dbrand N4 Front Piece??! - Nexus 4 Accessories

We're toying with the idea. Would you want this for your device? Price would be firm at $4.
We originally gave the front piece a try for the Nexus 4. The slight curvature on the right and left sides of the face mean that the skin would have to end around 1.5-2mm short on each side. This also means there is no possibility for full bevel. The front skin would be split into individual top and bottom pieces. If we find an overwhelmingly positive response, we'll release this within a week. All of the cutouts, as well as the outer limits of each top and bottom piece would (obviously) be as precise as possible, with as much coverage as is physically possible without any possibility of the skin peeling up over time.

I would but personally I would want a screen protector as well. Maybe a hybrid piece with a screen protector option to the front skin? I have the same issue with the Nexus 7, but I cut my own screen protector.

No chance for a screen protector. Sorry about that man, it's just that it requires a 100% dust-free facility (something we don't have right now). Even a single speck of dust on a given unit would = defective.

Yes please. I'd be all over that.

Yes! Do it! I'd buy 2 right off the bat!

I would give that a try. The front of the nexus 4 has slight curve to it so no clue how the skin would fair on a curved surface, there would be a chance for it to flap off but knowing how strong the back skin sticks, front should be fine. Also one thing to take in consideration, many people use screen protectors for the front. Those who would have those pricy ones would bail on the front skins. Yes you could cut the screen protectors but I don't know if people would want to do that. Another thing, there are various cases for the phone, I'm guessing most people just use a bumper, since the skin would be offsetted on all sides by 1.5-2 mm it should be fine. I'm not saying its not a good idea, just a few things to take in consideration. You guys could give it a whirl and see how it fairs before you keep it on your site officially. Then again, at 4 bucks it is awesome.
I would give it a try

i wish you guys made phone cases with the same patterns/designs

No please don't! Dbrand is known for not only their precision, but how closely it covers the entire surface. Makes the skin blend in with the phone so much that it starts looking like a part of it. The front skin, as it would not go over the curves will look like a patch over the screen. Take a look at how bad the dry application SPs look because they cannot go over the curved edges compared to their wet counterparts. A front skin thus would be completely contrary to what you guys strive for.
Not only that, but since one of the main features of a nexus is the smooth, buttonless screen that aids swipe gestures, a front screen would hinder the movement. Also, and this might just be me, front skins cheapen the look of the phone and make the screen look smaller.
Again, this is just my .02

I'd be willing to try it

What would you do about the LED light? Then there are other cutouts like the sensors and stuff which would make it ugly in my opinion and so its a no from me..

Would there be static colors available too or only textured?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

It would be a little piece on the top and then a little one on the bottom? I don't think that would look very nice. Any pictures?

I'm going to vote no, I don't think the front pieces would work well with any screen protectors, the back skins are plenty
Sent from my Nexus 4

If you had some sort of mock-up or possibly some real life pics that could make my decision. Without seeing what it could look like, I can't imagine it looking that great.

I voted NO, I've spent too much on finding the right screen protector so that I can keep the screen looking like new. Now if people had one of the glass screen protectors like the fantom4, maru labs or Holy grail then maybe it would be a good idea.

You guys are being irrational. A simple solution to this problem would be to put a screen protector over or under the skin. That's what i do with the rear skin. I just cut off a little piece of the protector so when i need to take it off i can without removing the skin, same idea

Need a picture to imagine how it would look like

i have the current oem ones from htc got it from expansys i might try the reelook ones on amazon for only 10 bucs
I use Zagg invisishield because when you put them on correctly (a lot of people claim to get the this bit right and don't) they are simply the best there is, no scratches at all, it's stuck in place and it looks great, it's good at keeping fingerprints away too, no gloss just an almost rubbery texture which does a good job of hiding any imperfections on the screen if you have any.
They are the best as in terms of robust strength, ppl will say they're not but they are, the only thing your left deciding is what feel you want, the Zagg's have a rubbery texture like i said whereas the others like griffin and rocket fish have sometimes mirror effect, tinted effect (so it can only be viewed from the front)
Some with a Matt effect.
Theres loads to choose from but it's all down to preference.
As for the case you've picked, yea it's nice
All you need is your screen protector now, the ones you chose will do the job, but they're a pain to fit and are most prone to peel and scratch.
I got this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-X-SCRE...ting_LaptopAccessories_RL&hash=item2a11c88cc4
It works really well. You just need to apply it in a room with little dust as possible. You just drop it on the phone. It will suck itself on the phone and than you take qtip and get all the air out. Got mine perfectly that people don't even see that it's on
But I still like the screen better without the protection. It feels smooth but not the same

