Cybook odyssey - General Questions and Answers

Hey there!
I have too few posts, so have to post here instead of the right forums
So. I'm getting some Raspberry Pi's, going to set up a small private cloud.
Part of this cloud is going to be an e-paper reader.
I've got a Cybook Odyssey (in Sweden marketed as a Letto. So I'm of course hoping to get into it, and hopefully get Debian (or maybe Raspbian) running on it, seems like the easiest way to get it to communicate with my other raspberries.
Anyone got tips on how to get this up and running?

[Q] Networking Project for Xoom

Hi everyone this is my first post and I will get right to it. I taking a networking class and we are supposed to do a final project and I really wanted to incorporate my new Motorola Xoom (which I love by the way) into the project but I am stuck on ideas and i was wondering if anyone else had anything to get me going. My classmates are implementing OpenVPN, IPSec, and a Mesh Network and I really wanted something original so any help to keep my brain thinking would be great
How about a voip server and you can use your xoom as a voip client?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Running Ubuntu on the Xoom opens the door to plenty of ideas. Dhcp server, webserver or better yet a domain controller. You could demonstrate by adding a laptop to your domain running from the Xoom.

these ideas are great thanks i will look into both!
If you really wanted to be evil get the Aircrack-ng package working with the Xoom and demonstrate packet capturing and analysis using a tablet. I think the Xoom uses a broadcom wifi chip so the possibility is there.
I would love to do aircrack -ng I looked into it a little already, and the project is unfortunately due at the end of the month :-( so I am looking for something a little smaller scale but hopefully that can be something to start on the side afterwards.

This would be SWEET.

VPN

Hey all, trying to find a way to connect to Cisco vpn, and I have run into a question. Are there any kernels for the Mez with a TUN device in the kernel? (TUN device in kernel (CONFIG_TUN=y)) or is this even possible with this phone?
This one is a little beyond my understanding, so I figured I would toss it out there and see if you guys can help.
Just FYI From what I've read, vpn is androids biggest downfall as it does not play well with Cisco, there are outstanding bug reports from very early stages of android that Google hasn't been able to fix for years now.

Yeah I use to have VyprVPN and it wouldn't work either.

Thats great! I thinked to compile apache, php and mysql... and other needed libs for android but was lazy ... I cross compiled these things for ppc sucesfully for my satelite receiver Dreambox DM600 2 years ago and had smf forum runing inside... .. maybe I will make one "pack" for native android later... thats good thing having web server under android !
This is really cool!

Interesting idea. Although I haven't clue why I would need this...
Good job cooking it up though!

Any idea when the link will be fixed? I have an old Aria that I'd love to try out this server ROM with.
Thanks!

Does it still require a functional Sim card to work?

I don't own an Aria (yet.... getting a refurb one soon just to add to the collection and play with using tools like this one), but from what I read about the items added to this rom, it's exactly what the title of the post says. It's a server.
Imagine taking the time to setup a separate box running Ubuntu or Red Hat or something to use as your own private linux server. Now skip all that and just install this rom. Bam, your phone that may have been sitting around collecting dust can now provide the same thing (albeit probably much slower).
A fully functioning apache web server, perfect for poking around with and learning the ins and outs of linux servers. Point your router to it, open port 80 and there you go. Serviing out web pages from your own little corner of the internet.
Hopefully I get time, I'd like to try this out. Any comments from anyone who's used this? I have an old HTC G2 (desire z) sitting around. I cleaned it up, rooted, and installed cyanogenmod on it. I've been playing around with an IP cam app and a couple FTS server apps.
One of my main concerns was powering the device. It gets super warm after prolonged usage, and I don't know how long the battery would handle 24/7 charging, or if it should even be a concern at all. To bad the phone wont power on while plugged in with the battery removed, like laptops.
I have an old Aria that I use as an MP3 player. Would this work for that? (using Google Play Music)
As all you guys might see, this one is quite old. Also, the download link is dead for a long time now, I think the best would be to get this thread closed.

[Q] Extra S2 skyrocket. Uses?

