Flashing Roms doesnt affect your sd card partions but the apps and data in the 2nd partion which is the ext partion should be wiped using wipe data from your recovery (this will be mentioned in the flashing instructions of the rom anyway). And now the kernels, it is not necessary to flash another kernel if you are good with the current one, but if you plan to replace it in future with some other kernel then flash the stock firmware first then root then flash kernel then the custom rom as changing kernels from custom roms sometimes removes superuser access. I hope you are all clear now and anyway, a suggestion..using swap will burn your sd due to frequent read and write cycles.
Thanks! a little more please...

Thanks a lot for your reply... The techno duos rom is pre rooted... And it is written in instructions that I hav to flash kernel after booting into the new rom... I am.currently on iDuos kernel for using Swapper... But now as u say... i am going to revert to stock one.... So i will now first deactivate swapper.... then flash stock kernel by cwm... then flash techno duos rom... then TD kernel... is it right???

Well.. I would recommend to flash stock firmware then custom kernel then custom rom as 'pre rooted' just means that it got SU app amd its binaries pre installed but the root access really counts on the kernel. Unless the kernel is pre rooted, its better to play safe by flashing custom ketnel before the Rom which will save you from flashing everything again if SU doesn work.

Well.. Its literally not possible..or its too difficult as .zip files cannot be found. Odin is like the Ultimate thing.. you will know what I mean as you go tweaking your device. Well.. its not hard to know about Odin and how it works.. Check the link and well if you want then search and download rom for your region.

Flash stock ROM again using ODIN by going to Download mode as said by xlm13x ...
Download the china stock ROM, it has all the three files the pda, modem and the csc. It also has the pit file. Flash on ODIN.
Once you do this your phone will definately boot up. Once this is done you can flash any country stock rom through ODIN.
It also happened to me once and the thing i just mentioned worked for me. So 100% sure on this.

The kernel version you quoted contains 'XWKI5' which is the code for Indian stock firmware.
For using Neo ROM you'll have to flash the XWLA (European stock firmware) on your Galaxy R & then flash the Neo ROM 3.0. And yes you can flash the stock firmware of any region it'll be compatible & won't create issues as long as you're flashing stock ROMs by Samsung for Galaxy R.
Do update here on how it goes.
Hope this helps

Yes you can reflash our Indian stock 2.3 5 ROM anytime you want, reset your custom firmware counter & claim warranty for your handset, be careful while doing the same cause if you screw up / miss some steps then you could loose your warranty.

Kernel v 1.8.3 is compatible with XWLA4 / XWKI5 (There could be some bugs with XWKI5 but there's no harm in trying as long as you follow the steps) can also be used with Neo ROM.
Try the newer version of his kernel here, it has been improved a lot since then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787454
Before you start flashing any ROMs & kernels I would suggest you to read all the threads stickied in the Dev section, FAQ's & How To's in my signature below, if you haven't already done it & don't forget to take a nandroid backup.
It is to understand the various steps you need tu know to go about flashing kernels, ROMs, etc & also how to clear the counter to claim warranty.
Cheers !

Yes for Neo ROM, u have to flash Stock rom of XWLA4 via odin.It will not affect anything but u need to wipe data after flashing. So take a backup of all ur data and then flash it. Apart, it wont affect anything buddy. Yes u can revert back to Indian stock rom at any point of time.
And with kernel, Neo ROM by default has ardatdat kernel 1.8.1 and so u will get that kernel when u flash Neo ROM. After that u can flash ardatdat's kernel 1.8.3 as it has RAM hack and its better than its prev versions. Yes u can upgrade, better to say u can change the kernel at any point of time. Have a Happy Flashing.