Ghost armour is wayyyyyy better than zagg, looks better, feels better, doesn't smudge like zagg does. Have zagg on my transformer and attracts fingerprints and smudged like crazy, the ghost armour on my nexus s hardly gets any finger prints and rare smudge, can't wait to get to the mall to get a ghost armour installed on my sensation, p.s girlfriends zagg on dhd looks like crap after same time as the nexus s ghost armour looks prestine

I tried Zagg on my Vibrant and even my iPad. The texture and feel is annoying if you like the smooth feel of glass. What I look for in a screen protector is total invisibility (as in you don't know it is there) and the Zagg doesn't handle that.
The final straw for me was when I noticed vertical lines that showed up like a rainbow when the screen was on. I did some research and found that I was far from alone with my problem (yes I put it on perfectly) and got a replacement. That one had a similar problem so I trashed it and Zagg. I still have the one on my iPad (though it has a couple of the lines as well) but I will not buy Zagg again.
As for protectors like the ones discussed in this thread being prone to peel and scratch... Wrong. I put a Realook ( my Vibrant and it still looks new (meaning it looks like glass) after some relatively heavy use being in pockets with keys and pocket knives as well as more than a few drops. I passed the phone on to my wife who's purse is a phone scratching machine and even she hasn't damaged the screen protector. If she does somehow scratch it I have a couple of spares (I think that one game with three).
I just put the screen protector that is being discussed in another thread (says 'the best so far' in the title) on my Vibrant and it is perfect. Unless I tell you that it is there you wouldn't know that I have a screen protector on my phone. The fact that they are crystal clear, feel like bare glass, and end up costing less than $1 each makes this a no-brainer. I can buy 20 of these for the cost of one Zagg AND it is a superior product.

Several posters, including me, have had problems with corner bubbles with that SP on the Sensation. May work fine on the Vibrant, like the Realook, but the curved screen on the Sensation can be problematic. Not quite a no-brainer.

I have one on my Sensation right now. I would take pictures but it looks like a naked phone and you wouldn't see it.
I don't know what I did differently but I have no bubbles on the corners. I basically just did a 'peel and stick' install and didn't use a hair dryer and all of that stuff. Maybe I just got lucky.

Understand. Appears to be a crap shoot. Mine also had pits and dings in the surface, which would have made it unacceptable even if the bubbles weren't there. I tried everything but a blowtorch to fix it, and no dice. Moving on to wet SP's, which so far have their own issues. Dang curved glass...
Does this cover the whole glass? I mean some screen protector only covers the flat surface of the screen, does this one covers even the beveled edges of the screen?

But the protector is.cut perfectly for the sensations screen its just that semi round cut out that intrigues me. Or maybe the guy sent me the wrong protector.

I just got the same protectors and posted in the other thread. They are great in my opinion. Way better than the rubber kind.
To answer your question, the cut-out is for a light sensor under the glass. Yes, it is there, but nearly invisible. Shine a bright light at the screen and you'll see it.

Got the lime green one today, think it absolutely rocks, all I will say is the lime green seems to give the camera a green tint, now I have only seen it once and not sure if it was the lighting conditions, but it is something to think about.
hated this case. Haven't used it once.

Do you mind posting a picture of the nexus 4 with the light blue case on?
The suction effect is disappointing to me. Otherwise a very nice case.
Would you mind posting pictures on how the phone looks with red Cruzerlite on? Have you seen or tried out the new design (andy-circuit-case) for the Nexus 4? And does the suction effect wear off at some point? Or is it just really blatantly obvious with only certain colors? Sorry for asking so many questions but I'm really curious lol.

