhere is it refered to as being the same thing.
Maybe the firmware.zip in the ota managed to flash though hence your hboot and other firmware was upgraded.
If you follow the "or" method for flashing the zip it actually should work. The better correct answer is once s-off to download/install the latest ruu available that you want and ota up from there.

Thanks guys.
I'll try uninstalling the phone drivers and reinstall them, hopefully, it'll allow my PC to see my phone.
Worse case scenario, if my computer doesn't load the drivers for my phone, what are my options?
What if I select factory reset from HBOOT?
