I tried rooting my phone, but when I flashed CWM my Nexus S stopped booting... it freezes on the Google screen in the intro. I can boot into Fastboot, and cwm, but I cant connect the Internal memory to the computer without it booting like it is supposed to. Does anybody know of anything I can do to fix my phone and bring it back to stock??
There are guides for returning to stock stickied in the Nexus S 4G Android Development forum.
Before you do that though, try flashing a different recovery, like the one linked to here or here.
Btw, which guide did you use? You're not the first person to have this problem, and it's really bugging me (though probably not as much as it's bugging you :-o).
Maximilian Mary: I tried to post the link, but since I'm a new member I have to wait 8 posts before I can post a URL.... :/
I will try a different recovery, but how would I flash a rom if I can connect my phone via usb mount?

I'm a little out of my depth here, but I think it's
fastboot flash system system.img.
You don't need to put the rom image on the sdcard. Just put it in the same folder as fastboot.
It was titled "How to Root Nexus S!"
And I will try to flash recovery and try that rom command, thank you )

There's a button for that.
I got the link. Thanks. I looks like you flashed a boot image that is incompatible with your phone. That guide was for the T-Mobile Nexus S. (Why they're screwing with the boot.img to begin with, I really don't understand.)
Download the attached file, and unzip it to the same folder as fastboot. The md5 sum is d4a9508f9321eb25df3383f00f571e8b. Then
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You'll probably also want to use one of the recoveries listed above to
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
, but leave system alone for now. Flash that only as a last resort.

OMG!! im having the same issue. could you please post the link for ODIN so i can return to stock and take it from there please? I rely on my phone so much and i need it asap thank you.
same problem with me.
but in my case, the phone not only freeze after the google logo before boot. I tried several times to pull the battery and start the phone again, it took several times until the phone can boot normally again.
After that, my nexus s can work as usual. but it only takes 3-4 hour until it freeze/hangs or reboot automatically and show image of green robot lay down with red alert triangle...
sometimes I noticed all application force closed like gmail, gtalk, etc. (its a basic apps instead of 3rd party app)
History :
- root GB 2.37 using superoneclick
- upgrade OTA to ICS 4.04
- problem happens
- root using guide : nexusshacks.com
- unroot using guide : nexusshacks.com
- back to factory setting on GB 2.34
- upgrade OTA to ICS 4.04
- Still got that problem.....
I'm using Nexus S 4G Sprint, pls help me guys...
nexus s won't boot
I had the same problem and read elsewhere that heating the phone with a hairdryer solves the problem.
I must say, indeed it did.
I removed the battery and the SIM card, then heated up the phone (so it really feels warm) put back the battery and sim and simsalebim the phone started again. and is still working since (now already a few day's)
It seems that a component in the phone is heat sensitive, the question in my mind is when will this show again and do I need to consider buying a new phone.
But sofar it works
PS I also tried hard reset factory reset the lot, but in the end only heating up helped.
Good luck, David
I fixed this problem! but I had to wipe all user data by rooting it using nexusrootICS. It finally boots up and the phone works now... that's all I need.
Got a bit of a problem.... I flashed a ROM onto my phone (forgot to back up, that's my big issue) It said it flashed just fine. Went to start up, just ran the lg logo for about 30 mins. Decided to try re-flashing it. Made sure to wipe everything. Nothing, still have the same issue. Tried to get back into CWM, but its gone now. Tried doing emergency download software, now its stuck on the screen "Download is in progress, do not disconnect cable." Im stuck. I dont know what else to do. I've tried the LG Support Tool, but it says to use Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant, which I can't get because I can't find a download for it and I cant get it from my phone.
I have the stock ROM image, but I have no clue how to install it without CWM or something. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I needs my phone...

they said to use Upgrade Assistant that means you never told them about the truth: phone is not booting....big mistake or let me understand that:Upgrade Assistant works when your phone is in download mode ?!
what is that rom you tried to flash surely was for your phone ?
also you have stock rom this is a .zip file or what format?
can you enter fastboot mode ?