I've seen it but haven't review it yet. I am sure I will looking into that
I don't think the suction effect wears off because the back of the phone is glass ..the lighter the color the more obvious it is. I was thinking maybe the old baby powder trick might get rid of that ..gonna try it later on
The colors you see on the video are the only ones I actually have.

Just got the new CruzerLite cases for the nexus 4 and they look incredible and fit snug and perfect holes for all buttons. Attaching pictures of them. They have a nice lip on the top so you can place phone upside down w no worries of touching glass. Definitely with the $12.90 price each.

Not a bad looking case, BUT no protection for the chromed buttons of the N4, so I'll definitely pass on this. The Seidio Active case/holster combo should be available for ordering any day now

What are you talking about? Those volume and power buttons are nicely tucked inside the case openings with a lip around them just like the lip all around the top to protect the front glass.

I have the androidified case on my N4 as well, i love the look of it and the price at $13 was nice. I generally have no gripes about the case, however I need more protection and this is just merely a stopgap until a seidio active case/holster combo is available

"tucked in" does not equal "protected", not to mention the additional large openings provide that many more areas for dust and minute debris to enter the case (and yes, I've had this happen to me so I know it can happen). But back to the buttons themselves, as an example, take the Poetic Atmosphere case. While I will say that one does not provide the moderate shock/breakage protection that classic TPU case does, it does fully cover the buttons, and even more importantly, it goes a long way toward making the buttons easier to find and to press (which on the N4 is very helpful). Either way, none of these cases provide the grip, protection, overall feel of the Seidio Active case, not even a contest in those areas. Over the last few years I've found that this case provides maximum protection, without the over-the-top bulk of, for example, the Otterbox.

Cases with front-coverage

I'm looking for a decent full body case that also extends around to the front of the phone and covers around the screen like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WHITE-BLACK...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item5af1d2978c
Just not a huge fan of white, and reason I'd like to be able to cover over the camera and bottom of the phone is so that it will overlap the screen protector's edge that I have on it (basically the case would be covering where the screen protector ends).
Any suggestions?
PS: I kind of like the look of this one: http://www.amazon.com/Google-Ringke-Selling-Premium-Package/dp/B00B7QGT6U/ref=pd_bxgy_cps_img_z
But the front doesn't extend over.
And then there's this where it doesn't cover the front of the screen, but bevels out abit from the front of the screen from the picture. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-Nexus-4-...Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&var=&hash=item4171fea870

I'm using a cut (meaning kiosk didn't have one in stock so they cut from another that stops just under the camera and lil past bottom of visible screen) invisible shield, thus why the case coverage in the front like the white one I linked would be perfect cuz it would cover the exposed portion of the front screen.

Oh, I mean this is the one I got, maybe not us good but same military stretchy stuff as invisible shield. But man does it cling to surfaces.. I have my bumper on it to though so it doesn't really cling. Probably not what you're gonna wanna go for, but I don't know why you bought half of a screen protector from a kiosk at that price. I've never tried invisible shield so I wouldn't know how good they are.

Oh it's not half a screen it's bout 90% front coverage (starts just shy under the camera, and ends just shy of the notification LED, with basically about half an inch of overlap over the actual visible screen), the white one I originally linked would cover the overlap just fine.
Also the one I got was the HD, it's not that rubbery texture like the older military grade one but rather actual glass-like surface that seems to increase the contrast and black point ever so slightly. It's pretty much invisible at the edge now that it's had about a week to dry out and grip to a lip completely. Also I paid that much because the folks at the kiosk would apply them for you since it's a wet process, and they do an excellent job (or they re-do it, plus if the screen gets F**ked up down the road, they replace it for me).
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=390604167052 just saw this on eBay and I'm going to order one since its only $5 . has anyone bought one before ? Doesn't look too cheap... And I have a screen protector on so it should essentially be an otter box .

I hope I'm wrong but I think this will add bulk to the phone which might be an issue for some if not most cases/bumpers, specially if you are already using a front glass protector. Again I really hope that I'm wrong and look forward to seeing any pictures/video reviews of the item from the community.

