[Q] Android Full image backup ? - General Questions and Answers

Hi just wonder if i could do full image backup of my Galaxy s3 i9300 before trying new custom roms?
My s3 is rooted
Did full wipe and then tried many custom roms.
Choosed the best one in my opinion PARDUS 13Beta4 rROm for my needs.
Then spend all day setting my phone up - apps and accounts (got plenty different types.), wigets.
Now i want to try different ROM and dont want to spend all day setting my existing rom again in case if i dont like new rom.
I hv heard of many backup solutions but did not try any of them yet.. ( dont want to loose anything ,inc msgs.logs etc)
I know apps and conntacts are backed up to google account but :
is there any thing that could backup image of my phone.. so i can recover it exacly to the same state as it is now incl rom settings messages, state of folders on iphone internal memory etc. ..everything in one go! as for example windows image backup does.
Thanx

You can always use CWM and create a Nandroid backup of your phone. Titanium backup is another good choice and probably more inclusive than a Nandroid backup.

Backup everything before new room?

Hi!
Im looking for a software that will backup everything before I install a new room. I would like to save the settings etc.
cheers!
Ok there are a lot of options depending on the amount of time you want to spend either before or after upgrading (or both), this one SASHIMI http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538513 will do everything (well it sure looks like it anyway!) but seems very complicated to setup.
There is also SPB Backup & Sprite backup which I believe do a good job.
I haven't used any of these, I nearly used SASHIMI, but wasn't prepared to spend the time setting it up.
For me I use PIMBackup (search) which does a fairly good job for the time you put into it, I then backup other programs manually, for me that means Voice dialing, single file reg settings (make as I edited them to start with), plus then anything else I can think of.
You get out of the process what you put in, I decided I didn't want to spend ages preparing and would sort out reconfiguring my device manually after.
Backing up from one ROM and restoring onto another has the potential to cause you problems.
Some backup software (like Sprite) has different restore levels available depending on whether you're restoring to the same ROM, a different ROM or a different device, but I've never had much success with any of them.
The general recommendation appears to be a clean install from scratch, and use backups only for restoring to the same ROM in the event of an emergency.
SPB Backup
I had the same problem. I wanted to try another rom, but before I wanted to backup all personal settings and programs. Therefore I've dumped my ROM completely with Radio and then made a complete backup with SPB Backup.
After that I was able to flash other Roms and restore my own whenever I want.
Is there any such software thats is easy to use to backup the ROM before trying another. Got a T-Mobile Compact V but don't know where to get the stock ROM as a backup so I can flash some of the new ROM's avaliable.
For me pim backup does the job great. Quickly and easily saves contacts, messages, emails, appointments etc.

To backup your ROM (not the Radio unfortunately), you can use DumpMyPhone.
Then with the tool RebuildROM you can create a flashable version of your original ROM.
This is only to backup your ROM. It's not for your applications and not for the Radio or the SPL.

[Q] I have a couple of important questions

I'm new to this whole rooting thing and I just rooted my G2 last night because I wanted to do more, now I have a couple of questions.
1. How can I use a different ROM and bring all my current apps, data, contacts etc. to that rom?
2. Which folders are unnecessary on my phone?
3. Should I delete all the rooting materials after I'm finished?
I'm still using the stock OS with setcpu overclocked but I want to test a new ROM. Somehelp help me :/
I would first create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM using ClockWorkMod Recovery. Then I would download Titanium Backup (Pro) and create a backup of your USER apps/data only. It's not safe to try to restore system apps/data after flashing a different ROM. But user apps/data can be easily restored via TB after you flash your custom ROM. Contacts are synced up with Google, so you don't need to worry about them... they'll return as soon as you sign in with your Google account.
When you say folders on your phone, do you mean on your SD card? That's really up to you.
In terms of ROMs, I'm loving CyanogenMod v7.1.0. But ROMs are all personal preference. If you need more help with any of these things, there are awesome guides all over XDA. Good luck.

Definitely not on this one. If you happen to screw up your system and have to reinstall your ROM, you have it still on your SD card. ROMS generally only take up about 50-300MB on your card and if you have a large card, it shouldn't be an issue unless you download every ROM known to man.
But for some reason, every time I reboot PyroMod it bootloops me for what I don't know -____-
Im using TastyGinger on my G2.. Tried a few roms from eclair to gb and most of the time I need to reinstall my apps.. i tried using TB to bacup my apps.. but when i tried and restore after flashing new roms, tb gave me an error.. so i decided to hv this perception everytime i wanna flash a new rom, i must start from scratch..