Um... Let's see... The LG Support Tool which in most cases you can use to return your phone to stock comes up with a message saying "Upgrade tool is preinstalled in your phone. Please allow to install "Verizon Wireless Software Upgrade Assistant" when the phone is being connected to the PC". That's what the tool tells me.
The ROM I tried to flash was BrokenOutConnect v1.0. Its for the LG Connect, which is almost the same phone, and some one said it would be ok to flash it.
The stock ROM is in an .img file, so I need to figure out how to install from that
And I have no idea how to enter fast boot (unless your referring to the vol up+down + pwr, in which case, that doesn't work.
Sorry, can't post the original page for the ROM, I'm too new lol

I think was a bad idea to flash that rom because is not exactly made for your phone one can damage a phone in this way never do like that !
about your stock rom...maybe this is a backup made by stock recovery ? do you have a recovery.img file in that update ? there is a single img file in that stock rom or more files ?

No I do not... I actually just found that stock image on another forum. File is called LG_Lucid_VS840_4g_system.img . I realize that was a horrible idea... Google kinda led me astray on that one lol. here is the link to your phone check if this is really your phone also download usb drivers and software to update it from LG site
install USB drivers then download and run LG Mobile Support Tool this will connect to LG site download files and finally will request to connect phone to PC then will make update

What was the tool?
My vs840 won't allow me to flash a recovery how did you do it?
So I accidentally wiped the internal Storage on my XT925 RAZR HD, before flashing because well I'm silly.
Now, I can boot into fastboot, and recovery, but I dont know how to get the phone into a state where I am able to use adb push to move the .zip with the new ROM onto my device so I can flash it with recovery,
have been searching for a while now but to no avail,
I dont expect a direct answer but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
Any and all help Appreciated!

Thats the thing I've tried flashing back to stock but it encounters an error and fails out , so that option unfortunately is out, I think I may just have to go buy a MicroSD card tomorrow and copy the new ROM that way
I used this toolkit to flash fw on my xt925 and it worked flawless in fastboot if you can get the rom on the pc etc, its worth a shot

I have a rooted StraightTalk SCH-S968C Samsung Galaxy S III (with the stock AOSP ROM) that I just screwed up. I had used EZ-Recovery to flash TWRP 2.2.0 to the phone. Now TWRP says there is no OS! I can only boot into TWRP - nothing else. It won't even let me power-down the phone. Is there some way I can recover from this, or do I now have a very expensive electronic brick (that runs TWRP)? I have adb installed on my laptop and I know it works, so that's one possible route to recovery. Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty sure it's possible to return it completely to stock with the COMBINATION_S968CUDUAMH1_S968CTFNAMH1_1304014_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5 file through Odin. I just to happen to have the file right here.. small warning though, it's 1.2 gigs.

That's the file I am offering to host on my Website, since nobody seems to be able to download it from Dropbox. I'm having trouble downloading it from Mega... Since the file is over 1 GB, Mega insisted I needed to download their extension, but it's not compatible with Firefox 22. I tried Chrome, and Mega says that Chrome on my laptop is "a bit outdated"... sheesh! I'll try and update it.
(added later) - I found a Dropbox link for the file and it's downloading now.
If you want to FTP the file to my Website, let me know by PM and I'll give you the username and password.
I tried using fastboot to install CWM Recovery, but fastboot is eternally "waiting for device" even though it's there (adb can see it).
Aug. 7 - Got the file I needed, but didn't use it since Windows7 would not recognize the phone even after I installed the drivers. (I think it was an issue with automatic updates being disabled...) In the meantime... I tried the button-combo for the bootloader (which I swore I tried the day before and it didn't work), and the phone booted into the bootloader! From there, I pressed "Volume down" to cancel & reboot the phone, and it went into the stock system - it was all still there! First thing I did was immediately use EZ-Recovery to flash CWM 5.8.4.5. - Issue resolved!
Deleted.