Hello,
I'm new to rooting/modding/roms, and I wanna install the awesome Ultimate HD rom on my locked, unrooted Xperia Arc LT15i:
Gingerbread
Android Version: 2.3.4
Build: 4.0.2
I don't know where to start.
The page of the Ultimate HD rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920207) says:
- For Unlocked Bootloaders: Flash the Recomnend Kernels; Adv. Stock Kernel
- For Locked Bootloaders: Root your phone using this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683957
I don't think I gotta start with this page ^
I wanna unlock the bootloader, that's step 1 I think (via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034087)
But what's the best way to root and make my Arc ready to install the Ultimate HD rom?
I saw some pages like this about rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874801
But I don't know which one is good and which Kernel I gotta use to go from:
Xperia Arc unrooted 2.3.4, 4.0.2
to
rooted, unlocked with the Adv. Stock kernel Ultimate HD rom.
Do I have to install the official ICS update first on my Arc?
first off all you got to unlock the boot loader
follow instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794800
generally when you unlock the boot loader and install a custom rom, it comes with root so rooting is not required.
when your done reply back to me
Thanks for the info. I was going to unlock the bootloader via the link, but I was wondering:
If I unlock the bootloader, will it delete all my SD data/format SD? I really don't want to lose my SD data

sorry but when you unlock the bootloader, the sd card must be wiped not matter how you do it.
You can take out the sd card when you unlock the bootloader, that might work.

I just unlocked my Arc bootloader without the sd card and it worked!
Now I'm wondering what the next step is before I can install the Ultimate rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920207)
Is it possible to go straight from unlocked Gingerbread to an ICS based rom? Can I now just put the rom zip on my sd and install via CWM?
Or do I need to do something with a Kernel or something first?

nope you need a ics based kernel, usually the rom includes the kernel, but not always, I don't have an arc so I can't recommend what kernel you should use. Anyway, it seems that there is kernel included. You will need this flash tool if you don't have it already
http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1359317663000
here are the instructions
click the lightning icon,
plug in you device into fastboot mode
click fastboot mode and okay
click select kernel to flash
choose you img file
and reboot
some points to remember.
flashing will wipe your all your app data but won't touch any pictures or movie files; always make a nandriod backup
remember to wipe data/ factory reset before flashing
wiping cache and davik cache won't hurt either
click thanks if helped

yes you can flash any kernel even if your rom is not compatible with it, you just won't be able to boot up if you have a ics kernel and a gingerbread rom, however you will just need to flash the ics rom to get it working.
oh and remember that many kernels require you to flash modules in order to get things like wifi

nope the cwm (or twrp) is part of the kernel so doing a factory reset will not delete it.

Appreciate. So I now will backup and wipe everything and then update it with kies mini. And then will ask more about custom stuff, am I doing right?
The problem about SGS4G is that it is WAY TOO MUCH information about it as well as kernels, mods, articles and you are lost because some of them conflicts with other.
P.S. I spent a week for going into Android stuff and Galaxy S.

The guide seems good enough but a bit more complicated that it should be. Anyway here are two tips or info for you. First, whatever you do, have Odin and Stock Firmware ready to flash coz when everything else fails, Odin to the rescue and also flash stock firmware (Rom+kernel) whenever you change kernel as changing kernels without doing so removes root access and you cant apply root update on a custom kernel unless it has pre root access. Second, you dont need any kind of manager to flash firmwares and updates. CWM is a replacement to all. But its all your choice.
DEVICE : SAMSUNG GALAXY FIT GT S5670
CURRENT ROM : GB 2.3.6 STOCK
I rooted my device a long time ago..but flashed the recovery few days ago only.
So here's what happened?
i flashed "AMON-RA RECOVERY"..then found it to be old.
then tried to flash the "TJ-STYLE RECOVERY" ...BUT SOMEHOW IT DIDN'T WORKED and ODIN was taking very much time.
so aborted and then flashed "PRATYUSH.CREED 'S RECOVERY"... as mentioned in the guide in the forum that this could backup the STOCK ROM.
THEN as mentioned in the guide i took a NANDROID BACKUP of the stock rom ...(didn't knew the backup was successful or not)..
after creating the backup i tried to flash OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 NIGHTLY.ZIP but the process ended very quickly notifying of successfull flashing...
instead when i rebooted after showing the sumsung animation the Device got hungup at a black screen with android written on it at a little right.
then i tried to restore the NANDROID BACKUP...but the recovery showed MD5 ERROR..
I thought may be a unlocked BOOTLOADER is required ..i googled it but couldn't find the procedure...
i then downloaded and flashed a STOCK_GB_2.3.6.tar.md5 rom..
this worked BUT REPLACED THE CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY WITH STOCK RECOVERY
.
.
.
NOW THE QUESTIONS :
1.why wasn't the NANDROID BACKUP successful ?
2.why didn't the OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 worked ?
3.how can i unlock the BOOT LOADER if it is required for the CUSTOM ROMS ?
4.why the CUSTOM CLOCKWORK MOD got replaced by the STOCK RECOVERY on reflashing with stock rom ?
help me ...