"bulk" ? It's .5mm!
After having the front one from them which is .4mm I found that it adds a little (for lack of a better word) bulk to the phone. The cases/bumpers would normally have a nice lip around the phone so when you put the phone face down the screen would never touch the surface but with the front glass SP that nice space that the lip would create would be diminished because the cases/bumpers don't go on top of the glass SP but right next to it pushing against it, so in my head I'm thinking that having that in the back or having both in front and back would be a bad result. Maybe I'm not explaining myself right but it makes sense in my head :silly:
Has anyone received this yet?

Hey I did receive it a while ago. I had some complications with it. When I applied it to the back of my phone it made it look really weird... It looked kind of like there were air bubbles underneath and looked kind of smashed on the bottom. I removed it to see if I applied it again if it would look different. Same thing. I was a little disappointed about how it looked and took it off. The bottom where it appeared to be smashed wasn't actually smashed. It was part of the adhesive that was not sticking to the glass. The entire back of the protector is a thin layer of adhesive. I ended up peeling the adhesive off the screen protector. It was kind of like a double-sided, thin, sticky piece of rubber, if that makes sense... I'm sorry I don't have pictures. I love xgear products but this is the poorest experience that I've ever had from an xgear product (really the poorest experience I have ever had from any product i've bought for my n4) . I think maybe if the adhesive was only on the edges like it is on the screen protector it would have been better. I think the air bubble looking effect was from the adhesive sticking to the phone... I don't want my money back or a replacement if it was even possible. My phone was very very clean before I applied it, I understood fully what I was doing when applying it. It just wasn't a great product at all. I still love xgear though.
Edit: Oh and to answer the question about the official nexus 4 bumper, Yes it will work with this. Also, shipping was very quick.
Wow so sorry to read that you had such a poor experience with it. That sucks!
If at all possible, could you take a few pictures of the screen protecter and the adhesive that was bubbling up? Thanks!

Could be possible that it was a bad batch?
Hopefully someone will upload some photos soon!
I thought the full clear no border tempered glass protectors had the same rule as the dry screen protectors. Namely that you get the bubbles out that you can and then the rest come out after 24-48 hours. If you look at the installation instructions on the clear protectors for other phones I believe that is correct.

How did you removed it?
SENT FROM MY RAGING NEXUS⁴ ?
I've already thrown it away. When I say it looks like air bubbles I mean something different. They weren't air bubbles at all. That's just the best way I could describe it. You can remove the protector by just prying it off from one of the edges..
I should have taken pictures but I was so disappointed I just threw it away. It was a really weird issue. If you have the money to spare try it out yourself. I love the idea of the protector but I won't be buying another one. I wouldn't even want one if it was free. I don't think it was defective... I think it was just the way it was made. And just to make it clear I'm not wanting to make the company look bad, I myself just wasn't satisfied with the product. I love xgear and the screen protector I bought from xgear that is on my phone right now.

Carbon fiber laminate replacement for rear glass

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share a recent modification done to my Nexus 4. Like many people my rear glass basically spontaneously cracked in a spiderweb pattern across the entire surface of the rear glass. Frustrated I looked and looked for a replacement back possibly made of plastic or some other material...anything but glass!
Unfortunately I could not find what I was after, so I ordered a Nexus 4 rear housing with glass. Once it arrived and installed everything was great except I was constantly worried about the glass shattering again. Now that I had the original back off I could experiment a bit. It took me quite a while to chip all the glass shards away. Using a heat gun softened the adhesive and made it a lot easier. Also the wireless charging coil gave extra frustration to the glass removal, as its flexible and quite fragile.
Eventually all the glass was removed. At first I was thinking of going with wood, but after working with a veneer of Brazilian rosewood I realized that the wood was so thin that it was going to be a real pain to work with to get a precision form.
I really like the look of carbon fiber so I searched and found a piece of carbon fiber laminate 1/32" thick (.030" when measured). It came 3" wide and 12" long. I rough cut the basic shape with a band saw and then sanded the edge down to a 2.445" width. I then used a fine hand file to create the arched corners and ends. Eventually I got the perfect shape and then used a carbide end mill to create the holes for camera, flash and speaker holes. I also used a bit larger end-mill to make an inset on the rear side of the camera hole to drop in a new lens protector so that it would end up flush and not interfere with the camera once I installed it.
Finally I used some really nice double sided 3M 468 MP adhesive to bond the new back to the housing.
I was curious about heat dispersion, so I ran the phone through a few stress tests with both the glass and the laminate and the laminate actually came back with a slightly cooler result. So basically without strict data collecting I'd say my concern about heat is null.
I was really pleased with the results and wanted to share. Photo's don't quite do it justice like seeing in person. As you shift the phone in light there is a very dynamic weaved pattern reflecting similar but more intensely that the original glass. It's not as scratch resistant as the original glass but that was not exactly impervious to scratches either. I'm happy knowing there is basically zero chance of shattering. believe me I tried on a scrap piece.
That looks really nice! Be aware that carbon fiber will block/attenuate some signals like WiFi.