Finally found it here

I have my old Nvidia shield tablet and i have WiFi off and powered off.
I've been reading you can stop the kill switch from i guess changing the boot loader or operating system?
I new to this stuff.
Could someone just give me some directions on how to go threw this process please.
I don't know if it's to late cause i have the most recent update? but like i said it's turned off and WiFi is off and i heard that the kill switch is sent over the internet to your device and you don't have to confirm it.
So i hope my system is safe until i can do what ever you guys advise me to do.
Thank you...
treat your old tablet before connecting the new one to internet
Hello. You have to delete a folder (/system/apps/TegraOTA if you are on last firmware, with OTA 3.1) but to do this, you need root as folders in /system are not visible for the normal (unrooted) user. Or you flash a custom firmware, and flash nomoreOTA.zip that you'll find in the same forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/kill-kill-switch-shield-tablet-xx-t3179489
Be sure to act before you use your new tablet, and ideally do the same to the new one before connecting it to internet. Then the kill switch maybe will not even be sent to you/your old tablet.
:fingers-crossed:
edit : do a search here for 'root shield tablet lollipop' if you need info to get root or flash custom recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...t-root-nvidia-shield-tablet-lollipop-t2972316
Note also that if you choose to (and succeed to) flash another (custom) ROM, such as Blisspop, you'll be safe as those custom roms avoid the kill switch (no /system/apps/TegraOTA folder in them)
If your new tablet is never activated then in theory the killswitch should never be sent out. So as far as I can see flashing a custom rom on the new device before letting it boot into android or connect to the internet should prevent device from showing as having been activated.
Also blocking Nvidia's OTA servers on the network level (you'll need custom firmware on your router) should do the trick as well.
Block all of these:
Code:
23.32.163.186
e886.g.akamaiedge.net
ota.nvidia.com.edgekey.net
ota.nvidia.com
Also it might be worth looking into whether flashing nomoreOTA.zip on the new tablet works to the same effect.
I used my new tablet and the both were working for the day, both have no problems so far.
I've been reading that they are sending out kill switches in 4 segments, by using the last 2 digits of the serial numbers system.
So mine hasn't gone threw yet i don't think.
So i need to root it?
Then delete the OTA file?
Then flash a custom firmware?
Thanks guys...
Just root it, do a full wipe=factory reset in TWRP and flash a custom Rom like Bliss and you will be OK.

Just for info, I found out today that, even if my new tablet was also flashed with nomoreOTA.zip, and even if I did it before there was any internet connexion from it, my old tablet is now flagged and an urgent OTA (in fact the kill switch) is waiting to be sent to it. Of course it still works, thanks to nomoreOTA.zip. But Nvidia did flag the old tablet after 10 days use of the new one (maybe they check serial numbers of tablets connected to grid or to another Nvidia server). Both my old and my new tablets are still working.

I see lots of root programs, is there a best one?
Can you flash with TWRP?
And someone said all i have to do is...
"Full Process
1) Unlock Bootloader.
2) Flash TWRP Recovery.
3) Get the no more OTA.zip from XDA and flash it via TWRP
4) Check if the update option is removed from Settings, if not flash it again.
Done! "
Is that ok also?
Thank you...

No, but you do need an unlocked bootloader to fastboot flash anything.

Yeah, that the conclusion i reached.
Flash done, now runing bliss pop. First start got me loads of errors. I went until i realized i had forgotten to wipe. It's been a while since i last played with custom roms.

Well, that's disappointing

Ok i followed the http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...t-root-nvidia-shield-tablet-lollipop-t2972316
I got to "On the tablet, select "recovery reboot"
But i didn't see it so i selected reboot, i rebooted and was on stock i think?
1) I can see that a few more steps and i'm rooted.
But i'm nervous to try this again from that point.
Should i just start at unlocking the boot loader?
2) Is rooting the device permanently unlocking the boot loader?
3) can i just no OTA from unlocking the boot loader part?
Ok i got to side loader and in the command it says error can't find device and there's an android guy on his back with a red statement mark.
So I'm in developer USB.
I have unlocked the boot loader
I'm flashing the recovery
And i get to restart in recovery.
Then i get the menus to side load the supersu.zip
I renamed it with out caps, i even made a folder in C:\Program Files\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
Cause it installed at C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
just to avoid the (x86)
when i try and leave the menu to reset it asked me to root, but i had the error so don't want to brick it if rooting with an error on side loading supersu.zip
What do i do?
Thank you...
says
loading: 'supersu.zip'
error: device '(null)' not found
And no android guy on his back this time.
A hat with a refresh orange symbol.

You have unlocked bootloder and installed cwm recovery so yay! Download the SuperSU file on your tablet. Make sure you know where it downloaded to. Boot your tablet o to fastboot menu using the power/vol down. Select recovery mode using volume then power to select. Chose install zip then from sdcard (not the sdcard1) chose 0/ then search for where you put SuperSU and select it. Install. Then navigate to reboot. If asked to fix root pick yes

You don't need a card the sdcard referee to is your internal memory on your tablet. Not sure why ADB isn't working but I had a similar issue with cwm once.

Did you go back and flash the nomoreOTA zip? That is the most important part!

Ok i just flashed nomoreOTA.zip.
It said the file was deleted and was a success.
I guess i can use the internet now?
I'm so nervous to turn the internet on and have the thing reset...
Did i need to run supersu to keep it rooted or always rooted until i use supersu to full unroot.
Thank you...