1.Just back up all your current application and system data with titanium backup, then restore after u flash that rom. its doesnt matter how many time u change rom coz data that u backup in -titanium backup folder- untouch. for contact i recommend u save to google. 3.its up to you man.
Thanks man, I'll be sure to avoid that

[Q] How to save data before ROM upgrade

Hey guys,
so, I have already flashed my ROM from stock to something else. That was a year ago.
But this ROM got old, ICS is out, and I want it.
Is there a way to save all my data? I have some games, that have progress that I dont want to loose.
I have contacts that I dont want to loose. Messages and pictures that I still need.
What is the right procedure for me to upgrade ROM to newer one? I'm upgrading to Fallout v2 if that matters.
Thank you for answers
Regards, Anze
You need to read up about Nandroid backups that you take from recovery (cwm or 4ext) these are extremely useful if you wish to revert the device after you've flashed a new one rom as they take a snapshot of the devices partitions.
You should ensure that you take one of these before flashing a new rom.
I'd recommend that you sync your contacts with google (in the cloud) that way they'll always return to your device following a clean install
Otherwise the best application is titanium backup which enables you to make backups of your applications and there associated data, which is useful to reinstall your applications after a rom upgrade.
You may also wish to restore data with apps together selectively after flashing a new rom due to possible data incompatibilities with versions resulting in FC. If so, within TB you could try PREFERENCES > RESTORATION SETTINGS > MIGRATE SYSTEM DATA or leave out data only restoring the app.

Backups before Flashing

Hello fellow ROM-flashers!
What do you do too keep your setup when flashing, what do you backup? settings, data, accounts and so on.
Is there any good way to backup and keep your settings, and so on... or do you have to redo all that after you flashed a new ROM?
Perhaps its recommended to do it all over again and again? ... I use Pandoriam 5.7 and are happy with it :good:
But then again 6.0 around the corner I sure I want to have the latest update. Dont we all?
I find myself redo my phone settings more then I actual use my phone
Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a way to update it as you do with a stock ROM.. so you didnt had to wipe all when you go from 5.7 to 6.0 for example.
I guessing there are a lot of reasons why this isn't really a valid option... but would be great

..TitaniumBackup....
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=titanium+backup
in free version no batch backup / restore...
backup system+app data
wipe system / data / cache / davlik cache in cwm - flash new rom... installl TB ... restore all.... finish
This should be in the Q and A forum
But yeah, buying titanium backup is the best purchase you'll ever make if you often flash ROMs with full wipes. The batch backup/restore process is brilliant, I have it also saving my backups to dropbox so if anything happens to my phone, I have a copy there too (4G is awesome for this).
I've also found the best launcher is Nova, using Titanium Backup to backup and restore Nova, I don't even have to setup my homescreen again (4 sized widgets, 4 folders, completely customised - you can see it in the homescreen thread in the Q and A forum), even the widgets are there after a full wipe which wasn't possible with other homescreen launchers. The only thing I setup fresh each time is my work exchange account.
By the way, you mostly DON'T have to wipe between ROM versions. I always do because that's how I like to do things (and due to the above I have the process sorted), but most poeple don't..
When updating ROM's - I do a Nandroid + SMS/Call log backup + Titanium backup of all user apps +data.
I the upgrade the ROM over exissting without any data/cache wipe. If I run into FC's after updating the ROM, I either restore my Nandroid or do a clean install of the new ROM and restore apps + settings from my Titanium backup.
I use online nandroid to backup full data. Works a treat and you can use your phone while backing up!

/user Partition Recovery ( on new rom )

hi all,
we have rooted apps where by we can backup different partition , ( eg , /user /system / recovery )
my question is if i have a phone say phone wtih stock rooted rom and i backed up its /user partition ( which have all the apps data ) and then full wipe the phone install a new custom rom and then i copy via root browser /user partition details back on new rom ( which was actually extrated from Stock rooted rom )
will i get the same state of apps on new custom rom as it was before i formatted ( full wipe ) the old rom ( stock rooted rom )
WHy i want to do it , is as follow s
i have stock rooted rom with call and SMS records since i started the phone 8 months back i dont want to loose all those details ( SMS and Call records ) i know there are apps to back and restore this info (smsbackup etc ) , but i just wanna do it my way not using any 3rd party app and command prompt or root browser
devs or any one who have knowledge about this please advise if its doable or not , so that i can initiate the testing at my won , i am also interested to write a script for same via adb what are my chances for doing so.
Depends on the rom. If it's stock based, then maybe. Otherwise no. Reason for this is that data and settings for system apps is in that partition too.
It's better to backup apps and userdata with titanium or similar, and then restore on a new rom.
We don't want bootloop and fc's

Data saved from one ROM usually causes conflicts when restoring that data in another ROM. You can't just pull the whole /data partition from one ROM and then push the whole partition to another ROM, it doesn't work that way.
Instead of doing what you're asking about. Use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps and app data, then flash your ROM then use Titanium Backup to restore the user apps and app data that you backed up.
This is the method used by most android users.
There is also the "adb backup" method of backing up data and restoring it. It should work to backup user apps and app data and restoring those apps and app data.
There is no purpose to trying the way you're trying, you'll just make a mess and much better and safer methods already exist.
Why ask the smart people for a different way when the way I described is how the smart people do it? If another way was better then that is how they would be doing it. What I posted are the best methods, use them, they work very well.

Android doesn't like it's partitions messed with too much and it doesn't like things that are from a different OS or even a different android version sometimes. Mixing data can cause issues, even the safe way of backing up and restoring doesn't always work.