Thanks!
Hmm, I'll do a comparison next to my coworkers Nexus and find out if there's a difference.
Edit: I was not able to notice any discernable difference in signal strength on WiFi or the cell radio in comparison. Basically identical to the non-modded Nexus in signal strength and speed tests. Bluetooth works as it should. I have not tested NFC yet but I will when I get the opportunity.

Really like what you've done with your nexus 4. Only thing is, when it broke in the first place, why didn't you just put a dbrand vinyl on the back? They look amazing, fit perfectly and it's not too expensive.

Thanks. I did put something similar over it but unfortunately there was a crack in the glass right above the camera lens and light would refract through causing photos to come out terrible. Having kids and a new baby just arriving, I can't live without those spontaneous photos when needed on the spot. Otherwise I would have left it with the skin.
Oh and the carbon fiber laminate was only $10.

Very cool!!! I like it a lot It would be even better to write "nexus" on the rear in the carbon, but i think it could cost a lot.
Where did you get the carbon fiber laminate?

If you plan to keep the phone a while, or resell it, keep the carbon fiber out of the sunlight. Unless they put some sort of UV protection on it? It will fade otherwise.
Looks great though. I have always been a fan of CF. I def give you a +10 for the project.

Thanks. It won't be spending much time in direct sunlight, but I think I'll do a test with a scrap piece and leave it outside and see how it holds up.

I think you should make more and sell just the carbon fiber part.

If I had access to a water jet cutter I would definitely do that. Doing it manually by hand takes a lot of time and would drive the cost up more than I think people would be willing to spend.

I get a hard on every time I see carbon fiber Is there a glossy coat over it or is it just the CF so that you can feel the texture? I am quite curious to see the radio reception test results. If they turn out to be minor, please let me know how much you would charge to make one for me. If only I had such skills

No, just no! Real CF shall not be replaced with vinyls. NEVER!!!

Haha, I just said vinyl because it would be cheaper and less time consuming than doing the whole replacement thing, but the real CF does look really nice

Generally in a carbon fiber laminate the weave is sandwiched between layers of epoxy to hold its form. This provides a smooth semi-glossy surface which also adds to the optical effect of the light bending as your viewing angle changes. There is a very, very subtle texture to it but its mostly smooth in characteristic.
So far I have not noticed a difference in radio reception, I will continue testing. If I had a second nexus with me it would be easy. There are so many environmental factors that make it nearly impossible to compare any current results with the previous glass back.

Yeah I know about the epoxy. I have had car parts molded out of CF. However, some case manufacturers provide an extra glossy layer over the finished product (which I am not a big fan of). But it seems its not the case here.
I am wondering what would happen if the laminate were to be glued to the glass directly. Any ideas?

Definitely possible. It would just thicken the phone by about 1/32" which would probably make it a little less than even with the official bumper edge. I would bevel the outer edge in that case so it smooths out with the edge of the phone. I used a rubber based back like this at first with a nice grip to it. It worked great. The only issue i had was was a crack over my camera lens so the glass ultimately needed to be removed.
They make a special epoxy glue specifically for this but the double sided adhesive I used works great. Its more of a gummy adhesive than a tape so it conforms a bit and has great yield strength.

I'm impressed, looks very clean. Makes more sense than spending money on another glass back.