THEN as mentioned in the guide i took a NANDROID BACKUP of the stock rom ...(didn't knew the backup was successful or not)..
after creating the backup i tried to flash OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 NIGHTLY.ZIP but the process ended very quickly notifying of successfull flashing...
instead when i rebooted after showing the sumsung animation the Device got hungup at a black screen with android written on it at a little right.
then i tried to restore the NANDROID BACKUP...but the recovery showed MD5 ERROR..

i m a complete noob, but i will try to help u as much as possible ...
i think, there was a prob with flashing of custom recovery,
i m also on custom recovery (dunno which one) i flashed it as flashable zip frm recovery {i think i installed tj style fr odin then flashed the present recovery }
Also, wen u flash stock rom, u need to root it again ..
nondroid problem? mayb due to recovery problem ..
bootloader thing? sorry i dont knw anything bootloader thing ...
If i were u, i will first install tj style recovery from odin(it roots ur phone too, so no need to root it first) then either use it(its said to b most stable recovery around) or flash another recovery as flashable zip frm the present recovery ...
(i will avoid using odin fr each nd every thing ...)
Hope this helps ^^

HOW WOULD I DO THAT..?
means the tj-style recovery i have is in TAR format...
should i UNcompress and recompress it in ZIP format... ?
AND WHAT POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES COULD BE FOR THE ODIN ?
1) Nandroid Backup works only for custom roms. For stock roms u can only take a backup but u cant restore (there's a recovery by pratyush.creed which does restore too but i didn't try so can't say)
2)Perhaps u didn't flash properly so it went into bootloop. Use CWM by TJ-style only and next time, wipe data, cache and dalvik cache and format /system just as a precautionary step before flashing custom rom.
3)Samsung Phones doesn't have locked bootloaders. So to flash a rom, u can do it easily
4) The stock rom u flash via ODIN contains stock recovery as well.
U cant flash recovery unless u have other custom recovery (well there is a flashable zip for CWM by tjstyle but i dont know whether it can be flashed via stock recovery). The only way u can do is through ODIN. Make sure ODIN is set properly and if u have windows 7, run it as administrator and better reinstall drivers.

.............THANK YOU
I have a Samsung Galaxy GT-i9003.It is a movistar variant.Current it is running firmware 2.3.6 I9003XXKPR.
I want to flash firmware I9003XXKPQ.
Can I flash it using Odin?.I wanted to ask wheter or not it will flash successfully because it is a variant. Please tell me.
thanks.
I think you can do it. But. There's a more recent firmware you can flash. DDLF2.
Take a look here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2329200
I just wanted to move from XXKPR to XXKPQ and then root it,install CWM Recovery and then install a custom ROM such as CM10
The only question I wanted to ask was that will XXKPQ flash with no problems because the mobile phone is a Movistar variant with some custom apps and also a bootlogo,
Thx.
I'm on cm 10 now, from DDLF2.
If you flash ddlf2 or kpq as you like, your movistar-custom apps will be wiped because these are no-brand firmwares, but you still will have your phone 100% functional.
Pay attention in flashing because you will lost ALL your internalsd data.
Consider to flash ddlf2 because is newer than kpq and even allows you to flash cm10, cm10.1, cm10.2.
Ok thanks a lot
You can flash cf-root ( bam kernel or amit bagaria kernel ) directly on xxkpr and you will have cwm recovery and you are able to flash cm10 or cm10.1, cm10.2. I did it and no problem at all.
Really??.well if thats the case then you have made my work a whole lot easier. Thanks
Is this the .tar I will flash :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351056
Thanks again.:good:
Yes you are right. Flash this file whithout decompress in odin on pda without repartition and you are officially rooted and having cwm recovery.
Just one suggestion: wipe data before flash Cyanogenmod and flash it from internal sdcard and inmediatly after booting the new rom do a nandroid backup in recovery( por si las moscas ).
Good luck.