I upgraded to the S3 a month or so back so I have a 4 month old S2 that I'm looking for uses for. I have nobody to give it to and don't really need/want to sell it yet, so I've been researching non phone uses for it. Maybe a streaming cam for home security, a media pc (with external storage of course), something along those lines. Any ideas?
One use: you can use it to test out roms and kernels without fear of damaging your only phone. I'm sure it'd help a dev out if they knew that their rom caused issues, and you have a phone to fall back on.
I'd be doing the same but AT&T bought my SR.
Stock ICS on my S3
Make a cell-bot!! ... I'm into robot things.. so it interests me. Then you could use the cell-bot for the home security. (recording.. and put a tazer on it) or make one of these YouTube Link but with the skyrocket interfaced somehow..
I would do it.. but just don't have the time.. I have a first gen Nao robot (from my university) that I code on. Mainly python or C++. Takes too much time lol
Sly's use is a good one too.. could always use people that aren't afraid to load up a fresh build and report non-bias info.
I assume that it will no longer have a sim card so, wifi only. I'm a little strange, I use my SR for about everything but a phone. I do use mine as somewhat of a HTPC at home. I have it on the nightstand connected to tv which has a small surround sound system. From there I use it for: clock, online streaming (hulu+, netflix, youtube, tedtv...etc.) music and movie streaming from main HTPC, downloading music and movies (faster than my home pc on same wifi). I also use Splashtop which controls main HTPC giving me all the functions of my computer.(tv tuner card and recordings web browsing, documents, printer) remotely with video and sound, So simple explaination: It's my Tv, stereo, clock, htpc for my bedroom. Although I have an MK802 that works pretty well, I'm getting the MK802 iii in a few weeks which will do all of this and be remotely controlled from my phone. Oh yeah I use it as a pc remote control also. These are just the home uses.
But, you could also donate it to a good charity. The "davietr" charity foundation. LOL!
Attach it to a rocket and make it skyrocket!

I'd LOVE to make some kind of surveillance bot (think rover, tank bot thing) but although I'm in a very experenced in building eletronic things my coding skills are lacking.

Give it to Adam Outler so he can figure out an Unbrickable Mod for this phone. It would serve the community in a huge way.

This crossed my mind as well, I was going to make a quad-rotor using the s2 as the I/O controller. It has the perfect setup, all the sensors minus a ground proxsinity sensor. Wiring it all up is no problem, the problem lays in my lack or programming knowledge.
I knew I had seen that one in the video somewhere... but couldn't understand what he was saying
http://www.brookstone.com/rover-remote-control-spy-tank-for-ipad
If I had my hands on that one I would tear it apart and put an Arduino in it (personal preference for building bots -- and simple to use)
Wish I knew more about interfacing a phone with this type of hardware application.
I know the cell-bots website has *some* info..

Ive read up on Arduino some time back, looks like lots of people were thinking along the same lines as I. First thing i'd do with that thing is replace the cam with a better one, maybe a servo to enable some movement of the cam, also pull out those motors and put in some brush less higher torque ones. I'd be willing to buy one of those bots (pending some research) and modding it with the s2 as an on-board interface if anybody has any knowledge of programming. I think it would be a good project for the community.
I need a new SR.....digitizer broke on mines... haha

I do have mine as my backtrack Linux desktop computer.
And as my netflix viewer.
This was with my CM9 setup, since moving to CM10 a couple of weeks ago, haven't tried any of that yet.

TeXPortal - The TeX Experience

Since I bought my tablet in October I have been looking for an easy way to actually use TeX on my tablet, and I have finally found it. I present to you, TeXPortal! (note: I have nothing to do with the development of this app, I simply discovered it today)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lah.texportal
It's still in an early stage, but it is working great for me. It takes a little time to set up, but nothing major. It only works on Android 4.0+ and devices with ARMv7. Besides that... I'll let the app speak for itself, should you choose to use it.
I can finally say goodbye to my laptop for good.
Awesome. I haven't looked into it recently, looks a while back and never found anything worth having. This is going ot help this Comp Sci / Math grad
Thanks!
Nice. Will be interesting to see how its interface compares with VerbTeX. Also wish ShareLaTeX would make an android app and Google Drive integration - their website cloud TeX service is fantastic.
