[Q] Proximity sensor question - General Questions and Answers

Hi, I am new here and this is my first post.
I bought a new android phone 2 days back and stumbled upon this app on play store - Smart Screnn On lite. What it does is it uses the proximity sensor on your phone as the power lock/unlock key.
My question is this app keeps running in background and is useful but does it keep the proximity sensor turned on always. Or proximity sensors are meant to kept on when the phone is on? I know P.S(proximity sensors) are used when someone calls to lock the screen up. But is the sensor ''On'' full time or when it's needed??
Thanks,

Technically, it has to stay on the whole time which costs much battery.

Never use your power button again. Flip case/pocket autolock.

In the market the APP called AUTOLOCK allows :
- Automatic screen off by proximity sensor : when I put my note in my pocket the screen goes off automatically.
- When the note is in landscape there's an option to disable the proximity sensor
With a flip case :
- The proximity sensor (like on the ipad2 smart cover) disables the screen when you close it.
- Wakes up the screen when you open it... but obviously this option will prevent the phone from entering deep sleep and drain battery life this is not confirmed yet, since I havn't monitored my battery life with this app yet.
- For cases with magnets theres an additional option to use the magnetic sensor instead of the proximity sensor
Add some cool factor to your phones ! The app is free (for the moment...)
If autolock doesnt work with your flip case you can try "Proximity Screen Off" which is a similar app but sadly it has no wake up option.
Or just increase the reading interval to 3 seconds.
To uninstall you must remove admin rights to the sensor first. In settings -> localisation --> admin rights.
Proximity sensor is just an IR LED, it doesnt drain much battery... Remember the oncall battery life with screen off sensor on of the note is like 9 hours non stop.

Managed to get it to lock ok by disabling the wake up setting, because when the flip case cover is all the way down it seems to wake the phone up again

try to clean cache in settings>>>applications>>>manage applications>>>find autolock app>>>clear data>>>and unistal....
if is not working download titanium backup....and delete this app

Dont use both apps at the same time or it will do a mess !
I tried that one too, for some reason the proximity sensor works when the case flap is a few mm from the screen, but when the flap is shut all the way the sensor doesn't register it, so tries to turn back on again.

i posted about this a few weeks ago. Dint seem to gather much attention.
The flip case does not work if it touches the screen. It has to be a few mm away.

I had to let go of the auto lock, the sensor doesn't work half the time. I was using proximity lock app, do you guys think it has something to do with the app? Or the very idea of locking with proximity is a flawed one?
works like a charm

No need to notice it, it was stated in the first post that it doesn't go into deep sleep preventing battery saving power modes.

He meant 'Wakes up' mode. He did not specifically mention for 'Closing' mode. That is why I said 'service is running'

[APP] Smart Screen Off 2.3

[UPDATE]
Hi guys, after my account was banned from Play Store, I decided to move all apps on Amazon App Shop for free. :good:
Here you can download last version of Smart Screen OFF PRO.
Smart Screen OFF PRO
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014TKA9VQ
I'll add other apps I developed in the next few weeks.
Download Smart screen off PRO User Guide
DESCRIPTION
Smart Screen Off it's a simple and light app which uses the Proximity Sensor built in your Android smartphone to turn the screen off and on automatically
REASON
I decided to code this app when I bought my Galaxy Nexus: this device doesn't have any physical button on the front screen. Being a quite huge phone, it's quite difficult to press the "turn off" button every time I wanted to turn it off and on. So I needed a way to turn the screen off every time I put it into the pockets and off when removed.
HOW IT WORKS
The app itself is a toggle button, to switch it on just press the App Icon. Then every time you put the phone into your pockets the screen turns off.
If you put the smartphone upside down on the table, the screen turns automatically off.
NOTE: It doesn't lock the screen (just like in a call)
REQUIREMENTS
In order to use Smart Screen Off, you need to have a phone with Proximity Sensor (nowadays every smartphone incorporates one).
Nice APP
Even though I don't need this app...(I prefer manually clicking),
it seems really useful for whom use flip cases.
Such as "planner styled" Galaxy Note
Just installed and it does what it promises. Will be useful for me when at the gym I want to skip songs, I won´t have to unlock the phone a hundred times. Obviously the proximity sensor will be working all the time, did you notice a significant battery drain?. And the app name in the spanish version of the market is badly translated. It says "Fuera de pantalla inteligente" where it should say "Apagado de pantalla inteligente".
This is like screebl?
Good app, great idea. I think you should not only use proximity sensor, but things like orientation. I probably wont use this just because it doesn't seem too useful... I sometimes have my hand on top of my phone (near the sensor) and a finger movement can just keep making it blink on and off etc. Use orientation with this, it'd be better.
GREAT APP!
Works flawlessly, thanks alot.
Just installed V1.1 free from the market and it's a bit too sensitive! I hold my phone in my right hand and when I curl my hand over to touch or make gestures on the screen, the display turns off. Is there any way to adjust the sensitivity? I'm running on a Galaxy Nexus running GummyNex 0.7.6 based on AOSP 4.0.3.
UI is useless for lite so remove it, and as long as it has a notification in status bar i will not use this app, can i get v1 back!
2/5 stars
also in v1.2 there is NO way to turn it off :/

Nice application.
possible to make it work on galaxy tab? it doesnt have a proximity sensor but i believe it has a light sensor and magnatron. maybe make it detect a strong magnetic source to turn it on or off?
Night mode?

Proximity Screen Off never worked properly for me on the HD2 with several different versions of Android (both Honeycomb and ICS). It was quite prone to locking up my phone with the display off and locked.
Can you not trigger it to go to deep sleep. Screen should lock, that would be more appropriate imo.
If u turn off the display only, will deep sleep work?
EDIT:Saw the post up^^

Disable Proximity Sensor?

Is there any way to disable the screen automatically turning off during a call (across ROMs), or completely disable the proximity sensor at a system level?
I cracked my phone screen directly over the sensor and it's interfering with my ability to use the keypad during calls.
Thank you!

It would probably be easier to get an app that switches the screen timeout to never when using a particular app. Just do a search in the Play store for "keep screen on". I use an app like "tasker" for other things, but I also use it to keep my screen on when using the dialer.

May be ps is always on becouse many systems app uses this ps for one or another thing.
But the app smart screen on will suarly use this and drain the battery.

[Q] Nexus 5 proximity sensor always active / on

Hi all,
I've had this issue for about 2 weeks or so. The proximity sensor on my Nexus 5 randomly stays active no matter what app is on or if the screen is locked. So whenever the screen is active and I put my hand/finger near the proximity sensor it will blank the screen. You can see how this would be annoying when you're just checking notifications and the screen blanks out. Any thoughts or suggestions? It definitely seems software related as a reboot solves the issue until it happens again. I've tried to consistently recreate the issue, but I can't tie it to any one app that was/is active, or any combination of events that causes it. After a few hours when I unlock my phone to check a notification I notice it's active because the screen will go dark. Is there a way to see what app(s) could be doing this?
My phone is unlocked and rooted, but stock rom. No screen protector at all. I can't think of any non mainstream apps that I have installed.
Thanks!!
I have this issue exactly. Did you ever find the fix for it?
Are you using any app that uses the proximity sensor to turn on the screen? (e.g. Shake Screen-On). Those apps keep the proximity sensor on (if using near receiver mode).
One way to see if an app is using the proximity sensor is by checking the battery options. One of those apps might be the one draining your battery.
Same here. Reboot makes it work fine for a couple days, then the proximity sensor just stays active til the next reboot. Has done this on CM, PA, and Cataclysm.
